Fgf4 And Wnt5a/Pcp Signaling Promote Limb Outgrowth By Polarizing Limb Mesenchyme, Keri Lynn Low
Fgf4 And Wnt5a/Pcp Signaling Promote Limb Outgrowth By Polarizing Limb Mesenchyme, Keri Lynn Low
Theses and Dissertations
The focus of this study was to elucidate the molecular and cellular mechanisms whereby fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) mediate outgrowth of the limb. Specifically, we examined the epistatic relationship between FGF and Wnt/Planar cell polarity (PCP) signaling in establishing cell polarity as a mechanism for outgrowth. By implanting beads into embryonic limbs and lateral plate mesoderm, we established that FGF activates Wnt5a in a gradient fashion. Once it was established that Wnt5a was expressed at the right time and place to turn on PCP signaling, we investigated the ability of Wnt5a to influence cell migration and/or cell polarity. Our analysis …

Bacteriological Study Of The Marine Water In The Coastal Of The North Sulawesi Province, Indonesia, Lies Lies Sutiknowati
Makara Journal of Science
The main objective of this research was to study the marine bacteriology of the coast of North Sulawesi. The study was accomplished by calculating the abundance of coliform, heterotrophic, and pathogenic bacteria, and analyzing the coexistence relationship between bacteria and phytoplanktons. This research, which included the sampling and laboratory works, has been carried out on 25 – 28 October, 2000. The results suggested that the abundance of each bacteria was as follows: coliform bacteria range between 227-5940 cfu/100 ml with averages 1814.1 cfu/100 ml, found in all stations; heterotrophic bacteria range between (1-82) x 103 cfu/ml with averages 12.1 x …

Long-Term Neuroadaptations Produced By Withdrawal From Repeated Cocaine Treatment: Role Of Dopaminergic Receptors In Modulating Cortical Excitability, Lourdes Nogueira, Peter W. Kalivas, Antonieta Lavin
Long-Term Neuroadaptations Produced By Withdrawal From Repeated Cocaine Treatment: Role Of Dopaminergic Receptors In Modulating Cortical Excitability, Lourdes Nogueira, Peter W. Kalivas, Antonieta Lavin
MUSC Faculty Journal Articles
Dopamine (DA) modulates neuronal activity in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and is necessary for optimal cognitive function. Dopamine transmission in the PFC is also important for the behavioral adaptations produced by repeated exposure to cocaine. Therefore, we investigated the effects of repeated cocaine treatment followed by withdrawal (2– 4 weeks) on the responsivity of cortical cells to electrical stimulation of the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and to systemic administration of DA D1 or D2 receptor antagonists. Cortical cells in cocaine- and saline-treated animals exhibited a similar decrease in excitability after the administration of D1 receptor antagonists. In contrast, cortical neurons …

A Graph-Theoretic Method For Detecting Potential Turing Bifurcations, Maya Mincheva, Marc R. Roussel
A Graph-Theoretic Method For Detecting Potential Turing Bifurcations, Maya Mincheva, Marc R. Roussel
Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship
The conditions for diffusion-driven (Turing) instabilities in systems with two reactive species are well known. General methods for detecting potential Turing bifurcations in larger reaction schemes are, on the other hand, not well developed. We prove a theorem for a graph-theoretic condition originally given by Volpert and Ivanova [Mathematical Modeling (Nauka, Moscow, 1987) (in Russian), p. 57] for Turing instabilities in a mass-action reaction-diffusion system involving n substances. The method is based on the representation of a reaction mechanism as a bipartite graph with two types of nodes representing chemical species and reactions, respectively. The condition for diffusion-driven instability is …

