Modeling Of Dielectric Mixtures Containing Conducting Inclusions With Statistically Distributed Aspect Ratio, Marina Koledintseva, Sandeep K. R. Chandra, Richard E. Dubroff, Robert W. Schwartz Jan 2006

Modeling Of Dielectric Mixtures Containing Conducting Inclusions With Statistically Distributed Aspect Ratio, Marina Koledintseva, Sandeep K. R. Chandra, Richard E. Dubroff, Robert W. Schwartz

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An analytical model of composites made of a dielectric base and randomly oriented metal inclusions in the form of nanorods is presented. This model is based on the generalized Maxwell Garnett (MG) mixing rule. In this model, the nanorod particles are modeled as prolate spheroids with a statistically normal distribution of their aspect ratios. It is shown that parameters of the distribution laws affect the frequency characteristics of the composites both at microwave and optical frequencies. The results of computations are represented.

Using Cognitive Mapping Techniques To Supplement Uml And Up In Information Requirements Determination, Keng Siau, Tan Xin Jan 2006

Using Cognitive Mapping Techniques To Supplement Uml And Up In Information Requirements Determination, Keng Siau, Tan Xin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Information requirements determination is a critical task in system development projects. Many human issues may hinder the efforts to accurately capture and clearly understand users' information requirements. In this paper, we review the cognitive underpinnings of some human issues, which are discussed in existing literature and relevant to information requirements determination. We then propose the use of cognitive mapping techniques in the process of information requirements determination. Three widely used cognitive mapping techniques - causal mapping, semantic mapping, and concept mapping – are briefly introduced in this article. A case is used to illustrate how to use these cognitive mapping …

E-Healthcare In Abc County Health Department (Abcchd): Trade-Offs Analysis And Evaluation, Keng Siau, Hwee-Joo Kam

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The issue of privacy stirred a tumultuous uproar when the ABC County Health Department (ABCCHD) was planning for an e-Healthcare system that utilized information technology to streamline the administration process of patients. ABCCHD had hired a software vendor, Info-Health, a company that specialized in information system development for the healthcare industry to help in the project. The privacy of patients with Sexually Transmitted Diseases/Human Immunity System was a thorny issue in the implementation of the e-Healthcare system. A trade-off between privacy and cost was discussed and debated. Three alternatives, with varying degrees of privacy and cost, were considered.

Creating Cascading Failure Scenarios In Interconnected Power Systems, Badrul H. Chowdhury, Sushant Barave Jan 2006

Creating Cascading Failure Scenarios In Interconnected Power Systems, Badrul H. Chowdhury, Sushant Barave

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The reported catastrophic failures of power systems from different geographical parts of the world often point to cascading outage events of system elements that eventually had led to system blackout. Although the initiating events of these cascading failures may, at times, be avoidable by vegetation management or proper protection settings, the occurrence of such an event as well as the eventual impact cannot always be predicted. There is much debate in the industry whether the operator has enough time to apply countermeasures to avoid blackouts. Besides, the process of determining effective countermeasures cannot be deemed accurate unless a system has …

Electrochemical Deposition And Characterization Of Fe₃O₄ Films Produced By The Reduction Of Fe(Iii)-Triethanolamine, Hiten M. Kothari, Elizabeth A. Kulp, Steven J. Limmer, Philippe Poizot, Eric W. Bohannan, Jay A. Switzer

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we demonstrate that films of magnetite, Fe3O4, can be deposited by the electrochemical reduction of a Fe(III)-triethanolamine complex in aqueous alkaline solution. the films were deposited with a columnar microstructure and a [100] preferred orientation on stainless steel substrates. In-plane electrical transport and magnetoresistance measurements were performed on the films after they were stripped off onto glass substrates. the resistance of the films was dependent on the oxygen partial pressure. We attribute the increase in resistance in O2 and the decrease in resistance in Ar to the oxidation and reduction of grain …

A Comparative Study Of The Properties Of Polar And Nonpolar Solvent/Solute/Polystyrene Solutions In Microwave Fields Via Molecular Dynamics, Mark J. Purdue, Macduff O. Okuom, Frank D. Blum, James M. D. Macelroy, D. F. O'Shea Jan 2006

