This research was carried out along the Turkish Aegean Sea coast (from Saros Bay in the north to Turunç-Marmaris in the south) in order to determine the Isopod fauna. A total of 163 samplings were conducted at 23 stations and 17 different biotopes, from which 3209 specimens were collected belonging to 18 families, 29 genera and 50 species. Among the species determined, 18 are new records for the Turkish fauna (Anthura gracilis, Apanthura corsica, Asellus aquaticus, Janiropsis breviremis, Uromunna petiti, Cirolana cranchii, Eurydice affinis, E. inermis, E. pulchra, Cymodoce hanseni, Dynamene bifida, Ischyromene lacazei, Lekanesphaera monodi, Sphaeroma pulchellum, Emetha audouinii, …

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Four new localities of Leptotyphlops macrorhynchus (JAN, 1862) were recorded in Turkey. Two of the localities were found within the previously known distribution area on the east side of the Fırat River, and the other 2 were found on the west side. As a result, the distribution range of Leptotyphlops macrorhynchus has been extended. Information about the morphological features of the captured specimens is given.

Hatching Success Of Original And Hatchery Nests Of The Green Turtle, Chelonia Mydas, In Northern Cyprus, Burcu Özdemi̇r, Oğuz Türkozan

Turkish Journal of Zoology

This paper provides information on the relation of abiotic factors (moisture content, nest depth, distance of nest from the sea and distance from vegetation) and a biotic factor (clutch size) with the hatching success of green sea turtles, Chelonia mydas, in original nests and hatcheries in Northern Cyprus. A hundred and twenty-nine randomly selected clutches (67 original and 62 hatchery) were examined. First, original and hatchery nests were tested separately and none of the factors were found to be associated with hatching success. Since no differences were detected between the original and hatchery nests in terms of hatching success, both …

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The species diversity of the soil free-living ciliates of 3 parts of Pirgulian State Reserve was investigated. In total, 120 species of free-living ciliates were found. Five of them (Enchelys vermiformis F., 1986, Epispathidium terricola F., 1986, Drepanomonas sphagni Kahl, 1931, Frontonia terricola F., 1986, and Cirrophrya terricola F., 1986) are new for the Caucasus fauna. The description of 5 species are based on the observations of living specimens and the analysis of total slides impregnated by silver nitrate.

Sera of 50 goats, 3 horses, 1 dog, and 6 herdsmen were analyzed for the presence of antibodies against Listeria monocytogenes by the Osebold agglutination assay on a commercial farm in Akyurt, Ankara. Some of the goats exhibited clinical signs such as apathy, unilateral facial paralysis, incoordination, and abortion. Of the goat samples, 23 (46%) were seropositive and 10 (20%) were at the level of the suspected titer and 17 (34%) were below the cut-off titer in this assay. All horses, the dog and 5 herdsmen were seropositive. The analysis of cerebro-spinal fluid, taken from an agonic goat whose antibody …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

A total of 288 dairy cattle from 4 different closed barns were sampled in order to investigate the presence of bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) infection. Based on the data gathered from neutralisation peroxidase-linked antibody (NPLA) tests, which were conducted to detect BVDV antibodies, all of the barns monitored previously had the infection; the rates of seropositive animals were between 44% and 100%. Overall, the results obtained from Aydın province showed that 248 of the 288 dairy cows (86%) monitored were seropositive. BVDV antigen ELISA kits (Bio-X Diagnostics- Belgium) were used to detect BVDV antigen (NS3 protein) in blood samples. …

The Effects Of Red Pepper, Marigold Flower, And Synthetic Astaxanthin On Pigmentation, Growth, And Proximate Composition Of Penaeus Semisulcatus, Mustafa Göçer, Mahmut Yanar, Meti̇n Kumlu, Yasemen Yanar Jan 2006

The Effects Of Red Pepper, Marigold Flower, And Synthetic Astaxanthin On Pigmentation, Growth, And Proximate Composition Of Penaeus Semisulcatus, Mustafa Göçer, Mahmut Yanar, Meti̇n Kumlu, Yasemen Yanar

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Shrimps with an initial weight of 11.10 ± 0.26 g were fed diets supplemented with 6.6% red pepper (RP), 2.4% marigold flower (MF), and 100 mg/kg synthetic astaxanthin (SA), each of which contained 100 mg/kg total carotenoid, and a control diet (BD), without carotenoid supplement for 60 days. Dietary carotenoid sources did not significantly affect the growth of the shrimps (P > 0.05). SA supplementation yielded the highest survival rate (92%), followed by RP (82%) and the other diets (75%) (P < 0.05). All dietary carotenoid sources provided higher carotenoid accumulation compared to the control group (P < 0.05), but the difference between them was not significant (P > 0.05). RP and SA resulted in a greater protein increase in shrimp muscle than MF (P < 0.05); however, lipid, ash, and water content were similar in all diet groups (P > 0.05).

Detection Of Listeria Monocytogenes By Using Pcr In Helix Pomatia, Şükrü Kirkan, Ergün Ö. Göksoy, Osman Kaya

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The detection of Listeria monocytogenes in Helix pomatia, both raw and cooked is presented here. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a rapid procedure with both sensitivity and specificity for quick detection and identification of Listeria monocytogenes from raw and cooked Helix pomatia. A total of 30 bags (10 g each) of H. pomatia samples were investigated for the Listeria monocytogenes inlB gene with the PCR method. PCR amplification products demonstrated that 18 of the 30 samples showed positive reactions to Listeria monocytogenes in the PCR. All PCR positive samples showed specific amplification of the 343 bp fragment for Listeria monocytogenes.

Abortions In Sheep Due To Listeria Ivanovii In The Kars Region, Mi̇that Şahi̇n, Enver Beytut

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This report describes an outbreak of Listeria ivanovii-induced abortion in sheep in the Kars region. In a flock of 120 sheep raised in Taşlıdere, a village in the region of Arpaçay, in Kars, some ewes in the last stages of gestation aborted in March, 2004. Necropsy was conducted on 5 aborted foetuses. Livers of the aborted foetuses showed diffuse necrotic foci. Histologically, the liver and lungs of aborted foetuses revealed diffuse coagulative necrosis infiltrated with macrophages and neutrophils. Bacterial culture from the liver and lungs of foetuses found pure growth of L. ivanovii subsp. ivanovii.
