Form Over Substance: The Inadequacy Of Informed Consent And Ethical Review For Thai Injection Drug Users Enrolled In Hiv Vaccine Trials, Joan M. Doherty

Washington International Law Journal

Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (“AIDS”) has emerged as a health issue of global significance, and clinical research on Human Immunodeficiency Virus (“HIV”) and AIDS has become increasingly international in scope. A clinical trial of a vaccine designed to prevent the spread of the HIV raises important legal and ethical questions because injection drug users who were believed to be unsuitable subjects for study in the United States were singled out for research in Thailand. The protections for human subjects must not be compromised when U.S. pharmaceutical companies conduct research abroad, particularly where clinical trials are conducted in vulnerable populations. U.S. …

Organizational, Technological, And Environmental Determinants Of Electronic Commerce Adoption In Small And Medium Enterprises In Taiwan, Chang-Shuo (Xenos) Lin Feb 2006

Organizational, Technological, And Environmental Determinants Of Electronic Commerce Adoption In Small And Medium Enterprises In Taiwan, Chang-Shuo (Xenos) Lin

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

In the Internet age, the development of electronic commerce (EC) was considered a major indicator of the overall competitiveness of organizations. Moreover, the EC marketing channel can bring customers more benefits, such as greater shopping convenience and potentially lower prices. In Taiwan, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) represent 98% of the total number of business. Today, most SMEs were forced to adopt EC by their major suppliers and value chain partners in order to carry out business processes more efficiently. Hence, the purpose of this study is to seek the determinants of the extent of EC adoption by SMEs in …

A Three-Dimensional Functional Assessment Of Heart And Vessel Development In The Larva Of The Zebrafish (Danio Rerio), Brian Bagatto, Warren Burggren Feb 2006

A Three-Dimensional Functional Assessment Of Heart And Vessel Development In The Larva Of The Zebrafish (Danio Rerio), Brian Bagatto, Warren Burggren

Biology Faculty Research

There has been considerable recent interest in the development of the circulation in the zebrafish. Optical techniques typically used to visualize changes in heart size allow measurement of stroke volume during early vertebrate development, but this approach is complicated in zebrafish larvae because of the heart's irregular shape and its significant change in morphology during the first 6 d of development. By use of a three-dimensional integration of the early zebrafish heart and vessels, we have greatly reduced measurement error of stroke volume and cardiac output and have determined the cross-sectional growth of major vessels in the developing zebrafish larvae. …

Zoned Secular: Seattle's Prohibition Of New Religious Facilities In Industrial Zones Violates The Religious Land Use And Institutionalized Persons Act's "Equal Terms" Rule, Daniel Kirkpatrick Feb 2006

Zoned Secular: Seattle's Prohibition Of New Religious Facilities In Industrial Zones Violates The Religious Land Use And Institutionalized Persons Act's "Equal Terms" Rule, Daniel Kirkpatrick

Washington Law Review

The "equal terms" rule of the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA) prohibits federal, state, and local governments from enacting land use regulations that place religious assemblies or institutions on less than equal terms with nonreligious assemblies or institutions. The plain language of RLUIPA makes it clear that the equal terms rule prohibits unequal treatment of religious assemblies and institutions as compared to non-religious assemblies and institutions. RLUIPA's legislative history further reveals that Congress enacted the equal terms rule to counter zoning laws that favor secular assemblies and institutions over religious assemblies and institutions. Accordingly, federal courts have …

Creating Persuasive Messages Advocating Organ Donation, Keith Weber, Matthew M. Martin, Members Of Comm 401, Michael W. Corrigan

Elementary & Secondary Education Faculty Research

Most people state that they would be willing to be organ donors, however only a small percentage of the population has actually signed an organ donor card. These studies focused on persuasive messages that encourage people to sign organ donor cards. In the first study, people reported their attitudes and knowledge involving organ donation. Results indicated that donor card signing was related to overall knowledge about donation. When only considering those people with positive attitudes toward organ donation, their overall knowledge about donation explained their willingness to sign organ donor cards. In the second study, people read a message involving …

The Established Intimin Receptor Tir And The Putative Eucaryotic Intimin Receptors Nucleolin And B1 Integrin Localize At Or Near The Site Of Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia Coli O157:H7 Adherence To Enterocytes In Vivo, James F. Sinclair, Evelyn A. Dean-Nystrom, Alison D. O’Brien Feb 2006

