Effects Of Retinal Image Degradation On Pre-Attentive Visual Search (Pavs) Efficiency For Flicker, Movment And Orientation Stimuli, Peter Davison, James Loughman Jan 2006

Effects Of Retinal Image Degradation On Pre-Attentive Visual Search (Pavs) Efficiency For Flicker, Movment And Orientation Stimuli, Peter Davison, James Loughman

Articles

Background: Previous research has shown that several clinical conditions cause increased pre-attentive visual search (PAVS) times, implying reduced parallel search capabilities in glaucoma and DLB dementia. The purpose of the research reported here was to examine for the first time the resistance of PAVS to dioptric blur using targets differing from the background in terms of flicker, vertical displacement, and orientation. Resistance would enhance the applicability of PAVS as a screening method for glaucoma and other clinical conditions affecting performance of a substantial area of the retina. Method: Computer generated flicker, orientation and vertical displacement targets were used to assess …

Musical Pattern Design Using Contour Icons, Charlie Cullen, Eugene Coyle Jan 2006

Musical Pattern Design Using Contour Icons, Charlie Cullen, Eugene Coyle

Conference papers

This paper considers the use of Contour Icons in the design and implementation of musical patterns, for the purposes of detection and recognition. Research work had endeavoured to deliver musical patterns that were both distinct and memorable, and to this end a set of basic melodic shapes were introduced using a Sonification application called TrioSon that had been designed for the purpose. Existing work in the field (such as that concerning Earcon design) has considered the mechanisms by which patterns may be made distinctive, but it is argued that separate consideration must be given to the method of making such …

A Comparison Of Ensemble And Case-Base Maintenance Techniques For Handling Concept Drift In Spam Filtering, Sarah Jane Delany, Padraig Cunningham, Alexey Tsymbal Jan 2006

A Comparison Of Ensemble And Case-Base Maintenance Techniques For Handling Concept Drift In Spam Filtering, Sarah Jane Delany, Padraig Cunningham, Alexey Tsymbal

Conference papers

The problem of concept drift has recently received con- siderable attention in machine learning research. One important practical problem where concept drift needs to be addressed is spam filtering. The literature on con- cept drift shows that among the most promising ap- proaches are ensembles and a variety of techniques for ensemble construction has been proposed. In this pa- per we compare the ensemble approach to an alternative lazy learning approach to concept drift whereby a sin- gle case-based classifier for spam filtering keeps itself up-to-date through a case-base maintenance protocol. We present an evaluation that shows that the case-base …

Measured Stark Widths And Shifts Of The Neutral Argon Spectral Lines In 4s–4p And 4s–4p′ Transitions, Vladimir Milosavljevic, Albert R. Ellingboe, Stevan Djenize Jan 2006

Measured Stark Widths And Shifts Of The Neutral Argon Spectral Lines In 4s–4p And 4s–4p′ Transitions, Vladimir Milosavljevic, Albert R. Ellingboe, Stevan Djenize

Articles

We investigate the Stark widths (W) and the shift (d), of the seven neutral argon (Ar I) spectral lines from the 4s–4p and 4s–4p′ transitions. The line shapes are measured in a linear, low-pressure, optically thin pulsed arc discharge at about 16 000 K electron temperature (T) and about 7.0 × 1022 m− 3 electron density (N). The new data separates the electron width (We) and ion width Wi from the total Stark width (Wt), as well the separation of electron total Stark …

Patchwork Law Reform: Your Idea Is Good In Practice, But It Won't Work In Theory, Roderick A. Macdonald, Hoi Kong Jan 2006

Patchwork Law Reform: Your Idea Is Good In Practice, But It Won't Work In Theory, Roderick A. Macdonald, Hoi Kong

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article elaborates a conception of law reform that is pluralistic, interactional, non-formulaic, attentive to implicit normativity and not exclusively instrumental. It argues that law reform practice is always informed by theory. Where theory is inadequate, law reform practice is likely to result in a sub-optimal patchwork. An appropriate theory of law reform will have the following attributes. First, it will have a respect for human agency. This respect is made manifest in law reform on dimensions of form, substance, purpose, authority, mode, regime, sites, and system. Second, an adequate practice of law reform must attend to structural features of …

Plasma Modeling For Ultrashort Laser Ablation Of Dielectrics, Lan Jiang, Hai-Lung Tsai Jan 2006

Plasma Modeling For Ultrashort Laser Ablation Of Dielectrics, Lan Jiang, Hai-Lung Tsai

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In ultrashort pulse (<10 ps) laser ablation of dielectrics, affected materials are first transformed into absorbing plasma with metallic properties and, then, the subsequent laser-plasma interaction causes material removals. For ultrashort-pulse laser ablation of dielectrics, this study proposes a model using the Fokker-Planck equation for electron density distribution, a plasma model for the optical properties of ionized dielectrics, and quantum treatments for electron heating and relaxation time. The free electron density distribution of the plasma within the pulse duration is then used to determine the ablation crater shape. The predicted threshold fluences and ablation depths for barium aluminum borosilicate and fused silica are in agreement with published experimental data. It is found that the significantly varying optical properties in time and space are the key factors determining the ablation crater shape. The effects of fluence and pulse duration are also studied.

