Informing Teacher Education Through Cross-Cultural Teaching And Learning: Dialogic Inquiry Into Japanese And Canadian School Experiences, Mitsuyo Sakamoto, Elaine Chan Nov 2006

Informing Teacher Education Through Cross-Cultural Teaching And Learning: Dialogic Inquiry Into Japanese And Canadian School Experiences, Mitsuyo Sakamoto, Elaine Chan

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

This article examines the hermeneutic, narrative, and social co-construction of cultural understanding as two educators shared their teaching and learning experiences in Japanese and Canadian schools. Our dialogic inquiry reveals how perceptions of practices in one culture—including curricula in non-core, academic subjects, stances on student assessment, and attitudes toward extracurricular activities—were shaped by our prior school experiences. The study reveals that reconstruction of previous overseas experience and co-construction of meaning from this reconstruction can serve as a powerful means of enhancing understanding of cross-cultural issues. The reconstruction process also offers a means of engaging those who do not have international, …

A Molecular Phylogenetic Analysis Of Strombid Gastropod Morphological Diversity, Jared M. Latiolais, Michael S. Taylor, Kaustuv Roy, Michael E. Hellberg Nov 2006

A Molecular Phylogenetic Analysis Of Strombid Gastropod Morphological Diversity, Jared M. Latiolais, Michael S. Taylor, Kaustuv Roy, Michael E. Hellberg

Faculty Publications

The shells of strombid gastropods show a wide variety of forms, ranging from small and fusiform to large and elaborately ornamented with a strongly flared outer lip. Here, we present the first species-level molecular phylogeny for strombids and use the resulting phylogenetic framework to explore relationships between species richness and morphological diversity. We use portions of one nuclear (325 bp of histone H3) and one mitochondrial (640 bp of cytochrome oxidase I, COI) gene to infer relationships within the two most species-rich genera in the Strombidae: Strombus and Lambis. We include 32 species of Strombus, representing 10 of 11 extant …

IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority

This is the first volume of a series describing the results of 11 excavation campaigns at Tel Bet Yeraḥ, a large mound situated at the exit of the Jordan River from the Sea of Galilee, which took place over some 50 years (1933–1986). This first volume presents the stratigraphic framework and the Early Bronze Age pottery. The second volume (IAA Reports 54) presents the Early Bronze Age artifact assemblages and a synthetic treatment of the results. The third volume (IAA Reports 61) describes the Hellenistic and Islamic finds.

Objectifying Anxieties: Scientific Ideologies In Bram Stoker’S Dracula And The Lair Of The White Worm, Diane Hoeveler Nov 2006

Objectifying Anxieties: Scientific Ideologies In Bram Stoker’S Dracula And The Lair Of The White Worm, Diane Hoeveler

English Faculty Research and Publications

Scientific ideologies swirl throughout Stoker’s two most gothic novels, Dracula (1897) and The Lair of the White Worm (1911), and this essay will address those ideologies as literary manifestations of just some of the “weird science” that was permeating late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century Europe. Specifically, the essay examines racial theories, physiognomy, criminology, brain science, and sexology as they appear in Stoker’s two novels. Stoker owned a copy Johann Caspar Lavater’s five-volume edition of Essays on Physiognomy (1789), and declared himself to be a “believer of the science” of physiognomy. The second major “weird science” infecting the gothic works of Stoker is …

Reading Science Fiction Novels As An Architectural Research Method: The Case Study Of J. G. Ballard’S High Rise, Zeynep Tuna Ultav Nov 2006

Reading Science Fiction Novels As An Architectural Research Method: The Case Study Of J. G. Ballard’S High Rise, Zeynep Tuna Ultav

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The aim of this paper is to suggest a new approach in producing architectural knowledge through the realm of discourse by systematizing the social and spatial clues within science fiction literature. In this sense, the departure point is the notion of interdisciplinarity, which expresses the relationship of modern research methods with several other disciplines. Considering the potential of interdisciplinary aspect of architecture, the scope of this paper is several parallel aspects between architectural discourse and the spatiality of literature proposed through the case study of J. G. Ballard’s novel High Rise. In this sense, an architectural research on the phenomenon …

Phd Research In Design Driven Processes For The Valorisation Of Cultural Heritage, Eleonora Lupo Nov 2006

Phd Research In Design Driven Processes For The Valorisation Of Cultural Heritage, Eleonora Lupo

DRS Biennial Conference Series

In this working paper is presented part of the work developed during two years of doctoral research at the Politecnico of Milano. The focus of the research is the definition of the role and the competences of design in the valorisation of Cultural Heritage, in order to produce a model of processes of valorisation design driven. Design owns traditional and explicit competences related to the exploitation of the cultural patrimony as exhibition design and light design, but in the contemporary cultural system, corresponding to a more complex concept of Cultural Heritage, design developed a more strategic approach, focusing on the …

Circularity, Power And The Technologies Of Seeing: Panopticism And Its Antithesis As Spatial Archetypes Of Visual Contraception In Space, Michael Chapman, Michael Ostwald Nov 2006

Circularity, Power And The Technologies Of Seeing: Panopticism And Its Antithesis As Spatial Archetypes Of Visual Contraception In Space, Michael Chapman, Michael Ostwald

