Metabolic And Phenotypic Characterization Of Aerobic Pcb Degrading Bacteria Isolated From Kalamazoo River Sediments, Brenton K. Lehmkuhl
Metabolic And Phenotypic Characterization Of Aerobic Pcb Degrading Bacteria Isolated From Kalamazoo River Sediments, Brenton K. Lehmkuhl
Masters Theses
The Kalamazoo River is contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) which are neurotoxins and suspected carcinogens. The goal of this study was to isolate, identify, and metabolically characterize PCB degrading strains of aerobic bacteria. Biphenyl enrichments resulted in the isolation of putative PCB degrading strains from different locations along the river. Based on 16S rRNA gene analysis the isolated strains were identified as belonging to the genera of Achromobacter, Acidovorax, Cellulosimicrobium, Paenibacillus, Pseudomonas, and Rhodococcus. These strains were screened for their PCB degrading ability and congener specificity. All of the isolated strains degraded PCBs via the 2,3-dioxygenase pathway. The range …

Small additions of boron to conventional titanium alloys have been found to produce significant changes to the microstructures and associated properties. Grain refinement and improved strength and stiffness are first-order effects, which lead to possibilities for developing novel and affordable processing methodologies and to enhance performance over conventional titanium alloys. In this article, we introduce this new class of titanium alloys and describe unique formability benefits achieved via engineering microstructures.

Phishing, e-mails sent out by hackers to lure unsuspecting victims into giving up confidential information, has been the cause of countless security breaches and has experienced in the last year an increase in frequency and diversity. While regular phishing attacks are easily thwarted, designing the attack to include user context information could potentially increase the user's vulnerability. To prevent this, phishing education needs to be considered. In this paper we provide an overview of phishing education, focusing on context aware attacks and introduce a new strategy for educating users by combining phishing IQ tests and class discussions. The technique encompasses …

The damage caused by phishing does not only apply to monetary property alone. The fragile bonds of trust that organizations build with their constituents are shattered in the process. As people loss faith in the reliability of electronic communication methods, companies loss their customer base. In the case disasters, people can spend billions in preparation, to analyze weaknesses and improve recovery time, only to have thrust shattered by phishing attacks. This in turn causes a significant loss in money, resources and time. In this study we review the main characteristics of phishing attacks and their impact to society. Based on …

The Antarctic shelf is traversed by large-scale troughs developed by glacial erosion. Swath bathymetric, lithologic, and chronologic data from jumbo piston cores from four sites along the East Antarctic margin (Iceberg Alley, the Nielsen Basin, the Svenner Channel, and the Mertz-Ninnis Trough) are used to demonstrate that these cross-shelf features controlled development of calving bay reentrants in the Antarctic ice sheet during deglaciation. At all sites except the Mertz-Ninnis Trough, the transition between the Last Glacial Maximum and the Holocene is characterized by varved couplets deposited during a short interval of extremely high primary productivity in a fjordlike setting. Nearly …

Court Review: Volume 42, Issue 3-4 - Editor's Note
Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association
This issue presents four viewpoints on current issues involving judicial elections, politics, and the effect of public opinion on the courts. In our lead article, Shira Goodman and Lynn Marks of Pennsylvanians for Modern Courts tell the story of Pennsylvania’s 2005 retention election for the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. With very little warning, public opposition developed to the retention of two justices: one was retained with 54% of the vote and one was thrown out of office with only 49% voting to retain him. The election was unusual because it did not relate to opinions issued by either justice. Rather, the …

Court Review: Volume 42, Issue 3-4 - E-Courts: The Times They Are A-Changin’, James E. Mcmillan
Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association
The title obviously comes from Bob Dylan’s classic song from 1964. That song captured the spirit of the times and again, in a small way, captures ours as well. This year’s upcoming E-Courts Conference (www.e-courts.org) in December will highlight both the changes that computers have brought to court operations and where things are going in the future. Court operations have been impacted over the past decade with the implementation of electronic court document filing (aka E-filing). This year the U.S. federal courts will have electronic filing available in nearly all district and bankruptcy courts. We have seen that not as …

Court Review: Volume 42, Issue 3-4 - Lessons From An Unusual Retention Election, Shira J. Goodman, Lynn A. Marks
Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association
On November 8, 2005, something happened in Pennsylvania that has never happened before: an appellate judge, a supreme court justice no less, lost an uncontested retention election. Not only was the loss unprecedented, but with the exception of one retention election in 1993, appellate justices and judges in Pennsylvania routinely have won retention by margins of 70% to 30%. This year, one justice lost his retention election and another barely won with just 54% of the vote. Retention elections have been a feature of judicial elections in Pennsylvania since the state constitution was amended in 1969. Following election to an …

Court Review: Volume 42, Issue 3-4 - Seizing The Accountability Moment: Enlisting Americans In The Fight To Keep Courts Fair, Impartial, And Independent, Bert Brandenberg
Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association
Did the 2005 uproar over Terri Schiavo’s end-of-life case mark a peak in the recent surge of attacks on the independence of America’s courts? When the case generated threats to impeach and even murder the presiding judge, and Congress passed a bill seeking to manipulate the case, broad public disapproval helped end the political crisis.1 The President backpedaled—“I believe in an independent judiciary. I believe in checks and balances”2—and dispatched the Vice President and Attorney General to add their reassurances. Just a few months later, Supreme Court nomination hearings offered little hint of the rising tide of fury that courts …

