Spectroscopic Characterisation And Biological Applications Of Organotin(Iv) Derivatives Of 3-(N-Naphthylaminocarbonyl)-2-Propenoic Acid, Sajjad Ahmad, Moazzam H. Bhatti, Saqib Ali, Fiaz Ahmed
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
In an effort to develop new organotin materials for investigation and biocidal evaluation, a series of compounds with the general formula R_{4 - n}SnL_n (where R = CH_3, n-C_4H_9, C_6H_5, C_6H_5CH_2 and L = 3-(N-naphthylaminocarbonyl)-2-propenoic acid) were synthesised, and characterised by elemental analysis, IR, multinuclear (^1H, ^{13}C and ^{119}Sn) NMR, ^{119m}Sn Mössbauer spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The biological activity of these compounds against various bacteria and fungi was investigated. All of the compounds were active against the fungi tested with a few exceptions. These compounds also showed significant antibacterial activity. LD_{50} data show that the investigated compounds have significant toxicity.

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A series of five-coordinated germanium-substituted tricyclohexylantimony dipropionates have been synthesized and characterized by different instrumental techniques, such as elemental analyses, FT-IR, multinuclear NMR (^1H, ^{13}C) and mass spectrometry. These compounds have also been screened against different microbes and they showed good activity against different bacteria that was comparable to the reference drugs. The crystal structure of the precursor (C_6H_{11})_3SbBr_2 is reported here, which showed that the antimony atom in an asymmetric unit exists in trigonal bipyramidal geometry, having space group C2/c with the monoclinic crystal system.

The Gender Of A College Of Science Laboratory Bench, Lauren Ford
The Gender Of A College Of Science Laboratory Bench, Lauren Ford
Student Work
Oftentimes everyday objects in our environment have gendered implications that go unnoticed and unobserved. These objects may or may not have been designed with a specific gender statement in mind, however careful analysis can reveal a great deal about the gendered nature of a commonplace artifact. Such an object that I encounter in each day of my life at the Rochester Institute of Technology is a laboratory bench. This artifact, I feel, is a prime example of an everyday object that has unnoticed gender implications – about myself and my colleagues. This bench, located in the teaching laboratory room 1125 …

Discovering Weak Community Structures In Large Biological Networks , Jianhua Ruan, Weixiong Zhang
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
Identifying intrinsic structures in large networks is a fundamental problem in many fields, such as biology, engineering and social sciences. Motivated by biology applications, in this paper we are concerned with identifying community structures, which are densely connected sub-graphs, in large biological networks. We address several critical issues for finding community structures. First, biological networks directly constructed from experimental data often contain spurious edges and may also miss genuine connections. As a result, community structures in biological networks are often weak. We introduce simple operations to capture local neighborhood structures for identifying weak communities. Second, we consider the issue of …

Integration Without Unification: An Argument For Pluralism In The Biological Sciences, Michael Dietrich, Sandra D. Mitchell
Integration Without Unification: An Argument For Pluralism In The Biological Sciences, Michael Dietrich, Sandra D. Mitchell
Dartmouth Scholarship
In this article, we consider the tension between unification and pluralism in biological theory. We begin with a consideration of historical efforts to establish a unified understanding of evolution in the neo-Darwinian synthesis. The fragmentation of the evolutionary synthesis by molecular evolution suggests the limitations of the general unificationist ideal for biology but not necessarily for integrating explanations. In the second half of this article, we defend a specific variety of pluralism that allows for the integration required for explanations of complex phenomena without unification on a large scale.
Agrobacterium Tumefaciens-Mediated Transformation Of Tobacco (Nicotiana Tabacum L.) Leaf Disks: Evaluation Of The Co-Cultivation Conditions To Increase Beta-Glucuronidase Gene Activity, Sunjung Park
LSU Master's Theses
Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation is generally used for genetic transformation of higher plants. Several experimental factors important for the increase of beta-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene activity were evaluated in this study using leaf disks of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. Xanthi). We found that co-cultivation temperature at 20C is the most critical factor to obtain the reproducible enhancement of GUS activity. pCAMBIA 1305.01 resulted in higher GUS activity than the other two pCAMBIA vectors 1301 and 1305.02. The highest GUS activity and transformation efficiency were achieved under the following experimental conditions: Agrobacterium tumefaciens strain LBA4404 containing pCAMBIA1305.01 was grown overnight at …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Androthrips ramachandrai Karny is an exotic thrips, assumed to be predacious, and is associated with gall-inducing thrips. It was first reported in the U.S. from FL, and intercepted in CA from Thailand in 2002. We surveyed Ficus spp. with Gynaikothrips-induced galls in AL, CA, FL, HI, LA, MS, and TX, and document that A. ramachandrai is now established in CA, FL, HI, and TX. It probably has been spread by the ornamental horticulture industry. We outline its biology and compare it to a congener A. flavipes, a documented thrips predator. Androthrips ramachandrai has the potential to be a …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations
We have developed a new unifying tight-binding theory that can account for the electronic properties of recently proposed Si-based nanostructures, namely, Si graphene-like sheets and Si nanotubes. We considered the sp2s* and sp3 models up to first- and second-nearest neighbors, respectively. Our results show that the corresponding Si nanotubes follow the so-called Hamada's rule. Comparison to a recent ab initio calculation is made.

