Effect Of Risk Factors On Functional Outcome After Stroke Rehabilitation, Mahmoud E. Nazzal, Mohammed A. Saadah, Suad M. Trebinjac, Omar A. Al-Awadi, Khalid A. Al-Shamsi Jan 2006

Effect Of Risk Factors On Functional Outcome After Stroke Rehabilitation, Mahmoud E. Nazzal, Mohammed A. Saadah, Suad M. Trebinjac, Omar A. Al-Awadi, Khalid A. Al-Shamsi

Neurosciences

OBJECTIVE: The incidence of stroke and the demand for rehabilitation services continues to increase. Risk factors may act as stroke outcome predictors and hence determine the type and intensity of rehabilitation. Our aim is to investigate stroke outcome predictors that will define groups with maximal or minimal benefit from rehabilitation after stroke. METHODS: Our longitudinal prospective study included 111 ischemic stroke patients, admitted consecutively to the Rehabilitation Department, Hamad Medical Corporation, Qatar, during 2000-2001. We analyzed the influence of modifiable risk factors: diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension (HTN), ischemic heart disease (IHD) and non-modifiable factors: age, gender, race and side of …

Effects Of Anterior Tibial Displacement On The Proprioceptive Functions Of Soccer Players’ Knee Joints, Cem Cetin, Rustu Guner, Burak Kunduracioglu, Bulent Ulkar

Neurosciences

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of joint laxity on proprioceptive functions of the knee joints of soccer players. METHODS: In this study, we measured anterior tibial displacements and thresholds to detect the knee joint passive motion of 20 healthy soccer players (18.1+/-1.6 years of age). We performed all the measurements in Autumn 2000 in Ankara, Turkey. We applied the Mann-Whitney U test to analyze the relationship between the anterior tibial displacement and threshold to detect the passive motion (TDPM). RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences between the TDPM values of the knee joints with insignificant laxity differences at different …

Homocystinemia And Stroke In Vegetarians, Mohammed A. Saadah, Mona C. Thakre, Loai M. Saadah, Mahmoud E. Nazzal Jan 2006

Homocystinemia And Stroke In Vegetarians, Mohammed A. Saadah, Mona C. Thakre, Loai M. Saadah, Mahmoud E. Nazzal

Neurosciences

Homocysteine is a sulfurated amino acid with a central role in the metabolism of thiol compounds. Homocystinemia is a recognized independent potentially remediable risk factor for vascular disease. It is associated with both macro and micro vascular ischemic stroke. It can often be normalized by polyvitamin therapy. This inexpensive and well-tolerated treatment is considered effective in decreasing the incidence of stroke. We report 2 young strict vegetarians with no known vascular risk factors. The first suffered a left middle cerebral artery infarct, and the second multiple bilateral small cerebral infarctions. Extensive investigations showed moderately elevated homocysteine and low serum B12 …

Prescribing Morality: The Constitutionality Of Pharmacist Conscience Clauses, Taylor Genovese Jan 2006

Prescribing Morality: The Constitutionality Of Pharmacist Conscience Clauses, Taylor Genovese

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Health provider "conscience clauses" were first enacted in response to the United States Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade and were specifically related to religious or moral objections to abortion. Generally, today's conscience clauses go well beyond the issue of abortion and provide "varying" levels of legal protection for health providers who refuse to perform services that are against their religious or moral beliefs.

This Note argues that legislation that provides an absolute right for pharmacists to refuse to fill valid prescriptions based on the pharmacist's religious or moral beliefs threatens the constitutionally protected right to access contraceptives if …

Osteonal Effects On Elastic Modulus And Fatigue Life In Equine Bone, V. A. Gibson, S. M. Stover, J. C. Gibeling, S. J. Hazelwood, R. B. Martin Jan 2006

Osteonal Effects On Elastic Modulus And Fatigue Life In Equine Bone, V. A. Gibson, S. M. Stover, J. C. Gibeling, S. J. Hazelwood, R. B. Martin

