A Mixed-Methods And Multi-Level Investigation Of The Effects Of A Crew Chief Intervention On Job Attitudes, Occupational Stress, And Organizational Commitment, Michael Charles Leo Jan 2006

A Mixed-Methods And Multi-Level Investigation Of The Effects Of A Crew Chief Intervention On Job Attitudes, Occupational Stress, And Organizational Commitment, Michael Charles Leo

Dissertations and Theses

High-profile instances of workplace violence and increased pressure from competitors have threatened the viability of one of the nation's largest employers, the United States Postal Service (USPS). As a result, the USPS began a massive change effort in the early 1990's. One of the initiatives implemented to improve labor-management relations was a derivative of the self-managed work team known as the crew chief program. This study provides a mixed-methods and multi-level approach to understand the impact this unique program had on organizational attitudes.

The first aim of this study was to investigate whether the crew chief program reduced employees' stress …

Analysis Of Relay-Based Cellular Systems, Ansuya Negi Jan 2006

Analysis Of Relay-Based Cellular Systems, Ansuya Negi

Dissertations and Theses

Relays can be used in cellular systems to increase coverage as well as reduce the total power consumed by mobiles in a cell. This latter benefit is particularly useful for mobiles operating on a depleted battery. The relay can be a mobile, a car or any other device with the appropriate communication capabilities. In thesis we analyze the impact of using relays under different situations. We first consider the problem of reducing total power consumed in the system by employing relays intelligently. We find that in a simulated, fully random, mobile cellular network for CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access), significant …

The Effects Of Deregulation On Rail Rates: A Study On Wheat, Barley, Corn, Oat, And Soybean, Daniel Martin Vinje Jan 2006

The Effects Of Deregulation On Rail Rates: A Study On Wheat, Barley, Corn, Oat, And Soybean, Daniel Martin Vinje

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

Although the original intent of this study was to do a pre-and post-deregulation assessment of rail rates per ton-mile, the results using post-deregulation data show a significant decrease in rail rates between 1981 and 2000. While accounting for changes in shipment characteristics, savings for wheat, barley, com, oat, and soybean shippers were 63.80%, 69.17%, 49.07%, 67.97%, and 59.36%, respectively. Rate savings over time for an average 1981 shipment were 45%, 55%, 38%, 45%, and 36% for wheat, barley, com, oat, and soybean shippers, respectively. Analysis regarding the effects of deregulation of rail rates on com, soybean, and wheat on a …

Determining And Evaluating Cost-Effective Food Safety Risk Reduction Strategies At Retail Meat Facilities, Linda Lehrke Jan 2006

Determining And Evaluating Cost-Effective Food Safety Risk Reduction Strategies At Retail Meat Facilities, Linda Lehrke

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

In spite of the documented success of Pathogen Reduction and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (PR/HACCP) at the processing level, farm-level and retail-level application is optional. Several factors impact the gap of food safety regulations from farm to fork. This thesis focuses on the retail level. At the retail level, pathogen survival and the associated ability to cause further disease to humans even after being subjected to certain processing and packaging conditions have varying implications on the probability of sickness or death. This issue also arises over the fact that, sometimes, appropriate handling and processing instructions are not properly …

An Economic Assessment Of Genetic Information: Leptin Genotyping Of Breeding Cattle, Jay Douglas Mitchell Jan 2006

An Economic Assessment Of Genetic Information: Leptin Genotyping Of Breeding Cattle, Jay Douglas Mitchell

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

Recent studies show polymorphisms in the leptin gene significantly impact milk production in dairy cattle. If the leptin gene were to have a similar impact on beef cattle, calf weaning weights would be expected to increase from the increased milk production in the cows. Since weaning weight is a key component of profitability in a cow-calf operation, leptin genotyping may prove to have an economic impact in breeding cattle. However, no research has been done to link the economic impact of increased milk production to breeding cattle. Using 595 observations from genotyped cows spanning 11 years (1995-2005), calf weaning weight …

International Human Rights And Comparative Mental Disability Law: The Role Of Institutional Psychiatry In The Suppression Of Political Dissent, Michael L. Perlin Jan 2006

International Human Rights And Comparative Mental Disability Law: The Role Of Institutional Psychiatry In The Suppression Of Political Dissent, Michael L. Perlin

Articles & Chapters

For many years, institutional psychiatry was a major tool in the suppression of political dissent. Moreover, it appears painfully clear that, while the worst excesses of the past have mostly disappeared, the problem is not limited to the pages of history. What is more, the revelations of the worst of these abuses (and the concomitant rectification of many of them) may, paradoxically, have created the false illusion that all the major problems attendant to questions of institutional treatment and conditions in these nations have been solved. This is decidedly not so.

Remarkably, the issue of the human rights of persons …

An Empirical Analysis Of U.S. Foreign Direct Investment And Exports Of Processed Food Industries, Mohua Haque Jan 2006

An Empirical Analysis Of U.S. Foreign Direct Investment And Exports Of Processed Food Industries, Mohua Haque

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

This study examined the determinants of U.S. foreign direct investment (FDI) and exports of processed food. This study also examined the impact of U.S. FDI on U.S. exports on processed food. FDI and export models used for estimation in this study were based on the cost-minimizing production function. The analysis focused on ten countries for the period of 1989-2004. Four of them were Asian countries: India, Japan, South Korea, and Thailand. Six of them were European countries: Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom. The model was estimated using the two-way error component three-stage least squares (EC3SLS) method. …

Case Studies In Farm Management, Karl Nelson Jodock Jan 2006

Case Studies In Farm Management, Karl Nelson Jodock

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

Previous research on teaching methods in economics demonstrates the need for active learning. The use of case studies is one way to fill that need. Two case studies are developed; they can be used to give students experience in applying farm management concepts to real farm management decisions. Students are given the opportunity to analyze an expansion decision at a typical North Dakota cash crop farm. Students also evaluate a producer's marketing strategies, develop marketing plans, and make recommendations for the future. Teaching notes are included to provide guidance for the instructor. The case studies are expected to provide an …

Creating Positive Facts On The Ground: A Viable Palestinian State Overview, Byron Bland, Lee Ross, Walid Salem Jan 2006

Creating Positive Facts On The Ground: A Viable Palestinian State Overview, Byron Bland, Lee Ross, Walid Salem

Nevada Law Journal

This paper makes a series of inter-related points. (1) The main features of a Palestinian-Israeli agreement for a "two-state" solution-if such an agreement is to be achieved-have become very clear. (2) The long-term success of such an agreement in meeting the needs of the two state will depend on the viability of the Palestinian state that is created, which in turn will depend on three features-contiguity of Palestinian territories, permeability of the border with Israel, and normal human security for its citizens. (3) The current political climate does not allow the creation of such a state through standard bilateral negotiations. …

Understanding The Nature Of Surgical Excellence Using A Competency Modeling Approach, Hope S. Hanner-Bailey Jan 2006

Understanding The Nature Of Surgical Excellence Using A Competency Modeling Approach, Hope S. Hanner-Bailey

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Currently, a thorough description of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other personal characteristics (KSAOs) that distinguish an exceptional surgeon does not exist. This knowledge is pertinent to the development of selection, training, and performance assessment methods that can be used to develop high performing surgeons. Expert surgeons from around the country were recruited to participate in an interview to discuss the KSAOs (i.e., the competencies) needed to be exceptional in the field. A smaller number of novice surgeons were also interviewed. The expert interview data were distilled into a competency model that consists of ten competencies and patterns within the …
