Effects Of An External Field And Dissipation On Decoherence, Jian Zuo Jan 2006

Effects Of An External Field And Dissipation On Decoherence, Jian Zuo

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Decoherence is the suppression of the interference of quantum states. It plays important roles in the study of the quantum-classical transition. It is also the major obstacle in the implementation of various schemes of quantum computers. Decoherence can be affected by many factors. The interactions between quantum systems of interest and dissipative environments cause the extensively studied environment-induced-decoherence. Decoherence can also occur as the result of a temperature effect. A recent experiment investigated the engineering of decoherence, which involves applying an external field to the quantum system. In this thesis, we study the effect of an external field on decoherence …

Factors That Influence Traditional-Age, High-Achieving Students To Enroll At A Research-Extensive University In The Southern Region Of The United States, Roy Cleveland Brooks, Jr.

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The primary purpose of this study was to determine if a model existed that significantly increased the researcher's ability to accurately explain the enrollment status of high-achieving freshmen based on the influence of selected demographic and academic characteristics. Since World War II, the need for students to obtain an outstanding postsecondary education in order to compete for the best positions in today's job market has become increasingly important. Thus, the need exists for higher education institutions to offer competitive academic programs that will attract top students and faculty. Since the number of graduating high school students is predicted to decline …

Effect Of Nursery Media Particle Size Distribution On Container-Grown Woody Ornamental Production, Michael Paul Richard Jan 2006

Effect Of Nursery Media Particle Size Distribution On Container-Grown Woody Ornamental Production, Michael Paul Richard

LSU Master's Theses

Bark is a renewable resource with limited availability as a medium used by the nursery industry. Previous research has indicated that pinebark and hardwood bark can be used as a substrate in nursery production. The objective of this study is to determine the effect of bark source (pinebark and hardwood bark), particle size distribution, and irrigation frequency on the growth and quality of azalea (Rhododendron indicum ‘Red Ruffle’), Indian hawthorn (Rhapeolepis indica ‘Snow’), and ligustrum (Ligustrum japonicum). Treatments were arranged in a factorial 6x2x2 plot design, with six soil mixes, two barks, two irrigation frequencies, and six blocks totaling 144 …

Body Image And Expected Future Interaction, Alecia M. Santuzzi, P.L. Metzger, J.B. Ruscher Jan 2006

Body Image And Expected Future Interaction, Alecia M. Santuzzi, P.L. Metzger, J.B. Ruscher

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

This study examined impression formation as a function of anticipated future social interaction among women with varying body image perceptions. Seventy-four women participated in a getto- know-you interview with a female confederate, and either did or did not anticipate additional interaction. When participants anticipated future interaction, more negative body image predicted less positive relationship expectations. However, when not expecting future interaction, negative body image predicted positive relationship expectations. This effect was partially mediated by an increased focus on the self and partner as a collective unit. Results suggest a qualification to previous research conclusions about negative interpersonal perceptions among stigmatized …

New Federal Paternity Laws: Securing More Fathers For Children Of Unwed Mothers, Jeffrey A. Parness Jan 2006

New Federal Paternity Laws: Securing More Fathers For Children Of Unwed Mothers, Jeffrey A. Parness

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Public policy demands that American lawmakers, both federal and state, more vigorously promote the early, accurate, informed, and conclusive designations of fathers in law around the time children are born. There is, in particular, an urgent need today to develop legal standards that better promote more birth certificate designations of paternity for children born to unwed mothers. Public policy also demands that where paternity designations do not accurately reflect the requisite genetic ties with children, paternity laws should be more fair and just in allowing paternity disestablishment. This Article reviews the federal mandates within the Social Security Act both on …

American General Jurisdiction Trial Courts: New Visions, New Guidelines, Jeffrey A. Parness Jan 2006

American General Jurisdiction Trial Courts: New Visions, New Guidelines, Jeffrey A. Parness

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Today, American trial courts are trying less and managing more private civil cases. They are also losing many private claims to other dispute resolvers. The traditional role of the trial judge as a neutral, detached, and passive adjudicator for private civil cases has given way to the trial judge who is a more active case manager, a more aggressive settlement facilitator, and an appellate-type reviewer of case decisions first made elsewhere. Unfortunately, contemporary written civil procedure laws do not reflect this new reality, increasingly reflecting only legend. New general visions of contemporary trial court decision making would help civil procedure …