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The evolution of post-structuralism as the intellectual paradigm of the second half of the Twentieth Century was accompanied by a simultaneous critical discourse concerned with the relationship between space and power. Central to this discourse is the work of the French intellectual Michel Foucault, whose analyses of the disciplinary societies of the Nineteenth Century established the multivalent tactics of power and its affiliations with architectural space. Through his examinations of hospitals, mental asylums, prisons and educational institutions Foucault demonstrated the way that space co-operated with authoritarian principles to turn communities into individuals and subsequently those individuals into subjects. Foucault termed …

The Reorganization Of Graphic Design History, W. H. Chou Nov 2006

The Reorganization Of Graphic Design History, W. H. Chou

DRS Biennial Conference Series

To resolve the marginalisation of East Asian design in graphic design history, this research argues for design history’s reconception from the perspective of deeper historical and globological structures than the recent prominence of Euro-American design. That Western society has integrated its current global power with processes of cultural imperialism is evident from the writing of graphic design history. The metadiscourses of Euro-American modernism and postmodernism constitute the roots of privileged and prejudicial knowledge in the history of graphic design, establishing Western developments as the yardstick for the production and ordering of graphic design history. Substantive frameworks for shaping design history …

What Are The Visual Communication Requirements Of A Built Environment?, Robert Harland

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper aims to explore the role that visual communication plays in the urban environment, and the potential for further discussion as a single domain. The scope of enquiry covers aspects of Geography, Urban Design and Graphic Design, exploring briefly the broad contexts for the subject, and the relationship between the emerging disciplines that are playing an increasing and highly visible role in how we use public spaces. It concludes that Graphic Design is playing a significant role in determining the success or failure of the multitude of behaviour settings in the built environment, and a closer relationship with Urban …

A Constructivist Approach To Wayfinding Map Studies: Construction Of Spatial Knowledge In People-Map-Space Interactions, Christopher Kueh Nov 2006

A Constructivist Approach To Wayfinding Map Studies: Construction Of Spatial Knowledge In People-Map-Space Interactions, Christopher Kueh

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Effective wayfinding map design requires the application of knowledge about how people interact with maps and the actual environment. This paper presents a research that applied constructivist perspectives to study the ways people construct individual spatial knowledge by interacting with maps and the actual environment. The findings revealed that people construct spatial knowledge based on experience and active interactions with entities in a specific built environment.

Texts And Traditions: The Consequences Of Humanist New Testament Scholarship For The Reformation, Laura Rickelman Nov 2006

Texts And Traditions: The Consequences Of Humanist New Testament Scholarship For The Reformation, Laura Rickelman

Senior Honors Theses

Martin Luther's Reformation of Christianity was preceded by a conceptual reform of New Testament studies arising from the Renaissance scorn for medieval perceptions. The Reformation was thrust into a volatile academic area of conflicting humanist and scholastic methods of biblical interpretation. Lorenzo Valla and Desiderius Erasmus applied advanced methods of linguistic, historical, and literary criticism to the translation and emendation of the New Testament. The debate over authority for textual meaning held particular applicability for disregarding the authority of tradition in interpreting scripture. The humanist view of scripture was adopted by and consequently associated with the Reformation, although the conflicting …

China, Russia And The Balance Of Power In Central Asia, Eugene B. Rumer Nov 2006

China, Russia And The Balance Of Power In Central Asia, Eugene B. Rumer

Strategic Forums

Since the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) called upon the United States to commit to withdraw its military personnel from Central Asia at its July 2005 summit, the SCO has acquired the reputation as a significant obstacle to U.S. policy. However, this reputation obscures the real state of affairs. Notwithstanding press reports about the challenge posed by the SCO to U.S. policy in Central Asia, a close look at the organization, the behavior of its members, their motivations, and the practical impact of their declarations suggests that the SCO’s challenge to U.S. interests and policies in Central Asia is less than …

Urban Surface Biophysical Descriptors And Land Surface Temperature Variations, Bingqing Liang, Qihao Weng, Dengsheng Lu Nov 2006

Urban Surface Biophysical Descriptors And Land Surface Temperature Variations, Bingqing Liang, Qihao Weng, Dengsheng Lu

Faculty Publications

In remote sensing studies of land surface temperatures (LST), thematic land-use and land-cover (LULC) data are frequently-employed for simple correlation analyses between LULC types and their thermal signatures. Development of quantitative surface descriptors could improve our capabilities for modeling urban thermal landscapes and advance urban climate research. This study developed an analytical procedure based upon a spectral unmixing model for characterizing and quantifying the urban landscape in Indianapolis, Indiana. A Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus image of the study area, acquired on 22 June 2002, was spectrally unmixed into four fraction endmembers, namely, green vegetation, soil, high and low albedo. …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we address the problem of integrating Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia, and G-Portal, a web-based digital library, in the geography domain. The integration facilitates the sharing of data and services between the two web applications that are of great value in learning. We first present an overall system architecture for supporting such an integration and address the metadata extraction problem associated with it. In metadata extraction, we focus on extracting and constructing metadata for geo-political regions namely cities and countries. Some empirical performance results will be presented. The paper will also describe the adaptations of G-Portal and Wikipedia …
