Trends And Interannual Variability Of The South China Sea Surface Winds, Surface Height, And Surface Temperature In The Recent Decade, Guohong Fang, Haiying Chen, Zexun Wei, Yonggang Wang, Xinyi Wang, Chunyan Li

Faculty Publications

Trends and interannual variability of the surface winds (SW), sea surface height (SSH), and sea surface temperature (SST) of the South China Sea (SCS) in 1993-2003 are analyzed using monthly products from satellite observations. Time series are smoothed with a 12-month running mean filter. The east and north components of the SW, SSH, and SST have linear trends of 0.53 ± 0.35 ms-1 decade-1, -0.04 ± 0.17 ms-1 decade-1, 6.7 ± 2.7 cm decade-1, and 0.50 ± 0.26 K decade-1, respectively. The sea level rising rate and sea surface warming …

Nodal Structure Of Unconventional Superconductors Probed By Angle Resolved Thermal Transport Measurements, Y. Matsuda, K. Izawa, I. Vekhter Nov 2006

Nodal Structure Of Unconventional Superconductors Probed By Angle Resolved Thermal Transport Measurements, Y. Matsuda, K. Izawa, I. Vekhter

Faculty Publications

Over the past two decades, unconventional superconductivity with gap symmetry other than s wave has been found in several classes of materials, including heavy fermion, high Tc, and organic superconductors. Unconventional superconductivity is characterized by anisotropic superconducting gap functions, which may have zeros (nodes) along certain directions in the Brillouin zone. The nodal structure is closely related to the pairing interaction, and it is widely believed that the presence of nodes is a signature of magnetic or some other exotic, rather than conventional phonon mediated, pairing mechanism. Therefore experimental determination of the gap function is of fundamental importance. However, the …

Measurement Of The Cp-Violation Parameter Of B0 Mixing And Decay With Pp̅ → ΜμX Data, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration Nov 2006

Measurement Of The Cp-Violation Parameter Of B0 Mixing And Decay With Pp̅ → ΜμX Data, V. M. Abazov, Kenneth A. Bloom, Gregory R. Snow, D0 Collaboration

Kenneth Bloom Publications

We measure the dimuon charge asymmetry A in pp̅ collisions at a center of mass energy √s =1960 GeV. The data was recorded with the D0 detector and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of approximately 1:0 fb-1. Assuming that the asymmetry A is due to asymmetric B0 ↔ B̅ mixing and decay, we extract the CP-violation parameter of B0 mixing and decay: [ℜ(∊B0)]/[1+∣∊B0∣2 = (AB0)/4 = -0.0023 ± 0.0011 (stat) ± 0.0008(syst). AB0 is the dimuon charge asymmetry from decays of B …

Learning In Short-Time Horizons With Measurable Costs, Patrick Bowen Mullen Nov 2006

Learning In Short-Time Horizons With Measurable Costs, Patrick Bowen Mullen

Theses and Dissertations

Dynamic pricing is a difficult problem for machine learning. The environment is noisy, dynamic and has a measurable cost associated with exploration that necessitates that learning be done in short-time horizons. These short-time horizons force the learning algorithms to make pricing decisions based on scarce data. In this work, various machine learning algorithms are compared in the context of dynamic pricing. These algorithms include the Kalman filter, artificial neural networks, particle swarm optimization and genetic algorithms. The majority of these algorithms have been modified to handle the pricing problem. The results show that these adaptations allow the learning algorithms to …

A New Architecture For Single-Event Upset Detection & Reconfiguration Of Sram-Based Fpgas, Ihesiaba Kamanu Nov 2006

A New Architecture For Single-Event Upset Detection & Reconfiguration Of Sram-Based Fpgas, Ihesiaba Kamanu

Theses

Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) are used in a variety of applications, ranging from consumer electronics to devices in spacecrafts because of their flexibility in achieving requirements such as low cost, high performance, and fast turnaround. SRAM-based FPGAs can experience single bit flips in the configuration memory due to high-energy neutrons or alpha particles hitting critical nodes in the SRAM cells, by transferring enough energy to effect the change. High energy particles can be emitted by cosmic radiation or traces of radioactive elements in device packaging. The result of this could range from unwanted functional or data modification, data loss …

Penalized Likelihood And Bayesian Methods For Sparse Contingency Tables: An Analysis Of Alternative Splicing In Full-Length Cdna Libraries, Corinne Dahinden, Giovanni Parmigiani, Mark C. Emerick, Peter Buhlmann Nov 2006

Penalized Likelihood And Bayesian Methods For Sparse Contingency Tables: An Analysis Of Alternative Splicing In Full-Length Cdna Libraries, Corinne Dahinden, Giovanni Parmigiani, Mark C. Emerick, Peter Buhlmann

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

We develop methods to perform model selection and parameter estimation in loglinear models for the analysis of sparse contingency tables to study the interaction of two or more factors. Typically, datasets arising from so-called full-length cDNA libraries, in the context of alternatively spliced genes, lead to such sparse contingency tables. Maximum Likelihood estimation of log-linear model coefficients fails to work because of zero cell entries. Therefore new methods are required to estimate the coefficients and to perform model selection. Our suggestions include computationally efficient penalization (Lasso-type) approaches as well as Bayesian methods using MCMC. We compare these procedures in a …

Multiple Testing With An Empirical Alternative Hypothesis, James E. Signorovitch Nov 2006

Multiple Testing With An Empirical Alternative Hypothesis, James E. Signorovitch

Harvard University Biostatistics Working Paper Series

An optimal multiple testing procedure is identified for linear hypotheses under the general linear model, maximizing the expected number of false null hypotheses rejected at any significance level. The optimal procedure depends on the unknown data-generating distribution, but can be consistently estimated. Drawing information together across many hypotheses, the estimated optimal procedure provides an empirical alternative hypothesis by adapting to underlying patterns of departure from the null. Proposed multiple testing procedures based on the empirical alternative are evaluated through simulations and an application to gene expression microarray data. Compared to a standard multiple testing procedure, it is not unusual for …
