Composite (La, Sr)Mno3-Ysz Cathode For Sofc, Toshio Suzuki, Masanobu Awano, Piotr Jasinski, Vladimir Petrovsky, Harlan U. Anderson

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

(La, Sr) MnO3 (LSM)-Y doped ZrO2 (YSZ) composite was prepared using YSZ colloidal suspension (initial YSZ particle size ∼100 nm), YSZ and LSM polymer precursors on dense substrates at 800 °C annealing temperature. the results of a symmetrical LSM-YSZ composite cell test showed the area specific resistance for overpotential of 0.14 Ω cm2 at 800 °C, which indicated that the LSM-YSZ composite could be a potential candidate for cathode in SOFCs. the performance of the cell with the LSM-YSZ composite cathode and Ni-YSZ anode was investigated and the power density of about 0.26 W cm- 2 was obtained …

Effect Of Friction Stir Processing On The Microstructure Of Cast A356 Aluminum, Z. Y. Ma, S. R. Sharma, Rajiv S. Mishra Oct 2006

Effect Of Friction Stir Processing On The Microstructure Of Cast A356 Aluminum, Z. Y. Ma, S. R. Sharma, Rajiv S. Mishra

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Friction stir processing (FSP) was applied to cast A356 Al to modify the as-cast microstructure. FSP homogenizes and refines the cast microstructure, completely eliminates porosity, and creates a microstructure with fine Si particles (0.25-0.42 μm) distributed in a fine grain aluminum matrix (3-4 μm). Further, FSP parameters significantly influence microstructural development in the processed zone of cast A356 Al. Generally, higher tool rotation rate creates a more homogeneous microstructure. at lower tool rotation rates, a macroscopically visible banded structure characterized by a low density of coarse particles, was detected in the nugget zone. However, FSP parameters did not significantly influence …

Panel Discussion: The Future Of Natural Resources Extension, Gary San Julian Moderator

Triennial National Wildlife and Fisheries Extension Specialists Conference: 11th (2006)

Today we want to talk about the future of Extension. At the committee meeting, we talked about what the important things were, and a high priority that everyone is concerned about is going to happen in 2020: Where is Extension going to be, where is the fisheries and wildlife program going to be, where are we in the states going to be, and what kind of support are we going to get?

Saving The World One Native Plant At A Time, Christopher E. Moorman, Christopher S. Deperno Oct 2006

Saving The World One Native Plant At A Time, Christopher E. Moorman, Christopher S. Deperno

Triennial National Wildlife and Fisheries Extension Specialists Conference: 11th (2006)

Wildlife habitat is lost as the human population and land clearing for development increase in the South. Remaining habitats are fragmented and contain high numbers of invasive, exotic plants. Suburban, manicured landscapes often lack the plant diversity and complex vegetation structure important to wildlife. Generally, developers and homeowners replant cleared grounds with exotic plants that don’t provide quality wildlife habitat. Instead, individual home or property owners can mitigate wildlife habitat loss in urban areas by landscaping with native plants following proper design principles. Furthermore, many people taking action over a large area (e.g., across a neighborhood) will help connect small …

The Case For American History In The Law-School Curriculum, Harold P. Southerland Oct 2006

The Case For American History In The Law-School Curriculum, Harold P. Southerland

ExpressO

This article argues for the teaching of American History throughout the first year of law school. I do not believe that students can fully understand the cases they are reading in other courses without a knowledge of environing context. Understanding American History -- which is many respects doesn't paint a flattering picture -- may also help students in making fundamental choices about what role they wish to play in their careers as lawyers. I believe it is time to recognize that too much of the profession is run as a business and not as a noble calling dedicated to helping …

Medical Self-Defense, Prohibited Experimental Therapies, And Payment For Organs, Eugene Volokh Oct 2006

Medical Self-Defense, Prohibited Experimental Therapies, And Payment For Organs, Eugene Volokh

ExpressO

Three sisters lie in adjoining hospital rooms. A fourth lives a block away. All are in deadly peril.

Alice is seven months pregnant, and the pregnancy threatens her life. Her fetus has long been viable, so she no longer has the Roe/Casey right to abortion on demand. But because her life is in jeopardy, she has a constitutional right to save her life by hiring a doctor to perform a post-viability abortion, though it means the death of a viable fetus. She would even have such a right if the pregnancy were only posing a serious threat to her health, …

Through The Looking Glass: Runaway Productions And "Hollywood Economics", Adrian H. Mcdonald Oct 2006

Through The Looking Glass: Runaway Productions And "Hollywood Economics", Adrian H. Mcdonald

ExpressO

This paper uses the issue of runaway production as a looking glass into the complex world of Hollywood economics and politics. As such, a broad overview of Hollywood's business practices, history, and technology are discussed so the reader can understand how runaway production (a major issue itself) is one piece of the Hollywood puzzle. Specifically, this paper attempts to study runaway productions from the Law and Economics approach described in Judge Richard Posner's text on the subject. Events in 2006 illustrate the continuing importance of runaway productions and CEIDR's August 2006 report is discussed in this paper.

Recently expanded, this …

Integrating Student Information Competencies Into Library Services, Jeanne M. Brown Oct 2006

Integrating Student Information Competencies Into Library Services, Jeanne M. Brown

Library Faculty Research

Many in the library field would argue that we have begun to perceive ourselves differently – especially in academic libraries. ALA’s Association of College and Research Libraries has been instrumental in creating or promoting a sea-change and much has gone into projecting an image of the librarian as an integral part of the educational enterprise. The message is that librarians are/ are becoming teachers.
