The sex pheromone of the scarab beetle, Phyllophaga anxia, is a blend of the methyl esters of two amino acids, L-valine and L-isoleucine. A field trapping study was conducted, deploying different blends of the two compounds at 59 locations in the United States and Canada. More than 57,000 males of 61 Phyllophaga species (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae) were captured and identified. Three major findings included: (1) widespread use of the two compounds [of the 147 Phyllophaga (sensu stricto) species found in the United States and Canada, males of nearly 40% were captured]; (2) in most species intraspecific male …

Understanding Psychological Control Through Differences Between Shame And Disappointment: Implications For Childhood Agression, Sacha Leah Bikhazi Nov 2006

Understanding Psychological Control Through Differences Between Shame And Disappointment: Implications For Childhood Agression, Sacha Leah Bikhazi

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the potentially unique roles that parental use of two psychological control dimensions, shame and disappointment, play in predicting children's relational and physical aggression. It was additionally of interest to investigate whether warm/involved parenting would moderate the effects of these forms of psychological control on both types of childhood aggression. Based on a review of literature, it was hypothesized that parental use of shame would positively predict aggression in children, whereas parental use of disappointment would not be significantly associated with childhood aggression. Additionally, it was hypothesized that warm, involved parenting would have …

Methods And Metrics For Human Control Of Multi-Robot Teams, Jeffrey D. Anderson Nov 2006

Methods And Metrics For Human Control Of Multi-Robot Teams, Jeffrey D. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

Human-controlled robots are utilized in many situations and such use is becoming widespread. This thesis details research that allows a single human to interact with a team of robots performing tasks that require cooperation. The research provides insight into effective interaction design methods and appropriate interface techniques. The use of team-level autonomy is shown to decrease human workload while simultaneously improving individual robot efficiency and robot-team cooperation. An indoor human-robot interaction testbed was developed at the BYU MAGICC Lab to facilitate experimentation. The testbed consists of eight robots equipped with wireless modems, a field on which the robots move, an …

Willa Cather: Male Roles And Self-Definition In My Antonia, The Professor's House, And "Neighbor Rosicky", Kristina Anne Everton

Theses and Dissertations

Gender roles are a tool used by society to set acceptable boundaries and ideals upon the sexes, and during the early part of the twentieth century in America those gender boundaries began to blur. As a result of the 19th Amendment, men must have felt their decreasing importance because women were no longer solely dependent upon them, and gender roles shifted as woman began to occupy territory that was traditionally held by men. The “New Woman" entered the workforce, and refused to accept traditional female gender conventions. In response to the “New Woman," Theodore Roosevelt and other leading males sought …

Tele-Cardiology Sensor Networks For Remote Ecg Monitoring, Meng Jiang Nov 2006

Tele-Cardiology Sensor Networks For Remote Ecg Monitoring, Meng Jiang

Theses

One of today’s most pressing matters in medical care is the response time to patients in need. The scope of this thesis is to suggest a solution that would help reduce response time in emergency situations utilizing wireless sensor networks technology. Wireless sensor network researches have recently gained unprecedented momentum in both industries and academia, especially its potential applications in Emergency Medical Services and Intensive Care Units. The enhanced power efficiency, minimized production cost, condensed physical layout, as well as reduced wired connections, presents a much more proficient and simplified approach to the continuous monitoring of patients’ physiological status. This …

Design Of A 14-Bit Fully Differential Discrete Time Delta-Sigma Modulator, Sumit Kumar Nathany Nov 2006

Design Of A 14-Bit Fully Differential Discrete Time Delta-Sigma Modulator, Sumit Kumar Nathany

Theses

Analog to digital converters play an essential role in modern mixed signal circuit design. Conventional Nyquist-rate converters require analog components that are precise and highly immune to noise and interference. In contrast, oversampling converters can be implemented using simple and high-tolerance analog components. Moreover, sampling at high frequency eliminates the need for abrupt cutoffs in the analog anti-aliasing filters. A noise shaping technique is also used in DS converters in addition to oversampling to achieve a high resolution conversion. A significant advantage of the method is that analog signals are converted using simple and high-tolerance analog circuits, usually a 1-bit …

Robot Rescue, Hui Yu Ruan

Theses

Recently, it is very common in Asia that people put little toys on their office desks. It doesn’t mean they sometimes have their kids visiting them nor they are not grown up yet. These are toys, which can soothe their stress from work. I am always attracted by toys and also animations designed or directed by many artists and designers. In this fantasy world of toys, there may not be only human beings. As in Hayao Miyazaki’s animation “Spirited Away,” where there was a magic world ruled by a witch; and there was also an old spider man, a frog …

Self-Localization In Ubiquitous Computing Using Sensor Fusion, Jeffrey Zampieron Nov 2006

Self-Localization In Ubiquitous Computing Using Sensor Fusion, Jeffrey Zampieron

Theses

The widespread availability of small and inexpensive mobile computing devices and the desire to connect them at any time in any place has driven the need to develop an accurate means of self-localization. Devices that typically operate outdoors use GPS for localization. However, most mobile computing devices operate not only outdoors but indoors where GPS is typically unavailable. Therefore, other localization techniques must be used. Currently, there are several commercially available indoor localization systems. However, most of these systems rely on specialized hardware which must be installed in the mobile device as well as the building of operation. The deployment …

Learning Objects: The Return Of The “Visual” To Active Learning?, Pandeli Glavanis Dr.

Faculty Journal Articles

In a recent issue of New Chalk Talk (Vol.6, Issue 2) I relied upon John Berger’s pioneering work Ways of Seeing, (1972) in order to suggest the primacy of “visual texts” in the learning relationship and especially with regard to our continuous concern, as educators and facilitators of the learning process, to enhance critical thinking and self-learning.

Negative Conductance Power Amplifier, Vladimir I. Prodanov Nov 2006

Negative Conductance Power Amplifier, Vladimir I. Prodanov

Electrical Engineering

Power amplifiers are disclosed that demonstrate improved linearity and efficiency in applications requiring significant peak-to-average ratios (PAR). A power amplifier in accordance with the present invention comprises a first transistor in an input stage that converts DC power into AC power; and a second transistor in a negative conductance stage that has a current-voltage characteristic with at least two slopes. The at least two slopes of the current-voltage characteristic are separated by a break point that may be controlled. The power amplifier may also include a non-dissipative two-port device that has two AC ports. The non-dissipative two-port device has a …