A Comparative Study Of The Properties Of Polar And Nonpolar Solvent/Solute/Polystyrene Solutions In Microwave Fields Via Molecular Dynamics, Mark J. Purdue, Macduff O. Okuom, Frank D. Blum, James M. D. Macelroy, D. F. O'Shea

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The influence of an applied microwave field on the dynamics of methylamine-dichloromethane (DCM) mixtures bound within atactic polystyrene (a-PS) over a range of polymer densities from 30 to 94 wt % polymer was examined using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. This study is an extension of previous studies on methylamine transport in relatively polar polystyrene solutions of methanol and dimethylformamide [M. J. Purdue et al., J. Chem. Phys. 124, 204904 (2006)]. A direct comparison is made across the three types of polystyrene solutions. Consideration is given to both solvent and reagent transport within the polymer solutions under zero-field conditions and in …

Acid-Catalyzed Time-Efficient Synthesis Of Resorcinol-Formaldehyde Aerogels And Crosslinking With Isocyanates, Sudhir Mulik, Chariklia Sotiriou-Leventis, Nicholas Leventis

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Aerogels are open-cell foams derived from supercritical fluid (SCF) drying of wet gels. Their large internal void space is responsible for low thermal conductivity, high surface area and high acoustic impedance. Most aerogels are based on inorganic metal or semimetal oxide frameworks. Pekala and co-workers synthesized resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) organic aerogels by poly-condensation of resorcinol with formaldehyde in the presence of Na2CO3 as base catalyst, followed by drying with SCF CO2. Low-density RF aerogels prepared by this method exhibit high porosities (>80%), high surface areas (400-900 m2g-1), ultrafine cell-size (<500 > Å) …

Since their discovery in 1992,1,2 templating sol-gel silica with structuredirecting agents has resulted in new materials with ordered mesoporous (2-50 nm) structure that is investigated for application in areas as diverse as high surface area supports for caralysts or as nanostructured drug storage and release platforms.3 Structure-directing agents are typically surfactants ranging from cationic detergents such as alkyl-trimethylammonium salts with C8-C18 hydrocarbon chains to non-ionic tertiary amines, polyethylene oxide or amphiphilic triblock copolymers such as poly(ethyleneoxide)-blockpoly( propyleneoxide)-block-poly(ethyleneoxide) (e.g., Pluronic P123). Depending on the surfactant and the conditions (e.g., kind and concentration of catalyst) the structure of the mesopores may vary …

Segmental Dynamics In Poly(Methyl Acrylate) On Silica: Molecular-Mass Effects, Burak Metin, Frank D. Blum Jan 2006

Segmental Dynamics In Poly(Methyl Acrylate) On Silica: Molecular-Mass Effects, Burak Metin, Frank D. Blum

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The effect of molecular mass on the segmental dynamics of poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA) adsorbed on silica was studied using deuterium quadrupole-echo nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and modulated differential scanning calorimetry. Samples adsorbed on silica (all about 1.5 mg PMA/m2 silica) were shown to have more restricted segmental mobility, and higher Tg's, than the corresponding bulk PMA samples. Around the glass-transition region, adsorbed samples exhibited segmental mobility, which could be classified as heterogeneous due to a superposition of more-mobile and less-mobile components present in the deuterium NMR spectra. This heterogeneity was consistent with a motional gradient with more-mobile segments near the …

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Prologue He was as broken-down an old horseshoer as I had ever met, but by God could he shoe a horse. How he did it seemed to be some mystery acquired over a lifetime of bending over beneath a million horses and mules. And yet maybe there wasn’t any mystery at all. Maybe it was simply that over the course of those million or so animals he’d lost the hesitation and doubt and fear the rest of us struggled with from time to time, and just got shoes on the damn things—though with as much beauty and skill as a guy …

Observation On Foreign Children's Literature In Taiwan: The Future Of Local Children's Literature In Taiwan, Han-Lin Lin Jan 2006

Observation On Foreign Children's Literature In Taiwan: The Future Of Local Children's Literature In Taiwan, Han-Lin Lin

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Formosa-Taiwan is a small island with a unique culture. Because of its blood relationship with China, Taiwan inherits the traditional Chinese cultural features from mainland China. Inside Taiwan, the indigenous cultures are going to fade, while the increasing number of the children of foreign brides will play an important role in the future. On the other hand, culture from Japan and the West keep influencing Taiwan. We mix all resources together and hope to keep our culture growing in this rich land.

