Next Year In Jerusalem: A 21st Century, Medieval Pilgrimage Site, Mark Fafard Jan 2006

Next Year In Jerusalem: A 21st Century, Medieval Pilgrimage Site, Mark Fafard

All Volumes (2001-2008)

American Protestantism is generally regarded as scripturalist and lacking in such features as Passion plays and pilgrimage. The Holy Land Experience is an Orlando based Christian attraction that includes characteristics of both modern and medieval pilgrimage sites. In addition to the publicized Christian theme, an underlying yet equal message of Jewish heritage is pronounced within several of the park’s attributes. One dimension of this is that it serves as a substitutional pilgrimage; that is, an alternative to traveling to war torn Israel. This ethnography provides an emic perspective of the Holy Land Experience to hypothesize that it is a Christian …

Calorie Restriction Enhances Longevity Without Reducing Lifetime Fecundity Or Glucose Titers In Female Lubber Grasshoppers, Sean M. Wells, Iris Cynthia Allen, Erin Fuller, Stephen Melnyk, John Quattrochi Jan 2006

Calorie Restriction Enhances Longevity Without Reducing Lifetime Fecundity Or Glucose Titers In Female Lubber Grasshoppers, Sean M. Wells, Iris Cynthia Allen, Erin Fuller, Stephen Melnyk, John Quattrochi

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Calorie restriction, under eating while avoiding malnutrition, enhances longevity in many organisms, in part by delaying fecundity or lowering blood glucose. Calorie restriction begun at middle-age can also enhance longevity. We tested four diets on longevity of female lubber grasshoppers: ad libitum (free access to food), calorie restriction (60% or 71% of ad libitum), and delayed calorie restriction (60% after day 50). Constant calorie restriction increased longevity in grasshoppers by at least 66%. These diets lowered body mass, but it did not reduce lifetime fecundity or chronically lower blood glucose levels. Calorie restriction reduced the levels of stored protein after …

Judicial Ethics, The Appearance Of Impropriety, And The Proposed New Aba Judicial Code, Ronald D. Rotunda Jan 2006

Judicial Ethics, The Appearance Of Impropriety, And The Proposed New Aba Judicial Code, Ronald D. Rotunda

Hofstra Law Review

We sometimes think, loosely, that ethics is good and that therefore more is better than less. But more is not better than less, if the more exacts higher costs, measured in terms of vague rules that impose unnecessary and excessive burdens. Overly-vague ethics rules impose costs on the judicial system and the litigants, which we should weigh when determining whether to impose ill-defined and indefinite ethics prohibitions on judges. Unnecessarily imprecise ethics rules allow and tempt critics, with minimum effort, to levy a plausible and serious charge that the judge has violated the ethics rules. Overuse not only invites abuse …

Cortisol Concentrations In Human Skeletal Muscle Tissue After Phonophoresis With 10% Hydrocortisone Gel, Amanda R. Kuntz, Christine Multer Griffiths, James M. Rankin, Charles W. Armstrong, Thomas J. Mcloughlin

Biology Faculty Articles

CONTEXT: The delivery of hydrocortisone through phonophoresis is a widely prescribed technique for the treatment of various musculoskeletal inflammatory conditions. However, limited scientific evidence exists to support the efficacy of phonophoresis in delivering hydrocortisone to skeletal muscle tissue in humans.

OBJECTIVE: To determine hydrocortisone (cortisol) concentrations in human skeletal muscle tissue after a phonophoresis treatment using 10% hydrocortisone gel.

DESIGN: Randomized design in which 12 subjects were randomly assigned to either an ultrasound (sham) treatment or a 10% hydrocortisone phonophoresis treatment.

SETTING: Laboratory.

PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: Twelve healthy subjects (8 women, 4 men: age = 22.3 +/- 2.64 years, …

Toxin-Producing Microcystis Aeruginosa: A Trade-Off In The Vertical Distribution Of Three Daphnia Species As Predicted By The Ideal Free Distribution With Costs Model, Sonya Claudine Carlson Jan 2006

Toxin-Producing Microcystis Aeruginosa: A Trade-Off In The Vertical Distribution Of Three Daphnia Species As Predicted By The Ideal Free Distribution With Costs Model, Sonya Claudine Carlson

Master's Theses and Capstones

Daphnia hyalina, D. galeata, and D. ambigua were exposed to the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa in 30 cm temperature-stratified columns. Changes in egg ratio, lipid index, length, and growth were recorded over 3 day experiments. Spatial distributions were recorded during 6-hour constant light experiments and 3 day fluctuating light experiments. D. hyalina and D. galeata stayed in the upper half of the column in temperatures of 18--22°C when exposed to M. aeruginosa. D. ambigua remained between 10--19°C regardless of food type. For across all experiments, depth and temperature ranges were narrowest in treatments with M. aeruginosa. D. ambigua incurred costs to …

Effects Of Forest Clear Cutting On Spotted Salamander ( Ambystoma Maculatum) Migration, Jessica Susannah Veysey Jan 2006

Effects Of Forest Clear Cutting On Spotted Salamander ( Ambystoma Maculatum) Migration, Jessica Susannah Veysey

Master's Theses and Capstones

Upland buffer zones are a proposed management tool for vernal-pool-breeding amphibians. Substantial validation of buffers, via experimental upland habitat disturbance, is lacking. Specifically, no studies have examined immediate effects of clear cutting on spotted salamander (Ambystoma maculatum ) migration. I used clear cutting to experimentally manipulate upland buffer widths at 11 vernal pools. I then radiotracked 40 adult spotted salamanders at these pools, and modeled their migration with mixed-effects regression. Mean maximum distance from the pool was 106.0 +/- 15.4 m (range = 1.6 to 427.6 m). At clear cut-treatment pools, mean percent of time in the cut was 27.2 …

Mhc (B) Complex Recombinant Immune Response, Nicole Gay Wilkinson Jan 2006

Mhc (B) Complex Recombinant Immune Response, Nicole Gay Wilkinson

Master's Theses and Capstones

Recombination between chicken major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I B-F and class IV B-G genes has enabled more precise identification of genes controlling immune responses. Congenic lines, each containing a unique MHC recombinant, were developed with 99.9% genetic uniformity to inbred Line UCD 003 (B17B17). A new recombinant, R13 (BF17-BG23), originated in the tenth backcross generation for R1 (BF24-BG23). Two experiments tested the R13 immune response to bovine red blood .cells (BRBC) and Rous sarcoma virus (RSV).

A single R13B17 sire mated to five R131317 dams produced progeny segregating for R13R13, R13B17, and B17B17 genotypes. These progeny were injected with …

Salmonella Enterica Serovar Typhimurium Promotes Apoptosis In Activated Neutrophils, Christopher C. Wrocklage Jan 2006

Salmonella Enterica Serovar Typhimurium Promotes Apoptosis In Activated Neutrophils, Christopher C. Wrocklage

Master's Theses and Capstones

Apoptosis is an extremely important and highly regulated function in neutrophils. As the most abundant, but shortest-lived white blood cells, they must initiate this process in the absence of pathogens and selectively release their potent cytotoxic components when pathogens are present. Many pathogens are able to modulate this process in neutrophils, either for the host's benefit or for their own. Previous work has shown that transmigration across a T84 intestinal epithelial crypt cell monolayer increases the ability of neutrophils to bind and kill Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium).

The goal of this work was to see how S. Typhimurium …

A Comparison Of The First Fifty Words Of Typically Developing Children To The First Fifty Words Of Typically Developing Children Exposed To Manual Communication, Emily Woodacre Jan 2006

A Comparison Of The First Fifty Words Of Typically Developing Children To The First Fifty Words Of Typically Developing Children Exposed To Manual Communication, Emily Woodacre

Master's Theses and Capstones

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the role of manual communication in the acquisition of the first 50 spoken words in typically-developing children. It was hypothesized that typically-developing children exposed to manual communication would have a different composition of their first 50 words compared to typically-developing children not exposed to manual communication. More specifically a greater portion of dual-functioning words and action words were predicted as a result of the visual and motor aspects of gestures and manual communication.

