Toward A Genealogy Of Aryan Morality: Nietzsche And Jacolloit, Thomas Paul Bonfiglio Jan 2006

Toward A Genealogy Of Aryan Morality: Nietzsche And Jacolloit, Thomas Paul Bonfiglio

Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications

While Nietzsche’s writings of the late 1880s reveal waxing interests in Hinduism, Sanskrit philology, Aryan culture, and the related Indo-European hypothesis, these interests have been remarkably understudied by Nietzsche scholarship, with the exception of a scant few articles that have recently appeared. The presence of the aforementioned topics was crucial for the configuration of the works written in 1887 and 1888: On the Genealogy of Morality, The Twilight of the Idols, and The Antichrist, as well as for some of the notions at hand in Nietzsche’s correspondence with Heinrich Köselitz, but the provenance of the ideas that …

Are We Responsible For Our Emotions And Moods?, Michael Schleifer, Miriam S. Mccormick Jan 2006

Are We Responsible For Our Emotions And Moods?, Michael Schleifer, Miriam S. Mccormick

Philosophy Faculty Publications

The short answer to the question in the title of this paper is "yes." Our thesis is that we are indeed responsible for our emotions and moods. We want to help children understand that just as they are responsible for what they do and say, or omit to do or say (along with the consequences of these acts), so are they responsible for much of their affective life. What remains is to explain what we mean by "responsibility," "emotions," and "moods."

Zinc Content In The Organs And Tissues Of Freshwater Fish From The Kardjali And Studen Kladenets Dam Lakes In Bulgaria, Iliana G. Velcheva

Turkish Journal of Zoology

A study was conducted to estimate zinc loads in the organs and tissues of Alburnus alburnus, Cyprinus carpio and Perca fluviatilis inhabiting 2 dam lakes Kardjali and Studen Kladenets, located along the Arda river (South Bulgaria). The zinc content was determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry using a Perkin Elmer 380 B apparatus .The effect of the temporal factor was proved over a 3-year study. The highest zinc concentrations in fish organs and tissues were detected in summer and autumn. The highest zinc loads were found in the kidney and liver, and the lowest in the muscles of the 3 fish …

Gis And 3d Analysis Applied To Sea Turtle Mortalities And Navigation Channel Dredging, Bradley A. Shellito, Keith B. Lockwood Jan 2006

Gis And 3d Analysis Applied To Sea Turtle Mortalities And Navigation Channel Dredging, Bradley A. Shellito, Keith B. Lockwood

Virginia Journal of Science

Between 2000 and 2003 there were an increased number of documented sea turtle mortalities related to hopper dredging in the channels of the Chesapeake Bay. A pilot study was undertaken to create a bathymetric surface and three-dimensional model of the Cape Henry Channel using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as a visualization tool to examine sea turtle mortalities in relation to the dredging. In Fall 2003, the US Army Corps of Engineers dredged the Thimble Shoals Federal Navigation Channel, and a more refined model was developed using this data. This project examines the growing concerns over sea turtle mortality rates and …

The Cult Of Love, Michal Paul Jan 2006

The Cult Of Love, Michal Paul

All Volumes (2001-2008)

There can be no doubt that romantic love is, at a minimum, a cultural preoccupation; arguably, it closer resembles a frenzied obsession. Love is the subject of song lyrics, television shows, films, books, watercooler conversation, gossip, scandal, historic tragedy, and uncountable daydreams and fantasies. Type “romantic love” into a Google search and you will retrieve over 4,570,000 hits for websites featuring the topic. We even recognize a national holiday in its honor. Certainly one could say that love is an ultimate concern in American culture. Just how deep, though, is our devotion to its tenets? I argue that people live …

Working In The Best Interest Of Children: Facilitating The Collaboration Of Lawyers And Social Workers In Abuse And Neglect Cases, Mary Kay Kisthardt Jan 2006

Working In The Best Interest Of Children: Facilitating The Collaboration Of Lawyers And Social Workers In Abuse And Neglect Cases, Mary Kay Kisthardt

Faculty Works

Working in the best interest of children in abuse and neglect cases is a daunting task for both lawyers and social workers. The legal system is inadequate to meet the myriad needs of children and families in crisis. Yet only under the authority of the legal system can social work and other mental health professions intervene in families on behalf of children. The juvenile court system has been buffeted historically by the competing values and methods of social work and law. The institution and its rules are still evolving today. This dynamic environment means that even if competition for "ownership" …

Blessed Are, Jason Martinez Jan 2006

Blessed Are, Jason Martinez

Theses

On the surface this particular novel is a fairly simple one to explain. On the surface this novel is more or less a romance novel. After all, Book One is essentially about a man named Thomas Woods who meets and fall in love with a woman named Rosemary. At first his love is returned in kind, but by the end he has lost his lover to another man, a man unworthy of her tenderness. And Book Two is about more or less the same thing except in this Book the woman's name is Violet, and there is a slight question …

Capturing Ideas: Copyright And The Law Of First Possession, Abraham Drassinower

Cleveland State Law Review

Part II of this paper, entitled “Wish and Deed,” sets forth an account of the law of first possession through an analysis of the classic case of Pierson v. Post. Part III, entitled “Idea and Expression,” briefly sets forth an account of the idea/expression dichotomy in copyright law through discussion of the classic case of Nichols v. Universal Pictures Corporation. On that basis, Part III unfolds a correspondence between animus and factum in property law and idea and expression in copyright law. Part IV, entitled “Things and Speech,” suggests through discussion of the classic case of Feist that central doctrines …

