High Order Shock Capturing Schemes For Hyperbolic Conservation Laws And The Application In Open Channel Flows, Chunfang Chen

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Many applications in engineering practice can be described by thehyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs). Numerical modeling of this typeof equations often involves large gradients or shocks, which makes it achallenging task for conventional numerical methods to accurately simulate suchsystems. Thus developing accurate and efficient shock capturing numericalschemes becomes important for the study of hyperbolic equations. In this dissertation, a detailed study of the numerical methods for linearand nonlinear unsteady hyperbolic equations was carried out. A new finitedifference shock capturing scheme of finite volume style was developed. Thisscheme is based on the high order Pad?? type compact central finite differencemethod with the …

Influence Of Moisture Regime And Tree Species On Nitrogen Cycling And Decomposition Dynamics In Deciduous Forests Of Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky, Usa, Eric Fabio

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The study of biogeochemical cycles and their role in ecosystem function has helped to highlight the impacts of human activities on natural processes. However, our understanding of the effects of nitrogen (N) deposition on forested ecosystems remains limited due to the variable controls on N cycling. Soils, microclimate, and vegetation can influence rates and processes of N cycling, singly or in concert at multiple scales. Understanding how these factors influence N cycling across the landscape will help to elucidate the impacts of N deposition. The objectives of this study were to characterize variation in soils, microclimate and vegetation characteristics, and …

Habitat Selection Of The Cerulean Warbler In Eastern Kentucky, Patricia J. Hartman Jan 2006

Habitat Selection Of The Cerulean Warbler In Eastern Kentucky, Patricia J. Hartman

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Successful forest management requires an understanding of the habitat requirements of individual species at multiple spatial scales. The cerulean warbler (Dendroica cerulea) is a neotropical migratory songbird that has recently gained widespread attention as a species of conservation and management concern. It breeds in mature, deciduous forests of eastern North America and has experienced precipitous range-wide declines over the last 40 years. Although Kentucky likely supports one of the largest breeding populations of the species, no information exists on cerulean warbler habitat selection within the state. The overall purpose of this study was to identify important habitat features associated with …

Fault-Tolerant Distributed Channel Allocation Algorithms For Cellular Networks, Jianchang Yang Jan 2006

Fault-Tolerant Distributed Channel Allocation Algorithms For Cellular Networks, Jianchang Yang

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

In cellular networks, channels should be allocated efficiently to support communication betweenmobile hosts. In addition, in cellular networks, base stations may fail. Therefore, designing a faulttolerantchannel allocation algorithm is important. That is, the algorithm should tolerate failuresof base stations. Many existing algorithms are neither fault-tolerant nor efficient in allocatingchannels. We propose channel allocation algorithms which are both fault-tolerant and efficient. In theproposed algorithms, to borrow a channel, a base station (or a cell) does not need to get channelusage information from all its interference neighbors. This makes the algorithms fault-tolerant,i.e., the algorithms can tolerate base station failures, and perform well in …

Petrofabric And Geochemical Analysis Of The Great Smoky -- Snowbird Group Contact, Western Blue Ridge, North Carolina And Tennessee, Kristopher M. Clemons

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Detailed structural and petrographic analysis of the Greenbrier Fault (GBF) reveal different fold and fabric styles and generations preserved in the Great Smoky Group (GSG) hanging wall and Snowbird Group (SG) footwall. Four planar fabrics (S0, S1, S2, and S3) are completely overprinted within meters of the contact by shear zone-related fabrics. Bedding (S0) is defined by planar laminations in the SG siltstones. S1 is weak, not associated with folding of S0, and defined locally by sub-parallel alignment of biotite. S2 (slaty cleavage) is deflected into a disjunctive planar (in GSG) or continuous planar (in SG) S3 foliation characterized by …

Optimal Phase Measuring Profilometry Techniques For Static And Dynamic 3d Data Acquisition, Veeraganesh Yalla Jan 2006

Optimal Phase Measuring Profilometry Techniques For Static And Dynamic 3d Data Acquisition, Veeraganesh Yalla