Instituting Innocence Reform: Wisconsin's New Governance Experiment, Katherine R. Kruse Jan 2006

Instituting Innocence Reform: Wisconsin's New Governance Experiment, Katherine R. Kruse

Scholarly Works

The DNA exoneration cases of the past two decades have provided a window into what hasn't been working in the criminal justice system and an agenda for criminal justice reform. The challenge currently facing the innocence reform community is to translate this agenda into concrete reforms that institute and sustain best practices for the investigation and prosecution of crimes, while allowing flexibility for the understanding of best practices to continue to evolve. In 2005, Wisconsin underwent a breathtaking course of legal reform in two of the problem areas that have plagued wrongful convictions: mistaken eyewitness identification and false confession. The …

Comparison Of Food Security Status, Nutrient Intakes, Body Mass Index, And Multiple Diseases Among Self-Reported Depressed And Non-Depressed Female Food Stamp Recipients In Southeast Louisiana, Yifang Bai

LSU Master's Theses

The objectives of this study were to explore the relationships among depression and food security status, dietary nutrient intakes, sociodemographic characteristics, body mass index (BMI), and the presence of chronic diseases in a female food stamp recipient population (n = 66) in Southeast Louisiana. Women were dichotomized by stated depression and descriptive statistics on socioeconomic characteristics and mean nutrient intakes were presented for each group. Logistic regression models were used to determine the relationship of stated depression with food security status, selected sociodemographic characteristics, nutrient intakes, body mass index, and the number of chronic diseases reported. The percentage of women …

Integration Of Conceptual Mathematical Relationships Into Constant Time Delay Instruction, Bethany Ann Porter Jan 2006

Integration Of Conceptual Mathematical Relationships Into Constant Time Delay Instruction, Bethany Ann Porter

LSU Master's Theses

There is constant debate over mathematics education in the United States. One central controversy is whether or not the current methods used to teach students mathematics are effective. Some scholars believe that students are not getting enough practice and that they are not getting a good conceptual understanding of mathematics. It has been shown that mathematics equations are rich in patterns and inter-relationships and when children understand these relationships they have higher mathematic skill levels than their peers who do not. This study examined the effectiveness of using an empirically supported, fast paced mastery oriented teaching procedure that promotes automaticity …

Viewing Novels, Reading Films: Stanley Kubrick And The Art Of Adaptation As Interpretation, Charles Bane Jan 2006

Viewing Novels, Reading Films: Stanley Kubrick And The Art Of Adaptation As Interpretation, Charles Bane

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Greg Jenkins has observed that adaptation "is a presence that is woven into the very fabric of film culture." Although this statement is true, no definitive theory of adaptation exists. Critics and scholars ponder adaptation, yet cannot seem to agree on what makes an adaptation a success or a failure. The problem of adaptation stems from many sources. What, if anything, does a film owe the novel on which it is based? How, if possible, does a film remain faithful to its source? Is a film a version of a story or its own autonomous work of art? Who is …

Studies Of Epigenetic Instability In Human Normal And Diseased Vulva Skin, Zhengyu Zhang Jan 2006

Studies Of Epigenetic Instability In Human Normal And Diseased Vulva Skin, Zhengyu Zhang

LSU Master's Theses

Epigenetic modification is another mechanism involved in the cancer development besides classic mutations such as deletion. Aberrant promoter methylation and associated chromatin modification have been frequently reported in various tumors of different clinical stages. Hypermethylation has been frequently observed in tumor suppressor genes and causes reduced transcripts of these genes. Hypomethylation also has been reported to be involved in activation of oncogenes. Inactivation of the X chromosome and the imprinting of gamete DNA depend on the methylation patterns in the promoter region. Understanding methylation mechanisms could be helpful to diagnosis of early stage tumorgenesis or offer molecular markers for detecting …

Investigation Of The Effects Of Detached Breakwaters At Holly Beach And Grand Isle, Louisiana, Brandon Edwards Jan 2006

Investigation Of The Effects Of Detached Breakwaters At Holly Beach And Grand Isle, Louisiana, Brandon Edwards

