Hierarchical State Estimation For Wide Area Power Systems, Srivatsan Lakshminarasimhan
Hierarchical State Estimation For Wide Area Power Systems, Srivatsan Lakshminarasimhan
All Theses
This thesis presents the application of hierarchical state estimation techniques to consolidate the state output of a wide area power system network. In a wide area network a large number of interconnections exist between various utilities of the wide area. Power transactions between areas occur over large distances and hence for better security there is a need to monitor the state of the entire wide area systems. Hierarchical state estimation is preferred over integrated state estimation, due to the reduced computational time.
Using existing state estimators of the member utilities of the wide area in the bottom level of hierarchical …
Haptics In Robotics And Automotive Systems, Erhun Iyasere
Haptics In Robotics And Automotive Systems, Erhun Iyasere
All Theses
Haptics is the science of applying touch (tactile) sensation and control to interaction with computer applications. The devices used to interact with computer applications are known as haptic interfaces. These devices sense some form of human movement, be it finger, head, hand or body movement and receive feedback from computer applications in form of felt sensations to the limbs or other parts of the human body. Examples of haptic interfaces range from force feedback joysticks/controllers in video game consoles to tele-operative surgery. This thesis deals with haptic interfaces involving hand movements. The first experiment involves using the end effector of …

Following In Their Footsteps: The Risks Of The Intergenerational Cycle Of Incarceration Among Inmates And Their Children, Megan Harris
All Theses
The purpose of this thesis was to test the proposition that parents who are currently incarcerated are at high risk for having children who are also incarcerated. Furthermore, several risk factors, commonly found in homes with previously or currently incarcerated members, were identified and analyzed to predict the odds of an incarcerated parent also having an incarcerated child.
The current study found that the majority of the demographic variables were significant predictors of child incarceration. Furthermore, only a few risk factors were found to be significant predictors of an inmate's child being incarcerated: an inmate having two or more prior …

Anchorage Community Survey 2007 Survey Sampling Design: Power And Sample Size, Shel Llee Evans
UAAJC Working Papers
This working paper documents the power analysis, literature review, and precision considerations contemplated in designing the Anchorage Community Survey’s (ACS) 2007 sampling design. The ACS will obtain at least 30 completed surveys from individuals in each of the 55 census tracts that make up the Anchorage Municipality, allowing us to discern a fairly small effect size of 0.30 with our smallest anticipated intraclass correlation and a moderate effect size of 0.40 with our largest anticipated intraclass correlation, both at 0.80 power level. This cluster sample size and number of clusters should yield sufficient precision to allow good estimation of variance …
The Competitive Effects Of Multiple Exchange Listed Options On The Us Options Market: A Look At Market Share, Jason Kunkel
The Competitive Effects Of Multiple Exchange Listed Options On The Us Options Market: A Look At Market Share, Jason Kunkel
All Theses
In an attempt to foster competition between financial exchanges, the Securities and Exchange Commission developed the National Market System Plan. With the exchanges competing for market share, there is potential for the loss of property rights of price quotes developed by the dominant exchange. The smaller exchanges will free ride on the dominant exchange`s price quotes and 'cream skim' the less risky trades. This research develops a model of CBOE (the dominant options exchange) market share to show evidence of 'cream skimming.' The variables in the model of market share give insight into the risk and profitability of the option …

Measurement Of BD Mixing Using Opposite-Side Flavor Tagging, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory Snow, D0 Collaboration
Kenneth Bloom Publications
We report on a measurement of the Bd0 mixing frequency and the calibration of an opposite-side flavor tagger in the D0 experiment. Various properties associated with the b quark on the opposite side of the reconstructed B meson are combined using a likelihood-ratio method into a single variable with enhanced tagging power. Its performance is tested with data, using a large sample of reconstructed semileptonic B → μD0X and B → μD*X decays, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 1 fb-1. The events are divided into groups depending on …

A Multidimensional Scaling And Participatory Design Approach To Classify Open Ended Aircraft Maintenance Data, Kunal Kapoor
A Multidimensional Scaling And Participatory Design Approach To Classify Open Ended Aircraft Maintenance Data, Kunal Kapoor
All Dissertations
The quality assurance data to be analyzed by the web-based surveillance and auditing tool (WebSAT) is both qualitative and quantitative. The forced responses to checklist questions provide a definitive outcome identifying the effectiveness of the four quality assurance work functions. On the other hand, open-ended responses, the second type of response for capturing maintenance errors, are qualitative in nature since they reflect what the auditors and quality assurance representatives observe during their interactions at vendor locations. This research proposes to apply the statistical technique of multidimensional scaling (MDS) and the User centered Design (UCD) method of Participatory Design (PD) to …

First-Known Hypnopompic Hallucination Occurring In-Hospital: Case Report, Paul Ballas D.O. (Pgy2)
Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry
Despite the high prevalence of hypnopompic hallucinations in the community, to our knowledge there are no reports that have been published in the English literature of these phenomenon observed by staff in the hospital setting. Psychiatric or neurological evaluation often ensues if a patient reports hallucinations in other circumstances, but when they are reported in connection with sleep, further evaluation is rarely performed because such events are common in the general populace. Our report emphasizes the distinction between hypnopompic and hypnagogic hallucination as an ongoing feature of life that someone is aware of, which we believe to be the case …

