Form-Based Code As A Regulatory Tool For Mixed Use Urban Infill Development In Lincoln, Nebraska, David A. Gaspers

Community and Regional Planning Program: Theses

The separation of incompatible uses by zoning has been an established land regulatory tool for the past eighty years. The Standard State Zoning Enabling Act was made available to states by the U.S. Department of Commerce in 1924 to provide state governments with standardized language with which they could pass legislation that would grant governments the authority to enact zoning ordinances to promote the health, safety and welfare of the public. The United States Supreme Court held up the legality of zoning with the landmark 1926 case of Euclid v. Ambler Realty. Since that time, zoning has been the predominant …

Screencrayons: Using Screen Captures For Annotation And Research, Trent Alan Taufer Dec 2006

Screencrayons: Using Screen Captures For Annotation And Research, Trent Alan Taufer

Theses and Dissertations

In a world full of digital information we should be able to easily collect, organize, annotate, and leverage information from many different sources. This should be easy to do and not interrupt our normal workflow. A system to support information collection and organization should be user-friendly and as unobtrusive as possible, while still allowing for flexible and intelligent annotation. It should also be able to leverage the inherent information content of a collection of annotated information. We present a system that will demonstrate how these ideas can come together to make information collection easier and more productive. The system facilitates …

Scrolls Of Love: Ruth And The Song Of Songs, Peter S. Hawkins, Lesleigh C. Stahlberg Dec 2006

Scrolls Of Love: Ruth And The Song Of Songs, Peter S. Hawkins, Lesleigh C. Stahlberg

Religion

Scrolls of Love is a book of unions. Edited by a Jew and a Christian who are united by a shared passion for the Bible and a common literary hermeneutic, it joins two biblical scrolls and gathers around them a diverse community of interpreters. It brings together Ruth and the Song of Songs, two seemingly disparate texts of the Hebrew Bible, and reads them through a number of the methodological and theological perspectives.

Respectful of traditional biblical scholarship, the collection of essays moves beyond it; alert to contemporary trends, the volume returns venerable interpretive tradition to center stage. Most significantly, …

2006 Fall Engr333 Project Final Report, 2006 Fall Engr333

ENGR 333

The objective of this project was to demonstrate Calvin’s interest in alternative energy. The development of a short-term plan to implement a demonstration wind turbine and a long-term plan to determine the feasibility of a larger turbine for the future demonstrates this interest. The class was divided into five teams: management, external relations, long-term technology, short-term technology, and campus infrastructure. While each team had its own objectives, everyone worked together to share information and accomplish the overall project goals. This management technique provided necessary structure and simulated an environment typically found in a career environment.

Functional Model Of Cost And Time For Highway Construction Projects, Jin-Fang Shr, Wei-Tong Chen Dec 2006

Functional Model Of Cost And Time For Highway Construction Projects, Jin-Fang Shr, Wei-Tong Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

It is commonly accepted that construction cost, time and quality performance has been regarded as the major success factors for a construction project. With the increasing use of innovative contracts in highway construction, the relationship between construction cost and time has become more crucial than ever. Improved control of time value has become necessary, for quantifying the functional relationship between construction cost and time. This study explores the functional relationship between highway construction cost and time. Data from projects of the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) in the US is utilized to develop and illustrate the quantifying model. The proposed …

Use Of Speed Monitoring Display With Changeable Message Sign To Reduce Vehicle Speeds In Sc Work Zones, Abhijit Kenjale

All Theses

This research focuses on the reducing traffic speeds through work zones. Speed being the major problem for work zone safety, there was a need to develop effective traffic control devices. Thus with a aim to reduce speeds in work zone there was an effort by the Clemson University research team to come with several effective devices for South Carolina work zones. Advances in technology required some kind of a new and unique device to be developed that would display the driver speed and would also display a dynamic message. This thesis focuses on the use of such a device. The …

Measurement Of The BS0 Lifetime Using Semileptonic Decays, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We report a measurement of the Bs0 lifetime in the semileptonic decay channel Bs0 → Ds- μ+νX (and its charge conjugate), using approximately 0.4 fb-1 of data collected with the D0 detector during 2002–2004. Using 5176 reconstructed Ds- μ+ signal events, we have measured the Bs0 lifetime to be τ(Bs0) = 1.398 ± 0.044(stat) -0.025+0.028(syst) ps. This is the most precise measurement of the Bs0 lifetime to date.

Model For Light Scalars In Qcd, Joseph Schechter, Amir H. Fariborz, Renata Jora Dec 2006

Model For Light Scalars In Qcd, Joseph Schechter, Amir H. Fariborz, Renata Jora

Physics - All Scholarship

We propose a systematic procedure to study a generalized linear sigma model which can give a physical picture of possible mixing between q{\bar q} and qq{\bar q}{\bar q} low lying spin zero states. In the limit of zero quark masses, we derive the model independent results for the properties of the Nambu Goldstone pseudoscalar particles. For getting information on the scalars it is necessary to make a specific choice of terms. We impose two plausible physical criteria - the modeling of the axial anomaly and the suppression of effective vertices representing too many fermion lines - for limiting the large …

Protecting Mobile Ad Hoc Networks From Spurious Cts Attacks 'Carrier Sensing Based Deferral Mechanism', Sreekanth Pagadala Dec 2006

Protecting Mobile Ad Hoc Networks From Spurious Cts Attacks 'Carrier Sensing Based Deferral Mechanism', Sreekanth Pagadala

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Request-To-Send (RTS)/Clear-To-Send (CTS) mechanism is used to combat Hidden/Exposed node problems in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs). The popular implementation of the RTS/CTS mechanism may lead to virtual blocking of the wireless medium. Problem arises if a malicious node randomly sends out a large number of spurious CTS frames in order to falsely block regular nodes in its neighborhood. Such an attack is termed as spurious CTS attack. In this thesis, we investigate the effects of such spurious CTS attacks and propose a solution to mitigate the problem. Our proposed solution, Carrier Sensing based Deferral (CSD) mechanism, asks nodes …

Detecting Routing Misbehavior In Mobile Ad Hoc Network, Kejun Liu Dec 2006

Detecting Routing Misbehavior In Mobile Ad Hoc Network, Kejun Liu

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Routing misbehavior in MANETs (Mobile Ad Hoc Networks) is studied in this thesis. In general, routing protocols for MANETs are designed based on the assumption that all par- ticipating nodes are fully cooperative. However, due to the open structure and scarcely available battery-based energy, node misbehaviors may exist. One such routing misbehavior is that some selfish nodes will participate in the route discovery and maintenance processes but refuse to forward data packets. Therefore, we propose the 2ACK scheme that serves as an add-on technique for routing schemes to detect routing misbehavior and to mitigate their adverse effect. The main idea …

Digital Dissection Of Radiographs, Using The Early Cretaceous Bird Confuciusornis And Photoshop Cs2tm, Sirelious White Dec 2006

Digital Dissection Of Radiographs, Using The Early Cretaceous Bird Confuciusornis And Photoshop Cs2tm, Sirelious White

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In the past, radiographs (x-ray "shadowgraphs") have been used by paleontologists as ways to identify and capture bone images. Primarily, this was done to examine the skeletal elements without having to remove the surrounding matrix. Radiographs have so much three-dimensional information compressed onto a two-dimension image that it is often impossible to understand the entire skeleton. Obviously, it would be desirable to strip away the readily interpretable skeleton elements and examine those less well understood. An initial set of experiments were performed on a particular section of a radiograph of Confuciusornis sanctus, as a subject, while utilizing Photoshop CS2TM to …
