The Art of Democracy / Democracy as Art: Creative Learning in Afterschool Comic Book Clubs
By Michael Bitz
Over the past three years, hundreds of community-based afterschool comic book clubs have been launched in cities across the United States. These clubs have drawn in thousands of underserved youths in grades 1–12. In these clubs, children plan, write, sketch, design, and produce original comic books and then publish and distribute their works for other children in the community to use as learning and motivational tools. This synthetic and analytic research project explores the dynamics, outcomes, and impacts of afterschool comic book …

Methods For Resistivity Measurements Related To Spacecraft Charging, John R. Dennison, Jerilyn Brunson, Prasanna Swaminathan, Nelson Green, A. Robb Frederickson Oct 2006

Methods For Resistivity Measurements Related To Spacecraft Charging, John R. Dennison, Jerilyn Brunson, Prasanna Swaminathan, Nelson Green, A. Robb Frederickson

All Physics Faculty Publications

A key parameter in modeling differential spacecraft-charging is the resistivity of insulating materials. This parameter determines how charge will accumulate and redistribute across the spacecraft, as well as the timescale for charge transport and dissipation. American Society for Testing and Materials constant-voltage methods are shown to provide inaccurate resistivity measurements for materials with resistivities greater than ~1017 Omegamiddotcm or with long polarization decay times such as are found in many polymers. These data have been shown to often be inappropriate for spacecraft-charging applications and have been found to underestimate charging effects by one to four orders of magnitude for …

On The Computation Of Secondary Electron Emission Models, Sebastien Clerc, John R. Dennison, Ryan Hoffmann, Jonathon Abbott Oct 2006

On The Computation Of Secondary Electron Emission Models, Sebastien Clerc, John R. Dennison, Ryan Hoffmann, Jonathon Abbott

All Physics Faculty Publications

Secondary electron emission is a critical contributor to the charge particle current balance in spacecraft charging. Spacecraft charging simulation codes use a parameterized expression for the secondary electron (SE) yield delta(Eo) as a function of the incident electron energy Eo. Simple three-step physics models of the electron penetration, transport, and emission from a solid are typically expressed in terms of the incident electron penetration depth at normal incidence R(Eo) and the mean free path of the SE lambda. In this paper, the authors recall classical models for the range R(Eo): a power …

Teaching Drama In The Esl Classroom, Lisa A. Collins Oct 2006

Teaching Drama In The Esl Classroom, Lisa A. Collins

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

In the following study, the author describes the effectiveness of teaching drama techniques to English as a Second Language high school students. A review of literature is provided that demonstrates how integrating ESL teaching strategies with those of drama enhances language acquisition. The end product of the study is a 1 semester drama unit which meets standards of learning established by the Colorado Department of Education. It includes specific examples, source material, and worksheets which accommodate a variety of learning styles and levels. Students will learn to work cooperatively, develop an ability to retain information, and increase literacy skills by …

Application Of Differentiation And Universal Design For Learning In The Second Grade Science Curriculum, Tami Wootton Flach Oct 2006

Application Of Differentiation And Universal Design For Learning In The Second Grade Science Curriculum, Tami Wootton Flach

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Differentiated instruction (DI) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) are philosophies that serve as teaching methodologies that address the needs of diverse learners in the regular classroom. Furthermore, DI can be used to engage students in instruction through different modalities, appeal to different interests, and use varied rates of instruction along with varied degrees of complexity. Also, UDL is an extension of DI, wherein the teacher provides alternatives that are built into the curriculum and suitable for most students. Additionally, the UDL model can be supported by the six principles of effective curriculum (Kame'emui & Simmons, 1999) to design curricular …

The Role Of Transportation In Selected Syracuse Child Care Centers, Syracuse University. Maxwell School. Community Benchmarks Program Oct 2006

The Role Of Transportation In Selected Syracuse Child Care Centers, Syracuse University. Maxwell School. Community Benchmarks Program

Community Benchmarks Program

This study examines the role of transportation for families with children enrolled in child care in Syracuse, New York. The focus of this report is 10 child care centers registered with Child Care Solutions of Onondaga County. The 10 centers were selected because 80% of the children enrolled are part of the federal free or reduced price lunch program. Child Care Solutions wanted to focus on this population because it has particular concern about enrollment in centers serving low-income children. One large inner-city center closed last spring due to lack of enrollment, a second came close to closing, and there …

Insurance Causation: Texas Law On First-Party Claims, Randall L. Smith, Fred A. Simpson Oct 2006

Insurance Causation: Texas Law On First-Party Claims, Randall L. Smith, Fred A. Simpson

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

This Article is principally concerned with insurance causation in situations where concurrent and consecutive perils, one covered and one excluded, combine to cause a single loss to insured property. Under those conditions, the legally responsible cause of loss to insured property is identified under two distinctly different rules when both of these conditions exist: (1) there is no order of succession in time of two or more events; and (2) damages from each of the concurrent causes of resulting loss cannot be distinguished.

In The Shadowlands: Fisher And The Outpatient Civil Commitment Of “Sexually Violent Predators” In Texas, Ronnie Hall

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

This Note will suggest some possible improvements to Texas's approach to handling the offenders it and other states have chosen to label "sexually violent predators," including the option that Texas replace its SVP statute with an inpatient civil commitment regime similar to those in other states. Part II of this Note will reflect some historical background behind civil commitment, including the traditional rationales underlying it, the early emphasis on procedural due process in nineteenth century American jurisprudence, and the development of commitment laws specifically aimed at sex offenders in the twentieth century. Part III will address the state of the …

Agendas, Arguments, And Political Theory, John D. Harman, Deborah Vanderbilt Oct 2006

Agendas, Arguments, And Political Theory, John D. Harman, Deborah Vanderbilt

Political Science Faculty/Staff Publications

If teaching is not the oldest profession, it certainly has a long historical pedigree. The frustrations teaching evokes likely have an equally long pedigree. One sees in Plato's Republic, for example, Socrates' frustration in trying to convey to Glaukon the aims of the educational scheme he is presenting to his interlocutors in Book 8. His evident difficulties relaying this information have doubtless struck sympathetic chords in the breasts of countless generations of teachers. Frustration has certainly been the case for the present authors, particularly in teaching the analysis and understanding of secondary commentary on classic texts; when reading such …

Interest Rate Linkages And Capital Market Integration: Evidence From The Americas, Bharat Bhalla, Anand Shetty Oct 2006

Interest Rate Linkages And Capital Market Integration: Evidence From The Americas, Bharat Bhalla, Anand Shetty

CRIF Seminar series

In this paper, we study the long-run co-movement among the real interest rates of the U.S., Canada, and a select group of Latin American countries to assess the extent of financial market integration between these countries during a period of high capital mobility. The findings of the study support a long-run relationship between the short-term U.S. real interest rate and those of the Latin American countries, while it fails to support such a relationship between the U.S. and Canadian real interest rates.

How To Efficiently Process Uncertainty Within A Cyberinfrastructure Without Sacrificing Privacy And Confidentiality, Luc Longpre, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In this paper, we propose a simple solution to the problem of estimating uncertainty of the results of applying a black-box algorithm -- without sacrificing privacy and confidentiality of the algorithm.