Coping Strategies And Personality In Schizophrenia: Can These Two Factors Influence Relapse Rates And Quality Of Life?, Amanda Collins Jan 2006

Coping Strategies And Personality In Schizophrenia: Can These Two Factors Influence Relapse Rates And Quality Of Life?, Amanda Collins

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Many schizophrenia patients never fully recover from their illness, despite being relatively stable. Therefore, research is beginning to go beyond symptom treatment and focus on patients' quality of life. Coping strategies and personality are two factors that may influence quality of life. This study investigated the effects of specific coping strategies and personality on the outcome of schizophrenia as measured by psychiatric symptoms, quality of life, and relapse rates. Results showed that symptomatology was associated with coping strategies that entailed creating a plan of action, while relapse rates were negatively associated with coping strategies that entailed mental and behavioral distraction. …

Adding Species Diversity To A Reconstructed Prairie Using An Incremental Approach, Amy L. Carolan Jan 2006

Adding Species Diversity To A Reconstructed Prairie Using An Incremental Approach, Amy L. Carolan

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Plant species diversity in reconstructed prairies is extremely low when compared to that of prairie remnants. In this experiment I am testing the feasibility of increasing the abundance of native forbs in a reconstructed prairie using an incremental approach. The site chosen for this experiment is one that consists of five species of thirty-year old prairie grasses along with 23 species of native prairie forbs that were overseeded in 1999.

I hypothesized that forb diversity could be increased in an established grassland using an incremental approach, and that mowing would amplify the success of the planting. To test these ideas …

Effects Of Welding Current In Gas Metal Arc Welding, Junling Hu, Tai Lung Tsai Jan 2006

Effects Of Welding Current In Gas Metal Arc Welding, Junling Hu, Tai Lung Tsai

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In gas metal arc welding (GMAW), current is one of the most important factors affecting the mode of metal transfer, weld pool dynamics and subsequently the weld quality. in this paper, the comprehensive model recently developed by the authors was used to study the effects of different current levels on the droplet formation, plasma generation, metal transfer, and weld pool dynamics in GMA welding. Two welding currents were studied, including one low current and one high current. at each current level, the transient temperature and velocity distributions of the arc plasma and the molten metal, and the shapes of the …

The Importance Of Using Time Domain To Analyze The Effect Of Decoupling Capacitor Performance On Printed Circuit Boards, Bruce Archambeault, Jay Diepenbrock, Samuel Connor, Liang Xue, Giuseppe Selli Jan 2006

The Importance Of Using Time Domain To Analyze The Effect Of Decoupling Capacitor Performance On Printed Circuit Boards, Bruce Archambeault, Jay Diepenbrock, Samuel Connor, Liang Xue, Giuseppe Selli

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper demonstrates the importance of using the time domain to properly analyze decoupling capacitor performance on printed circuit boards as well as ASIC packages, etc. Frequency domain analysis is too limited unless the phase information is used along with the magnitude information. the time domain analysis combines the magnitude and phase information to allow a more accurate analysis of decoupling capacitor distance, decoupling capacitor value, and the effects of connection inductance. the impact of connection inductance is extremely important, and it needs to be included in any decoupling capacitor analysis, since this inductance can easily overshadow low plane impedance …

Experimental And Theoretical (E,2e) Ionization Cross Sections For A Hydrogen Target At 75.3 Ev Incident Energy In A Coplanar Asymmetric Geometry, Junfang Gao, Don H. Madison, Jerry Peacher, Andrew James Murray, Martyn J. Hussey Jan 2006

Experimental And Theoretical (E,2e) Ionization Cross Sections For A Hydrogen Target At 75.3 Ev Incident Energy In A Coplanar Asymmetric Geometry, Junfang Gao, Don H. Madison, Jerry Peacher, Andrew James Murray, Martyn J. Hussey

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Very recently it was shown that the molecular three-body distorted wave (M3DW) approach gives good agreement with the shape of the experimental data for electron-impact ionization of H2 in a coplanar symmetric geometry, providing the incident electrons have an energy of 35 eV or greater. One of the weaknesses of these studies was that only the shape of the cross section could be compared to experiment, since there was no absolute or relative normalization of the data. Here we report a joint experimental/theoretical study of electron-impact ionization of H2 in a coplanar asymmetric geometry where the energy of …

