A Simple Numerical Method Of Cycle Jumps For Cyclically Loaded Structures, D. Cojocaru, Anette M. Karlsson Dec 2006

A Simple Numerical Method Of Cycle Jumps For Cyclically Loaded Structures, D. Cojocaru, Anette M. Karlsson

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

A method for accelerated numerical simulations of structures subjected to cyclic loading is investigated. Of particular interest is a class of structures where the structural properties evolve with time. The proposed method is based on conducting detailed finite element analysis for a set of cycles to establish a trend line, extrapolating the trend line spanning many cycles, and use the extrapolated state as initial state for additional FEA simulations. This includes a control function that automatically monitors the length of the cycle jump to ensure a realistic solution. We compare the proposed method to a reference calculation, where all incremental …

Original Investigation Correlated Joint Fluctuations Can Influence The Selection Of Steady State Gait Patterns In The Elderly, Max J. Kurz, Nikolaos Stergiou Dec 2006

Original Investigation Correlated Joint Fluctuations Can Influence The Selection Of Steady State Gait Patterns In The Elderly, Max J. Kurz, Nikolaos Stergiou

Journal Articles

This investigation utilized a Markov model to investigate the relationship of correlated lower extremity joint fluctuations and the selection of a steady state gait pattern in the young and elderly. Our model simulated the neuromuscular system by predicting the behavior of the joints for the next gait cycle based on the behavior exhibited in the preceding gait cycles. Such dependencies in the joint fluctuations have been noted previously in the literature. We speculated that compared to the young model, the characteristics of the correlated fluctuations in the elderly model would result in the selection of a different steady state gait …

Product Grading Management System, Ben Condol Dec 2006

Product Grading Management System, Ben Condol

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

Product Grading Management System (PGMS) is a comprehensive, statistical and stand-alone, control process application. This PGMS is web based and the first version being developed that will be utilized to define industry standards. Considering a broad array of products, the control process application in scrutiny is designed and deployed for two specific products: tomatoes and spinach. The company used in this paper is fictional; however, the examples are based on real scenarios experienced during a two year stint in the Supply Chain Management & Manufacturing industry. Product Quality Grading requires recording, tracking, managing and displaying quality data that is collected …

Inventory Management Of Medical Drugs, Srinivas Jujjavarapu Dec 2006

Inventory Management Of Medical Drugs, Srinivas Jujjavarapu

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

Inventory Management is the active control program that allows the management of sales, payments and purchases. Inventory Management are quite complex in nature and involve nonlinear, chaotic and unpredictable behavior thus requiring highly innovative quantitative techniques in order to model their structure. The aim of this project is to explore a relatively new and integrated approach to manage Inventory. This approach can be used successfully for managing models from any discipline. The new system provides detailed inventory information and reference resources to department personnel. It is easy to integrate easily with other applications such as order management and financial management.

Journal of Medical Education

We enrolled in this study a total of 150 medical students who had been admitted from 1999 to 2004 to study at Chung Shan Medical University; 75 of these students were recruited by Recommendation (RE) and the other 75 were recruited through the Joint University Entrance Exam (JE). The number and sex ratio of each grade of JE group were randomly selected to correspond to the RE group. The aim of the study is to investigate the academic performance and behavior differences between the RE and JE groups; in addition, we designed a questionnaire for students. The questionnaire encompassed four …

The Iraq Paradox: Minority And Group Rights In A Viable Constitution, Makau Mutua Dec 2006

The Iraq Paradox: Minority And Group Rights In A Viable Constitution, Makau Mutua

Buffalo Law Review

On October 15, 2005 an Iraq ravaged by a civil war spawned by the 2003 American invasion and subsequent occupation voted to decide the fate of a permanent constitution for the country. Although many Sunni Arabs took part in the vote, the referendum lost in the three governorates where they form a majority. But the constitution was approved because opponents only succeeded in recording "no" votes larger than two-thirds in only two of Iraq's eighteen provinces, in effect one province short of a veto. A two-thirds rejection in three provinces would have doomed the charter and the transition to a …

Bin Laden's War, David A. Westbrook Dec 2006

Bin Laden's War, David A. Westbrook

Buffalo Law Review

The GWOT/Global Jihad is different from prior conflicts (including the ideological struggle of the Cold War), and these differences have important strategic consequences which are not reflected in current US policy. First, US strategy has proceeded on traditional, and inapposite, understandings of the politics that informs this war. Second, radical neofundamentalism is a new form of political organization, attuned to a globalized world, with a distinctive form of violence quite different from the violence organized by the bureaucratic apparatus of a modern professional military grounded in a nation state. Third, the politics of radical neofundamentalism has strategic consequences. On the …
