Effect Of Seeding Materials And Mixing Strength On Struvite Precipitation, Jun Wang, Joel Gerard Burken, Xiaoqi Zhang

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Struvite Precipitation Has Increasing Interest as a Technology for Removing and Recovering Phosphorus from Wastewater Streams. Many Chemical Factors Have Been Studied, Such as Optimum PH Values and Component-Ion Molar Ratios, Yet, Understanding of Physical Aspects is Lacking. Two Physical Parameters Were Tested: (1) Seeding Material Addition and (2) Mixing. Objectives Were to Evaluate Three Seeding Materials and to Optimize Mixing Conditions for Struvite-Crystal Precipitation, Growth, and Subsequent Sedimentation. Results Confirm that Mixing Strength and Proper Seeding Materials Increase Crystal Size and Improve Settleability. for Unseeded Solutions, Optimum Phosphorus Removal Was Achieved at a Mixing Strength of G = 76 …

Choice V. Chance: The Constitutional Case For Regulating Human Germline Genetic Modification, Nancy Pham Jan 2006

Choice V. Chance: The Constitutional Case For Regulating Human Germline Genetic Modification, Nancy Pham

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

With the rapid rate of advancing technology, human germline intervention ("HGGM") may be possible in the near future. But, is access to HGGM technology a constitutionally protected right? Under traditional substantive due process, constitutional protection turns on whether the right is fundamental. If the courts determine that access to HGGM is a fundamental right, then it would fall in line with the category of reproductive decision-making cases such as Griswold v. Connecticut. Moreover, such a classification would require states to have a compelling interest before restricting the right at all. However, if HGGM is not a fundamental right, then states …

Locking Down The Library: How Copyright, Contract, And Cybertrespass Block Internet Archiving, Rebecca Bolin Jan 2006

Locking Down The Library: How Copyright, Contract, And Cybertrespass Block Internet Archiving, Rebecca Bolin

UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal

Internet archiving has kept millions of websites from disappearing completely. Yet this ambitious effort, the largest archiving project in history, is neither legal nor comprehensive. Archives are rampant copyright infringers with no recourse to traditional library and affirmative defenses. Further, sophisticated authors have started "protecting" their creations with restrictive contracts, technical restrictions, and the shaky cybertrespass doctrine. Our legal regime has strayed from the constitutional values underlying copyright. Despite the social value in preserving cultural expression, the law has evolved to encompass a de facto right to withdraw and opt out of history itself.

The Sparrow Surface Water-Quality Model: Theory, Application And User Documentation, G. E. Schwarz, A. B. Hoos, R. B. Alexander, R. A. Smith Jan 2006

The Sparrow Surface Water-Quality Model: Theory, Application And User Documentation, G. E. Schwarz, A. B. Hoos, R. B. Alexander, R. A. Smith

United States Geological Survey: Publications

SPARROW (SPAtially Referenced Regressions On Watershed attributes) is a watershed modeling technique for relating water-quality measurements made at a network of monitoring stations to attributes of the watersheds containing the stations. The core of the model consists of a nonlinear regression equation describing the non-conservative transport of contaminants from point and diffuse sources on land to rivers and through the stream and river network. The model predicts contaminant flux, concentration, and yield in streams and has been used to evaluate alternative hypotheses about the important contaminant sources and watershed properties that control transport over large spatial scales.

Science-Based Organic Farming 2006: Toward Local And Secure Food Systems, Charles A. Francis, Katja Koehler-Cole, Twyla Hansen, Peter Skelton

Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)

Organic farming includes growing food and fiber—animals, agronomic crops, horticultural fruits and vegetables, related products—as one dynamic and rapidly evolving component of our complex U.S. food system. Even as more farmers are moving toward organic certification and participation in an environmentally sound and economically lucrative market, questions arise about the long-term social impacts and sustainability of a set of practices that has gone from a movement to an industry. Consolidations in the organic trade have brought multinational corporations to the table, as they have observed a grassroots activity that has grown by 20% per year for the past two decades, …

Revisiting The American Action For Public Disclosure Of Facts, In New Dimensions In Privacy Law: International And Comparative Perspectives (Andrew T. Kenyon & Megan Richardson Eds., 2006), Brian C. Murchison

Books and Chapters

Although the public disclosure tort has had an unpromising past, it appeals to what Anthony Lewis suggests is a sense of basic fairness to ‘those who have not sought power’ but have become illustrations of public issues. The tort’s weakness may be a function of cultural indifference or constitutional qualms, although the most likely explanation is institutional: until recently, the Supreme Court offered no illumination of a core interest. Libel law had reserved the obvious candidate, dignity, for civic contexts. Now, with the court’s decision in Bartnicki and the insights of a number of contemporary thinkers, it may be time …

Tribal Self-Determination At The Crossroads, Kevin Washburn Jan 2006

Tribal Self-Determination At The Crossroads, Kevin Washburn

Faculty Scholarship

The tribal self-determination initiative that began transforming federal Indian policy thirty years ago has reached a crossroads. Despite its transformative effects on tribal governments and the widespread belief that self-determination has been a successful federal approach to Indian affairs, no significant new self-determination program has been initiated at the congressional level in several years. This Article looks to the tribal self-determination initiative's past to gain insights about its future. It also briefly surveys existing tribal self-determination programs and concludes that far more work needs to be done to achieve tribal self-determination. Drawing on the author's broader work, it finds one …

In Vivo Laparoscopic Robotics, Mark E. Rentschler, Stephen R. Platt, Jason Dumpert, Shane M. Farritor, Dmitry Oleynikov

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Robotic laparoscopic surgery is evolving to include in vivo robotic assistants. The impetus for the development of this technology is to provide surgeons with additional viewpoints and unconstrained manipulators that improve safety and reduce patient trauma. A family of these robots have been developed to provide vision and task assistance. Fixed-base and mobile robots have been designed and tested in animal models with much success. A cholecystectomy, prostatectomy, and nephrectomy have all been performed with the assistance of these robots. These early successful tests show how in vivo laparoscopic robotics may be part of the next advancement in surgical technology.

