African-American Mitochondrial Dnas Often Match Mtdnas Found In Multiple African Ethnic Groups, Bert Ely, Jamie Lee Wilson, Fatimah Jackson, Bruce A. Jackson Oct 2006

African-American Mitochondrial Dnas Often Match Mtdnas Found In Multiple African Ethnic Groups, Bert Ely, Jamie Lee Wilson, Fatimah Jackson, Bruce A. Jackson

Faculty Publications

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplotypes have become popular tools for tracing maternal ancestry, and several companies offer this service to the general public. Numerous studies have demonstrated that human mtDNA haplotypes can be used with confidence to identify the continent where the haplotype originated. Ideally, mtDNA haplotypes could also be used to identify a particular country or ethnic group from which the maternal ancestor emanated. However, the geographic distribution of mtDNA haplotypes is greatly influenced by the movement of both individuals and population groups. Consequently, common mtDNA haplotypes are shared among multiple ethnic groups. We have studied the distribution of mtDNA …

Exploration Of Distributional Models For A Novel Intensity-Dependent Normalization , Nicola Lama, Patrizia Boracchi, Elia Mario Biganzoli Oct 2006

Exploration Of Distributional Models For A Novel Intensity-Dependent Normalization , Nicola Lama, Patrizia Boracchi, Elia Mario Biganzoli

COBRA Preprint Series

Currently used gene intensity-dependent normalization methods, based on regression smoothing techniques, usually approach the two problems of location bias detrending and data re-scaling without taking into account the censoring characteristic of certain gene expressions produced by experiment measurement constraints or by previous normalization steps. Moreover, the bias vs variance balance control of normalization procedures is not often discussed but left to the user's experience. Here an approximate maximum likelihood procedure to fit a model smoothing the dependences of log-fold gene expression differences on average gene intensities is presented. Central tendency and scaling factor were modeled by means of B-splines smoothing …

Dynamic Characterization Of Web Application Interfaces, Marc Randall Fisher Ii, Sebastian Elbaum, Gregg Rothermel Oct 2006

Dynamic Characterization Of Web Application Interfaces, Marc Randall Fisher Ii, Sebastian Elbaum, Gregg Rothermel

School of Computing: Technical Reports

Web applications are increasingly prominent in society, serving a wide variety of user needs. Engineers seeking to enhance, test, and maintain these applications and third-party programmers wishing to utilize these applications need to understand their interfaces. In this paper, therefore, we present methodologies for characterizing the interfaces of web applications through a form of dynamic analysis, in which directed requests are sent to the application, and responses are analyzed to draw inferences about its interface. We also provide mechanisms to increase the scalability of the approach. Finally, we evaluate the approach’s performance on six non-trivial web applications.

The Flight From Arbitration: An Empirical Study Of Ex Ante Arbitration Clauses In Publicly-Held Companies’ Contracts, Theodore Eisenberg, Geoffrey Miller Oct 2006

The Flight From Arbitration: An Empirical Study Of Ex Ante Arbitration Clauses In Publicly-Held Companies’ Contracts, Theodore Eisenberg, Geoffrey Miller

ExpressO

We study a data set of 2,858 contracts contained as exhibits in Form 8-K filings by reporting corporations over a six month period in 2002 for twelve types of contracts and a seven month period in 2002 for merger contracts. Because 8-K filings are required only for material events, these contracts likely are carefully negotiated by sophisticated parties who are well-informed about the contract terms. These contracts, therefore, provide evidence of efficient ex ante solutions to contracting problems. The vast majority of contracts did not require arbitration. Only about 11 percent of the contracts included binding arbitration clauses. The rate …

St. George Tucker’S Second Amendment: Deconstructing ‘The True Palladium Of Liberty’, Stephen P. Halbrook