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Phase measuring Profilometry (PMP) is an important technique used in 3D data acquisition. Many variations of the PMP technique exist in the research world. The technique involves projecting phase shifted versions of sinusoidal patterns with known frequency. The 3D information is obtained from the amount of phase deviation that the target object introduces in the captured patterns. Using patterns based on single frequency result in projecting a large number of patterns necessary to achieve minimal reconstruction errors. By using more than one frequency, that is multi-frequency, the error is reduced with the same number of total patterns projected as in …

Citizens On Patrol: Community Policing And The Territorialization Of Public Space In Seattle, Washington, Marcia Rae England Jan 2006

Citizens On Patrol: Community Policing And The Territorialization Of Public Space In Seattle, Washington, Marcia Rae England

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation shows how organizations, including local government and police, and residents within Seattle, Washingtons East Precinct define and police the contours of community, neighborhoods and public space. Under the rubric of public safety, these players create territorial geographies that seek to include only those who fit the narrowly conceived idea of a neighbor. Territoriality is exercised against the social Other in an attempt to build a cohesive community while at the same time excluding those who are seen as different or as non-conformant to acceptable behaviors in the neighborhood. This research provides a framework through which to examine how …

Effects Of Forest And Grass Vegetation On Fluviokarst Hillslope Hydrology, Bowman's Bend, Kentucky, Linda Leann Martin Jan 2006

Effects Of Forest And Grass Vegetation On Fluviokarst Hillslope Hydrology, Bowman's Bend, Kentucky, Linda Leann Martin

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Subsurface solutional pathways make limestone terrains sensitive to changes in soil properties that regulate flows to the epikarst. This study examines biogeomorphic factors responsible for changed water movements and erosion in fluviokarst slopes deforested 200 years ago along the Kentucky River, Kentucky. In this project, infiltration and water content data from forest and fescue grass soil profiles were analyzed within a detailed overview of system factors regulating hillslope hydrology. Results show that grass has growth and rooting characteristics that tend to create a larger volume of lateral water movement in upper soil layers than occurs under forests. This sets up …

The Smart Bookshelf, Danny Sylvester Crasto Jan 2006

The Smart Bookshelf, Danny Sylvester Crasto

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The smart bookshelf serves as a test-bed to study environments that are intelligently augmented by projector-camera devices. The system utilizes a camera pair and a projector coupled with an RFID reader to monitor and maintain the state of a real world library shelf. Using a simple calibration scheme, the homography induced by the world plane in which book spines approximately lie is estimated. As books are added to the shelf, a foreground detection algorithm which takes into account the projected information yields new pixels in each view that are then verified using a planar parallax constraint across both cameras to …

Detection Of Malingered Mental Retardation, Lili Odom Graue Jan 2006

Detection Of Malingered Mental Retardation, Lili Odom Graue

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The 2002 Supreme Court decision (Atkins vs. Virginia, 536 U. S. 304), prohibiting the execution of mentally retarded persons, may potentially increase malingering of mental retardation (MR). There is limited research addressing the detection of feigned MR. The present study compared results from tests of intelligence, adaptive functioning, legal/courtroom knowledge, and psychiatric and neurocognitive feigning to determine how effectively these instruments discriminate between MR participants and community volunteers asked to either approach the test honestly (CVH group) or feign, or malinger, MR (CVM group). CVMs suppressed their IQ scores sufficiently to appear MR. CVMs overestimated deficits on individuals with genuine …

Does Optimism Explain How Religiousness Affects Alcohol Use Among College Students?, Benjamin Lee Collier Jan 2006

Does Optimism Explain How Religiousness Affects Alcohol Use Among College Students?, Benjamin Lee Collier

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Alcohol use, because of its many negative consequences, is the number one health problem facing college students. Because of this, researchers have looked for factors associated with reduced drinking. Religiousness is one such factor. Religiousness is a complex, multidimensional construct, and while it tends to be negatively associated with alcohol use, research progress has been slow due to the tendency of researchers to poorly operationalize this construct and to design studies that fail to go beyond the bivariate relationship of religiousness and alcohol use. In order to address these shortcomings, this study will assess two dimensions of religiousness, religious commitment/motivation …