LSU Master's Theses

Two detached breakwater projects in Louisiana were investigated. At Grand Isle, Louisiana, breakwaters do not seem to have caused any sediment deposition. Airphoto analysis indicated that the breakwater field has caused changes in morphology, though. At Holly Beach, Louisiana, breakwaters have caused sediment deposition, specifically low tide tombolos. Analysis of survey data and tracer data indicated that the beach/breakwater system is in a state of dynamic equilibrium at high tide, and static equilibrium at low tide. In addition, wave heights measurements were made in the vicinity of one breakwater segment and compared to incident wave height. Examination of the data …

Resolving Civilian-Police Complaints In New York City: Reflections On Mediation In The Real World, Raymond W. Patterson Jan 2006

Resolving Civilian-Police Complaints In New York City: Reflections On Mediation In The Real World, Raymond W. Patterson

Scholarly Works

The Civilian Complaint Review Board mediation program associated with the New York City Police Department appears to be an attractive alternative to the investigative process offered to complainants, offering the possibility of a higher level of satisfaction for both the civilian and the police officer. According to the scheme devised by the agency and the NYPD, cases that meet mediation guidelines should move smoothly from investigations through the approval process, coming to a scheduled mediation in a timely manner. Complaints containing some factor making them inappropriate for mediation should be able to be identified during that approval process, thus ensuring …

Analysis Of Bioengineered Concrete For Use In A Submerged Reef Type Breakwater, Tyler Ray Ortego Jan 2006

Analysis Of Bioengineered Concrete For Use In A Submerged Reef Type Breakwater, Tyler Ray Ortego

LSU Master's Theses

The oysterbreak is a method of growing an oyster reef into a wave attenuating device. A study was conducted to determine an optimal material for the oysterbreak. As oysters grow on the oysterbreak, wave energy in the lee of the structure is reduced. It was predicted that more rapid oyster growth would lead to a more rapid reduction of wave energy. Louisiana is losing coastal marshes at an alarming rate. Wave action from storms erodes sediments from Louisiana's shorelines and barrier islands. Structures such as the oysterbreak may be used to protect Louisiana’s fragile shorelines. A material for the oysterbreak …

Background Conglomerates In Alkan's Quasi-Faust, Op. 33, No. 2, Matthew James Steinbron Jan 2006

Background Conglomerates In Alkan's Quasi-Faust, Op. 33, No. 2, Matthew James Steinbron

LSU Master's Theses

Various approaches have been used over the past 50 years to describe and analyze works that exhibit tonality but have more than one tonic. This paper focuses solely on a subcategory of such works: those that begin in one key and end in another, the first key being permanently replaced by the second. The most prominent systems of terminology and analysis for such works include “progressive tonality,” “directional tonality,” “interlocking structures,” and “background conglomerates.” After examining these systems, “background conglomerates” is determined to best suit works that permanently change tonics. This approach, which was introduced by Harald Krebs, employs a …

The Effects Of Perceptions On Consumer Acceptance Of Genetically Modified (Gm) Foods, Jae-Hwan Han Jan 2006

The Effects Of Perceptions On Consumer Acceptance Of Genetically Modified (Gm) Foods, Jae-Hwan Han

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study investigates the effects of risk/benefit beliefs on consumer purchase intentions for genetically modified (GM) foods. A random, national, mail survey is conducted. Three main problems are addressed in the study. The first problem addressed is to analyze the relationship between consumers risk/ benefit beliefs regarding GM foods, and their willingness to buy GM crop and meat products. The second problem deals with linkages between a consumer’s risk/benefit beliefs about GM foods and willingness to pay (WTP) for GM foods with a benefit disclosure. The third problem addressed is to test a causal relationship between knowledge and trust toward …

The Discursive Practices Of Chemical Discipline, Roger L. Pippin Jan 2006

The Discursive Practices Of Chemical Discipline, Roger L. Pippin

LSU Master's Theses

This project examines the history of science and its relationship to the popular, or lay, audience, a problem of rhetorical inquiry since Aristotle. This project also explores the implications of the emerging trend in lay literature on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) to transform the causal mechanism underlying ADHD so that it is isomorphic in structure and parallel in content to the most contemporary and fetishized sciences of the human body. In other words, how ADHD was once a problem of brain chemistry, and is now a problem of genetics is not simply a matter of scientific practice on the …

