"Our Blood Would Rise Up & Drive Them Away:" Slaveholding Women Of South Carolina In The Civil War, Nicole M. Lenart Jan 2006

"Our Blood Would Rise Up & Drive Them Away:" Slaveholding Women Of South Carolina In The Civil War, Nicole M. Lenart

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

Southern slaveholding women during the Civil War are usually portrayed as either Eve or the Virgin Mary. They are either depicted as staunch patriotic wives and mothers who out of love suffered and sacrificed most of their worldly goods for the Cause, or as weak-willed creatures who gave up on the war, asked their men to come home, and concerned themselves with getting pretty dresses from the blockade runners and dancing at elaborate balls and bazaars. This latter view, which seems cut so superficially from Gone With the Wind, is nevertheless one that is common in Civil War scholarship …

Role Stressors, Service Worker Job Resourcefulness, And Job Outcomes: An Empirical Analysis, Eric G. Harris, Andrew B. Artis, Jack H. Walters, Jane W. Licata Jan 2006

Role Stressors, Service Worker Job Resourcefulness, And Job Outcomes: An Empirical Analysis, Eric G. Harris, Andrew B. Artis, Jack H. Walters, Jane W. Licata

Research & Publications

This article expands upon previous research on the job resourcefulness construct by examining the influence of role stressors (i.e., role ambiguity and conflict) on job resourcefulness and by examining the influence of job resourcefulness on job satisfaction and intentions to leave the firm. Given the current focus of businesses to ‘‘do more with less’’, the research highlights the importance of role stressors in improving overall organizational efficiency and work outcomes. Drawing from previous work in both hierarchical personality and fit theories, the authors propose that situational determinants play an important role in overall job resourcefulness. An empirical study which utilized …

A Gaming Laboratory To Study Distributed Collaboration Processes., Halbana Tarmizi, Lucas Steinhauser, Matt Payne, Cherie Noteboom, Chi Zhang

Research & Publications

Current events present many examples of situations where a fast and coordinated response is required from many and diverse organizations and stakeholders. Technology-mediated communication and collaboration may be the only option for getting things done in situations like these. There is a real need for research on the kinds of environments and processes that best support fast response on urgent tasks for virtual teams. The paper presents the development and initial test of a gaming laboratory to study such processes. The laboratory is adaptable to different kinds of situations. We discuss the design principles and implementation of the laboratory environment, …

Environmental Management Information Systems (Emis) For Sustainable Development: A Conceptual Overview, Omar F. El-Gayar, Brian D. Fritz Jan 2006

Environmental Management Information Systems (Emis) For Sustainable Development: A Conceptual Overview, Omar F. El-Gayar, Brian D. Fritz

Research & Publications

Environmental management information systems (EMIS) is defined as 'organizational-technical systems for systematically obtaining, processing, and making available relevant environmental information available in companies'. Such systems evolved out of a growing need to manage environmental information in response to internal and external pressures such as regulations, consumers, stockholders, and changes in the business environments. While over the past decade EMIS have proliferated in the corporate landscape, these systems have received little attention within the information systems research community as whole. The objective of this paper is to serve as a tutorial providing a conceptual overview of EMIS, highlighting organizational and technical …

Low-Power Flip-Flop Using Internal Clock Gating And Adaptive Body Bias, Jorge Alberto Galvis Jan 2006

Low-Power Flip-Flop Using Internal Clock Gating And Adaptive Body Bias, Jorge Alberto Galvis

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents a new systematic approach to flip-flop design using Internal Clock Gating, (ICG), and Adaptive Body-Bias, (ABB), in order to reduce power consumption. The process requires careful transistor resizing in order to maintain signal integrity and the functionality of the flip-flop at the target frequency.A novel flip-flop architecture, based on the Transmission Gate Flip-Flop, (TGFF), which incorporated ICG and ABB techniques, was designed. This architecture was simulated intensively in order to determine under what conditions its use is appropriate. In addition, it was necessary to establish a methodology for creating a standard testbench and environment setup for the …

Ventricle Slice Detection In Mr Images Using Hough Transform And Object Matching Techniques, Chintan Thakkar Jan 2006

Ventricle Slice Detection In Mr Images Using Hough Transform And Object Matching Techniques, Chintan Thakkar