Twelve participants who were enrolled in a six-week baby-sign playgroup were involved in the study. Parents recorded their …

The Role Of Osmolyte Transporters And Heat Shock Proteins In Adaptation Of Atlantic Salmon To Selected Stressors, Jacques Zarate Jan 2006

The Role Of Osmolyte Transporters And Heat Shock Proteins In Adaptation Of Atlantic Salmon To Selected Stressors, Jacques Zarate

Open Access Dissertations

The effects of hyperosmotic and husbandry related stress on Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and the mechanisms employed in response were investigated. To assess the role of taurine and betaine transport proteins in contending with hyperosmotic stress, a cDNA encoding the salmon taurine transporter was cloned. Exposure of various isolated tissues to hyperosmotic stress led to a 2 to 5 fold increase in taurine transporter mRNA. The transfer of juvenile salmon to seawater in October elicited a similar response. Supplementation of culture media with taurine failed to reduce mortality or alleviate a hyperosmotic induced decrease in protein synthesis in isolated tissues. …

The Contributions Of Murine Kc And Mip-2 In Hemorrhage Induced Neutrophil Priming For Acute Lung Injury Following Subsequent Septic Challenge, Joanne Lomas-Neira Jan 2006

The Contributions Of Murine Kc And Mip-2 In Hemorrhage Induced Neutrophil Priming For Acute Lung Injury Following Subsequent Septic Challenge, Joanne Lomas-Neira

Open Access Dissertations

Trauma patients represent a significant risk for the development of ALI following exposure to a secondary infectious challenge. This risk is suggested to be associated with an event that "primes" certain members of the immune cell population such that a subsequent/secondary challenge elicits a dys-functional response. Characteristics of ALI are neutrophil sequestration in the lung, delayed neutrophil apoptosis and increased pro-inflammatory cytokines. Chemokines are proteins produced by immune and resident tissue cells in response to inflammation and function as regulators of neutrophil trafficking and cytolytic activity. Keratinocyte-derived chemokine (KC) and macrophage inflammatory protein-2 (MIP-2) are mouse homologues of human neutrophil …

Requirement Of Integrin α5β1 And Tyrosine Phosphorylation Of Shc For Prohb-Egf Release By Gpr30, A Seven Transmembrane Receptor For Estrogen, Jeffrey Alan Quinn Jan 2006

Requirement Of Integrin α5β1 And Tyrosine Phosphorylation Of Shc For Prohb-Egf Release By Gpr30, A Seven Transmembrane Receptor For Estrogen, Jeffrey Alan Quinn

Open Access Dissertations

Estrogen acts via a seven transmembrane receptor (7TMR), GPR30, to stimulate an HB-EGF autocrine loop. Here, evidence is provided that integrin α5β1 is a necessary transmembrane signaling intermediary required for matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-mediated release of proHB-EGF by GPR30. Estrogen stimulation of human SKBR3 breast cancer cells, which lack ERα and ERβ, resulted in recruitment of integrin α5β1 to focal adhesions, formation of actin stress fibers, and assembly of fibronectin (FN) fibrils. Expression of a GPR30 mutant in SKBR3 cells selectively abrogated FN matrix assembly and EGFR tyrosine phosphorylation by estrogen. Disruption of cytoskeletal integrity or inhibition of integrin α5β1 with …

A Psychology Of Emotional Legal Decision Making: Revulsion And Saving Face In Legal Theory And Practice, Peter H. Huang, Christopher J. Anderson Jan 2006

A Psychology Of Emotional Legal Decision Making: Revulsion And Saving Face In Legal Theory And Practice, Peter H. Huang, Christopher J. Anderson

Publications

Professor Martha C. Nussbaum is an accomplished scholar in an impressive variety of fields. Drawing on her diverse academic backgrounds, Nussbaum has written extensively about emotions and their importance for law from the perspective of her primary specialty, philosophy. Her book Hiding from Humanity criticizes the roles that two particular emotions, disgust and shame, play in the law. Its central thesis is that, as legal actors, we should be wary of disgust and shame because indulging in those emotions allows us to hide from our humanity - both our humanity in the general sense and also those specific features of …