Biomedical Engineering

We hypothesized that recently formed, incompletely mineralized, and thus, relatively deformable osteons in the equine third metacarpus enhance in vitro load-controlled fatigue life in two ways. Macroscopically, there is a compliance effect, because reduced tissue elastic modulus diminishes the stress required to reach a given strain. Microscopically, there is a cement line effect, in which new osteons and their cement lines more effectively serve as barriers to crack propagation. We studied 18 4×10×100 mm beams from the medial, lateral, and dorsal cortices of metacarpal bones from 6 thoroughbred racehorses. Following load-controlled fatigue testing to fracture in 4 point bending, a …

Clark County School District Attitudes, Perceptions, Barriers, And Desires For Field Trip Experiences, Allison Brody Jan 2006

Clark County School District Attitudes, Perceptions, Barriers, And Desires For Field Trip Experiences, Allison Brody

Education about the Environment

Field trip opportunities are plentiful throughout Clark County, Nevada, including museums, parks, and designated locations within the nearly seven million acres of public lands surrounding the Las Vegas metropolitan area. The majority of these field trip destinations, which this paper will refer to as Informal Education (IE) sites, have education teams that can create and deliver programs and/or tours for classes. Many also offer professional development opportunities for teachers. Although the IE sites are rich in natural and cultural resources and provide abundant opportunities for authentic learning experiences, teachers may not think of some of the sites as prime destinations …

Finicky Fish Finish... Last! Pre-Visit Lessons -- Support Materials (Grade 5), Discover Mojave: Forever Earth Jan 2006

Finicky Fish Finish... Last! Pre-Visit Lessons -- Support Materials (Grade 5), Discover Mojave: Forever Earth

Curriculum materials (FE)

In “Finicky Fish Finish…Last!” students explore what has happened to the Colorado River and the reasons why it is so difficult for the razorback sucker to thrive in a changed environment. Working as ichthyologists (fish biologists) at Lake Mead, students collect water quality data such as temperature, pH, and clarity -- to determine whether current habitat conditions are sufficient for survival of young razorback suckers. Students observe and identify non-native fish in Lake Mead as they learn how the razorback sucker interacts with these neighbors. Students assess whether Lake Mead is still a good habitat for razorback suckers. Using the …

3-Pg Productivity Modeling Of Regenerating Amazon Forests: Climate Sensitivity And Comparison With Modis-Derived Npp, Joseph D. White, Neal A. Scott, Adam I. Hirsch, Steven W. Running Jan 2006

3-Pg Productivity Modeling Of Regenerating Amazon Forests: Climate Sensitivity And Comparison With Modis-Derived Npp, Joseph D. White, Neal A. Scott, Adam I. Hirsch, Steven W. Running

Ecosystem and Conservation Sciences Faculty Publications

Potential forest growth predicted by the Physiological Principles in Predicting Growth (3-PG) model was compared for forest and deforested areas in the Legal Amazon to assess potential differing regeneration associated with climate. Historical deforestation and regeneration have occurred in environmentally marginal areas that influence regional carbon sequestration estimates. Effects of El Niño–induced drought further reduce simulated production by decreasing soil water availability in areas with shallow soils and high transpiration potential. The model was calibrated through comparison of literature biomass and with satellite-based estimates. Net primary productivity (NPP) for mature Amazonian forests from the 3-PG model was positively correlated ( …

A Practical Look At The Variable Area Transect, Solomon Z. Dobrowski, Shannon K. Murphy Jan 2006

A Practical Look At The Variable Area Transect, Solomon Z. Dobrowski, Shannon K. Murphy

Forest Management Faculty Publications

The variable area transect (VAT) is a plotless density estimator that has received little attention in the ecological literature despite having potentially robust estimation properties. VAT allows for density estimations without the lengthy search times associated with other plotless density estimators. In spite of this, little has been written about the effect of varying transect widths on its density estimation properties or on the practical implementation of the VAT in field settings. An artificial population sampler was used to examine the effect of transect width on density estimates obtained using the VAT. Three transect widths were chosen corresponding to the …

Legal History Meets The Honors Program, Robert B. Bennett

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

In this article, the author discusses the "Law and Culture" course that he developed to teach in the Butler University Honors Program. The course looks at some landmark periods or events in legal history and explores how those events were the product of their culture, and how they affected their culture. Among the events or periods that the author has looked at in iterations of this course were the survival instinct on display in "Regina v. Dudley and Stephens," the Nuremberg trials, the Scopes Monkey Trial, the modern American litigation explosion, and the events surrounding the U.S. Supreme Court decision …

