Minimum Flow Time Schedule Genetic Algorithm For Mass Customization Manufacturing Using Minicells, Phanindra Kumar Chadalavada Jan 2006

Minimum Flow Time Schedule Genetic Algorithm For Mass Customization Manufacturing Using Minicells, Phanindra Kumar Chadalavada

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Minicells are small manufacturing cells dedicated to an option family and organized in a multi-stage configuration for mass customization manufacturing. Product variants, depending on the customization requirements of each customer, are routed through the minicells as necessary. For successful mass customization, customized products must be manufactured at low cost and with short turn around time. Effective scheduling of jobs to be processed in minicells is essential to quickly deliver customized products. In this research, a genetic algorithm based approach is developed to schedule jobs in a minicell configuration by considering it as a multi-stage flow shop. A new crossover strategy …

Characterization And Measurement Of Tension-Induced Longitudinal Wrinkles In Gossamer Membranes Using Photogrammetry, Sreeram Mangalampalli Jan 2006

Characterization And Measurement Of Tension-Induced Longitudinal Wrinkles In Gossamer Membranes Using Photogrammetry, Sreeram Mangalampalli

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Gossamer membranes are large, ultra light weight, highly flexible thin films. They have been proposed for use as elements in systems such as solar sails and optical apertures, whose large areas require a low-mass material that can be launched in a compact package and then deployed to operational configuration upon reaching orbit. Many of the proposed applications require that the film possess a flat, wrinkle-free surface. Surface wrinkle configuration is determined, in part, by the method used to support the film. One configuration that has not been studied in detail involves the formation of vertical wrinkles oriented along the direction …

Chemistry At The Cu-Fluoropolymer Interface: Relevance To Adhesion, Daliana Gava Abreu Jan 2006

Chemistry At The Cu-Fluoropolymer Interface: Relevance To Adhesion, Daliana Gava Abreu

Theses

The adhesion of sputtered Cu to fluoropolymer surfaces modified by vacuum UV photo-oxidation increased with treatment time for Teflon® PTFE while for Teflon® FEP and PFA there was cohesive failure within FEP and PFA and not at the Cu-fluoropolymer interface. Ar ion etching of the surfaces after cohesive failure showed that the depth of FEP and PFA left on the Cu was ca. 3-10 nm. The chemistry at the interface included the presence of copper fluorides. Control experiments involving Ar ion etching of untreated fluoropolymers showed no evidence for fluoride ions. Thin films of Cu were thermally evaporated and sputter …

Upgrade, Aharon Charnov Jan 2006

Upgrade, Aharon Charnov

Theses

Description of the creation of a computer-animated film, "Upgrade," a project whose goal was to create a visually acceptable story that was enjoyable and coherent, without the benefit of substantive collaborators. The film depicts a young man's relationship with his new computer, as the (anthropomorphized) operating system loses her initial attractiveness and becomes bloated, slow, jealous and vengeful. Includes thesis proposal, revised script, original story boards, color stills, and code for generating facial expressions.

Western Caribbean Sea Surface Temperatures During The Late Quaternary, Matthew W. Schmidt, Maryline J. Vautravers, Howard J. Spero

OES Faculty Publications

[1] Mg/Ca ratios in the planktonic foraminifera Globigerinoides ruber from Colombian Basin core ODP 999A suggest that Caribbean sea surface temperatures ( SSTs) were from 2.1 to 2.7°C colder than the present during the last three glacial maximums. In comparison, faunal derived SSTs ( SIMMAX method) show that August SSTs in the Caribbean varied < 2° over the past 360 kyr, whereas February SSTs varied between 21.0°C and 26.5°C. Changes in the Mg/Ca-SST record contain a strong 23 kyr periodicity, suggesting the Mg/Ca-SST record reflects a warm season weighted SST average rather than an annual mean SST. Combining several dissolution indices, we identify brief periods of decreased carbonate preservation in our record and show that MIS 11 stands out as the most intensive dissolution cycle in the Caribbean over the last 460 kyr. Comparison of Caribbean SST change with a similar estimate of tropical SST variability in the western Pacific over the past 360 kyr reveals shifts in the east-west tropical SST gradient that are coeval with glacial-interglacial climate change and consistent both with a southward migration of the glacial ITCZ and with a glacial El Niño-like mode of tropical circulation.

