Overcoming Barriers To Enrolling Minorities In Medical Research: What Does The Evidence Say?, Stacy Uybico

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Background: Despite the pervasive underrepresentation of minorities in health research studies, little is known about strategies that aim to increase minority enrollment in research. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify whether elder African American and Latinos were more likely to refuse research participation, identify tangible and specific incentives to improve research participation in this population, and to review the successes and data reporting of recruitment interventions attempted on diverse populations at large, including the non-elderly. Methods: We conducted a review of Yale OAIC studies to determine minority vs. non-minority research enrollment rates, interviewed key informants about likely …

The sex pheromone of the scarab beetle, Phyllophaga anxia, is a blend of the methyl esters of two amino acids, L-valine and L-isoleucine. A field trapping study was conducted, deploying different blends of the two compounds at 59 locations in the United States and Canada. More than 57,000 males of 61 Phyllophaga species (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae) were captured and identified. Three major findings included: (1) widespread use of the two compounds [of the 147 Phyllophaga (sensu stricto) species found in the United States and Canada, males of nearly 40% were captured]; (2) in most species intraspecific male response to the …

On-Line Electronic Document Collaboration And Annotation, Trev R. Harmon Nov 2006

On-Line Electronic Document Collaboration And Annotation, Trev R. Harmon

Theses and Dissertations

The Internet provides a powerful medium for communication and collaboration. The ability one has to connect and interact with web-based tools from anywhere in the world makes the Internet ideal for such tasks. However, the lack of native tools can be a hindrance when deploying collaborative initiatives, as many current projects require specialized software in order to operate. This thesis demonstrates, with the comparably recent advances in browser technology and Document Object Model (DOM) implementation, a web-based collaborative annotation system can be developed that can be accessed by a user through a standards-compliant web browser. Such a system, demonstrated to …

Japanese North Americans, War, And Communal Healing Through Literature: Internment Memory As An Ascent In Meaning And Beauty, Chikako D. Kumamoto Nov 2006

Japanese North Americans, War, And Communal Healing Through Literature: Internment Memory As An Ascent In Meaning And Beauty, Chikako D. Kumamoto

English Faculty Scholarship

To define ourselves as Americans, we often like to invoke the still-potent idea, inherited from the Puritans, of a "city upon a hill." Steeped in a mythic discourse on our earliest conception of America as an elect nation, this phrase envisions the community at large as "the pilot society for the world" engaged in a noble experiment of innocence, consensus, justice, and freedom for all, while driving to achieve myriad forms of greatness. But when this community at large is found fallen from the ideal conception of itself and conducts itself contrarily to its communal responsibilities towards its smaller communities …

The Effects Of Novel Design Strategies On The Risks And Benefits Of Phase I Oncology Trials, Shlomo Koyfman Nov 2006

The Effects Of Novel Design Strategies On The Risks And Benefits Of Phase I Oncology Trials, Shlomo Koyfman

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Considerable ethical debate surrounding the risks and benefits of Phase I oncology trials is based on older response and toxicity data that does not account for recent changes in the types of agents and trial design. This study aims to not only update these data, but to investigate the impact of novel trial designs on various clinical outcomes. We performed a review of the literature using the Medline database. Part I included nearly all phase I trials published in 2002. Part II identified phase I studies of cytotoxic agents alone, published from 2002 through 2004. 221 Phase I oncology studies, …

What Archives Reveal: The Hidden Poems Of Amelia Earhart, Sammie L. Morris

Libraries Research Publications

The importance of primary source materials to scholarship is undeniable. Primary source materials can verify or contradict information accepted as true in history books and other secondary sources. They can tell the whole, or at least more complete, story of events. Unlike secondary sources, primary source materials offer first-hand accounts from the past, bringing history closer and making it feel more real. It can even be argued that primary source materials are less susceptible to the loss or misinterpretation of information over time in subsequent edition revisions. In particular among primary source materials, manuscripts such as diaries and letters offer …

Human-Nonhuman Primate Interconnections And Their Relevance To Anthropology, Agustin Fuentes Nov 2006

Human-Nonhuman Primate Interconnections And Their Relevance To Anthropology, Agustin Fuentes

Ecological and Environmental Anthropology (University of Georgia)

The human-nonhuman primate interface is a core component in conservation and an emerging area of discourse across anthropology. There is a growing recognition of the relevance of long-term sympatry between human and nonhuman primates. Until recently these relationships received limited attention in the anthropological literature and in the primatological construction of models for the behavior and evolution of primate societies. Most socioecological investigations into primate groups and human populations do not incorporate their interactions (beyond predation or crop raiding), potential pathogen sharing, or the role of the anthropogenically impacted environment. Current relationships between humans and nonhuman primates are generally assumed …

Ethnoprimatology: Toward Reconciliation Of Biological And Cultural Anthropology, Erin P. Riley Nov 2006

Ethnoprimatology: Toward Reconciliation Of Biological And Cultural Anthropology, Erin P. Riley

Ecological and Environmental Anthropology (University of Georgia)

One of the hallmarks of the discipline of anthropology is its holistic approach to the study of what it means to be human. A perennial challenge to the discipline, however, is the question of whether biological and cultural anthropology can truly coexist given their traditionally disparate epistemologies and methodologies. In this paper, I argue that the emerging field of ethnoprimatology, which focuses on the ecological and cultural interconnections between human and nonhuman primates, has real potential to bridge these two subfields. I support my argument by discussing the theoretical rationale of an ethnoprimatological approach with regard to the notion of …
