Using Place Attachment To Determine The Acceptability Of Restoring Fire To Its Natural Role In Wilderness Ecosystems, Eric Paul Turbeville
Using Place Attachment To Determine The Acceptability Of Restoring Fire To Its Natural Role In Wilderness Ecosystems, Eric Paul Turbeville
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This study was conducted to explore the social dimensions of wilderness fire management. I set out to answer the question what role does an individual’s attachment to place play in determining the acceptability of management actions directed towards fire? I feel that problems will arise if management agencies attempt to restore natural fire regimes to wilderness areas without accounting for the effects on meanings and values different people attach to landscapes. I used a qualitative method and conducted guided interviews with 27 people from three different groups: (1) fire and wilderness management personnel from the Bitterroot National Forest, (2) residents …

A Parent-Centered Radial Layout Algorithm For Interactive Graph Visualization And Animation, Andrew Pavlo, Christopher Homan, Jonathan Schull
A Parent-Centered Radial Layout Algorithm For Interactive Graph Visualization And Animation, Andrew Pavlo, Christopher Homan, Jonathan Schull
Articles
We have developed (1) a graph visualization system that allows users to explore graphs by viewing them as a succession of spanning trees selected interactively, (2) a radial graph layout algorithm, and (3) an animation algorithm that generates meaningful visualizations and smooth transitions between graphs while minimizing edge crossings during transitions and in static layouts. Our system is similar to the radial layout system of Yee et al. (2001), but differs primarily in that each node is positioned on a coordinate system centered on its own parent rather than on a single coordinate system for all nodes. Our system is …
Addressing The Arnstein Gap: Improving Public Confidence In Transportation Planning And Design Through Structured Public Involvement (Spi), Keiron Bailey, Ted H. Grossardt
Addressing The Arnstein Gap: Improving Public Confidence In Transportation Planning And Design Through Structured Public Involvement (Spi), Keiron Bailey, Ted H. Grossardt
Kentucky Transportation Center Faculty and Researcher Publications
The Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century, or TEA-21, enacted in 1998, following the Intermodal SurfaceTransportation Equity Act (ISTEA) of 1991, defines the “public” as “citizens, affected public agencies, representatives of transportation agency employees, freight shippers, private providers of transportation, representatives of users of public transit, providers of freight transportation services and other interested parties.” More recently the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has expanded this definition to include underrepresented groups “such as low income or minority households and the elderly”. In the last decade public involvement has been mandated for all metropolitan and statewide planning processes (TEA), and it …
The Structural Validity Of The Ohio Ninth Grade Proficiency Test, Yonghee Kim, William E. Loadman
The Structural Validity Of The Ohio Ninth Grade Proficiency Test, Yonghee Kim, William E. Loadman
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
The structural validity of the Ohio Ninth Grade Proficiency Test was investigated with the test scores of 713 eighth graders who had their first opportunity to take the test in March 1999 in a large urban school district in Ohio. The study examined a hypothetical structure of the test to determine its fit to the data. Confirmatory factor analysis was performed, and several fit indices including χ2 statistics and the root- mean-square error of approximation were examined. The theoretical structure of the test was first found to be valid, and then the invariance of the structure was examined across males …

Early Maize (Zea Mays L.) Cultivation In Mexico: Dating Sedimentary Pollen Records And Its Implications, Andrew Sluyter, Gabriela Dominguez
Early Maize (Zea Mays L.) Cultivation In Mexico: Dating Sedimentary Pollen Records And Its Implications, Andrew Sluyter, Gabriela Dominguez
Faculty Publications
A sedimentary pollen sequence from the coastal plain of Veracruz, Mexico, demonstrates maize cultivation by 5,000 years ago, refining understanding of the geography of early maize cultivation. Methodological issues related to bioturbation involved in dating that record combine with its similarity to a pollen sequence from the coastal plain of Tabasco, Mexico, to suggest that the inception of maize cultivation in that record occurred as much as 1,000–2,000 years more recently than the previously accepted 7,000 years ago. Our analysis thereby has substantive, theoretical, and methodological implications for understanding the complex process of maize domestication. Substantively, it demonstrates that the …