ExpressO

St. George Tucker, known as “America’s Blackstone” and author of the first commentary on the Constitution in 1803, described the Second Amendment right of the people to keep and bear arms as “the true palladium of liberty.” In a recent symposium at the William and Mary College of Law, Prof. Saul Cornell presented Tucker as an adherent of the view that the Amendment guarantees a collective or civic right to bear arms in the militia, not an individual right to have arms for self defense or as a dissuasion to tyranny. In response, my article scrutinizes Tucker’s work in detail …

Combating Terrorism In Bosnia-Herzegovina: Explaining And Assessing Article 201 Of The Bosnian Criminal Code, Henry M. Lovat Oct 2006

Combating Terrorism In Bosnia-Herzegovina: Explaining And Assessing Article 201 Of The Bosnian Criminal Code, Henry M. Lovat

ExpressO

This paper explores the legal measures that have been enacted in Bosnia-Herzegovina (BiH) to counter the threat of terrorism, focusing particularly on the international and domestic political context in which the reform of the Bosnian criminal code was carried out, on the apparent origins of Article 201 of the BiH criminal code in the European Union Framework Decision on Combating Terrorism of June 2002 and on the strengths and weaknesses of this definition in the Bosnian context. The paper argues firstly that the events of 9/11, while certainly of significance, were less salient to the definition of terrorism adopted in …

Reifying Religion While Lost In Translation: Mirza Mazhar Jan-I-Janan (D.1781) On The Hindus, Sherali Tareen Oct 2006

Reifying Religion While Lost In Translation: Mirza Mazhar Jan-I-Janan (D.1781) On The Hindus, Sherali Tareen

Macalester Islam Journal

This paper examines the life and thought of one of the leading Muslim revivalist thinkers in 18th century India, Mirza Mazhar Jan-i-Janan (1699-1781) in an effort to understand the relationship, if any, between the structures of knowledge that informed colonial conceptions of India’s religious topography and 18th century projects of intra-religious and cross-religious interpretation (such as that conducted by Jan-i Janan)? In addition, the project aims at informing the inquiry as to the extent to which the process of reification that led to the development of a unified notion of ‘Hinduism’ in the modern era already was underway in the …

Effects Of "In-Your-Face" Television Discourse On Perceptions Of A Legitimate Opposition, Diana C. Mutz Oct 2006

Effects Of "In-Your-Face" Television Discourse On Perceptions Of A Legitimate Opposition, Diana C. Mutz

Department of Political Science: Hendricks Symposium

How do Americans acquire the impression that their political foes have some understandable basis for their views, and thus represent a legitimate opposition? How do they come to believe that reasonable people may disagree on any given political controversy? Given that few people talk regularly to those of opposing perspectives, some theorize that mass media, and television in particular, serve as an important source of exposure to the rationales for oppositional views. A series of experimental studies suggests that television does, indeed, have the capacity to encourage greater awareness of oppositional perspectives. However, common characteristics of televised political discourse cause …

Scaling The Zachman Framework A Software Development Methodology For Non-Enterprise Applications, Carla L. Thompson Oct 2006

Scaling The Zachman Framework A Software Development Methodology For Non-Enterprise Applications, Carla L. Thompson

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The software development methodology brought forth in John Zachman's System Architecture Framework can be used to design a wide range of information systems. While the Zachman Framework is very robust and typically used for developing large scale Enterprise Applications, this project will demonstrate that the framework can easily be scaled to fit a small scale non-Enterprise Application. The Zachman Framework is a six by six matrix that breaks down system requirements into cells that document the system. Each row of the Zachman Framework will be examined to determine if the documentation would be needed. A discussion about the appropriateness of …

Fixed-Effect Estimation Of Technical Efficiency With Time-Invariant Dummies, Qu Feng, William C. Horrace Oct 2006

Fixed-Effect Estimation Of Technical Efficiency With Time-Invariant Dummies, Qu Feng, William C. Horrace

Economics - All Scholarship

“Within” estimation of the fixed-effect stochastic frontier model does not identify parameters on time-invariant explanatory variables. If time-invariant variables are important production inputs, then standard efficiency estimates are biased. This note details bias correction, when time-invariant inputs are dummy variables.