Self-Injury: An Analysis Of The Behavior, Causes, And Effective Treatments, Lindsey Huyser
Honors Program Theses
Society has also become obsessed with the quest for a perfect body (Lader & Conterio, 1998). Often, this causes great damage for the self-esteem of women because they are pressured to live up to these high expectations. Self-injury is a way to make women feel better. There has been a rise in women working outside of the home as well, making latchkey children a normal occurrence. Children are often home by themselves when they return from school in today's world, which leaves them with nobody to talk to when problems arise. Self-injury can become a way to heal these issues.

Assessment Of Damage And Yield Losses On Maize By The Lepidopterans Chilo Partellus (Crambidae), Busseolafusca (Noctuidae) And Sesamia Calamistis (Noctuidae), Etabale Akhusama
All Master’s Theses
Lepidopteran stem borers are among field insect pests responsible for the low maize production in sub-Saharan Africa. In Kenya, Chilo partellus Swinhoe (Pyralidae), Busseola fusca Fuller (Noctuidae) and Sesamia calamistis Hampson (Noctuidae) constitute the major proportion of stemborer community. Concerted efforts to reduce stemborer populations in maize fields have been emphasized without a good understanding of potential losses associated with damage by respective stemborer species. This study aimed at assessing larval effects of the three stemborers on maize growth and how these relate to yield losses. A field experiment was initiated with both .stemborer species (B. fusca, S. calamistis and …

Evolutionary Genetics Of The Family Placobranchidae (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Opisthobranchia: Sacoglossa), Anna Lee Bass
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Members of the family Placobranchidae have been the focus of numerous studies because of their interesting physiological adaptations (kleptochemistry and kleptoplasty) and ecological associations with marine algae. More than 100 species have been described since the 1800's, but no determination of phylogenetic relationships in the family has occurred. DNA sequences from two mitochondrial genes (large subunit ribosomal and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I) and one nuclear gene (Histone 3) were used to reconstruct relationships among 34 nominal species within the Placobranchidae. Strong support for terminal nodes was found using Bayesian phylogenetic methods; however, a "soft" polytomy was detected at internal …

Revisiting The Legal Link Between Genetics And Crime, Deborah W. Denno

Unwarranted constraints on the admissibility of genetics evidence in death penalty cases can undercut some defendants' efforts to fight their executions. For example, genetics evidence can help validate some traditionally accepted mitigating factors (such as certain psychiatric or behavioral disorders) that can otherwise be difficult for defendants to prove. By imposing unreasonable limitations on genetics arguments, the criminal justice system may be undermining the very principles and progressive thinking the cap on genetics evidence was originally intended to achieve. Part II of this article briefly reviews the facts and legal arguments in Mobley v. State. Part III addresses the primary …

Cultivation Of Methanogens From Shallow Marine Sediments At Hydrate Ridge, Orego, Melissa Kendall, David R. Boone
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Little is known about the methanogenic degradation of acetate, the fate of molecular hydrogen and formate or the ability of methanogens to grow and produce methane in cold, anoxic marine sediments. The microbes that produce methane were examined in permanently cold, anoxic marine sediments at Hydrate Ridge (44°35' N, 125°10' W, depth 800 m). Sediment samples (15 to 35 cm deep) were collected from areas of active methane ebullition or areas where methane hydrates occurred. The samples were diluted into enrichment medium with formate, acetate or trimethylamine as catabolic substrate. After 2 years of incubation at 4 °C to 15 …

Contraception may provide a useful nonlethal management tool to reduce wild bird populations. We tested the efficacy of nicarbazin (NCZ) as a contraceptive for waterfowl and assessed health effects of NCZ, using domestic mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) as a model for Canada geese (Branta canadensis). Mallards were given gelatin capsules containing 0, 8.5, 17.0, or 33.75 mg of NCZ/kg of BW perorally once daily for 14 d. Fecal 4,4′- dinitrocarbanilide (DNC) and fluorescein were evaluated as potential markers of plasma and egg DNC levels. Plasma, egg, and fecal DNC levels differed among treatment groups in a dose …

Molecular Effects Of Nicarbazin On Avian Reproduction, C. A. Yoder, J. K. Graham, L. A. Miller
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Nicarbazin (NCZ) is an anticoccidial drug routinely used in the poultry industry that can negatively affect reproduction by reducing egg production, egg weight, and egg hatchability. The molecular mechanisms by which NCZ affects reproduction are unknown. Lipoprotein lipase, vitellogenin, transglutaminase, and calcium are all involved in egg formation and embryogenesis. Therefore, in vitro assays were used to evaluate 4 potential mechanisms of action of NCZ on egg formation and embryogenesis. First, a lipoprotein lipase assay was conducted to determine if NCZ increases lipoprotein lipase activity. Second, vitellogenin phosphorylation was evaluated to determine if NCZ acts as a vitellogenin phosphatase. Third, …