Roles Of Wrky Proteins In Mediating The Crosstalk Of Hormone Signaling Pathways: An Approach Integrating Bioinformatics And Experimental Biology, Zhen Xie Jan 2006

Roles Of Wrky Proteins In Mediating The Crosstalk Of Hormone Signaling Pathways: An Approach Integrating Bioinformatics And Experimental Biology, Zhen Xie

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The goal of my research is to understand the molecular mechanism by which hormones control seed germination. Gibberellins (GA) promote, while abscisic acid (ABA) and salicylic acid (SA) inhibit seed germination. Key molecules in these signaling pathways include receptors, secondary messengers, protein kinases and phosphatases, and transcription factors. My study focuses on how WRKY transcription factors modulate the expression of an alpha-amylase gene (Amy32b), which is up-regulated by GA, but down-regulated by ABA and SA in the aleurone cells of germinating seeds; Chapter 2 started with the annotation and phylogenetic analyses of the WRKY gene superfamily, followed by functional studies …

The study's objective is to test which of three presentation modalities (text, audio or text plus audio) leads to improved performance of older adults' learning health information. The total number of participants consisted of 16 males and 18 females, or a total of 34 participants. The mean age of the group was 72.5. The participants were divided into three groups and each group was presented with one of three modalities (i.e. text, text plus audio, and audio), selected randomly, on an "auto start" CD, using PowerPoint as a …

Air Exchange Rate In A Horse Trailer During Road Transport, Joseph L. Purswell, Richard S. Gates, Laurie M. Lawrence, Jamey D. Jacob, Timothy S. Stombaugh, Robert J. Coleman Jan 2006

Air Exchange Rate In A Horse Trailer During Road Transport, Joseph L. Purswell, Richard S. Gates, Laurie M. Lawrence, Jamey D. Jacob, Timothy S. Stombaugh, Robert J. Coleman

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Horses traveling by road commonly experience heat stress conditions and poor air quality, which may be caused by insufficient ventilation; however, there are few estimates of air exchange in a horse trailer during transport. Air exchange rate was measured at ten locations within a four-horse trailer (internal volume 18.5 m3) using tracer gas decay measurement to assess the adequacy of ventilation. Three vehicle speeds (13, 48, and 97 km h-1) and three window configurations (all windows and roof vents closed, all windows open, all windows open and roof vents open forward) were tested with and without …

A Winner Is Who? Fair Use And The Online Distribution Of Manga And Video Game Fan Translations, Jaime E. Muscar Jan 2006

A Winner Is Who? Fair Use And The Online Distribution Of Manga And Video Game Fan Translations, Jaime E. Muscar

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

This note examines the legality of fan translations of Japanese comic books, known as manga, and video games distributed over the Internet, with special consideration given to the application of the fair use doctrine. Technology related to the distribution of media online grows exponentially compared to the law governing this technology. Although much recent litigation has limited the online distribution of traditional media, both copyright holders and courts have largely ignored a fringe segment of this distribution. This fringe includes manga and video games. Manga can be easily shared online by scanning images, and video games are now frequently converted …

Integration Without Unification: An Argument For Pluralism In The Biological Sciences, Michael Dietrich, Sandra D. Mitchell Jan 2006

Integration Without Unification: An Argument For Pluralism In The Biological Sciences, Michael Dietrich, Sandra D. Mitchell

Dartmouth Scholarship

In this article, we consider the tension between unification and pluralism in biological theory. We begin with a consideration of historical efforts to establish a unified understanding of evolution in the neo-Darwinian synthesis. The fragmentation of the evolutionary synthesis by molecular evolution suggests the limitations of the general unificationist ideal for biology but not necessarily for integrating explanations. In the second half of this article, we defend a specific variety of pluralism that allows for the integration required for explanations of complex phenomena without unification on a large scale.