The Wnt Signaling Antagonist Kremen1 Is Required For Development Of Thymic Architecture, Masako Osada, Emi Ito, Hector A. Fermin, Edwin Vazquez-Cintron, Tadmiri Venkatesh, Roland H. Friedel, Mark Pezzano Jan 2006

The Wnt Signaling Antagonist Kremen1 Is Required For Development Of Thymic Architecture, Masako Osada, Emi Ito, Hector A. Fermin, Edwin Vazquez-Cintron, Tadmiri Venkatesh, Roland H. Friedel, Mark Pezzano

Publications and Research

Wnt signaling has been reported to regulate thymocyte proliferation and selection at several stages during T cell ontogeny, as well as the expression of FoxN1 in thymic epithelial cells (TECs). Kremen1 (Krm1) is a negative regulator of the canonical Wnt signaling pathway, and functions together with the secreted Wnt inhibitor Dickkopf (Dkk) by competing for the lipoprotein receptor-related protein (LRP)-6 co-receptor for Wnts. Here krm1 knockout mice were used to examine krm1 expression in the thymus and its function in thymocyte and TEC development. krm1 expression was detected in both cortical and medullary TEC subsets, as well as in immature …

Footprints Across The South: Bartram's Trail Revisited, James Kautz Jan 2006

Footprints Across The South: Bartram's Trail Revisited, James Kautz

KSU Press Legacy Project

Over the past three decades, a tireless group of volunteers, funded by donations and small grants, has laid out the “Bartram Trail.” Drawn on maps, marked by metal signs beside highways and city streets and by blazes on trees, the trail follows the overall pathway of the eighteenth-century naturalist. Francis Harper’s edition of Bartram’s Travels led the way, identifying most of Bartram’s sites and species. More recently, Brad Sanders has given detailed directions to Bartram’s locations and present-day sites along the trail. Charles D. Spornick, Alan R. Cattier, and Robert J. Greene have published a guide for outdoor enthusiasts and …

The Great Middle Class Revolution: Our Long March Toward A Professionalized Society, Melvyn L. Fein Jan 2006

The Great Middle Class Revolution: Our Long March Toward A Professionalized Society, Melvyn L. Fein

KSU Press Legacy Project

Nowadays, liberalism is in crisis. Whereas conservatism suffered a profound meltdown during the Great Depression, today it is liberals who must confront the disconfirmation of many of their cherished beliefs. Sometimes, it seems as if a few are behaving like teenaged rebels, trying to prove that they will not buckle under adult hypocrisies. Yet, despite refusing to conform, they reflexively align themselves with the symbols of their sedition. Festooned with tattoos, body piercings, and spiky green hairdos, they insist they have arrived at these fashions independently. Liberals similarly take positions without acknowledging that these derive from groupthink. Like the journalists …

Constructed Ponds As Mitigated Habitat For The Wood Frog (Rana Sylvatica Leconte) And The Spotted Salamander (Ambystoma Maculatum Shaw) In West Virginia, Celeste Dawn Good

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Many forest dwelling amphibians depend upon aquatic breeding habitats, making them susceptible to habitat changes. To determine if amphibian use of temporary pools occurred, 9 ponds were constructed in 3 forested areas on the MeadWestvaco Wildlife and Ecosystem Research Forest. Studies were conducted in 6 ponds during 2004, and all 9 in 2005 using drift fences. Trapped amphibians were measured and given a pond specific mark with visible implant elastomers. A significant difference was found between low and high elevation sites for juvenile R. sylvatica snout-to-vent length. No significant differences were found for soil, air or water temperatures between sites …

The Angle

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"When I was seven years old, I was happy to be me. I went to grade school in Falconer, NY and my parents were actually told I was too chatty which was a far cry from when I was voted 'The Quietest' in high school. One report card even said, 'Mikey is a good student but likes to chitchat too much.' I just remember getting along with all the kids in school then; and since it was a small school, you knew everyone. Most, if not all, the kids …

Effects Of A Single Foot Rot Incident On Weight Performance Of Feedlot Steers, G. K. Tibbetts, T. M. Devin, D. Griffin, J. E. Keen, G. P. Rupp

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Feedlot performance records from the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center feedlot for 1993 through 2000 were analyzed to evaluate the impact of foot rot on ADG and total days on feed. Records from the original pool of 36,755 bull, steer, and heifer calves were sorted so that only steers that had a single foot rot incidence and no other morbidities were included in the data set (7,100 steers). To roughly pattern these data to industry production practices, time of foot rot insult during feeding was divided into 3 production periods: starting (0 to 60 d), growing (61 to 120 d), …