Kinematically Complete Experiment On Single Ionization In 75-Kev P+He Collisions, Michael Schulz, Ahmad Hasan, N. V. Maydanyuk, M. Foster, B. Tooke, Don H. Madison Jan 2006

Kinematically Complete Experiment On Single Ionization In 75-Kev P+He Collisions, Michael Schulz, Ahmad Hasan, N. V. Maydanyuk, M. Foster, B. Tooke, Don H. Madison

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have measured and calculated fully differential single-ionization cross sections for the complete three-dimensional space in 75 keV p+He collisions. Several signatures of the projectile-residual-target-ion interaction, some of which are not observable for fast projectiles and for electron impact, are revealed. Some of these features are qualitatively reproduced by our calculations if this interaction is accounted for. However, overall the agreement between theory and experiment is not very good. Thus, our understanding of effects caused by the projectile-residual-target-ion interaction appears to be rather incomplete.

Quantum Phase Transitions Of The Diluted O(3) Rotor Model, Thomas Vojta, Rastko Sknepnek Jan 2006

Quantum Phase Transitions Of The Diluted O(3) Rotor Model, Thomas Vojta, Rastko Sknepnek

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study the phase diagram and the quantum phase transitions of a site-diluted two-dimensional O(3) quantum rotor model by means of large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. This system has two quantum phase transitions: a generic one for small dilutions and a percolation transition across the lattice percolation threshold. We determine the critical behavior for both transitions and for the multicritical point that separates them. In contrast to the exotic scaling scenarios found in other random quantum systems, all these transitions are characterized by finite-disorder fixed points with power-law scaling. We relate our findings to a recent classification of phase transitions with …

Spin Excitations In Fluctuating Stripe Phases Of Doped Cuprate Superconductors, Matthias Vojta, Thomas Vojta, Ribhu K. Kaul Jan 2006

Spin Excitations In Fluctuating Stripe Phases Of Doped Cuprate Superconductors, Matthias Vojta, Thomas Vojta, Ribhu K. Kaul

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Using a phenomenological lattice model of coupled spin and charge modes, we determine the spin susceptibility in the presence of fluctuating stripe charge order. We assume the charge fluctuations to be slow compared to those of the spins, and combine Monte Carlo simulations for the charge order parameter with exact diagonalization of the spin sector. Our calculations unify the spin dynamics of both static and fluctuating stripe phases and support the notion of a universal spin excitation spectrum in doped cuprate superconductors.

A Hierarchical Secure Routing Protocol Against Black Hole Attacks In Sensor Networks, Jian Yin, Sanjay Kumar Madria Jan 2006

A Hierarchical Secure Routing Protocol Against Black Hole Attacks In Sensor Networks, Jian Yin, Sanjay Kumar Madria

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

A black hole attack is a severe attack that can be easily employed against routing in sensor networks. In a black hole attack, a malicious node spuriously announces a short route to the sink node (the destination) to attract additional traffic to the malicious node and then drops them. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical secure routing protocol for detecting and defending against black hole attacks. The proposed protocol uses only symmetric key cryptography to discover a safe route against black hole attacks. The comparison of the proposed protocol with two other existing approaches proves that the proposed scheme …

A Simulation Framework For Real-Time Management And Control Of Inventory Routing Decisions, Shrikant Jarugumilli, Sreeram Ramakrishnan, Scott Erwin Grasman Jan 2006

A Simulation Framework For Real-Time Management And Control Of Inventory Routing Decisions, Shrikant Jarugumilli, Sreeram Ramakrishnan, Scott Erwin Grasman

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We consider a logistics network where a single warehouse distributes a single item to multiple retailers. Retailers in the network participate in a Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) program with the warehouse, where the warehouse is responsible for tracking and replenishing the inventory at various retailer locations. The information update occurs every time a vehicle reaches a location and the decision on the delivery quantity and the next location to visit is made. For a small increase of locations in the network, the state space for the solution increases exponentially, making this problem NP-hard. Thus, we propose a solution methodology where …

Generalized Distance Metric As A Robust Similarity Measure For Mobile Object Trajectories, Garima Pathak, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Spandan Tiwari Jan 2006

Generalized Distance Metric As A Robust Similarity Measure For Mobile Object Trajectories, Garima Pathak, Sanjay Kumar Madria, Spandan Tiwari

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we propose a novel generalized distance metric based on a model that incorporates the time axis explicitly. The proposed metric is based fundamentally on the Mahalanobis distance metric, which eliminates the correlation and scaling errors in similarity searches on trajectory databases. We propose the incorporation of a weight matrix in the proposed distance metric, which allows for easy manipulation of the degree of significance of the different spatial and or temporal dimensions.