Horn Formula Minimization, Tom Chang Jan 2006

Horn Formula Minimization, Tom Chang

Theses

Horn formulas make up an important subclass of Boolean formulas that exhibits interesting and useful computational properties. They have been widely studied due to the fact that the satisfiability problem for Horn formulas is solvable in linear time. Also resulting from this, Horn formulas play an important role in the field of artificial intelligence. The minimization problem of Horn formulas is to reduce the size of a given Horn formula to find a shortest equivalent representation. Many knowledge bases in propositional expert systems are represented as Horn formulas. Therefore the minimization of Horn formulas can be used to reduce the …

Jacil: A Cli To Jvm Compiler, Almann Goo Jan 2006

Jacil: A Cli To Jvm Compiler, Almann Goo

Theses

Both the .NET Framework via the Common Language Infrastructure (CLI) and the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) provide a managed, virtual execution environment for running high-level virtual machine code. As these two platforms become ubiquitous, it is of pragmatic and academic interest to have the capability of running CLI code on the JVM and vice versa. This project developed JaCIL (pronounced "jackal"), a CLI assembly to JVM class file bytecode compiler framework. JaCIL also provides a user program for running CLI-to-JVM translations and a runtime library to support the translated code.

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This is a study of elementary teachers' identity development, personal and professional knowledge, and love of teaching. The participants of this inquiry are six teachers who teach at Hesse Elementary School in Savannah, Georgia. Diane, Julie, Mary, Susan, Uticia, and Yolanda provide viable insights about their journey as teachers. Their stories offer narrative truisms concerning their identity evolution and the transformation of their professional personality as they live their lives in the classroom. William Ayres' (1989, 2001, 2004, 2004) work on teacher identity and teacher knowledge development provides a framework for this study. Robert Fried's (2001) devotion to passion for …

Inquiry Into The Writing Pedagogy For Middle School Language Arts, William Love Moore Jan 2006

Inquiry Into The Writing Pedagogy For Middle School Language Arts, William Love Moore

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This is a narrative inquiry into writing pedagogies of middle school language arts teachers and an administrator. Six teacher participants were interviewed and observed, their lesson plans were analyzed, and their instructional practices and writing philosophies were examined. Overarching research questions were (1) What role does writing pedagogy play in a language arts program? (2) What strategies were used to teach writing? and (3) What types of assessments were utilized? The theoretical framework of my research was based on Dewey's (1897) philosophy of education with roots in hermeneutic phenomenology by van Manen (1990). Methods of inquiry were based on narrative …

Landscapes Of Imagination: A Critical Analysis Of Art Textbooks, Lynda C. Kerr Jan 2006

Landscapes Of Imagination: A Critical Analysis Of Art Textbooks, Lynda C. Kerr

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Author's abstract: This qualitative study examined imagination in secondary art textbooks, both historically and in the current educational climate. An arts-based inquiry, as described by Barone & Eisner (Jaeger, 1988), investigated how imagination is manifested in some art books, how the standards movement has tended to limit imagination in art textbooks, and how art textbooks could expand students' imaginations. Using a framework based on the theories of Dewey (1934/1980), Greene (2001), and Eisner (2002), four art textbooks were analyzed for their qualities which expand students' imaginations. The study described a design for an imaginative art textbook. Analysis focused on the …

Democracy And Oversight, Riccardo Pelizzo, Rick Stapenhurst Jan 2006

Democracy And Oversight, Riccardo Pelizzo, Rick Stapenhurst

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In the course of the past decade, political science has started paying increasing attention to the study of legislative oversight, which had been previously been described as an important but inadequately researched area of legislative activity (Lees, 1977). Lees’ comment is particularly true with regard to comparative analyses of oversight tools and practices. Some studies have recently discussed the instruments of legislative oversight (Maffio, 2002), other studies have instead investigated how legislative oversight relates to both political variables (Pennings, 2000; Damgaard, 2000; Pelizzo and Stapenhurst, 2004a) and socio-economic conditions (Pelizzo and Stapenhurst, 2004b). In spite of this renewed interest in …