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The determination of the center slice, defined as a slice through the lateral ventricles in the axial plane in a volume of MR images is important to the segmentation of the image into its anatomical parts. The center or ventricle slice in a set of MR images is recognized by the shape of the ventricles in the axial plane as depicted by the cerebro-spinal fluids in the image. Currently, no technique exists to detect this slice and the purpose of this thesis is to find a slice through the lateral ventricles in the axial plane from a volume of MRI …

Freedom Fighters, Freedom Haters, Martyrs, And Evildoers: The Social Construction Of Suicide Terrorism, Cã©Cile Valã©Rie Van De Voorde Jan 2006

Freedom Fighters, Freedom Haters, Martyrs, And Evildoers: The Social Construction Of Suicide Terrorism, Cã©Cile Valã©Rie Van De Voorde

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Suicide terrorism is characterized by the willingness of physically and psychologically war-trained individuals to die while destroying or attempting to annihilate enemy targets in furtherance of certain political or social objectives. Rooted in the historical, social, and psychological dimensions of international terrorism, suicide terrorism is neither a unique nor a new phenomenon. Its recent resurgence and the extensive media coverage it has received account for the misleading uniqueness of this violent, complex, and adaptive form of terrorism. This qualitative study examines the definitional and rhetorical processes by which suicide terrorism is socially constructed. Using a social constructionist theoretical framework coupled …

A Quantitative Method For Iso 17799 Gap Analysis, Bilge Karabacak, Ibrahim Sogukpinar

All Faculty and Staff Scholarship

ISO/IEC 17799:2005 is one of the leading standards of information security. It is the code of practice including 133 controls in 11 different domains. There are a number of tools and software that are used by organizations to check whether they comply with this standard. The task of checking compliance helps organizations to determine their conformity to the controls listed in the standard and deliver useful outputs to the certification process. In this paper, a quantitative survey method is proposed for evaluating ISO 17799 compliance. Our case study has shown that the survey method gives accurate compliance results in a …

A Tragedy Of The Common: The Common Interest Rule, Its Common Misuses, And An Uncommon Solution, Nicole Garsombke Jan 2006

A Tragedy Of The Common: The Common Interest Rule, Its Common Misuses, And An Uncommon Solution, Nicole Garsombke

Georgia Law Review

Almost every state allows some form of the common interest rule, which protects communications and documents exchanged between attorney, client, and certain third parties from waiver of the attorney-client privilege. This Note is a critique of two important exceptions to privilege waiver, the common interest and coclient rules, and discusses the rationales and justifications for the exceptions, scenarios to which the exceptions apply, and other confusing elements of courts' applications and interpretations. An examination of the common interest and coclient rules in Georgia is provided to give a particular case study of the development and use of these two exceptions. Finally, …

Time To Look Abroad? The Legal Regulation Of Emergency Powers, William E. Scheuerman Jan 2006

Time To Look Abroad? The Legal Regulation Of Emergency Powers, William E. Scheuerman

Georgia Law Review

The starting point for Professor Levinson's thought-provoking ruminations on emergency power and constitutionalism is his deep skepticism about the Bush Administration's legal response to 9/11.1 In the context of the "war on terror," Professor Levinson accurately recounts, the Administration has claimed the right to override both longstanding domestic and international legal commitments.2 Even strict prohibitions on torture, it seems, are not exempt from the President's constitutionally based prerogative as "Commander in Chief to keep the nation out of harm's way, and only he apparently possesses the rightful authority to determine the fate of accused terrorists. Although many constitutional lawyers will …

Giving Intellectual Property, Xuan-Thao Nguyen, Jeffrey A. Maine Jan 2006

Giving Intellectual Property, Xuan-Thao Nguyen, Jeffrey A. Maine

Articles

The interdisciplinarity of intellectual property and taxation poses many challenges to the disparate existing norms in each respective field of law. This Article identifies and critiques the current tax regime governing the giving of intellectual property as a manifestation of the failure to understand the principles and policies underlying intellectual property and the firm. It proposes an economic, incentives-based system that would encourage firms to extricate part of their repository of residual rights by surrendering their monopolistic ownership of intellectual property for the benefit of charitable organizations and, in turn, the development and growth of society.
