From The Social Margins To The Center: Lebanese Families Who Arrived In South Carolina Before 1950, Elizabeth Whitaker Dec 2006

From The Social Margins To The Center: Lebanese Families Who Arrived In South Carolina Before 1950, Elizabeth Whitaker

All Theses

The Lebanese families who arrived in South Carolina found themselves in a different environment than most had anticipated. Those who had spent time elsewhere in the U.S. found predominantly rural and predominantly Protestant South Carolina to be almost as alien as they or their parents had found the United States due partly to the religious differences and partly to the cultural differences between the Northeast, where most of them had lived for at least a few years after arriving in the United States, and the Southeast. Most of these new arrivals eventually found success and some degree of acceptance, but …

Instructional Choices Of Mississippi Foreign Language Teachers, Elizabeth Anne Harrison Dec 2006

Instructional Choices Of Mississippi Foreign Language Teachers, Elizabeth Anne Harrison

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to survey Mississippi foreign language teachers in regards to demographic information pertaining to their educational and professional experiences and how often they employ certain activities taken from the Mississippi Foreign Language Curriculum Framework (2000). The data were then examined to see if a relationship existed between specific teacher demographic data and how they implemented the state-mandated curriculum. A researcher-designed survey instrument was developed. In order to establish the validity and reliability of the instrument two samples were taken: Mississippi foreign language teachers and teachers subscribing to the on-line listserv FLTEACH. A total sample of …

Financial Analysis And Fiscal Viability Of Secondary Schools In Mukono District, Uganda, Janet Jeffery Tanner Dec 2006

Financial Analysis And Fiscal Viability Of Secondary Schools In Mukono District, Uganda, Janet Jeffery Tanner

Theses and Dissertations

Within the worldwide business community, many analysis tools and techniques have evolved to assist in the evaluation and encouragement of financial health and fiscal viability. However, in the educational community, such analysis is uncommon. It has long been argued that educational institutions bear little resemblance to, and should not be treated like, businesses. This research identifies an educational environment where educational institutions are, indeed, businesses, and may greatly benefit from the use of business analyses. The worldwide effort of Education for All (EFA) has focused on primary education, particularly in less developed countries (LDCs). In Sub-Saharan Africa, Uganda increased its …

Shape Matching, Relevance Feedback, And Indexing With Application To Spine X-Ray Image Retrieval, Xiaoqian Xu

Theses and Dissertations

The National Library of Medicine (NLM), an institute in the National Institutes of Health (NIH), maintains a collection of 17,000 digitized spine X-ray images obtained from the second National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES II). Research effort has been devoted to develop a web-accessible retrieval system that allows retrieval of images from the NHANES II database on relevant and frequently found pathologies. A comprehensive and successful image retrieval system requires effective image representation and matching methods, relevance feedback algorithms to incorporate user opinions, and efficient indexing schemes for fast access to image databases. This dissertation studies and develops approaches …

Importance Of Leadership Competencies And Content For Athletic Training Education And Practice: A Delphi Technique And National Survey, Matthew R. Kutz Dec 2006

Importance Of Leadership Competencies And Content For Athletic Training Education And Practice: A Delphi Technique And National Survey, Matthew R. Kutz

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Employers identify leadership as a desirable characteristic of athletic trainers. The Board of Certification's Role Delineation Study advocates "knowledge of leadership styles," and "preparation for leadership roles" should be a "distinguishing characteristic" of post-certification athletic training education. The athletic training literature was weak in identifying leadership competencies or content important for practice or for inclusion in athletic training education programs (ATEPs). A two phase exploratory and comparative research study was conducted using a panel of 18 athletic training experts (Phase One, Modified Delphi Technique, mixed methods) and a randomly selected sample of 161 faculty and athletic training practitioners (Phase Two, …

Landscape Change In The South Prong Alafia River Basin, Kimberly Sarah Koenig Dec 2006

Landscape Change In The South Prong Alafia River Basin, Kimberly Sarah Koenig

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

West-central Florida has supplied much of the national and global demand for phosphate for over 100 years. The two main tributaries of the Alafia River, the North and South Prongs, have been extensively modified by the strip mining, benefaction, and chemical processing activities associated with the phosphate mining industry. Using aerial photos, an analysis of landscape change in the South Prong Alafia River drainage basin (357.4 km2) between 1940, 1970, and 2004 was conducted. A modified Florida Land Use, Land Cover, and Forms Classification System code (FLUCCS) was used to classify and measure change through the study period. Change in …

Visual Learning Objects: Enable Faculty To Focus On Active Learning, Pandeli Glavanis Dr. Dec 2006

Visual Learning Objects: Enable Faculty To Focus On Active Learning, Pandeli Glavanis Dr.

Faculty Journal Articles

In two recent issues of New Chalk Talk (Vol.6, Issue 2 & 6) I suggested that “learning objects” enhance active learning and that “visual learning objects”, in particular, contribute significantly to the learning relationship. In this issue I wish to elaborate on how such “visual learning objects” are the key element that liberates faculty from having to design and construct their own demonstrations and illustrations (reinvent the wheel) in their respective courses and thus enable them to focus on critical and active learning instead.

Communicating Ethnicity: A Phenomenological Analysis Of Constructed Identity, Laura L. Pierson Dec 2006

Communicating Ethnicity: A Phenomenological Analysis Of Constructed Identity, Laura L. Pierson

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Theses

This dissertation uses phenomenology, along with a constructionist framework, to explore the ways an ethnic community in central Texas constructs and communicates its cultural identity. The first goal of this study (RQ1) was to describe how the people of Norse, Texas experience ethnicity. The second goal of this study (RQ2) was to discover how this ethnicity was communicatively constructed and maintained. The third goal of this study (RQ3) was to learn how the relationship between ethnic identity and communication contributes to the creation of shared meanings within the community. The fourth goal (RQ4) of this study was to describe the …

Taking Judicial Notice Of Genocide? The Problematic Law And Policy Of The Karemera Decision, Ralph Mamiya Dec 2006

Taking Judicial Notice Of Genocide? The Problematic Law And Policy Of The Karemera Decision, Ralph Mamiya

ExpressO

On June 16, 2006, the Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda issued a decision in Prosecutor v. Karemera taking judicial notice of the fact that genocide occurred in Rwanda in 1994. This decision startled many court observers. While no internationally respected commentator would today question whether the Rwanda genocide took place, should such an event be judicially noticed without evidence? This paper examines that question, arguing that the ICTR Appeals Chamber’s expansive use of judicial notice in Karemera was both illogical and unwise. Genocide, whether as an historical fact or legal charge, fails to meet the “common …

Void Agreements, Knocked-Out Terms, And Blue Pencils: Judicial And Legislative Handling Of Unreasonable Terms In Noncompete Agreements, Kenneth R. Swift Dec 2006

Void Agreements, Knocked-Out Terms, And Blue Pencils: Judicial And Legislative Handling Of Unreasonable Terms In Noncompete Agreements, Kenneth R. Swift

ExpressO

This article adresses the divergent approaches currently taken by courts after finding an unreasonable term in an employer-employee noncompete agreement. The article begins by reviewing basic standards used to determine if the terms of a noncompete agreement are reasonable. The article then addresses and analyzes the three approaches used by courts after finding an unreasonable term: finding the agreement void in its entirety, using the "Blue Pencil" doctrine to eliminate unreasonable terms and enforce the remaining terms, and using the court's equitable powers to not only remove unreasonable terms, but to rewrite those terms to make them reasonable. The article …