The thesis will focus on the development of local children's literature in Taiwan: the importance, influence, and problems …

Characterizing Prevalence And Severity Of Depression In Coronary Artery Disease Patients In Bangkok, Thailand, Anna Yusim Jan 2006

Characterizing Prevalence And Severity Of Depression In Coronary Artery Disease Patients In Bangkok, Thailand, Anna Yusim

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Numerous studies in North America, Europe and Australia have linked depression to increased risk of morbidity and mortality in coronary artery disease (CAD). Although the co-morbidity of depression and CAD is well documented in the western world, little work on the subject has been carried out in Asia. Differing depression presentations in Asia necessitate the use of culture-specific depression rating scales. This study sought to determine whether the correlation between CAD and depression documented in western countries also exists in an Asian nation: Thailand. It was hypothesized that rates of depressive symptoms were higher in Thai inpatients with either unstable …

Involvement In Early Head Start Home Visiting Services: Demographic Predictors And Relations To Child And Parent Outcomes, Helen Raikes, Beth L. Green, Jane Atwater, Ellen Kisker, Jill Constantine, Rachel Chazan-Cohen

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

One strand of home visiting research investigates effi cacy while another investigates under what conditions programs achieve outcomes. The current study follows the latter approach. Using a within-program design in a sample of 11 home-based sites in the Early Head Start Research and Evaluation study, this study found that three components of home visits (quantity of involvement including number of home visits, duration in the program, length of visits and intensity of service; quality of engagement including global ratings of engagement by staff and ratings of engagement during each home visit; and the extent to which home visits were child …

Resistance On The Imperial Terrain: Constructing A Counter-Empire In Paul Beatty’S The White Boy Shuffle, Brian Grosenbaugh

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Paul Beatty’s The White Boy Shuffle ostensibly proffers a new model for black leadership, a role filled by the protagonist, Gunnar Kaufman. Yet the cheeky tone with which Gunnar as frame narrator characterizes such a leader, likening his position as leader of black America to that of a Negro Demagogue and Ebon Pied Piper, immediately casts into doubt the ability of and desirability for a single person to represent such a wide spectrum of particular entities. Instead, what becomes clear is that such a reductive form of representation serves only to stifle the multivalent reality of postmodern life. As Gunnar …

Private Law Beyond The State? Europeanization, Globalization, Privatization, Ralf Michaels, Nils Jansen

Faculty Scholarship

Although the changing relation between private law and the state has become the subject of many debates, these debates are often unsatisfactory. Concepts like 'law', 'private law', and 'globalization' have unclear and shifting meanings; discussions are confined to specific questions and do not connect with similar discussions taking place elsewhere. In order to initiate the necessary broader approach, this article brings together the pertinent themes and aspects from various debates. It proposes a conceptual clarification of key notions in the debate- "private law," "state," "Europeanization," "globalization," and "privatization"- that should be of use beyond the immediate purposes of the rest …

The Secret Sharers: "Anthony Rivers" And The Appellant Controversy, 1601-2, John M. Finnis, Patrick Martin

Journal Articles

Historians have known of the letters of “Anthony Rivers,” recounting religious, political, and military affairs from the court in London in 1601–3, and of certain dispatches from Rome forwarded to Robert Cecil by Thomas Phelippes, “the Decipherer,” in 1602. In this article, Patrick Martin and John Finnis show that the letters and dispatches were integral to a coordinated effort by William Sterrell, secretary to the Earl of Worcester and long-time double agent, and Father Robert Persons, prefect in Rome of the Jesuit mission to England, to frustrate the climactic third appeal to the pope by the disaffected secular priests known …

Ranks And Rivals: A Theory Of Competition, Avishalom Tor, Stephen M. Garcia, Richard Gonzalez Jan 2006

Ranks And Rivals: A Theory Of Competition, Avishalom Tor, Stephen M. Garcia, Richard Gonzalez

Journal Articles

Social comparison theories typically assume a comparable degree of competition between commensurate rivals on a mutually important dimension. In contrast, however, the following set of studies reveals that the degree of competition between such rivals depends on their proximity to a standard. Studies 1-3 test the prediction that individuals become more competitive and less willing to maximize profitable joint gains when they and their commensurate rivals are highly ranked (e.g., #2 vs. #3) than when they are not (e.g., #202 vs. #203). Studies 4-6 then generalize these findings, showing that the degree of competition increases not only for high ranks …

