A Social Cognitive Approach Towards Understanding The Effects Of Popular Poker Television Shows On College Students, Marc Londo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Tournament poker shows have become a leading ratings draw on American television. Since ESPN and the Travel Channel began airing their innovative poker shows in 2003, the game has reached a new following, particularly among college students. There are unique and psychologically significant factors that characterize the college population that make students particularly receptive to popular characterizations in media. This study investigates the potential exacerbating effect that these widely popular poker television shows have on the gambling behavior of college students. 444 college students completed a survey designed to assess gratifications sought through media along with measures of attitudes, gambling …

The Importance Of Career Exploration To At-Risk Middle School Students : A Thesis ..., Craig Panzer
The Importance Of Career Exploration To At-Risk Middle School Students : A Thesis ..., Craig Panzer
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
This action thesis explores the current crisis of students leaving school before they graduate. It examines the implications of incorporating a curriculum in career exploration to at risk students. The curriculum consisted of a six week unit exploring careers of which the students expressed interest. It was found that during this six week intervention disciplinary problems decreased, students asked more questions and attendance increased. This project has implications for teachers and administrators as they plan lessons, units, and make school wide decisions.

Fundamentalism: The Extreme Reaction To German Higher Criticism, John M. Muir
Fundamentalism: The Extreme Reaction To German Higher Criticism, John M. Muir
Seminary Masters Theses
Preface
Beginning in the last half of the nineteenth century in America the Christian Church became radically divided over the issue of German Higher Criticism and the theory of evolution. Those who accepted German Higher Criticism and evolutionary theory called themselves Progressives, or Liberals, while those who rejected German Higher Criticism and evolutionary theory called themselves Fundamentalists. While those on the left usually see both names, Progressives and Liberals, as pejorative today, those in the Fundamentalist camp still hold proudly to the name and hold to the same basic beliefs. My thesis is that the Fundamentalist's rejection of German Higher …

Three Tales Of Two Towns: How Fano Entered The Golden Age Of Sail, Anne Ipsen
Three Tales Of Two Towns: How Fano Entered The Golden Age Of Sail, Anne Ipsen
The Bridge
Fano is a magical island off the west coast of Denmark, justly famous for its endless white beach along the North Sea. Towering dunes, whose slopes are covered in lyme grass, ring the center of the island where the heath is home to an abundance of creatures and plants. The colors of the sky and water, the heather and grass change in rhythm with the seasons. The solid houses of the two towns, Nordby to the north and Sonderho at the southern tip, bear witness to the wealth brought home from the seven seas by generations of seamen sailing their …

Building Interoperable Vocabulary And Structures For Learning Objects, Jian Qin, Naybell Hernández
School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship
The structural, functional, and production views on learning objects influence metadata structure and vocabulary. We drew on these views and conducted a literature review and in-depth analysis of 14 learning objects and over 500 components in these learning objects to model the knowledge framework for a learning object ontology. The learning object ontology reported in this paper consists of 8 top-level classes, 28 classes at the second level, and 34 at the third level. Except class Learning object, all other classes have the three properties of preferred term, related term, and synonym. To validate the ontology, we conducted a query …
Learning Styles Affecting Student Learning In Online Based Education Systems, Christina Schmunk
Learning Styles Affecting Student Learning In Online Based Education Systems, Christina Schmunk
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
In the last few decades various learning theories emerged characterizing the strengths and preferences people have in the ways they assimilate and process new ideas and concepts. In this capstone we introduce the results of an exploratory pilot study which examines how learning styles or multiple intelligences influence performance in students who used an online homework system in their pre-service teacher math content courses at CSUMB. There is literature concerning whether it is important for educators to be able to adapt their teaching to adjust to their students' multiple learning styles. This study will be able to provide guidance towards …
Teaching Collaboration For The Performing Arts : Program Design That Creates A Bridge Between Monterey Peninsula College And California State University, Monterey Bay While Giving The Community Voice, Steven Retsky
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The purpose of this Action Thesis is to research, design and implement an ancillary drama program for the proposed Education Center of Monterey Peninsula College at the former Fort Ord. The author hopes that research will uncover the District's expectations of the new campus and its programs, areas of current programs that are open to improvement by a secondary program and ways of including methods of teaching that foster collaboration both within the art form and with the community. The final product should be a program design that draws students and source material from the underserved local communities, teaches basic …

Broken Contract : : A People's History Of Csu Monterey Bay, 1994-2004 ..., Mark Weirick
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The only part of the vision that I think is alive is the constant questioning of where is the vision. In other words, there is still enough memory in this place for people to invoke the vision statement when they're disappointed. Anonymous Staff Member. The university administration's history of CSU Monterey Bay starkly contrasts with the experiences many members of the campus community have had: that of a campus of broken promises, vindictive suppression of the outspoken, and an empty commitment to its Vision Statement. This history, a people's history, seeks to show that other perspective: that marginalized voice, that …

Trace Element Concentrations In The Pacific Harbor Seal, Phoca Vitulina Richardii, In Central And Northern California : A Thesis ..., Tiffini Jo Brookens
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
To determine trace element concentrations in the Pacific harbor seal (Phoca vitulina richardii), live (n=189) and dead seals (n=53) were sampled throughout central and northern California from March 2003 to January 2005. Total mercury (THg) concentrations were determined in blood and hair of live harbor seals and hair and liver of dead harbor seals. Concentrations of monomethyl mercury (MeHg), selenium (Se), and lead (Pb) additionally were determined in liver of dead harbor seals. To assess trophic level, carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes were examined in liver. Age class assignments of live harbor seals were based on morphometrics, and ages of …

Children's Social Behaviors And Peer Interactions In Diverse Cultures, Carolyn P. Edwards, Maria Rosario De Guzman, Jill Brown, Asiye Kumru
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
Cultural socialization has long interested behavioral and social scientists, but recent advances in theory and methodology have allowed researchers to construct new and more powerful theoretical frameworks for conceptualizing the complex ways in which children interact with their environments during the course of development. Studies of childhood socialization in the classic tradition of cross-cultural research were static in their approach to analyzing underlying processes because of limitations in the theories and methods available at the time they were conducted. Many studies, for example, involved straightforward associations or comparisons of levels of parental socialization pressure (the antecedent condition) with children's social …

An Optimal Brain Can Be Composed Of Conflicting Agents, Adi Livnat, Nicholas Pippenger
An Optimal Brain Can Be Composed Of Conflicting Agents, Adi Livnat, Nicholas Pippenger
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
Many behaviors have been attributed to internal conflict within the animal and human mind. However, internal conflict has not been reconciled with evolutionary principles, in that it appears maladaptive relative to a seamless decision-making process. We study this problem through a mathematical analysis of decision-making structures. We find that, under natural physiological limitations, an optimal decision-making system can involve “selfish” agents that are in conflict with one another, even though the system is designed for a single purpose. It follows that conflict can emerge within a collective even when natural selection acts on the level of the collective only.
