The "Cosmic Covenant" In The Letter To The Hebrews, Jeffrey P. Walker
The "Cosmic Covenant" In The Letter To The Hebrews, Jeffrey P. Walker
Master's Theses
The Topic The "cosmic covenant" in Hebrews reflects three main ideas: There exists a close affinity between the letter and Enochic Judaism; the letter is a product of Roman Gentile Christianity that emerged as a response to Jewish particularists in the Second Temple covenantal debate; and the writer's cosmic perspective had the simultaneous effect of supplanting and universalizing the Jewish covenantal concept. The Purpose The thesis offered here is that Hebrews presupposes a notion of "cosmic covenant" similar to that found in Enochic Judaism. Conclusions What has emerged is support for how the universalistic scope of 1 Enoch and its …

Miniature Circularly Polarized Rectenna With Reduced Out-Of-Band Harmonics, Mohammod Ali, Guangli Yang, Roger A. Dougal
Faculty Publications
Wireless embedded sensors are becoming increasingly important for many safety critical applications. Sensor batteries or capacitors must be charged as needed in order to achieve high data rate communications. A miniature circularly polarized rectenna operating at 5.5 GHz is introduced which, with the help of an integrated band-reject filter, reduces out-of-band harmonic emission significantly. The rectenna has a conversion efficiency of 74% with more than 50 dB out-of-band harmonic suppression at 11 GHz.

Pulsar Studies Of Tiny-Scale Structure In The Neutral Ism, Joel M. Weisberg, S. Stanimirovi´C
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Work
We describe the use of pulsars to study small-scale neutral structure in the interstellar medium (ISM). Because pulsars are high velocity objects, the pulsarEarth line of sight sweeps rapidly across the ISM. Multiepoch measurements of pulsar interstellar spectral line spectra therefore probe ISM structures on AU scales. We review pulsar measurements of small scale structure in HI and OH and compare these results with those obtained through other techniques.
As Soft As Tofu: Consumer Product Defamation On The Chinese Internet, Elizabeth Spahn
As Soft As Tofu: Consumer Product Defamation On The Chinese Internet, Elizabeth Spahn
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
This Article examines the most notorious Chinese internet defamation case, Wang Hong v. Maxstation, which awarded substantial damages against an individual consumer as well as two online magazines for criticizing a laptop product on the internet. The case created a widespread political controversy on the internet in China, highlighting an underlying tension in the current policies of the Chinese government, which promotes a more open market economy while maintaining tight censorship over public speech. The case developed landmark legal doctrine in China, extending judge made defamation law while ignoring the Chinese consumer protection statute. Extending defamation doctrine to include factual …
Are We There Yet?: Measuring Success Of Constitutional Reform, Maria Dakolias
Are We There Yet?: Measuring Success Of Constitutional Reform, Maria Dakolias
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
Like many other countries in the world, the United Kingdom has been modernizing its constitutional arrangements. But unlike all other countries, there is no codified, written constitution. Since 1997, that unwritten constitution has undergone a radical overhaul. Taken together, the changes to systems and institutions represent the most sustained program of reform in the United Kingdom for a century. The main question is whether these reforms were successful. What does success mean? As is well known, implementation is the key to success. So evaluating the reforms and discussing successes and challenges are not only important for the U.K. internal dialogue …
The Hidden Life Of Consumer Bankruptcy Reform, Jason J. Kilborn
The Hidden Life Of Consumer Bankruptcy Reform, Jason J. Kilborn
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
This Article offers a unique perspective on the heavily revised U.S. consumer bankruptcy law, which went effect on October 17, 2005, in light of a surprising discovery: It turns out that the U.S. consumer bankruptcy system as "reformed" resembles in many critical respects the consumer bankruptcy system in place for the past six years in the Netherlands. As a result of this serendipitous U.S.-Dutch convergence, years of experience under the Dutch consumer debt relief system can provide a rare glimpse into the future of the new U.S. system. The Dutch law in practice has diverged in significant ways from legislative …

Prophecy And Casuistry: Abortion, Torture And Moral Discourse, M. Cathleen Kaveny
Prophecy And Casuistry: Abortion, Torture And Moral Discourse, M. Cathleen Kaveny
Journal Articles
In turn of the 21st century United States there are serious moral disputes over issues such as abortion and torture among persons who see themselves as belonging to the same moral tradition. These disputes have not given rise to fruitful discussion about differences, but instead led to a breakdown of conversation and even of community. A part of these clashes and breakdowns are not the result of mutually inconsistent moral premises, but are driven by tensions between two styles of moral discourse, the prophetic and casuistical. The former invokes the absolute and fiery rhetorical style of biblical prophets while the …
Religion, Division, And The First Amendment, Richard W. Garnett
Religion, Division, And The First Amendment, Richard W. Garnett
Journal Articles
Nearly thirty-five years ago, in Lemon v. Kurtzman, Chief Justice Warren Burger declared that state programs or policies could excessive(ly) - and, therefore, unconstitutionally - entangle government and religion, not only by requiring or allowing intrusive public monitoring of religious institutions and activities, but also through what he called their divisive political potential. Chief Justice Burger asserted also, and more fundamentally, that political division along religious lines was one of the principal evils against which the First Amendment was intended to protect. And from this Hobbesian premise about the inten(t) animating the First Amendment, he proceeded on the assumption that …
Rational Alcohol Addiction: Evidence From The Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey, Badi H. Baltagi, Ingo Geishecker
Rational Alcohol Addiction: Evidence From The Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey, Badi H. Baltagi, Ingo Geishecker
Center for Policy Research
Alcohol consumption in Russia is legendary and has been reported to be the third leading cause of death in the former Soviet Union after heart disease and cancer. Are Russian alcohol consumers rational addicts? This paper uses eight rounds of a nationally representative Russian survey spanning the period 1994-2003 to estimate a rational addiction (RA) model for alcohol consumption. This is done in a panel data setting as well as on a wave by wave basis. The profile of the Russian drinker finds a huge difference between males and females and the model is estimated by gender. We do not …
The "Data Slant": Why Lack Of Media Generated By Minority Users Online Is An Offline Problem, Laura R. Rochet
The "Data Slant": Why Lack Of Media Generated By Minority Users Online Is An Offline Problem, Laura R. Rochet
Maurer Student Articles
User-generated media, such as blogs, vlogs, and podcasts, are rapidly becoming an integral aspect of political and commercial discourse. However, the information derived from this media is fundamentally biased due to the disproportionately low amount of minority user-generated media on the Web. In order to correct what I term the “data slant,” politicians and commercial entities must seek information from minorities offline to supplement data derived from user-generated media online, or markedly increase investment in measures designed to bridge the digital divide—the primary source of the data slant problem. Failure to act will lead to the neglect of a significant …