To Err Is Human, Keith A. Rowley

Scholarly Works

This essay reviews Allan Farnsworth's final book, Alleviating Mistakes: Reversal and Forgiveness for Flawed Perceptions (Oxford U. Press 2004). There are many kinds of mistakes. One kind - a rational, well-intended decision or act that results in unanticipated, negative consequences - was the principal subject of Allan Farnsworth's previous foray into the realm of contractual angst: Changing Your Mind: The Law of Regretted Decisions (Yale U. Press 1998). Another kind - the subject of this book - is a mistake caused by an inaccurate, incomplete, or incompetent mental state at the time of an act or decision that results in …

Efficacy Of Nutrition Education Lessons Targeting A Group Of Low-Income Elderly, Gabriela M. Viteri Jan 2006

Efficacy Of Nutrition Education Lessons Targeting A Group Of Low-Income Elderly, Gabriela M. Viteri

This study examined the impact of student engagement on persistence decisions of Black males attending a predominately White public institution in the South. The phenomenon of Black male student persistence at predominately White public institutions is multifaceted and complex. Many Black males enter predominately White campuses lacking the requisite background and experiences deemed necessary and important to student success and persistence. The role of improving persistence is shared by many with much responsibility placed on the students and the institution. Upon entering a predominately White campus there are several institutional factors identified in research that play a critical role in …

Robust Fault-Tolerant Control For Aircraft Systems, Phalguna Kumar Rachinayani Jan 2006

Robust Fault-Tolerant Control For Aircraft Systems, Phalguna Kumar Rachinayani

LSU Master's Theses

The need to design controllers that guarantee both stability and performance upon the occurrence of faults has been an active area of research. To address this problem, in this thesis we present different methodologies to design robust controllers that guarantee both stability and robustness for actuator faults and uncertainties. In the first part of this thesis, we introduce the classical uncertainty formulation using Linear Fractional Transformation (LFT) and describe LFT's special cases-norm bounded and convex polytopic uncertainty descriptions. Practical methods to formulate these uncertainty structures are described. In the same spirit, formulation of faults and their modeling for robust control …

Uv-Liga Micro-Fabrication Of Inertia Type Electrostatic Transducers And Their Application, Seok Jae Jeong Jan 2006

Uv-Liga Micro-Fabrication Of Inertia Type Electrostatic Transducers And Their Application, Seok Jae Jeong

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation discusses the design, working principles, static & dynamic analysis and simulation, mechanics of material, applied MEMS technology, micro-fabrication, and experimental testing of two types of micro-transducers: micro-power relay and micro-accelerometer. Several possible design concepts were proposed, and the advantages and disadvantages of electrostatic working principles were also discussed. Transducers presented in this research used electrostatic force as a driving force in the micro-relay and capacitance as a sensing parameter in the micro-accelerometer. There was an analogy between the micro-relay and the micro-accelerometer in their theoretical approach and fabrication processes. The proposed micro-transducers (micro-relay and micro-accelerometer) were fabricated using …

Winter Diet, Seed Preferences And Foraging Behavior Of Henslow's Sparrows (Ammodramus Henslowii) In Southeastern Louisiana, Jennifer K. Dimiceli Jan 2006

Winter Diet, Seed Preferences And Foraging Behavior Of Henslow's Sparrows (Ammodramus Henslowii) In Southeastern Louisiana, Jennifer K. Dimiceli

LSU Master's Theses

Henslow's Sparrow (Ammodramus henslowii) is a grassland bird whose population is declining throughout its range, mainly due to habitat loss. The Longleaf Pine forest ecosystems in which Henslow's Sparrows spend their winters are reduced to 5% of their former range. The winter ecology of Henslow's Sparrow remains understudied, especially regarding important aspects of diet and foraging behavior. To determine winter diet, I collected fecal samples from Henslow's Sparrows during banding operations in southeastern Louisiana pine savannas from October 2003-March 2004 and October 2004-April 2005. I then analyzed the samples for presence of seeds and arthropod parts, identified them to the …

Performing Citizenship: Tensions In The Creation Of The Citizen Image On Stage And Screen, John William Wright Jan 2006

Performing Citizenship: Tensions In The Creation Of The Citizen Image On Stage And Screen, John William Wright

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

What does it mean to be a “citizen” of the United States? In the simplest of terms, citizenship is a limited position of identity, relegated to a narrow definition of legal and geographical position for an individual. But to be a “citizen” in America means far more than that – it becomes an accepted image of our collective identity which seeks an historical and political supremacy that allows America, and its citizens, to claim ideological status over anyone who is not a part of that nationalistic frame. The citizen has, for us, become a set of understood rights and privileges, …