A Code Of Conduct For Indonesia: Problems And Perspectives, Riccardo Pelizzo, Bernice Ang Jan 2006

A Code Of Conduct For Indonesia: Problems And Perspectives, Riccardo Pelizzo, Bernice Ang

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The purpose of the present paper is fairly straightforward. We want to show that institutional reforms, such as the adoption of a conduct code, represent a necessary albeit insufficient condition to curb corruption and promote good governance. As several scholars have pointed out the success of institutional reform in general and the success of codes of conduct in particular depends, among other things, on ideational conditions. With regard to codes of conduct, parliamentary ethics experts believe in fact that the success of a code of conduct depends on whether the individuals who are supposed to be regulated by the disposition …

Culture And Counterfactuals: On The Importance Of Life Domains, Jing Chen, Chi-Yue Chiu, Neal J. Roese, Kim-Pong Tam, Ivy Yee-Man Lau Jan 2006

Culture And Counterfactuals: On The Importance Of Life Domains, Jing Chen, Chi-Yue Chiu, Neal J. Roese, Kim-Pong Tam, Ivy Yee-Man Lau

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Past research, with its emphasis on affective regulatory processes, has failed to find cross-cultural differences in counterfactual thoughts. In the current study, the authors examine the tendency to generate additive counterfactuals (those that focus on the addition of new aspects that were not in fact present) and subtractive counterfactuals (those that focus on subtraction of factual aspects) among Mainland Chinese and European American university students in five life domains: schoolwork, romantic relationships, family relationships, friendships, and life in general. As in previous studies, the authors find an overall main effect, in which additive counterfactuals predominate over subtractive counterfactuals within both …

Rights Of Culture, Rights Of Conscience, Chandran Kukathas Jan 2006

Rights Of Culture, Rights Of Conscience, Chandran Kukathas

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In this contribution I take up a particularly troubling issue in the theory of human rights. It is the issue of intervention to defend or uphold — or re-assert and re-establish — human rights. The issue is a troubling one because intervention in the affairs of others is always something we should be wary of, not least because history is full of unhappy episodes of intervention, from the Spanish in the Americas to the Chinese in Tibet. Indeed, so difficult and complex are the issues raised that one might be tempted in a discussion of human rights simply to separate …

Review Of Scott Cook, Ed., Hiding The World In The World: Uneven Discourses On The Zhuangzi, Alan Kam Leung Chan

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

The ten essays collected in this volume offer different perspectives on key issues in the Zhuangzi and should be warmly welcomed as a helpful addition to the field. The authors disagree on many things about the Zhuangzi; but there is certainly nothing "uneven" about the quality of their "discourses," which is uniformly high.

Accounting Restatements: Are They Always Bad News For Investors?, Dan Segal, Jeffrey L. Callen, Joshua Livnat Jan 2006

Accounting Restatements: Are They Always Bad News For Investors?, Dan Segal, Jeffrey L. Callen, Joshua Livnat

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

This study investigates a large sample of financial statement restatements over the period 1986-2001, and compares restatements caused by changes in accounting principles to those caused by errors. Typically, investors perceive restatements as negative signals due to three potential reasons: (a) the restatement indicates problems with the accounting system that may be manifestations of broader operational (and managerial) problems, (b) the restatement causes downward revisions in future cash flows expectations, and (c) the restatement indicates managerial attempts to cover up income decline through “cooking the books.” We provide evidence that market reactions to restatements due to errors are generally negative. …

Bio-Bibliography: William Clark Gordon (1865-1936), Michael R. Hill

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

William Clark Gordon was a clergyman and an early theorist of the relationships between literature and sociology. He earned a Ph.D. in the University of Chicago Divinity School in 1899 where he majored — within the School’s own Department of Sociology — in social institutions. As such, he completed his doctorate during the first full decade of Chicago’s pioneering sociological project — a fact noted but misattributed by Robert E. L. Faris (1967) to work in the University’s Department of Sociology in the Graduate School of Arts and Literature (Hill 2005). As a practicing clergyman, Gordon’s professional attentions focused on …
