Some limnological parameters and chlorophyll a were determined for twelve months at a pelagic station near Kigoma. Temperatures ranged between 25.7 ºC and 27.3 ºC at the surface, and 24.1 oC and 24.7 oC at100 m. Thermal stratification persisted throughout the year with the thermocline oscillating between 15 m in October and 60 m in May. Dissolved oxygen concentrations were high at the surface, ranging between 6.59 mg l-1 and 8.15 mg l-1, while at 100 m the concentrations ranged from less than 0.20 mg l-1 to 1.94 mg l-1. Nitrate-nitrogen concentrations in surface water ranged between 26 µg N …

Temporal And Spatial Distribution Of Grazers And Kelp Phlorotannins In Kachemak Bay, Alaska, Angela M. Dubois
Temporal And Spatial Distribution Of Grazers And Kelp Phlorotannins In Kachemak Bay, Alaska, Angela M. Dubois
Marine Biology
The potential influence of grazers on the density and distribution of kelp thalli is substantial and may be mediated by kelp phlorotannins serving in a defensive role. The purpose of this study was to determine how temporal and spatial phlorotannin patterns in four kelp species in Kachemak Bay, Alaska, are influenced by density and distribution of the gastropod grazer Lacuna vincta and environmental variables. Temporal phlorotannin patterns from June 2004 through December 2005 were mainly explained by the life history of particular kelp species as well as strong correlations with light attenuation and nitrate concentration. The Optimal Defense Theory of …

CityLand - 2006
The December 2006 issue of CityLand covers major land use, preservation, and legal developments across New York City. The City Council passed legislation increasing penalties for illegal construction and unauthorized demolition. BSA approved variances for residential and hospital developments in Chelsea and Queens, and a mixed-use project on a former cemetery site in Corona. Landmarks designated the New York Cab Company Stable but declined to landmark the Dakota Stables due to preemptive alterations. The Commission re-designated two City and Suburban Homes buildings in Lenox Hill, reversing a 1990 Board of Estimate decision. Hearings were held on three Far West Village …

Evaporation Estimation Using A Floating Pan, Michael Klink
Evaporation Estimation Using A Floating Pan, Michael Klink
All Theses
Almost all regions in the United States must accurately estimate evaporation to have effective water management programs. The purpose of this study is to develop a better method for measuring evaporation. Lake evaporation along with meteorological data are measured directly from a floating pan. The floating pan is specifically designed to account for one of the most sensitive parameters of evaporation, the water surface temperature, which the design achieves. However, other design factors such as air movement, solar radiation, stability, heat transfer, wave action, water level range, and site location were also taken into consideration. The evaporation measured from the …

Background Approximately 40,000 rescue and recovery workers were exposed to caustic dust and toxic pollutants following the 11 September 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC). These workers included traditional first responders, such as firefighters and police, and a diverse population of construction, utility, and public sector workers. Methods To characterize WTC-related health effects, the WTC Worker and Volunteer Medical Screening Program was established. This multicenter clinical program provides free standardized examinations to responders. Examinations include medical, mental health, and exposure assessment questionnaires; physical examinations; spirometry; and chest X rays. Results Of 9,442 responders examined between July 2002 and …

The Role Of Global Land Use In Determining Greenhouse Gases Mitigation Costs, Thomas Hertel, Huey-Lin Lee, Steven Rose, Brent Sohngen
The Role Of Global Land Use In Determining Greenhouse Gases Mitigation Costs, Thomas Hertel, Huey-Lin Lee, Steven Rose, Brent Sohngen
GTAP Working Papers Archive
This paper develops a CGE model with unique regional land types and detailed non-CO2 GHG emissions which it uses to analyze the potential for reductions in land-based greenhouse gas emissions as well as forest sequestration. In our global, general equilibrium analysis of carbon taxation, we find that forest carbon sequestration is the dominant means for global GHG emissions reduction in the land using sectors. However, when compared to the rest of the world, emissions abatement in the US comes disproportionately from agriculture, and, within agriculture, disproportionately from reductions in fertilizer-related emissions (primarily in maize production). In the world as a …

