Contemporary Korean Ecclesiastical And Social Conditions Calling For Conversion Church Growth, Paul H. Kim Jan 2006

Contemporary Korean Ecclesiastical And Social Conditions Calling For Conversion Church Growth, Paul H. Kim

Journal of the American Society for Church Growth

“‘Why is the Korean church growing so rapidly? Many Christians around the world have asked this question,” say Bong-Rin Ro and Marlin L. Nelson, in the preface of the book Korean Church Growth Explosion published a decade ago. Today, many Christians around the world ask a different question: Why has the Korean church, that grew so rapidly in such a short time, slipped into a stagnation for about two decades?

The Horror Of Looking: Lynching And The Empathetic Eye, Greta Methot Jan 2006

The Horror Of Looking: Lynching And The Empathetic Eye, Greta Methot

Open Access Dissertations

During the summer of 2000, the New York Historical Society enjoyed its "biggest continuing attendance of any exhibition in years," with a collection of photographs entitled, Without Sanctuary: Photographs and Postcards of Lynching in America (Valdez 88). The more than seventy images featured, all taken between 1880 and 1961, illustrate in gruesome detail, a vicious chapter in American history. This exhibit, which is still making the rounds at U.S. art museums and was reproduced on the Internet and in a $60 coffee-table book, offers tremendous opportunity for critical thinking about the intersections of race, spectatorship, and violence in America. My …

National Board For Professional Teaching Standards (Nbpts) Certification Portfolio, Margaret Hogan Jan 2006

National Board For Professional Teaching Standards (Nbpts) Certification Portfolio, Margaret Hogan

Graduate Research Papers

As a middle school science teacher I chose to complete the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) certification portfolio for my non-thesis option in the area of Early Adolescence/Science.

I primarily undertook this project knowing that it would bring me closer to achieving my goal of becoming an accomplished teacher. I believed that pursuing this non-thesis option would force me to make a conscious and deliberate effort to objectively assess for weaknesses and strengths in my teaching practices and to make adjustments accordingly using the knowledge that I acquired during my master's education.

Bundling And Consumer Misperception, Oren Bar-Gill Jan 2006

Bundling And Consumer Misperception, Oren Bar-Gill

University of Chicago Law Review

This Essay studies bundling of two (or more) products as a strategic response to consumer misperception. In contrast to the bundling and tying studied in the antitrust literature-strategies used by a seller with market power in market A trying to leverage its market power into market B-bundling in response to consumer misperception may occur in intensely competitive markets. The analysis demonstrates that such competitive bundling can be either welfare enhancing or welfare reducing. The Essay considers several "unbundling policies" that can protect consumers and increase welfare in markets where bundling is undesirable.

Exploring Leadership Skill Development: Adolescents, Kenneth S. Rasmussen, Marilyn F. Rasmussen Jan 2006

Exploring Leadership Skill Development: Adolescents, Kenneth S. Rasmussen, Marilyn F. Rasmussen

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

The future of America is entrusted to today’s youth. A promising future is only possible if our young people “learn to be leaders.” Youth need to become engaged in civic affairs and community, state, and national issues. But how are our youth preparing for leadership roles in the future? And how are we helping them prepare? Cynicism and voter apathy among the 18 to 25-year-old demographic group are indicators that adults need to give more attention to the development of leadership in young people. Many people who study leadership believe that leaders are made, not born, indicating that parents and …

Economics Of Managing A Livestock Enterprise During Drought, Martin K. Beutler Jan 2006

Economics Of Managing A Livestock Enterprise During Drought, Martin K. Beutler

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

On average, producers are good managers of things they can control. In ranching and farming, however, there are an infinite number of items beyond control, drought being just one of the more serious ones. Through no fault of their own, producers can sometimes find themselves in a tight economic squeeze. Unfortunately, there is no one-answer-fits-all relief from drought. The response to drought must be personal. Some producers who have tight cashflows and larger-than-average debt loads may find their options extremely limited, even facing decisions that can result in losing a lifetime’s work and a way of life—the herd must be …

Manson V. Brathwaite Revisited: Towards A New Rule Of Decision For Due Process Challenges To Eyewitness Identification Procedures, Timothy P. O'Toole, Giovanna Shay Jan 2006

Manson V. Brathwaite Revisited: Towards A New Rule Of Decision For Due Process Challenges To Eyewitness Identification Procedures, Timothy P. O'Toole, Giovanna Shay

Faculty Scholarship

Almost 30 years ago, in Manson v. Brathwaite--the Supreme Court set out a test for determining when due process requires suppression of an out-of-court identification produced by suggestive police procedures. The Manson Court rejected a per se exclusion rule in favor of a test focusing on whether an identification infected by suggestive procedures is nonetheless reliable when judged in the totality of the circumstances. The purpose of this Article is two-fold: to demonstrate that the Manson rule of decision fails to safeguard due process values, in part because it does not account for the intervening social science research, and to …

Conflicting Loyalties Facing In-House Counsel: Ethical Care And Feeding Of The Ravenous Multi-Headed Client The Fifth Annual Symposium On Legal Malpractice And Professional Responsibility., William E. Matthews, Robert M. Hoffman, Daniel C. Scott