Court Review: Volume 42, Issue 3-4 - A Profile Of Settlement, John Barkai, Elizabeth Kent, Pamela Martin
Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association
Ninety-eight percent of civil cases settle,1 right? Well, not exactly. Although claims of settlement rates of 90% and above are cited frequently, settlement rates really are not that high. Many commentators start with an accurate picture of low, single-digit trial rates (typically 2%-3%), but then they inappropriately assume the inverse—namely, that all the remaining cases are settled. Commentators ignore the fact that a significant proportion of cases are terminated for reasons other than trial or settlement, and their mistake goes undetected because most state judicial systems do not collect any information about settlements. On the other hand, other people, speaking …
Memory For Non-Focal Words, John Jones
Memory For Non-Focal Words, John Jones
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In two experiments a modified flanker paradigm was used to simultaneously present a focal word and an incidental non-focal word. The participants' task was to process the focal word in one of two conditions: naming aloud or a conceptual decision (concrete or abstract). The focal and non-focal words were either semantically related or not. Participants were instructed to direct their attention at the focal word. Furthermore, the presentation of the focal word was brief to reduce the possibility of eye movement to the non-focal word. Memory was measured with implicit and explicit memory tests. Evidence was found to suggest implicit …

Development, Evaluation, And Selection Of Advanced Transit Signal Priority Concept Directions, Amer Shalaby, Jinwoo Lee, John Greenough, Stanley Hung, Michael D. Bowie
Journal of Public Transportation
This article presents a process to define the framework for an advanced Transit Signal Priority (TSP) algorithm. For this study, traffic and transit agencies from a broad range of municipalities in Ontario, Canada, provided their views and expertise on various TSP-related issues, including practical needs, design implementation, performance measures, and challenges in developing effective TSP control systems. Based on their inputs as well as the objectives of the project, a set of TSP control concept directions was developed that are characterized with different methodologies and technologies. A listing of selection criteria was also established to evaluate the proposed TSP concept …

A Distributed Sensor Data Management Infrastructure Based On 802.15.4/Zigbee Networks, Tianqiang Li
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
Wireless sensor networks consist of a certain number of autonomous devices with sensor, every device has certain detection functionality like light, temperature pressure etc. Communication by using the radio frequency make these spatially distributed devices feasible to oversee the activities in a large scale of area/space. 802.15.4/ZigBee networks are slated to run in the unlicensed frequencies. It is a packet-based radio protocol aimed at very low-cost, battery-operated widgets and sensors that can intercommunicate and send low-bandwidth data to each other. This thesis covers the content of a software solution of data management for an 802.15.4 networks. Its main contribution lies …

Conversations In Private Spheres: Reconstructing Habermas's Universal Pragmatics And Ideal Speech Situation In Private Spheres, Phillip Dewayne Casteel
Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive
The author makes the argument that "public spheres" do not exist and demonstrates how Habermas's communicative actions, specifically Habermas's concepts of universal pragmatics and the ideal speech situation, can be reconstructed in private spheres to formulate a more viable philosophical methodology for validating truth, constructing self-identities, and sustaining the social.
Maternal Defensive Behavior Of Umbonia Ataliba Treehoppers, December 2006, Sarah Anvik
Maternal Defensive Behavior Of Umbonia Ataliba Treehoppers, December 2006, Sarah Anvik
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
A population of Umbonia ataliba (Homoptera: Membracidae) located between 1300 and 1500 m in Monteverde, Costa Rica was studied from October to November 2006. The maternal defensive behavior exhibited by these subsocial insects toward nymphs of different developmental stages was experimentally investigated. The purpose of my study was to determine how the defensive behavior changed from eggs to adults and in response to two different predator types. I attached dead wasps to long wooden sticks and then simulated predator approaches toward family groups of eggs, second instar and fourth instars nymphs. I found that the defensive behavior by females guarding …

Exploring Appreciative Inquiry And Its Link To Creativity, Maren Baermann
Exploring Appreciative Inquiry And Its Link To Creativity, Maren Baermann
Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects
The purpose of this project was to gain a deeper insight into Appreciative Inquiry and to understand possible connections between this philosophy of change and creativity in general and the creative process in particular. The intention of combining a literature research with a practical application was fourfold: Firstly, this approach would provide insight into the philosophy of Appreciative Inquiry (AI) and its methods and tools. Secondly, equipped with the background knowledge on creativity available to me from the creative studies program and beyond, I expected to discover some parallels and links from AI to creativity during my literature research. Thirdly, …

Curious About Curiosity?, Sharon Walsh
Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects
There is a strong connection between creativity and curiosity. Curiosity is the foundation for creative people, creative process, and creative environment to foster innovation. To evaluate how curiosity stimulates creativity, this project explored the nature of curiosity and the role in creativity. The heart of this project is a review of literature, showing how psychological research has explored curiosity, and the application of curiosity as a central element in personal and business success. This literature review also unveils the key barriers to curiosity and how to overcome them using a variety of techniques.