Secrout: A Secure Routing Protocol For Sensor Networks, Jian Yin, Sanjay Kumar Madria Jan 2006

Secrout: A Secure Routing Protocol For Sensor Networks, Jian Yin, Sanjay Kumar Madria

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this paper, we present a secure routing protocol for sensor networks (SecRout) to safeguard sensor networks under different types of attacks. The SecRout protocol uses the symmetric cryptography to secure messages, and uses a small cache in sensor nodes to record the partial routing path (previous and next nodes) to the destination. It guarantees that the destination will be able to identify and discard the tampered messages and ensure that the messages received are not tampered. Comparing the performance with non-secure routing protocol AODV (ad hoc on demand distance vector routing), the SecRout protocol only has a small byte …

Modeling Of Dielectric Mixtures Containing Conducting Inclusions With Statistically Distributed Aspect Ratio, Marina Koledintseva, Sandeep K. R. Chandra, Richard E. Dubroff, Robert W. Schwartz Jan 2006

Modeling Of Dielectric Mixtures Containing Conducting Inclusions With Statistically Distributed Aspect Ratio, Marina Koledintseva, Sandeep K. R. Chandra, Richard E. Dubroff, Robert W. Schwartz

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An analytical model of composites made of a dielectric base and randomly oriented metal inclusions in the form of nanorods is presented. This model is based on the generalized Maxwell Garnett (MG) mixing rule. In this model, the nanorod particles are modeled as prolate spheroids with a statistically normal distribution of their aspect ratios. It is shown that parameters of the distribution laws affect the frequency characteristics of the composites both at microwave and optical frequencies. The results of computations are represented.

Predicting Load Harmonics In Three Phase Systems Using Neural Networks, Joy Mazumdar, Frank C. Lambert, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley Jan 2006

Predicting Load Harmonics In Three Phase Systems Using Neural Networks, Joy Mazumdar, Frank C. Lambert, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes a artificial neural network (ANN) based method for the problem of measuring the actual harmonic current injected into a power system network by three phase nonlinear loads without disconnecting any loads from the network. The ANN directly estimates or identifies the nonlinear admittance (or impedance) of the load by using the measured values of voltage and current waveforms. The output of this ANN is a waveform of the current that the load would have injected into the network if the load had been supplied from a sinusoidal voltage source and is therefore a direct measure of load …

Recurrent Neural Network Based Predictions Of Elephant Migration In A South African Game Reserve, Parviz Palangpour, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Kevin Duffy Jan 2006

Recurrent Neural Network Based Predictions Of Elephant Migration In A South African Game Reserve, Parviz Palangpour, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Kevin Duffy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A large portion of South Africa''s elephant population can be found on small wildlife reserves. When confined to enclosed reserves the elephant densities are much higher than observed in the wild. The large nutritional demands and destructive foraging behavior of elephants threaten rare species of vegetation. If conservation management is to protect threatened species of vegetation, knowing how long elephants will stay in one area of the reserve as well as which area they will move to next is essential. The goal of this study is to train a recurrent neural network (RNN) to continuously predict an elephant herd''s next …

Simulation Model For Assessing Transient Performance Of Capacitive Voltage Transformers, I. Sule, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, U. O. Aliyu Jan 2006

Simulation Model For Assessing Transient Performance Of Capacitive Voltage Transformers, I. Sule, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, U. O. Aliyu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In determining the correct operation of relays of a protection scheme, proper representation of instrument transformers and their behavior in conditions where there can be transient is very critical. This paper presents a simulation model for assessing the transient performance of capacitive voltage transformers (CVTs). In order to test the validity of the developed model, four CVT operational conditions are considered using field data collected from one of the Nigerian electric utility 330/132/33 kV substations. The model simulation results revealed various configuration performance responses that could affect relay protection schemes to different degrees. As expected, the CVT responses showed that …

A Fault-Tolerant P-Q Decoupled Control Scheme For Static Synchronous Series Compensator, Wei Qiao, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley Jan 2006

A Fault-Tolerant P-Q Decoupled Control Scheme For Static Synchronous Series Compensator, Wei Qiao, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Control of nonlinear devices in power systems relies on the availability and the quality of sensor measurements. Measurements can be corrupted or interrupted due to sensor failure, broken or bad connections, bad communication, or malfunction of some hardware or software (referred to as missing sensor measurements in this paper). This paper proposes a fault-tolerant control scheme (FTCS) for a static synchronous series compensator (SSSC). This FTCS consists of a sensor evaluation and (missing sensor) restoration scheme (SERS) cascaded with a P-Q decoupled control scheme (PQDC). It is able to provide effective control to the SSSC when single or multiple crucial …
