Medicine In The Margins: Access, Resistance And Health Care Utilization Among The Tuareg Of Niger, Teeb Al-Samarrai Oct 2006

Medicine In The Margins: Access, Resistance And Health Care Utilization Among The Tuareg Of Niger, Teeb Al-Samarrai

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

This thesis explores the historical, cultural and social reasons for the wariness that the nomadic Tuareg of Niger have towards Western medicine and medical practitioners. I give a historical account of their interactions with and resistance to the French colonial administration and the postcolonial state of Niger and how this resistance to Western medicine and health clinics was an embodied form of political and social resistance to governmentality and state attempts at sedentarization. I provide historical example of when health care delivery was successful and was embraced rather than resisted as well as the ways in which the Tuareg have …

The Politics Of Space And Culture In Santiago, Chile's Street Markets, Joel Stillerman Oct 2006

The Politics Of Space And Culture In Santiago, Chile's Street Markets, Joel Stillerman

Peer Reviewed Articles

Recent discussions of contentious politics have focused on struggles in and over space and place. This article builds upon these concerns by using ethnographic, interview, and documentary data to analyze the spatial politics of street market vendors in Santiago, Chile. Drawing upon Lefebvre’s concepts of perceived, conceived, and lived space as well as ideas drawn from research on space and protest, I show how street market vendors build upon spatial routines, a sense of place, political alliances, and scale jumping in their self-defense strategies at the local, national, and international scales. The findings illustrate Lefebvre’s argument that the advance of …

Comparing California's Cost Of Regulation To Other States: A Case Study Approach For Agriculture, Lynn Hamilton Oct 2006

Comparing California's Cost Of Regulation To Other States: A Case Study Approach For Agriculture, Lynn Hamilton

Agribusiness

Regulatory pressure is a source of increasing concern for California producers. Though regulations have a positive impact on society in terms of cleaner air and water, as well as increased worker safety; they impose multiple costs to farmers in the state. Growers must comply with a tangle of rules from the local, state and federal levels. Many regional differences arise in California environmental regulations, and regulatory pressure is unevenly applied throughout the state.

Previous studies regarding the regulatory environment in California have quantified the total cost of regulation on the state’s agricultural producers. The goal of this study was to …

The Shell-Shocked Hobbit: The First World War And Tolkien's Trauma Of The Ring, Michael Livingston Oct 2006

The Shell-Shocked Hobbit: The First World War And Tolkien's Trauma Of The Ring, Michael Livingston

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Describes the Battle of the Somme and Tolkien’s participation in it. Pointing out the parallels between the battle-scarred landscapes of Northern Europe and Middle-earth, Livingston notes that while they are worth cataloging, it is Tolkien’s nuanced and sympathetic depiction of Frodo’s post-traumatic stress disorder that is the most compelling result of the author’s war experiences. Provides a good overview of Tolkien’s war experiences and his literary response to them.

Optimal Band Selection For Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Of Aquatic Benthic Features - A Wavelet Filter Window Approach, Charles R. Bostater Oct 2006

Optimal Band Selection For Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Of Aquatic Benthic Features - A Wavelet Filter Window Approach, Charles R. Bostater

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

This paper describes a wavelet based approach to derivative spectroscopy. The approach is utilized to select, through optimization, optimal channels or bands to use as derivative based remote sensing algorithms. The approach is applied to airborne and modeled or synthetic reflectance signatures of environmental media and features or objects within such media, such as benthic submerged vegetation canopies. The technique can also applied to selected pixels identified within a hyperspectral image cube obtained from an board an airborne, ground based, or subsurface mobile imaging system. This wavelet based image processing technique is an extremely fast numerical method to conduct higher …

Spatial Confidentiality And Gis: Re-Engineering Mortality Locations From Published Maps About Hurricane Katrina, Andrew J. Curtis, Jacqueline W. Mills, Michael Leitner Oct 2006

Spatial Confidentiality And Gis: Re-Engineering Mortality Locations From Published Maps About Hurricane Katrina, Andrew J. Curtis, Jacqueline W. Mills, Michael Leitner

Faculty Publications

Background: Geographic Information System (GIS) can provide valuable insight into patterns of human activity. Online spatial display applications, such as Google Earth, can democratise this information by disseminating it to the general public. Although this is a generally positive advance for society, there is a legitimate concern involving the disclosure of confidential information through spatial display. Although guidelines exist for aggregated data, little has been written concerning the display of point level information. The concern is that a map containing points representing cases of cancer or an infectious disease, could be re-engineered back to identify an actual residence. This is …

Contribution Of The Nasa Land-Cover/Land-Use Change Program To The Northern Eurasia Earth Science Partnership Initiative: An Overview, Garik Gutman Oct 2006

Contribution Of The Nasa Land-Cover/Land-Use Change Program To The Northern Eurasia Earth Science Partnership Initiative: An Overview, Garik Gutman

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

The Northern Eurasia Earth Science Partnership Initiative (NEESPI) is a rapidly growing program that involves national government agencies, academia and private organizations in the U.S., Europe, Japan and Northern Eurasia. During the last decade the Northern Eurasian region have been undergoing socioeconomic, climatic and demographic changes. The causes of these changes, the associated interactions between the land surface, the atmosphere and the surrounding ocean and the resultant impact on the sustainability of land use of the region are important topics for scientific research. The NEESPI Science Plan has been prepared as an integrated regional study to better understand these hemispheric-scale …

Sensor Motion Control & Mobile Platforms For Aquatic Remote Sensing, Charles R. Bostater Oct 2006

Sensor Motion Control & Mobile Platforms For Aquatic Remote Sensing, Charles R. Bostater

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Modern remote sensing systems used in repetitive environmental monitoring and surveillance applications are used on various platforms. These platforms can be categorized as stationary (fixed) or moving platforms. The sensing systems monitor the ambient environment which also may have inherent motion, such as the water surface with water waves. This is particularly the case for airborne or ship borne sensing of aquatic environments and is true for ground based walking or crawling systems. The time sequential comparison and spatial registration of sensor images, particularly "hyperspectral imagery" requires pixel to pixel registration for science based change and target (or medium) detection …
