Explanation, Human Nature, And Tort Theory, Jeffery L. Johnson Jan 2006

Explanation, Human Nature, And Tort Theory, Jeffery L. Johnson

ExpressO

The article argues that, as they are usually stated, corrective justice theories of torts and economic efficiency theories fail to contradict one another. Thus, although the literature typically sees these approaches as doing conceptual battle, it takes a good deal of philosophical analysis to discover a theoretical framework from which to assess one perspective as superior to the other. Indeed, in many cases the corrective justice scholar appears to be talking past the economic lawyer, and vice versa.

The article then goes on to suggest that the one perspective from which we can see a genuine conflict between the explanations …

Opportunities Farm Update, Erik Loe, Robbi Pritchard, Matt Loewe

South Dakota Beef Report, 2006

Opportunities Farm allows comparisons of different feedlot facilities located on one site for use in teaching and outreach. The three facilities are: 1) bed-pack confinement, 2) dirt-mound open pens, and 3) partially-covered pens. The first cattle were placed in Opportunities Farm in February 2004. There have been 3,023 head of steers and heifers marketed from Opportunities Farm through June 2006.

Clinical Perspectives Of Emerging Pathogens In Bleeding Disorders, Jamie Siegel Jan 2006

Clinical Perspectives Of Emerging Pathogens In Bleeding Disorders, Jamie Siegel

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

As a result of immunological and nucleic-acid screening of plasma donations for transfusion-transmissible viruses, and the incorporation of viral reduction processes during plasma fractionation, coagulation-factor concentrates (CFC) are now judged safe in terms of many known infectious agents, including hepatitis B and C viruses, HIV, and human T-cell lymphotropic virus. However, emerging pathogens could pose future threats, particularly those with blood-borne stages that are resistant to viral-inactivation steps in the manufacturing process, such as non-lipid-coated viruses. As outlined in this Review, better understanding of infectious diseases allows challenges from newly described agents of potential concern in the future to be …

Using Species Richness To Estimate Benthic Sampling Effort, Robert M. Cerrato, Nicole P. Maher Jan 2006

Using Species Richness To Estimate Benthic Sampling Effort, Robert M. Cerrato, Nicole P. Maher

School of Marine & Atmospheric Sciences Faculty Publications

In planning marine benthic grab sampling, there is a need to determine the number of faunal samples that should be collected to guarantee than an adequate amount of data is available to identify and describe faunal community structure. We suggest that an estimate of species richness can serve as the basis for the determining sample size. An appropriate criterion might be, for example, to set sample size within an environmentally and biologically homogenous area large enough such that at least 70% of the species that are present are collected. The goal of present study is to identify an appropriate species …

The SDSU Cow Calf Teaching & Research Unit (CCU) provides cattle and facilities for numerous Animal Science and Range Science classes and a variety of research projects. The CCU also provides cattle for the SDSU Little International, Block & Bridle activities, numerous judging team workouts, and other activities that bring potential students to the SDSU campus. Kevin VanderWal and Anna Drew, along with part time student employees, manage the herd and assist with beef cattle activities throughout the year. Faculty members that have conducted or contributed to research in recent years include: Dick Pruitt, George Perry, Sandy Smart, Jeff Clapper, …

Investigation Of Different Video Compression Schemes Using Neural Networks, Prem Kovvuri Jan 2006

Investigation Of Different Video Compression Schemes Using Neural Networks, Prem Kovvuri

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Image/Video compression has great significance in the communication of motion pictures and still images. The need for compression has resulted in the development of various techniques including transform coding, vector quantization and neural networks. this thesis neural network based methods are investigated to achieve good compression ratios while maintaining the image quality. Parts of this investigation include motion detection, and weight retraining. An adaptive technique is employed to improve the video frame quality for a given compression ratio by frequently updating the weights obtained from training. More specifically, weight retraining is performed only when the error exceeds a given threshold …

Evaluation Of The Sliri/Landmine Action Socio-Economic Impact And Dangerous Area Surveys And Of Sliri's Organizational Sustainability In The Nuba Mountains, Jim Freedman Consulting

Global CWD Repository

From its inspired beginnings in 2001, the Sudan Landmines Information and Response Initiative (SLIRI) has had the potential to become an influential mine action organization with the capacity to use the mine action platform for engaging Sudan's adversaries in a peacebuilding dialogue. It is the only non-partisan indigenous organization in thecountry. Its first location – or Sector Operations Centre (SOC) as the site offices have been called - and the most innovative has been in the Nuba Mountains, where shortly after the cease-fire in January 2002 SLIRI first introduced two offices working in tandem on either side of the conflict …

Evolution Of Stellar Bars In Live Axisymmetric Halos: Recurrent Buckling And Secular Growth, Inma Martinez-Valpuesta, Isaac Shlosman, Clayton Heller Jan 2006

Evolution Of Stellar Bars In Live Axisymmetric Halos: Recurrent Buckling And Secular Growth, Inma Martinez-Valpuesta, Isaac Shlosman, Clayton Heller

Physics & Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Evolution of stellar bars in disk galaxies is accompanied by dynamical instabilities and secular changes. Following the vertical buckling instability, the bars are known to weaken dramatically and develop a pronounced boxy/ peanut shape when observed edge-on. Using high-resolution N-body simulations of stellar disks embedded in live axisymmetric dark matter halos, we have investigated the long-term changes in the bar morphology, specifically the evolution of the bar size, its vertical structure, and the exchange of angular momentum. We find that following the initial buckling, the bar resumes its growth from deep inside the corotation radius and follows the ultraharmonic resonance …

Deer-Vehicle Accident Hotspots In Northwest Clackamas County, Oregon, Linda K. Anderson Jan 2006

Deer-Vehicle Accident Hotspots In Northwest Clackamas County, Oregon, Linda K. Anderson

Dissertations and Theses

Road-kill of wildlife is common on Portland, Oregon's suburban fringe where development has increased road densities and traffic volume in rural areas. I identify the spatial and temporal patterns of black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus) deer-vehicle accidents (DVA) at the suburban/rural interface of developing northwest Clackamas County using deer carcass pickup reports for county maintained roads for 1997-2004 and Oregon Department of Transportation deer-vehicle accident reports for 1996-2004. No black-tailed deer DVA models exist in the literature.

DVA increased 121% from 1997 to 1999 followed by a 26% decline by 2004. The initial DVA increase appears related to …

Creating The Role Of Dabby Bryant In Timberlake Wertenbaker's Our Country's Good, Tiffany Patrick

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to create the character of Dabby Bryant in Timberlake Wertenbaker's Our Country's Good, which was selected for the third production in the University of New Orleans' 2004-2005 theatre season. The steps involved in creating Dabby Bryant's character involve using specific methods as outlined by the Acting Program of UNO as well as the text A Practical Handbook for the Actor by Melissa Bruder, et. al. I also utilized specific instructions from the director of the production, David Hoover, also my major professor. I also had to use the novel The Playmaker by Thomas Keneally …