The John Muir EWSLETTEB Two California Lions: John Muir & Luther Burbank by Roberta M. McDow, Stockton, CA I have long wanted to know you," John Muir wrote from his home in Martinez, California on January 6, 1910. "Strange how people so near are so long kept apart."1 His message accompanied a receipt dated December 29, 1909 for five dollars, about one hundred in today's currency, contributed to the Society for the Preservation of National Parks.2 A day later, Muir's letter arrived at its destination in Santa Rosa. The recipient was Luther Burbank. Burbank had lived in the area since …

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education
I was recently asked to express my opinion on the concept of Nature Deficit Disorder for a graduate class, from a classroom teacher's perspective. I was thrilled at the prospect since, in my roles as father, husband, and teacher, people rarely want my opinion on anything. As I thought about it, however, I realized just how important the integration of nature into education is for my students and me. I teach at a small, rural high school in central New York called Cincinnatus Central School. We have UPK-12 in one building with a population of about 700 students. The school …
Spatial And Seasonal Variation In Wildlife-Vehicle Collisions, Jonathan M. Conard, Philip S. Gipson
Spatial And Seasonal Variation In Wildlife-Vehicle Collisions, Jonathan M. Conard, Philip S. Gipson
The Prairie Naturalist
To understand seasonal variation in the number of wildlife-vehicle collisions and the influence of land cover type on collision distribution we counted road-kill carcasses for 84 weeks along a 40 km route on two state highways in northeastern Kansas. We noted land cover type adjacent to each road-kill and tested the null hypothesis that road-kills were distributed randomly with respect to land cover type. Wildlife-vehicle collisions were not distributed randomly in relation to land cover availability. Instead, collisions occurred more often then expected adjacent to riparian areas and less often than expected adjacent to agricultural fields. Wildlife-vehicle collisions varied seasonally …

Maternal Defensive Behavior Of Umbonia Ataliba Treehoppers, December 2006, Sarah Anvik
Maternal Defensive Behavior Of Umbonia Ataliba Treehoppers, December 2006, Sarah Anvik
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
A population of Umbonia ataliba (Homoptera: Membracidae) located between 1300 and 1500 m in Monteverde, Costa Rica was studied from October to November 2006. The maternal defensive behavior exhibited by these subsocial insects toward nymphs of different developmental stages was experimentally investigated. The purpose of my study was to determine how the defensive behavior changed from eggs to adults and in response to two different predator types. I attached dead wasps to long wooden sticks and then simulated predator approaches toward family groups of eggs, second instar and fourth instars nymphs. I found that the defensive behavior by females guarding …

Territorial Response Of Rufous-And-White Wrens (Thryothorus Rufalbus) To Neighbor/Stranger Conspecific Playbacks, December 2006, Kaitlin Dunn
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
I tested the Rufous-and-white Wren (T. rufalbus) for discrimination between the songs of neighbor and stranger conspecifics. I found significant differences in behavioral responses between the song playbacks of neighboring and unfamiliar conspecifics in seventeen pairs of the Rufous-and-white Wren. Birds sang for longer periods and sang more songs in response to playbacks of strangers. However, the amount that they approached the playback source did not differ between the song types. These results suggest that Rufous-and-white wrens recognize the songs of neighbors and identify the individuals as less threatening than strangers. This diminished response may be an adaptive strategy to …
Restriction Of Tort Remedies And The Constraints Of Due Process: The Right To An Adequate Remedy, Tracy A. Thomas
Restriction Of Tort Remedies And The Constraints Of Due Process: The Right To An Adequate Remedy, Tracy A. Thomas
Akron Law Faculty Publications
In the recent proliferation of tort reform statutes, the dangerous clause of remedial jurisdiction stripping has sneaked into the law. Reminiscent of federal statutes in other areas of the law, these jurisdictional provisions strip courts of all power to award punitive or non-pecuniary damages in excess of legislative limits. Many states have acted to restrict frivolous claims and excessive recoveries by cabining “McTorts” and “runaway juries.” Regardless of the merits of these policy questions, the use of the simple expedient of remedial jurisdiction to accomplish these purposes raises significant concerns. By arbitrarily restricting an individual’s right to a meaningful remedy, …