O’Brien

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

For enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) O157:H7 to adhere tightly to the intestinal epithelium and produce attach and efface (A/E) lesions, the organism must express the adhesin intimin and insert the bacterially encoded translocated intimin receptor Tir into the plasma membrane of the host enterocyte. Additionally, some reports based on tissue culture experiments indicate that intimin has affinity for the eucaryotic proteins nucleolin and β1 integrin. To address the potential biological relevance of these eucaryotic proteins in the infection process in vivo, we sought to compare the proximity of Tir, nucleolin, and β1 integrin to regions of EHEC …

Antisense Inhibition Of Cyclin D1 Expression Is Equivalent To Flavopiridol For Radiosensitization Of Zebrafish Embryos, Mary Frances Mcaleer, Kevin T. Duffy, William R. Davidson, Gabor Kari, Adam P. Dicker, Ulrich Rodeck, Eric Wickstrom

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

Purpose: Flavopiridol, a small molecule pan-cyclin inhibitor, has been shown to enhance the radiation response of tumor cells both in vitro and in vivo. The clinical utility of flavopiridol, however, is limited by toxicity, previously attributed to pleiotropic inhibitory effects on several targets affecting multiple signal transduction pathways. Here we utilized zebrafish embryos to investigate radiosensitizing effects of flavopiridol in normal tissues.

Methods and Materials: Zebrafish embryos at the 1-4 cell stage were treated with 500 nM flavopiridol or injected with 0.5 pmol antisense hydroxylprolyl-phosphono nucleic acid oligomers to reduce cyclin D1 expression, then subjected to ionizing radiation (IR) or …

Extension's Role In Homeland Security: A Virginia Perspective, John “Rusty” H. Miller, Robert Grisso, Michael Lambur

Journal of Extension

Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) conducted a project designed to determine what role it might play in assisting local governments in dealing with emergency preparedness issues in the aftermath of a manmade disaster resulting from terrorist activity. The project was funded through USDA. Community forums were used to collect viewpoints and perspectives on the unique role VCE could play in providing Homeland Security educational assistance to local governments and key professionals involved in the protection of residents from a terrorist attack. Using this information, VCE has taken steps to position itself to play a key role in addressing this important issue.

Continuity And Change: Themes Of Mental Model Development Among Small-Scale Farmers, Eileen Eckert, Alexandra Bell Feb 2006

Continuity And Change: Themes Of Mental Model Development Among Small-Scale Farmers, Eileen Eckert, Alexandra Bell

Journal of Extension

Farmers' mental models of farming influence their learning, decisions, and actions. Sometimes realizing opportunities for success requires farmers to challenge assumptions embedded in their mental models. The qualitative study described here explored how a group of small-scale farmers developed mental models of farming and the conditions under which their models changed. Two themes emerged indicating that farmers developed and reinforced existing mental models through discovery learning and problem solving and that an "activating event" may trigger transformation of an existing mental model. Understanding how farmers develop mental models can help educators design learning programs and services that enable farmers to …

Large-Scale Dairies And Their Neighbors: A Case Study Of The Perceived Risk In Two Counties, M Susie Whittington, Kellie J. Warner Feb 2006

Large-Scale Dairies And Their Neighbors: A Case Study Of The Perceived Risk In Two Counties, M Susie Whittington, Kellie J. Warner

Journal of Extension

Most urban residents, many nonfarm rural residents, and even family farmers view large-scale animal agriculture as an undesirable neighbor. A study examined the perceived attributes of the manager of the risk in two communities upon the siting of a large-scale dairy. Conclusions were: 1) community members are unable to identify the manager of the risk, 2) citizens feel hopeless to act, 3) personal experience in agriculture leads to understanding the issues, 4) large-scale animal agriculture is a cultural shift, 5) two-way communication with communities is essential, and 6) safety precautions by the farmer leads to greater community acceptance of the …

“You’Re My Parent But You’Re Not”: Dialectical Tensions In Stepchildren’S Perceptions About Communicating With The Nonresidential Parent, Dawn O. Braithwaite, Leslie A. Baxter Feb 2006

