Population Demography And Herbivory Of Trillium Grandiflorum, Thomas P. Rooney, Kendra C. Millam Jan 2006

Population Demography And Herbivory Of Trillium Grandiflorum, Thomas P. Rooney, Kendra C. Millam

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Numerous pedicellate and sessile Trillium species are endemic to eastern North America, where white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) populations have been growing in recent decades. Deer feed on Trillium plants, and because they often consume all leaves and flowers, the photosynthetic capacity of browsed plants is greatly diminished. To determine if deer can influence Trillium population dynamics, we review two recent studies that applied matrix population models to understand how deer browsing affects Trillium grandijlorum. Research conducted in the Great Lakes region indicated Trillium populations in which 6-12% plants were browsed declined 3.6% per year. Simulations show that …

Distinct Population Segments, Robin S. Waples Jan 2006

Distinct Population Segments, Robin S. Waples

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

In reflecting on how the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA) has dealt with biodiversity issues over the past thirty years, it is instructive to review the collection of fifty-seven papers in the 1988 volume by Wilson entitled Biodiversity (1988b). Anchored in time midway between enactment of the ESA in 1973 and the present (2006 and counting), Wilson's volume provides a snapshot of the issues related to biodiversity that occupied conservation biologists during the first half of these three decades. The vast majority (over 80 percent) dealt with higher levels of biological organization (species or ecosystems), while only two (less than …

The respondent companies firmly believe in an increasing future demand for DAM and VDP. When hiring specifically …

Incorporating Animal Behavior Into Seed Dispersal Models: Implications For Seed Shadows, Sabrina E. Russo, Stephen Portnoy, Carol K. Augspurger Jan 2006

Incorporating Animal Behavior Into Seed Dispersal Models: Implications For Seed Shadows, Sabrina E. Russo, Stephen Portnoy, Carol K. Augspurger

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Seed dispersal fundamentally influences plant population and community dynamics but is difficult to quantify directly. Consequently, models are frequently used to describe the seed shadow (the seed deposition pattern of a plant population). For vertebrate dispersed plants, animal behavior is known to influence seed shadows but is poorly integrated in seed dispersal models. Here, we illustrate a modeling approach that incorporates animal behavior and develop a stochastic, spatially explicit simulation model that predicts the seed shadow for a primate-dispersed tree species (Virola calophylla, Myristicaceae) at the forest stand scale. The model was parameterized from field-collected data on …

Race, Media Consolidation, And Online Content: The Lack Of Substitutes Available To Media Consumers Of Color, Leonard M. Baynes Jan 2006

Race, Media Consolidation, And Online Content: The Lack Of Substitutes Available To Media Consumers Of Color, Leonard M. Baynes

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

In its 2003 media ownership proceedings, the FCC relied on the existence of the Internet to provide justification for radically relaxing the FCC ownership rules. These rules limited the national audience reach of the broadcast licensees and the cross-ownership of different media properties by broadcasters and newspapers. In relaxing these rules, the FCC failed to recognize that a media submarket for African Americans and Latinos/as existed. This separate market is evidenced by the different television viewing habits of African Americans and Latinos/as as compared to Whites and Billboard magazine's delineation of R&B/urban music radio stations as a separate radio station …

Monitoring Survival Of Young In Ungulates: A Case Study With Rocky Mountain Elk, Nyeema Charmaine Harris

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Harris, Nyeema C., M.S., Spring 2007 Wildlife Biology MONITORING SURVIVAL OF YOUNG IN UNGULATES: A CASE STUDY WITH ROCKY MOUNTAIN ELK Chairperson: Daniel H. Pletscher Survival of young is an important determinant of population growth and persistence in ungulate populations. Therefore, monitoring the survival of young is an essential component in many research and management programs. The primary techniques used to monitor survival of young in ungulate populations are age ratios, obtained from herd composition surveys, and telemetry studies of marked individuals. Concerns about survival of young and the impact of predators on recruitment have recently arisen because of reported …

Transforming The Suburban Realm: A Call For Diversification In The Las Vegas Home-Building Process, Kory W Harris Jan 2006

Transforming The Suburban Realm: A Call For Diversification In The Las Vegas Home-Building Process, Kory W Harris

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

More U.S. residents live within suburban boundaries than they do the central cities and rural regions combined---creating a need for suburban design methods that adequately meet the desires of the suburban population. The design of suburban neighborhoods over the past several decades, however, has not adequately met the needs of its residents. This dilemma has only intensified over the past several years because of an increasingly varied group of potential hornebuyers. Local, state, and federal governments---as well as land developers, planners, and architects---need to raise awareness to the issues facing suburban design. By incorporating strategic design elements into the development …

Challenging Standard Conceptions Of Tradition, Science And Technology In 2006: Why Laws Prohibiting The Sale Of Violent Video Games To Minors Should Be Ultimately Upheld, Ilana Lubin

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that regulating the sale of violent video games to minors is constitutionally justifiable, supported by scientific evidence on adolescent brain development and legal precedents. It critiques the lack of a clear legal standard in court decisions and advocates for a nuanced approach that balances First Amendment rights with public safety concerns.

Biomechanical Evaluation Of Independent Transfers And Pressure Relief Tasks In Persons With Sci: Pilot Study, Tony J. Cresta

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Persons with paraplegia who use a manual wheelchair for mobility are at high risk for overuse injuries in the upper extremities. Years of shoulder overuse performing transfers, wheelchair propulsion, dressing, bathing, and household chores, (activities of daily living or ADL) leads to an increased incidence of cumulative trauma to the shoulders. Few studies have addressed the stressful task of wheelchair transfers among SCI individuals. The goal of this pilot study is to develop valid and reliable measurement technologies to quantify shoulder musculoskeletal stressors during wheelchair transfers and pressure relief tasks among individuals with SCI. Using a standard wheelchair, 10 participants …

An Examination Of Seasonal Growth And Survivorship Of Sigmodon Hispidus In Southeastern Virginia, Heather Alyssa Green

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

A reexamination of specific population dynamic aspects of Sigmodon hispidus, the hispid cotton rat, is necessary in order to gain additional knowledge and perspective on this species in its northernmost distribution on the east coast of the United States. Previous studies of Virginia cotton rats were based on data from necropsies, which do not allow for the determination of certain population characteristics, such as density, growth, and survival. General population trends and rates of growth and survival in males and females throughout the seasons in Virginia will also provide a basis for comparison with populations of cotton rats in …

Role Of Seed Dispersal In Mediating Competition Between Two Temperate Understory Plant Populations, Cornus Florida And Lindera Benzoin, In A Pennsylvania State Park, Vivianne Vejdani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

This study examines the demographic status of two co-occurring plant populations, Cornus florida and Lindera benzoin, with a stage matrix population projection model, and the potential for a competitive advantage in endozoochorous seed dispersal for L. benzoin in the quantity of seeds dispersed, the quality of seed dispersal, or a combination of the two. A plant pathology analysis indicates that the C. florida population has been impacted by the fungal pathogen Discula destructiva . The population model predicts a decline in the C. florida population and an increase in the L. benzoin population. Seed removal experiments revealed that significantly more …