Characterization Of Hard2, A Processed Hard1 Gene Duplicate, Encoding A Human Protein N-Alpha-Acetyltransferase., Thomas Arnesen, Matthew J Betts, Frédéric Pendino, David A Liberles, Dave Anderson, Jaime Caro, Xianguo Kong, Jan E Varhaug, Johan R Lillehaug

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Protein acetylation is increasingly recognized as an important mechanism regulating a variety of cellular functions. Several human protein acetyltransferases have been characterized, most of them catalyzing epsilon-acetylation of histones and transcription factors. We recently described the human protein acetyltransferase hARD1 (human Arrest Defective 1). hARD1 interacts with NATH (N-Acetyl Transferase Human) forming a complex expressing protein N-terminal alpha-acetylation activity. RESULTS: We here describe a human protein, hARD2, with 81 % sequence identity to hARD1. The gene encoding hARD2 most likely originates from a eutherian mammal specific retrotransposition event. hARD2 mRNA and protein are expressed in several human cell lines. …

Death Bed, Deborah W. Denno Jan 2006

Death Bed, Deborah W. Denno

Faculty Scholarship

Lethal injection is this country's primary method of execution, adopted for use by all but one of the thirty-seven death penalty states, as well as the federal government. It is predictable, then, that questions would arise the moment such a widely accepted form of punishment becomes especially vulnerable to an Eighth Amendment attack, as recent cases have shown. This article discusses this author's involvement as an expert in one of these cases, Baze v. Rees, which concerned a 2005 challenge to the constitutionality of lethal injection in Kentucky. While the Baze court upheld the constitutionality of Kentucky's lethal injection procedure, …

In Vitro Effects Of Some Antibiotic Drugs On Bovine Lactoperoxidase Enzyme, Murat Çankaya, Melda Şi̇şeci̇oğlu, Özgür Yörük, Hasan Özdemi̇r

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Aim: Owing to the widespread use of antibiotic drugs in both human and animals, we thought it would be important to determine the effect of these on lactoperoxidase (LPO; E.C. 1.11.1.7) activity during lactation. The in vitro effects of gentamicin sulfate and ampicillin sodium drugs on bovine LPO enzyme activity in breast-milk were investigated. Materials and Methods: LPO was purified with Amberlite CG 50 resin, CM Sephadex C-50 ion-exchange chromatography, and Sephadex G-100 gel filtration chromatography from skimmed bovine milk. Rz(A412/A280) value for the purified LPO was found to be 0.8. Inhibition or activation effects of the drugs on LPO …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Myostatin, along with its binding protein follistatin, have been demonstrated to inhibit skeletal muscle development during embryonic and postnatal development, whereas IGF-1 has been reported to stimulate skeletal muscle development and overall growth. The objectives of the current study were to determine the expression profiles of myostatin and follistatin genes, and to evaluate the impact of in ovo administration of recombinant human insulin-like growth factor-1 (rhIGF-1) on these gene expression patterns during quail embryogenesis, with an emphasis on skeletal muscle development. Quail eggs were injected once with 100 ng rhIGF-1 in 10 mM acetic acid, 0.1% BSA per embryo on …

Influence Of Feeding Frequency On Feed Intake, Growth Performance And Nutrient Utilization In European Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus Labrax) Fed Pelleted Or Extruded Diets, Derya Güroy, Emrah Deveci̇ler, Betül Kut Güroy, Ahmet Adem Teki̇nay Jan 2006

Influence Of Feeding Frequency On Feed Intake, Growth Performance And Nutrient Utilization In European Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus Labrax) Fed Pelleted Or Extruded Diets, Derya Güroy, Emrah Deveci̇ler, Betül Kut Güroy, Ahmet Adem Teki̇nay

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In an 83-day-nutrition trial, effects of feed production technique and feeding frequency on feed intake, growth and nutrient utilization were determined in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). Three thousand six hundred fish (170 ± 2.6 g) were randomly allocated to experimental sea cages (approx. 5800 l) according to a 2 x 2 experimental plan [2 processing techniques: steam pelleted diet (P) vs. extruded diet (E); 2 feeding frequencies: twice (2) vs. 3 times (3)]. The P3 group consumed significantly (P < 0.05) more feed than the fish fed extruded diets, irrespective of feeding frequency. Growth rates of all groups did not display any significant difference (P > 0.05) in terms of final weight (FW) or specific growth rate (SGR), although there was a decreasing trend in final …

By-Catch In A 40 Mm Pe Demersal Trawl Codend, Yeli̇z Doğanyilmaz Özbi̇lgi̇n, Zafer Tosunoğlu, Hüseyi̇n Özbi̇lgi̇n

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Demersal trawling in Turkish waters yields a considerable amount of by-catch and discard. Data presented in this study were collected during a demersal trawl codend selectivity trial carried out on board the RV Egesüf (27 m, 500 HP) between August 9 and September 4, 2002, in İzmir Bay. In total, 52 species of fish and invertebrate from 40 mm nominal mesh size commercially used PE codend and 24 mm cover were identified, separately weighed, and classified as commercial and non-commercial. In addition, for red mullet (Mullus barbatus), hake (Merluccius merluccius), common pandora (Pagellus erythrinus), axillary sea bream (Pagellus acarne), annular …
