Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We present spectroscopy of a transit of the exoplanet HD 189733b. By modeling the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect (the anomalous Doppler shift due to the partial eclipse of the rotating stellar surface), we find the angle between the sky projections of the stellar spin axis and orbit normal to be λ = -1fdg4 ± 1fdg1. This is the third case of a "hot Jupiter" for which λ has been measured. In all three cases λ is small, ruling out random orientations with 99.96% confidence, and suggesting that the inward migration of hot Jupiters generally preserves spin-orbit alignment.

An Investigation Of Relationships Between Oral Reading Rate And Reading Comprehension, Karen F. Rimkus Nov 2006

An Investigation Of Relationships Between Oral Reading Rate And Reading Comprehension, Karen F. Rimkus

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Quantitative research methods were used including observations and tallies of reading rates, data compilation, generation of scatterplots, and descriptive statistical analysis of the results. The research focused on observations of 69 fourth graders from two fourth grade classes in a private parochial elementary school in Las Vegas, Nevada. The students each read a 198-word passage to measure oral reading rate. A positive relationship between oral reading rate and reading comprehension was then determined. As a result, teachers may be able to use an oral reading rate test to design curriculum before the Terra Nova achievement test is administered in September. …

Personal Health Records: The People's Choice?, Lisa Sprague Nov 2006

Personal Health Records: The People's Choice?, Lisa Sprague

National Health Policy Forum

Information technology (IT), especially in the form of an electronic health record (EHR), is touted by many as a key component of meaningful improvement in health care delivery and outcomes. A personal health record (PHR) may be an element of an EHR or a stand-alone record. Proponents of PHRs see them as tools that will improve consumers’ ability to manage their care and will also enlist consumers as advocates for widespread health IT adoption. This issue brief explores what a PHR is, the extent of demand for it, issues that need to be resolved before such records can be expected …

Writing The Nation: Ignacio Manuel Altamirano's Romantic Vision And Porfirian Development, Jason C. Denzin Nov 2006

Writing The Nation: Ignacio Manuel Altamirano's Romantic Vision And Porfirian Development, Jason C. Denzin

Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

As articulated in Ignacio Manuel Altamirano’s Romantic novel El Zarco (1888) and the accounts of contemporary travelers, various interpretations about the pace and course of the country’s development abounded in Mexico during the late nineteenth-century. The current project evaluates El Zarco as a historical text and uses it as a window into the Porfirian nation-building project. By comparing the vision outlined in the novel with the published accounts of contemporary travelers this project demonstrates the contested nature of development among Mexico’s national elites during the Porfiriato. This thesis argues that from the competing visions of national development specific categories for …

Job Applicants’ Testing And Organizational Perceptions: The Effects Of Test Information And Attitude Strength, Andrew L. Noon Nov 2006

Job Applicants’ Testing And Organizational Perceptions: The Effects Of Test Information And Attitude Strength, Andrew L. Noon

Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This quasi-experimental study examined job applicants’ organizational perceptions prior to and immediately after completing pre-employment assessments, and after the hiring decision was announced. Participants were actual applicants (N = 262) for non-exempt level data processing positions at a medium-size Midwestern insurance company. As part of the selection process, applicants completed both a cognitive ability test and a personality inventory. Information about the tests was used as a manipulation. Approximately half of the participants received information prior to completing the assessments that explained the tests’ content, job relatedness, and validity, and a description of the testing process, while the other …

Utah Commercial Motor Vehicle Weigh-In-Motion Data Analysis And Calibration Methodology, Luke W. Seegmiller

Theses and Dissertations

In preparation for changes in pavement design methodologies and to begin to assess the effectiveness of the weigh-in-motion (WIM) system in Utah, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) contracted with a Brigham Young University (BYU) research team to conduct an evaluation of their commercial motor vehicle (CMV) data collection system statewide. The objective of this research was to evaluate the CMV data collection program in the state of Utah and to make limited recommendations for potential improvements and changes that will aid in more detailed and accurate CMV data collection across the state. To accomplish the research objectives, several tasks …

The Development, Interpretation And Scope Of The Word "Sex" Within Title Vii: With Particular Reference To "Sexual Orientation.", Abbas Kazerounian

ExpressO

This is a paper demonstrating the shortcomings of the current jurisprudence in the U.S. with regards to the readings of Title VII's construction of the word "sex." Currently sexual minorities are not considered within Title VII and therefore sexual minorities are not offered the same protections under this Congressional Act. This paper shows how this is a misreading of the statute and how it should include protection for sexual minorities.

Does Law School Curriculum Affect Bar Examination Passage? An Empirical Analysis Of The Factors Which Were Related To Bar Examination Passage Between 2001 And 2006 At A Midwestern Law School, Douglas Rush, Hisako Matsuo Nov 2006

Does Law School Curriculum Affect Bar Examination Passage? An Empirical Analysis Of The Factors Which Were Related To Bar Examination Passage Between 2001 And 2006 At A Midwestern Law School, Douglas Rush, Hisako Matsuo

ExpressO

Does Law School Curriculum Affect Bar Examination Passage? Abstract A quantitative, empirical study was undertaken to determine whether there was a relationship between the number of bar examination subject matter courses taken in law school and bar examination passage. Previous studies reported relationships between LSAT scores, undergraduate grade point averages (UGPA), law school class rank and bar examination passage. Many law schools are advocating or mandating that students with low class rank take upper division, bar examination subject matter courses in an effort to improve the bar examination passage rate for those students. This study examined all 2001-2005 graduates of …