Affyminer: Mining Differentially Expressed Genes And Biological Knowledge In Genechip Microarray Data, Guoqing Lu, The V Nguyen, Yuannan Xia, Michael E. Fromm
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Background: DNA microarrays are a powerful tool for monitoring the expression of tens of thousands of genes simultaneously. With the advance of microarray technology, the challenge issue becomes how to analyze a large amount of microarray data and make biological sense of them. Affymetrix GeneChips are widely used microarrays, where a variety of statistical algorithms have been explored and used for detecting significant genes in the experiment. These methods rely solely on the quantitative data, i.e., signal intensity; however, qualitative data are also important parameters in detecting differentially expressed genes.
Results: AffyMiner is a tool developed for detecting differentially …

Heat Inactivation Of Thermo-Resistant Bacteria Isolated From Poultry Offal, Lina Ramirez-Lopez
All Theses
ABSTRACT The presence of thermo-resistant bacteria in products from the rendering industry is a concern in the United States because only about 80% of the rendering industries use thermal processing to eliminate bacteria. The objective of this study was to determine the thermal inactivation characteristics of thermo-resistant bacteria from raw rendering materials. Ground beef with 21% protein, 19% fat, and 60% moisture was used as a model media to simulate raw rendering material. Raw animal co-products were heated at 91, 95, 96¡C for 90 min, then surviving bacteria were recovered. These heat resistant isolates were inoculated into meat samples then …

The relationship of the recurrent visual signals in contemporary culture and the physical routine of living in the culture begin to build as layers in the fabric or patterns of everyday. My use of pattern (both mass produced fabric, and painted surface) imitates the repetitious nature of visual stimuli in American culture as well as the viewer's familiarity with object and image recognition. I investigate the language of signals and human thinking relying heavily on the viewer's link to familiarity and how that may provoke them to read the paintings. To do this, I draw directly from the use of …
Investigation Of Flow And Microstructure In Rheometric And Processing Flow Conditions For Liquid Crystalline Pitch, Santanu Kundu
Investigation Of Flow And Microstructure In Rheometric And Processing Flow Conditions For Liquid Crystalline Pitch, Santanu Kundu
All Dissertations
A fundamental understanding of flow and its influence on the microstructure is required to obtain carbon materials with desired properties. The objective of this research was to investigate the flow and microstructural behavior of a synthetic mesophase pitch (AR-HP) in rheometric and processing flow conditions. In addition, simulation studies were performed to establish a frame work for modeling the flow behavior of this complex material in different flow situations.
The steady-shear viscosities obtained from a cone-plate rheometer during increasing rate-sweep experiments exhibited a shear-thinning region (Region I) with a slope of about -0.2 and a plateau (Region II) region. The …

Use Of Personas For User Interface Design: Results Of Field And Experimental Studies , Pallavi Dharwada
All Dissertations
Persona is a fictitious user serving as a role model for designers, helping them make difficult decisions from the users' perspective during the interface design process. This concept, which was introduced by Alan Cooper in 1999, has been found to be a powerful tool for engaging the designers with the users. Although personas do not replace the rich data acquired through user testing, they enhance the interface development process by focusing the designers' attention on the target user until the interface qualifies for testing. Recognizing the benefits of persona, many companies, including the Fortune 500 have embraced this concept as …
Modeling Of The Transient Behavior Of Heat Pipes With Room-Temperature Working Fluids, Pascal Brocheny
Modeling Of The Transient Behavior Of Heat Pipes With Room-Temperature Working Fluids, Pascal Brocheny
All Dissertations
The heat pipe is a capillary-driven and two-phase flow device, capable of transporting and converting large amounts of energy with minimal losses. As a means of thermal management, uses of heat pipe technology not only include thermal control of satellites and spacecrafts in aerospace applications, but also the cooling of electronic components for ground applications. Recently, there has been a flourishing interest in exploring the use of heat pipe technology in the automotive field. However, in many thermal control applications, heat pipes using room-temperature working fluids, such as water or ammonia, with operating temperatures between 200 K (-73ºC) and 550 …

“Pick”Ering The Speech Rights Of Public School Teachers: Arguing For A Movement By Courts Toward The Hazelwood-Tinker Standard Under The First Amendment, Heather P. Bennett
ExpressO
This Note addresses freedom of speech issues facing the nation's public schools, concentrating on the recent decision by the District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, Lee v. York County School Division, for the final paper in my First Amendment course. Ultimately, this Note analyzes the court’s decision in this case and both standards set forth by the Supreme Court in dealing with free speech rights in the field of public education, which are currently creating a circuit split between the Courts of Appeals. The Note argues that the Hazelwood-Tinker standard applied to student speech should be the general …

European Private Law: A Plea For A Spontaneous Legal Order, Jan M. Smits
ExpressO
This contribution focuses on European integration through private law. After a sketch of the existing European acquis in the field of the law of contract, tort and property, the question is discussed whether there is a need for harmonisation in view of the goals the European Union set itself. Subsequently, the question of how to design a future European private law is answered. In the field of contract law, the European Commission now follows a two-track policy: it intends to draft a ‘Common Frame of Reference’ (‘CFR’) as well as furthering the debate on the possibility of an optional code. …

The Gospels And The Reader, Sandra Marie Schneiders
The Gospels And The Reader, Sandra Marie Schneiders
Jesuit School of Theology
From at least the eighteenth to the mid-twentieth century the prevailing understanding of history and of texts and their meaning was almost exclusively object-centred. The reader of the text seldom came into view, and if she or he did, the exegesis was suspect. History was understood as a free-standing state of affairs which existed 'in the past' independently of the reader. Texts were free-standing semantic containers in which a single, stable meaning was intentionally embedded by the author. The meaning in the biblical texts was presumed to be primarily information about history. Thus, the task of the biblical scholar was …