The Recent Intellectual Structure Of Geography, Andrew Sluyter, Andrew D. Augustine, Michael C. Bitton, Thomas J. Sullivan, Fei Wang
Faculty Publications
An active learning project in an introductory graduate course used multidimensional scaling of the name index in Geography in America at the Dawn of the 21st Century, by Gary Gaile and Cort Willmott, to reveal some features of the discipline's recent intellectual structure relevant to the relationship between human and physical geography. Previous analyses, dating to the 1980s, used citation indices or Association of American Geographers spe- cialty-group rosters to conclude that either the regional or the methods and environmental subdisciplines bridge human and physical geography. The name index has advantages over those databases, and its analysis reveals that the …
Humboldt's Mexican Texts And Landscapes, Andrew Sluyter
Humboldt's Mexican Texts And Landscapes, Andrew Sluyter
Faculty Publications
While in New Spain from 1803 to 1804, Alexander von Humboldt interacted with some of its landscapes and the texts that represented them. Analysis of those interactions regarding the Basin of Mexico and the Gulf lowlands demonstrates what purely text-based studies of the production of places cannot: The contrasting landscape elements and patterns that had emerged over millennia during precolonial times in those two places, their relative degrees of depopulation during the colonial era, and the relative degrees of rigor Humboldt applied to interacting with the resulting landscapes and the texts that represented them greatly affected his representations of those …

Choice And Fraud In Racial Identification: The Dilemma Of Policing Race In Affirmative Action, The Census, And A Color-Blind Society, Tseming Yang
Michigan Journal of Race and Law
This Article focuses on the implications of self-conscious efforts by individuals to alter their racial identity and the challenge that they pose to social conventions and the law. It also considers some implications of such a framework to the promotion of a color-blind society, in particular with respect to health care services and bureaucratic records.
The Rhetorical Negotiation Of Thomas Jefferson In Secondary U.S. History Textbooks, Josh Robison
The Rhetorical Negotiation Of Thomas Jefferson In Secondary U.S. History Textbooks, Josh Robison
Masters Theses
The malleability of history is an intellectual condition that should be acknowledged and understood fully to formulate and to comprehend our knowledge of the past. As history is a very human interpretation of past events, and language is a human invention, it is useful to analyze the language used to design our underst anding of these events. This thesis focuses on the rhetoric used by secondary U.S. history textbooks in their presentation of Thomas Jefferson in order to initiate a larger iscussion about how the use of specific rhetorical assumptions and strategies significantly influences our comprehension of the past.

Transformed, Not Transcended: The Role Of Extrajudicial Dispute Resolution In Antebellum Kentucky And New Jersey, Carli N. Conklin
Transformed, Not Transcended: The Role Of Extrajudicial Dispute Resolution In Antebellum Kentucky And New Jersey, Carli N. Conklin
Faculty Publications
The purpose of this paper is to explore the applicability of that conclusion to two states not studied by Horwitz: Kentucky and New Jersey. The study of Kentucky, a state that was largely agricultural in the antebellum period, will provide a case study for the argument that the destruction of arbitration in antebellum America was mainly due to a merchant-lawyer alliance.
Segmented Rankings For Segmented Markets, Rafael Gely
Segmented Rankings For Segmented Markets, Rafael Gely

A joke frequently told by and about economists begins with a group of colleagues searching one night under a lamppost for a key in a gutter. A bystander asks the group where they have lost the key. The economists explain that although they had lost the key in a gutter some distance away, they were looking under the lamppost because the light was better there. The three articles in this panel remind me of this story, albeit in a non-conventional way. By exploring issues regarding the broader context in which rankings exist, the three articles encourage us to look not …
Introduction To Vanishing Trial Symposium, John M. Lande
Introduction To Vanishing Trial Symposium, John M. Lande
Faculty Publications
This symposium shows that "vanishing trial" phenomena touch an extremely broad range of issues including transformations of society, courts, dispute resolution procedures, and even the nature of knowledge. These phenomena relate to decisions by litigants in particular cases, court systems, national policy, and international relations. This subject is too large and complex for any symposium to analyze fully, especially at this early stage of analysis. This symposium makes an important contribution to this study, with theories and evidence about the existence, nature, and extent of reductions in trials and similar proceedings. It elaborates a range of theories about possible causes …
Mcluhan’S Warning, Frye’S Strategy, Emerson’S Dream, Rich Murphy
Mcluhan’S Warning, Frye’S Strategy, Emerson’S Dream, Rich Murphy
The Journal of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning
McLuhan's Warning, Frye's Strategy, Emerson's Dream argues the vital function of literary writing in the academy. The essay maps a road from the warnings of catastrophe by Marshall McLuhan to Emerson's dream of all American citizens being poets through the writing strategies of Northrop Frye. It is argued that what one learns through literary writing is especially important during the crises that are ongoing in the West.