The Lazarus Project. Ii. Spacelike Extraction With The Quasi-Kinnersley Tetrad, Manuela Campanelli, Bernard Kelly, Carlos O. Lousto

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

The Lazarus project was designed to make the most of limited 3D binary black-hole simulations, through the identification of perturbations at late times, and subsequent evolution of the Weyl scalar Ψ4 via the Teukolsky formulation. Here we report on new developments, employing the concept of the “quasi-Kinnersley” (transverse) frame, valid in the full nonlinear regime, to analyze late-time numerical space-times that should differ only slightly from Kerr. This allows us to extract the essential information about the background Kerr solution, and through this, to identify the radiation present. We explicitly test this procedure with full-numerical evolutions of Bowen-York data for …

Optimizing Consumer Credit Markets And Bankruptcy Policy, Ronald J. Mann Jan 2006

Optimizing Consumer Credit Markets And Bankruptcy Policy, Ronald J. Mann

Faculty Scholarship

This Article explores the relationship between consumer credit markets and bankruptcy policy. In general, I argue that the causative relationships running between borrowing and bankruptcy compel a new strategy for policing the conduct of lenders and borrowers in modern consumer credit markets. The strategy must be sensitive to the role of the credit card in lending markets and must recognize that both issuers and cardholders are well placed to respond to the increased levels of spending and indebtedness. In the latter parts of the Article, I recommend mandatory minimum payment requirements, a tax on distressed credit card debt, and the …

Models Of Aviation Technical Communication With Augmented Reality, Anthony Majoros, Dennis Vincenzi, Sathya Gangadharan, Paul Jackson Jan 2006

Models Of Aviation Technical Communication With Augmented Reality, Anthony Majoros, Dennis Vincenzi, Sathya Gangadharan, Paul Jackson

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

A fundamental characteristic of augmented reality (AR) is the overlay of computer graphics (e.g., installation instructions) on views of world objects (e.g., a section of an aircraft wing) and registration of those graphics to features in the world scene. In AR, the mechanisms of information retrieval rely on detection of features of real-world objects, and communication is by way of virtual content in a real world scene; causing information to become a function of the composite scene, where real and virtual elements are interdependent. Various models of technical media communication are made possible by these characteristics and are discussed in …

High-Dynamic-Range Photography: Image Display And Perception, Jiangtao Kuang Jan 2006

High-Dynamic-Range Photography: Image Display And Perception, Jiangtao Kuang

Theses

Current desktop and hard copy display media are capable of only a limited dynamic range in luminance. Hence, high dynamic range (HDR) images require tone-mapping operators for rendering on these media to adequately reproduce their perceptual qualities. Furthermore, the development of these operators requires a methodology for their evaluation in terms of perceptual attributes. To this end, a series of psychophysical experiments was conducted to evaluate a wide-variety of previously published, HDR tone-mapping operators. The evaluations were conducted in terms of rendering accuracy and image preference, and from them, a general methodology for evaluating tonemapping operators was proposed. A next …

Streaming Video Performance And Enhancements In Resource-Constrained Wireless Networks, Justin James Madigan Jan 2006

Streaming Video Performance And Enhancements In Resource-Constrained Wireless Networks, Justin James Madigan

Theses

Streaming video is an increasingly popular application in wireless networks. The concept of a live streaming video yields several enticing possibilities: real-time video conferencing, television broadcasting, pay-per-view movie streaming, and more. These ideas have already been explored via the internet and have met with mixed success, largely due to the shortcomings of the underlying network. Taking streaming video to wireless networks, then, poses several significant challenges. Wireless networks are inherently more susceptible to failures and data corruption due to their unstable communications medium. This volatility suggests serious drawbacks for any implementation of streaming video. Video frame errors, jitter, and even …
