Vaginal Hirudiniasis From Dhaherah Province, Oman: With A Note On Internal Hirudiniasis, Mohamed A. Idris
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
A 75 years old lady from the Dhaherah Province, Oman, presented at Ibri Hospital, complaining from abnormal vaginalbleeding. Histopathological investigations of a cervical biopsy revealed no atypical features. A worm-like organism was removed fromthe vagina. Histocytological investigations of the organism revealed typical structures of a leech. The case was identified as vaginalhirudiniasis, probably due to Limnatis nilotica that necessitated a note on internal hirudiniasis.

The Role Of Caregivers In The Management Of Alzheimer’S Disease : Examples From Asian Countries, Joydeep D. Chaudhuri, Srijit Das
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
The demographic profile of the Asian population is rapidly changing, with a fast increasing ageing population, owing to an increase in longevity and a decreasing birth rate. Moreover, due to improved medical facilities and the increased aged population, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is fast emerging as a major health problem in many Asian countries. As curative treatment for AD is still elusive, care giving is an important component of the management of AD. While Western countries have recognised this issue, besides highly industrialized Japan, the Asian initiative has been relatively slow. This article aims to address issues involved in caregiving in …

Therapeutic Effect Of Air-Jet Therapy In Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema: A Preliminary Report, Wan-Chia Lee, Cheng-Liang Chou, Cheng-Min Chiu, Tcho-Jen Liu, Rai-Chi Chan
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Lymphedema is a common sequela of breast cancer therapy. The decreased arm function with swelling, pain, numbness, and a limited range of motion, is associated with a psychological distress that affects the quality of life. There is no cure for breast cancer-related lymphedema. Complex physical therapy is currently the mainstream of therapy, combined with manual lymphatic drainage, pneumatic compression pumps and compression bandaging. The purpose of this study is to evaluate compressed air therapy as a new approach to lymphedema management.Eleven women with breast cancer-related arm lymphedema were recruited into the study. Air-jet therapy was performed to massage limb in …

An Investigation Of Communication Attitudes, Quality Of Communication, And Locus Of Control In Stutterers And Non-Stutterers, Feng-Chu Tseng, Lin-Fen Hsieh
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Adults with stuttering are not only disfluent in speech, but also have problems in social adjustment and social interactions. That is, stuttering is a speech disorder, as well as a communication disorder. This study was aimed to examine the communication attitudes, the quality of communications, and the locus of control in adults with stuttering. Twenty-five males and six females, aged between 18 and 47 (mean 26.8) participated as the stutter-group in the study. Another group of twenty-five males and six females, aged between 18 and 48, participated as the non-stutter group. All of the participants were administered with Modified Erickson …

Vegetation Structure And Heavy Metal Uptake By Plants In The Mining-Impacted And Non Mining-Impacted Sites Of Southern Lake Victoria Wetlands, G. Y. S. Mtui, C. Mligo, M. K. D. Mutakyahwa, J. R. Ikingura
Tanzania Journal of Science
This study assessed the plant species composition and the heavy metal uptake by plants in the mining-impacted and non mining-impacted areas of the southern Lake Victoria basin. The vegetation of the wetlands was stratified into riverine forest, riverine thickets, swampy grassland, open woodland and floodplain grassland. Plant diversity at Nyamtukuza ranged between 2.34 to 2.70; at Geita was 2.29 to 2.57 and Mwakitolyo was between 1.08 to 1.70, which was significantly lower than the other two sites; whereas variation in plant species richness was not significant. TWINSPAN classification resulted into four clusters of the vegetation communities. Cluster A, a shrubby …

Incentivizing And Protecting Informants Prior To Mass Atrocities Such As Genocide: An Alternative To Post Hoc Courts And Tribunals, Eric Talbot Jensen
Faculty Scholarship
International institutions are almost exclusively reactive to violations of international law. There are very few systemic methods of proactively trying to prevent egregious violations such as genocide; rather, international law seems to take punishing violators as its sole approach. In modern times, most of the punishment and post-event enforcement has come through international courts and tribunals. These courts and tribunals are astoundingly expensive and notoriously inefficient. More importantly, the threat of prosecution does not appear to act as an effective deterrent in preventing criminal acts. This is unacceptable. With hundreds of thousands of lives at stake, the international community must …

World Maritime University Dissertations
This dissertation is a study of the sensitive and complex maritime security issues of transportation of stowaways, smuggling drugs and contraband goods by sea from the Maghreb region. It considers the national and international contexts within which those threats have grown and discusses the root causes and consequences of this menace with emphasis on legal and policy aspects. This latter represents a challenge for the Maghreb States related to strategies, decision making fostering new reforms and proactive countermeasures. A particular focus on the notion of “maritime crime” is offered. An overview of the new maritime security concerns faced by the …

Evaluating The Performance Of Leucaena Accessions For Agroforestry In Sub-Humid Environment, Southern Tanzania, A. E. Majule
Evaluating The Performance Of Leucaena Accessions For Agroforestry In Sub-Humid Environment, Southern Tanzania, A. E. Majule
Tanzania Journal of Science
The performance of Leucaena accessions on acid soils in eastern coast Tanzania for agroforestry was evaluated for three years. Plant tree parameters assessed were fodder yield and plant stem height, stem girth, the number of total branches and poles production. Also, Leucaena psyllid, a common pest threatening the plants was also counted. Soil parameters assessed were pH organic carbon, total nitrogen, exchangeable calcium and magnesium. Result showed significant difference in growth between Leucaena accessions. Leucaena leucocephal cv K8 and Leucaena diversifolia were able to grow fast reaching 4.7 and 3.3 m respectively within a period of three years. Leucaena diversifolia …