Feed costs represent the major cost in most livestock production systems. A recently completed analysis of 225 Standardized Performance Analysis (SPA) Beef Cow Records on herds in Illinois and Iowa showed that feed cost was the overriding factor determining profitability, explaining over 57 percent of the herd-to-herd variation.
Dollars & Cents Of Intensive Grazing, Kenneth H. Burdine
Dollars & Cents Of Intensive Grazing, Kenneth H. Burdine
Kentucky Grazing Conference
A rotational grazing system can generally be defined as the use of several pastures with one being grazed while the others are rested. On the contrary, conventional or continuous grazing systems allow livestock access to the entire pasture area and let them decide where, what, and how long to graze. In most cases, Kentucky pastures employing continuous grazing systems are too large for efficient management and forage utilization. In such instances, cattle overgraze more palatable forages and areas close to shade and water, while other sections of the pasture are underutilized. This leads to lower animal output per acre than …
Uk Horse Pasture Evaluation Program, Tom Keene, S. Ray Smith
Uk Horse Pasture Evaluation Program, Tom Keene, S. Ray Smith
Kentucky Grazing Conference
The University of Kentucky is developing stronger ties with the state’s horse industry in the areas of research, extension and teaching. Many horse farms in the bluegrass region are interested in UK’s assistance with pasture evaluation. During the fall of 2005 a team from the UK Forage Extension Program (Ray Smith, Tom Keene, Jesse Morrison, Gabriel Roberts) conducted a pilot project to evaluate horse pastures on 14 central KY farms. One of the focuses of the pilot was the evaluation of pastures for percent tall fescue and the potential of fescue stands to cause fescue toxicity in pregnant broodmares. We …
Managing Pasture Growth And Quality With Grazing, S. Ray Smith
Managing Pasture Growth And Quality With Grazing, S. Ray Smith
Kentucky Grazing Conference
One of the keys to profitable livestock production is to minimize the costs of producing a marketable animal or animal product. Feed costs are commonly 70-80 percent of the cost of growing or maintaining an animal. Pastures provide feed at a cost of .01-.02 cents/lb of TDN while hay costs .04-.06 cents/lb TDN. Improved pasture management offers the single greatest opportunity to lower production costs, assuming that animal genetics, health, marketing procedures, and other areas of management have been addressed. A primary goal of livestock producers should be to utilize grazed forage for as many months of the year as …
Everyday Cattle Graze Is Money Saved, Garry D. Lacefield
Everyday Cattle Graze Is Money Saved, Garry D. Lacefield
Kentucky Grazing Conference
During one of my first visits to New Zealand over twenty years ago, I had the opportunity to visit many different dairy, beef, sheep and deer farms. While visiting a dairy farm, I remember the farmer telling me about his grazing program and their goal to “optimize grazing and minimize stored feed.” I remember him saying, “everyday grazed is money saved”. I admit, the reality of that statement didn’t truly sink in that day; but over the years, the truth of what he said has not only “sunk in” but has been reinforced by visits to other farms literally around …
Contractarianism, Contractualism, And The Law Of Corporate Insolvency, Riz Mokal
Contractarianism, Contractualism, And The Law Of Corporate Insolvency, Riz Mokal
ExpressO
What is the appropriate way of theorising about corporate bankruptcy law? That lies, argues this paper, in rejecting Pareto and Kaldor-Hicks efficiency in favour of a particular conception of transaction cost efficiency, and in rejecting the ‘contractarian’ Creditors’ Bargain Model in favour of the ‘contractualist’ Authentic Consent Model. The paper vindicates these arguments with an analysis of the automatic stay which characterises the collective liquidation regime, of the pari passu principle often said to be at the heart of this regime, and of the liability imposed in some jurisdictions on the managers of terminally distressed companies for failing to take …

Investigation Of De Novo Cholesterol Synthetic Capacity In The Gonads Of Goldfish (Carassius Auratus) Exposed To The Phytosterol Beta-Sitosterol, Rainie L. Sharpe, Melissa Drolet, Deborah L. Maclatchy
Biology Faculty Publications
Total and intra-mitochondrial gonadal cholesterol concentrations are decreased in fish exposed to the phytoestrogen beta-sitosterol (beta-sit). The present study examined the potential for beta-sit to disrupt de novo cholesterol synthesis in the gonads of goldfish exposed to 200 microgram/g beta-sit and 10 microgram/g 17beta-estradiol (E2; estrogenic control) by intra-peritoneal Silastic® implants for 21 days. The de novo cholesterol synthetic capacity was estimated by incubating gonadal tissue with 14C-acetate for a period of 18 hours, followed by chloroform/methanol lipid extraction and thin layer chromatography (TLC) lipid separation. Lipid classes were confirmed using infrared spectroscopy. Plasma testosterone (T) and total cholesterol concentration …