“You’Re My Parent But You’Re Not”: Dialectical Tensions In Stepchildren’S Perceptions About Communicating With The Nonresidential Parent, Dawn O. Braithwaite, Leslie A. Baxter

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

The nonresidential parent plays a role in the lives of stepchildren and in stepfamily households. The focus of the present study was on the interaction between the nonresidential parent and his/her child who resides as part of a stepfamily household. Grounded in relational dialectics theory, the researchers performed an interpretive analysis of 50 transcribed interviews with college-aged stepchildren. Stepchildren’s perceptions of communication with the nonresidential parent were animated by two contradictions: parenting/nonparenting and openness/closedness. These two contradictions form a totality, interwoven with one another. The parenting/nonparenting contradiction reflected stepchildren’s ambivalence over parenting attempts of nonresidential parents. Stepchildren wanted nonresidential parent …

Farnesol-Induced Apoptosis In Aspergillus Nidulans Reveals A Possible Mechanism For Antagonistic Interactions Between Fungi, Camile P. Semighini, Jacob M. Hornby, Raluca Dumitru, Kenneth W. Nickerson, Steven D. Harris Feb 2006

Farnesol-Induced Apoptosis In Aspergillus Nidulans Reveals A Possible Mechanism For Antagonistic Interactions Between Fungi, Camile P. Semighini, Jacob M. Hornby, Raluca Dumitru, Kenneth W. Nickerson, Steven D. Harris

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

The dimorphic fungus Candida albicans secretes farnesol, which acts as a quorum-sensing molecule and prevents the yeast to mycelium conversion. In this study we examined the effect of farnesol in the filamentous fungus Aspergillus nidulans. We show that externally added farnesol has no effect on hyphal morphogenesis; instead, it triggers morphological features characteristic of apoptosis. Additional experiments suggest that mitochondria and reactive oxygen species (ROS) participate in farnesol-induced apoptosis. Moreover, the effects of farnesol appear to be mediated by the FadA heterotrimeric G protein complex. Because A. nidulans does not secrete detectable amounts of farnesol, we propose that it …

Transcriptome Signature Of Virulent And Attenuated Pseudorabies Virus-Infected Rodent Brain, Christina Paulus, Patricia J. Sollars, Gary E. Pickard, Lynn W. Enquist

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Mammalian alphaherpesviruses normally establish latent infections in ganglia of the peripheral nervous system in their natural hosts. Occasionally, however, these viruses spread to the central nervous system (CNS), where they cause damaging, often fatal, infections. Attenuated alphaherpesvirus derivatives have been used extensively as neuronal circuit tracers in a variety of animal models. Their circuit-specific spread provides a unique paradigm to study the local and global CNS response to infection. Thus, we systematically analyzed the host gene expression profile after acute pseudorabies virus (PRV) infection of the CNS using Affymetrix GeneChip technology. Rats were injected intraocularly with one of three selected …

Treponema Denticola In Disseminating Endodontic Infections, F. Foschi, Jacques Izard, H. Sasaki, V. Sambri, C. Prati, R. Müller, P. Stashenko

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Treponema denticola is a consensus periodontal pathogen that has recently been associated with endodontic pathology. In this study, the effect of mono-infection of the dental pulp with T. denticola and with polymicrobial “red-complex” organisms (RC) (Porphyromonas gingivalis, Tannerella forsythia, and T. denticola) in inducing disseminating infections in wild-type (WT) and severe-combined-immunodeficiency (SCID) mice was analyzed. After 21 days, a high incidence (5/10) of orofacial abscesses was observed in SCID mice mono-infected with T. denticola, whereas abscesses were rare in SCID mice infected with the red-complex organisms or in wild-type mice. Splenomegaly was …

In Defense Of Regulatory Peer Review, J.B. Ruhl, James Salzman Feb 2006

In Defense Of Regulatory Peer Review, J.B. Ruhl, James Salzman

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

The debate over application of peer review to the regulatory decisions of administrative agencies has heated up in the last year. Part of the larger and controversial sound science movement, mandating peer review for certain types of agency decisions has recently been championed by the White House and proponents in Congress. Indeed, this past January the Office of Management and Budget finalized guidelines requiring peer review for large classes of agency activities. These initiatives have not gone unchallenged, and a fierce debate has resulted between those who claim peer review will strengthen the scientific basis of agency decisions and those …