St. Mary's Law Journal

Because of corporate scandals that shook the business world, legislative, corporate, and public fingers immediately pointed at corporate attorneys for allowing such egregious conduct to occur. In 1983, the American Bar Association (ABA) passed Model Rule 1.13, which promoted the entity theory. Under the entity theory, the organization is the in-house counsel’s only client; and the in-house counsel’s primary duty is to act in the best interest of the organization. Whether the issue is deciding to make an executive compensation disclosure in a proxy statement, taking on a dual role within the organization, acting in compliance with heightened professional responsibility …

A Radical Proposal For Lifetime Professionalism The Fifth Annual Symposium On Legal Malpractice And Professional Responsibility: Essays., Antonio Alvarado Jan 2006

A Radical Proposal For Lifetime Professionalism The Fifth Annual Symposium On Legal Malpractice And Professional Responsibility: Essays., Antonio Alvarado

St. Mary's Law Journal

Undeniably, the economics of law practice motivates the profession and immerses lawyers into a new professionalism paradigm not fully addressed by existing programs and activities. Linking professionalism to economic concerns might be considered heresy by some, yet now is the time to examine why the economic realities of practicing law sometimes cut short the best aspirations for high standards. Both the American Bar Association (ABA) and the State Bar of Texas focus extensively on questions concerning professionalism in the practice of law. Lawyers face significant economic burdens from several sources, and ironically technology does not always make practice easier. Often, …

The Employer Strikes Back: The Case For A Broad Reading Of Title Vii's Bar On Retaliation, Marilee L. Miller Jan 2006

The Employer Strikes Back: The Case For A Broad Reading Of Title Vii's Bar On Retaliation, Marilee L. Miller

Utah Law Review

Unchecked retaliation has the potential of severely undercutting Title VII's protections. When Congress enacted Title VII's antiretaliation provision, it unmistakably intended to ensure that no person would be deterred from exercising rights bestowed by Title VII. Guarantees that individuals be free from employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin will mean little if employers may punish employees for exercising the statute's protections.

Microsoft And Trinko: A Tale Of Two Courts, Spencer Weber Waller Jan 2006

Microsoft And Trinko: A Tale Of Two Courts, Spencer Weber Waller

Utah Law Review

Trinko's main defect is its attempt to radically redefine the law of monopolization while purporting to uphold established doctrine. It did far more than it had to and did it badly. Justice Stevens's opinion on standing would have sufficed, and in the alternative, the first few pages of the majority opinion would have sufficed once it found greater certainty in the regulatory provisions of the Telecommunications Act. What follows is an ode to laissez faire that is in stark contrast to everything antitrust has stood for since its inception, regardless of one's opinions about the validity of any particular theory …

The Americans With Disabilities Act And How It Affects Post-Secondary Education, Annette Louise Beck Jan 2006

The Americans With Disabilities Act And How It Affects Post-Secondary Education, Annette Louise Beck

Graduate Research Papers

The Americans with Disabilities Act and how it affects post-secondary education is what this literature review addresses. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) prohibits discrimination against someone with a disability in places of employment and public places. In 1973, the United States Congress passed Section 504 and The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was passed in 1990. Both helped solidify regulations regarding discrimination by any entity that receives federal funding including educational institutions. The law requires employers or schools to make a change or adjustment in a work or educational setting, program, or job that makes it …

Best Practices In Middle Level Mathematics Teaching And Learning, Wendy Sue Korte

Graduate Research Papers

The added pressure on students and teachers to do well in mathematics has placed a new emphasis on how best to teach math. This paper discusses the standards developed by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and how those standards can be implemented into classrooms in order to help students to increase their mathematical power. Although teaching to the standards would be a drastic change for many teachers with the proper professional development, standards-based math classes could be a reality that will help our students' mathematical understanding.

Luminous Light, Angela Breitbach

Graduate Research Papers

Every school is searching for the key to a more successful curriculum, a curriculum that allows for quality learning and useful applications, a curriculum that will allow their students to grow into thinkers and problem solvers. The use of inquiry and constructivist based teaching methods seem to be the key to this type of curriculum. These ideas allow for better understanding of the concepts because the concepts are explored in a hands-on, minds-on setting fostering conceptual understanding as opposed to memorization. This also allows the concepts to be applied to different situations.

Using High-Order Questioning To Investigate Marine Animal Phyla, Tanya Conrad Jan 2006

Using High-Order Questioning To Investigate Marine Animal Phyla, Tanya Conrad

Graduate Research Papers

Over seventy percent of the Earth is covered in ocean, yet we know more about distant planets than we do about this vast body of water or the mysterious creatures that live within. Marine Biology is the study of the billions of plants and animals that live in the sea. Today, our understanding of marine organisms has allowed us to develop new sources of food, medicine, and solutions to environmental problems. Unfortunately for students living in Iowa, offerings of this type of course are usually limited to coastal regions. However, in 2000, Hempstead High School, in Dubuque, Iowa, created a …