Does The U.S. Constitution Need An Equal Rights Amendment?, Lisa Baldez, Lee Epstein, Andrew D. Martin Jan 2006

Does The U.S. Constitution Need An Equal Rights Amendment?, Lisa Baldez, Lee Epstein, Andrew D. Martin

Dartmouth Scholarship

For over 3 decades, those engaged in the battle over the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), along with many scholarly commentators, have argued that ratification of the amendment will lead U.S. courts (1) to elevate the standard of law they now use to adjudicate claims of sex discrimination, which, in turn, could lead them (2) to find in favor of parties claiming a denial of their rights. We investigate both possibilities via an examination of constitutional sex discrimination litigation in the 50 states—over a third of which have adopted ERAs. Employing methods especially developed for this investigation, we find no direct …

Transposable Elements: What Have You Done For Me Lately? A Genomics Based Investigation Into The Potential Functional Roles Of Transposable Elements Using The Model Organism Caenorhabditis Elegans, Sarah Prescott Kenick Jan 2006

Transposable Elements: What Have You Done For Me Lately? A Genomics Based Investigation Into The Potential Functional Roles Of Transposable Elements Using The Model Organism Caenorhabditis Elegans, Sarah Prescott Kenick

Doctoral Dissertations

The genomes of all organisms contain discrete DNA sequences present as disperse repetitive elements called transposons. Transposons have the unique ability to move to new chromosomal locations. Problems of uncontrolled movement of transposons can result in mutations, rearrangement, and even broken chromosomes. Often termed "selfish parasites" that invade a host genome, there is a longstanding question of whether they have a functional role. As a first step in an effort to investigate this question, I identified and annotated 276 full length and partial elements in the C.elegans genome. I determined the genomic location of each and looked for patterns resulting …

Relationship Between Discontinuation Of Anti-Depressant Medication During Pregnancy And Development Of Postpartum Depression, Maria Palombo Murphy Jan 2006

Relationship Between Discontinuation Of Anti-Depressant Medication During Pregnancy And Development Of Postpartum Depression, Maria Palombo Murphy

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a serious and potentially debilitating disorder that frequently goes undetected due to stigma and a lack of understanding about its course and etiology. The factor of particular interest to this study concerns the relationship between discontinuation of anti-depressant medication in pregnancy and the development of PPD. The study examined how the variables of pregnancy mood, child care stress, emotional support, instrumental support, marital satisfaction, history of depression, baby temperament, birth experience, and medication status affect symptoms of postpartum depression (PPD) in a sample of 202 patients at the six-week postpartum check-up. In addition to a demographic …

Causing Death For Compassionate Reasons In American Law, Richard Kay Jan 2006

Causing Death For Compassionate Reasons In American Law, Richard Kay

Faculty Articles and Papers

This essay, a revised version of the United States report on Euthanasia to be presented at the XVII International Congress of Comparative Law, surveys the state of the law, both decisional and statutory, on the permissibility of compassionately motivated actions to terminate human life. It deals with a range of legal categories: suicide, attempted suicide, euthanasia, assisted suicide and the termination of life-sustaining treatment. It highlights the deeply ambivalent attitudes held toward these actions in contemporary America and how this ambivalence has resulted in obscure and artificial distinctions.

It's Not About The Fox: The Untold History Of Pierson V. Post, Bethany Berger Jan 2006

It's Not About The Fox: The Untold History Of Pierson V. Post, Bethany Berger

Faculty Articles and Papers

For generations, Pierson v. Post, the famous fox case, has introduced students to the study of property law. Two hundred years after the case was decided, this Article examines the history of the case to show both how it fits into the American ideology of property, and how the facts behind the dispute challenge that ideology. Pierson is a canonical case because it replicates a central myth of American property law, that we start with a world in which no one has rights to anything and the fundamental problem is how best to convert it to absolute individual ownership. The …

Law In The Digital Age: How Visual Communication Technologies Are Transforming The Practice, Theory, And Teaching Of Law, Richard K. Sherwin, Neal Feingenson, Spiesel Christina Jan 2006

Law In The Digital Age: How Visual Communication Technologies Are Transforming The Practice, Theory, And Teaching Of Law, Richard K. Sherwin, Neal Feingenson, Spiesel Christina

Articles & Chapters

Law today has entered the digital age. The way law is practiced - how truth and justice are represented and assessed - is increasingly dependent on what appears on electronic screens in courtrooms, law offices, government agencies, and elsewhere. Practicing lawyers know this and are rapidly adapting to the new era of digital visual rhetoric. Legal theory and education, however, have yet to catch up.

This article is the first systematic effort to theorize law's transformation by new visual and multimedia technologies and to set out the changes in legal pedagogy that are needed to prepare law students for practice …
