Architecture For A Simulated World, Clay Strange

Architecture Thesis Prep

"It is the contention of this thesis that such an architecture should be light and insubstantial, like a simulation. Architecture should appear ambiguous and fleeting."

If teaching is not the oldest profession, it certainly has a long historical pedigree. The frustrations teaching evokes likely have an equally long pedigree. One sees in Plato's Republic, for example, Socrates' frustration in trying to convey to Glaukon the aims of the educational scheme he is presenting to his interlocutors in Book 8. His evident difficulties relaying this information have doubtless struck sympathetic chords in the breasts of countless generations of teachers. Frustration has certainly been the case for the present authors, particularly in teaching the analysis and understanding of secondary commentary on classic texts; when reading such …

Acquiring Land Use Rights In Today's China: A Snapshot From On The Ground, Gregory M. Stein Oct 2006

Acquiring Land Use Rights In Today's China: A Snapshot From On The Ground, Gregory M. Stein

Scholarly Works

For the interested observer of real estate markets, China is the most fascinating place in the world today, and the coming years promise to be no less intriguing than the recent past has been. This Article offers an overview of how a specific segment of the Chinese real estate market - the acquisition of land use rights - operates in practice, from both a legal and business perspective.

I recently interviewed dozens of Chinese and Western experts who are taking part in one of the greatest real estate booms in world history. My conversations with these real estate developers, bankers, …

Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants: Reflections From A Young Scholar, Taylor Black

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

Back in November 2005, I was working on a paper for Ros Petchetsky's "Body Politics" class at Hunter College and I found myself running into all sorts of problems in accessing information about queer political movements and the discourses surrounding them. In a frenzied moment, I emailed Paisley Currah, and he was kind enough to offer his time as well as CLAGS's materials for my research.

Voices From The Closet: Male Homosexuality And Dual Identity In The Republic Of Cyprus, Tasia Jelatis-Hoke

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

What is the relationship between semiotics and gay identities in the Republic of Cyprus? I initially planned to explore the complex relationship between language, and more specifically semiotics and gay male identity in Greek Cypriots. Early in my research, however, I realized that a lot of background research was required before I would be able to do this sort of in-depth analysis. In addition, after becoming aware of the deep colonial legacy left to homosexuals in Cyprus I was reluctant to use the work of European theorists to analyze a post-colonial space. I also came across a pertinent assertion of …

A Good Lesson For Texas: Learning How To Adequately Assist Languageminorities Learn English, Sandra Cortes Oct 2006

A Good Lesson For Texas: Learning How To Adequately Assist Languageminorities Learn English, Sandra Cortes

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

This Comment argues that Texas should restructure current programs or adopt an entirely different linguistic program to better address the needs of limited English proficiency students. Bilingual education programs that have been proven to be ineffective in Texas and other states should not be allowed to continue to fail languageminority students. However, the best solution might not be to adopt an English-immersion program; rather, Texas should begin to structure a program that truly focuses, addresses, and remedies the needs of language-minority students.

The Reemergence Of Restitution: Theory And Practice In The Restatement (Third) Of Restitution, Chaim Saiman Oct 2006

The Reemergence Of Restitution: Theory And Practice In The Restatement (Third) Of Restitution, Chaim Saiman

Working Paper Series

The ALI’s Restatement (Third) of Restitution provides one of the most interesting expressions of contemporary legal conceptualism. This paper explores the theory and practice of post-realist conceptualism through a review and critique of the Restatement. At the theoretical level, the paper develops a typology of different forms of conceptualism, and shows that the Restatement has more in common with the high formalism of the nineteenth century than with contemporary modes of private law discourse. At the level of substantive doctrine, the paper explains why labels in fact make a difference, and assesses which recoveries are more (and less) likely under …

Kingship In The Mycenaean World And Its Reflections In The Oral Tradition [Review], Erwin F. Cook Oct 2006

Kingship In The Mycenaean World And Its Reflections In The Oral Tradition [Review], Erwin F. Cook

Classical Studies Faculty Research

Shear undertakes a detailed comparison of archaeological evidence from Mycenaean Greece, the surviving Linear B tablets, and the Homeric epics with the aim of showing that, contrary to the reigning scholarly consensus, Homer preserves a detailed and accurate portrait of the age he purports to describe. Indeed, Shear believes that both epics and much of Greek myth took shape during this period and reflect actual historical events (hence the reference to "oral tradition" rather than "Homer" in the title). Thus, because Pelops is the eponym of the Pcloponnesos, "he should logically belong to the early tradition that evolved soon after …

Corruption In Montenegro Untangling The Knot, Anna Lipton Galbraith Oct 2006

Corruption In Montenegro Untangling The Knot, Anna Lipton Galbraith

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Corruption in Montenegro exists on various levels. The focus of this paper is high level corruption, particularly conflict of interest cases regarding privatization processes, spatial planning and the procurement of public contracts. The reason for this focus is that the abuse of power by the government is one of the largest obstacles to creating a democratic environment of trust and a society structured around the rule of law. These are the primary areas were the government of Montenegro continues to exert inappropriate influence. The first section of the paper will analyze the origins of corruption and attempt to simultaneously provide …