The Neglected Political Economy Of Eminent Domain, Nicole Stelle Garnett Jan 2006

The Neglected Political Economy Of Eminent Domain, Nicole Stelle Garnett

Journal Articles

This Article challenges a foundational assumption about eminent domain - namely, that owners are systematically undercompensated because they receive only fair market value for their property. The Article shows that, in fact, scholars have overstated the undercompensation problem because they have focused on the compensation required by the Constitution, rather than on the actual mechanics of eminent domain. The Article examines three ways that Takers (i.e., non-judicial actors in the eminent domain process) minimize undercompensation. First, Takers may avoid taking high-subjective-value properties. Second, Takers frequently must pay more compensation in the form of relocation assistance. Third, Takers and property owners …

Intellectual Property, Privatization And Democracy: A Response To Professor Rose, Mark P. Mckenna Jan 2006

Intellectual Property, Privatization And Democracy: A Response To Professor Rose, Mark P. Mckenna

Journal Articles

The broad thesis of Professor Rose's article Privatization: The Road to Democracy? is an important reminder that no institution deserves all the credit for democratization, and that the success of any particular institution in promoting democracy depends to a greater or lesser extent on the existence and functioning of other political institutions. While protection of private property has proven quite important to successful democratic reform, we should not be lulled into thinking private property can carry the whole weight of reform. That lesson has particular significance in the context of intellectual property, given proponents general tendency to overstate the significance …

Washington's "War Against Terrorism" And Human Rights: The View From Abroad, Douglass Cassel Jan 2006

Washington's "War Against Terrorism" And Human Rights: The View From Abroad, Douglass Cassel

Journal Articles

"When it comes to human rights, there is no greater leader than the United States of America," White House spokesman Scott McClellan has said.

The view from abroad is less kind. A recent resolution of the European Parliament, for example, "condemns" our government's treatment of prisoners at Guantanamo. It urges Washington to guarantee all prisoners "minimum human rights in accordance with international human rights law and fair trial procedures" and to "immediately clarify the situation of the prisoners." European objections run so deep that a New York Times account finds a "high level of anger in Europe at reports that …

Personalization For English Learners At A Small Conversion High School, Mary Jewell Edd Jan 2006

Personalization For English Learners At A Small Conversion High School, Mary Jewell Edd

Dissertations

One of the most notable ways in which large, comprehensive high schools are working to meet the needs of the increasing numbers of English Language Learners (ELLs), and other students who may be struggling with academics, is by subdividing into smaller schools. One of the most appealing features of small schools is their emphasis on personalized instruction for students. While it takes many forms, personalizing education means knowing all students well and designing curriculum that meets their individual needs. Personalized learning environments hold enormous potential for improving the educational experiences, and even very lives, of English learners. The purpose of …

The Female Captivity Narrative: Blood, Water, And Orientalism, Diane Hoeveler Jan 2006

The Female Captivity Narrative: Blood, Water, And Orientalism, Diane Hoeveler

English Faculty Research and Publications

The story of how Europeans institutionalized, commodified, and controlled their anxious projections about Muslim "Others" is a long, complex, and ultimately tragic saga that the term "Orientalism" only partially conveys. Historians as well as literary, religious, political, and cultural critics have attempted for close to four hundred years to come to terms with the meaning of Islam and more broadly with the challenges that the Eastern world presents to the West. More importantly for the purposes of this essay, it is necessary to recognize that the binary model (Self/Other) adopted by Edward Said to define Orientalism has been challenged and …

Obligations Of Financial Advisers In Change-Of-Control Transactions: Fiduciary And Other Questions, Andrew F. Tuch Jan 2006

Obligations Of Financial Advisers In Change-Of-Control Transactions: Fiduciary And Other Questions, Andrew F. Tuch

Scholarship@WashULaw

Outside the United States, financial regulators have recently focused their attention on whether a financial adviser to a party in a change-of-control transaction (such as a takeover) is obliged to avoid being in positions of conflict with the interests of that party. Because financial advisers in these transactions are typically investment banks, the integrated structure of which may make conflicts of interest inevitable, such an obligation is likely to pose difficult challenges for the investment banking industry. The question is complicated by two apparently inconsistent standards being applied: the fiduciary obligation to avoid conflicts and the statutory obligation in many …
