Chinese Views On Modern Marco Polos: New Foreign Trade Amendments After Wto Accession, Heng Wang Mar 2006

Chinese Views On Modern Marco Polos: New Foreign Trade Amendments After Wto Accession, Heng Wang

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Since China’s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) at the end of 2001, it has made substantial, even heroic, efforts to change its laws and regulations. WTO accession has brought not only amendments to formal written laws, but greater transparency in government administration, enhanced opportunities for Chinese entrepreneurs, and more equal treatment between foreign and domestic business organizations. One crucial step forward is the Duiwai Maoyi Fa 2004 [Foreign Trade Act 2004] (“FTA 2004”), which amended the Duiwai Maoyi Fa 1994 [Foreign Trade Act 1994] (“FTA 1994”). With just over one year’s experience operating under this new foreign trade …

Law, Narrative, And The Continuing Colonist Oppression Of Native Hawaiians, David Barnard Feb 2006

Law, Narrative, And The Continuing Colonist Oppression Of Native Hawaiians, David Barnard

ExpressO

The article does three things. First, and for the first time, it brings to bear the perspectives of critical race theory, postcolonial theory, and narrative theory on the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2000 decision in Rice v. Cayetano, which dealt a severe blow to Native Hawaiians’ struggles for redress and reparations for a century of dispossession and impoverishment at the hands of the United States. Second, it demonstrates in the concrete case of Hawaii the power of a particular historical narrative—when it is accepted uncritically by the Supreme Court—to render the law itself into an instrument of colonial domination. Third, it …

Rhetoricized Constitutionality: Describing -- Defining -- Deciding In Kelo, Marc L. Roark

ExpressO

This essay is about how the Court uses words, how the defining ability of words creates institutional space in which the Court operates, and which defines things beyond the words.

Some New Methodologies For Pattern Recognition Aided By Self-Organizing Maps., Arijit Laha Dr. Feb 2006

Some New Methodologies For Pattern Recognition Aided By Self-Organizing Maps., Arijit Laha Dr.

Doctoral Theses

In this thesis we develop several techniques for performing different pattern recognition tasks. In particular, the pattern recognition tasks considered here are classification and vector quantization. We propose several methods for designing classifiers and address various issues involved in the task. For vector quantization, we develop a method for image compression with superior psychovisual reproduction quality. We also propose a method for fast codebook search in a vector quantizer. We exploit different properties of Self-organizing Map (SOM) network for developing these methods. Along with SOM, we also use fuzzy sets theory and Dempster-Shafer theory of evidence to design classi- fiers …

Spatial Heterogeneity, Predator Cognition, And The Evolution Of Color Polymorphism In Virtual Prey, Alan B. Bond, Alan Kamil Feb 2006

Spatial Heterogeneity, Predator Cognition, And The Evolution Of Color Polymorphism In Virtual Prey, Alan B. Bond, Alan Kamil

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

Cryptically colored prey species are often polymorphic, occurring in multiple distinctive pattern variants. Visual predators promote such phenotypic variation through apostatic selection, in which they attack more abundant prey types disproportionately often. In heterogeneous environments, disruptive selection to match the coloration of disparate habitat patches could also produce polymorphism, but how apostatic and disruptive selection interact in these circumstances is unknown. Here we report the first controlled selection experiment on the evolution of prey coloration on heterogeneous backgrounds, in which blue jays (Cyanocitta cristata) searched for digital moths on mixtures of dark and light patches at three different …

Coordinated Spring Survey Of Mid-Continent Sandhill Cranes Feb 2006

Coordinated Spring Survey Of Mid-Continent Sandhill Cranes

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The aerial transect portion of the coordinated spring survey of mid-continent sandhill cranes was conducted on 23 March in Nebraska’s Platte and North Platte River valleys. The 2005 photo corrected aerial estimate was 491,900 birds. Outside the traditional aerial transect portion, observers utilized both ground and air coverage during the period 5 – 25 March. From this region, observers in the Official Survey Area (OSA) of Nebraska, Kansas, and Texas reported an additional 38,700 cranes. The 2005 total estimate (530,600) increased 18% since 2004 and is the fourth highest in twenty-four years of comparable figures. The current three-year average (2003 …

Identification Of Critical Determinants On Ace2 For Sars-Cov Entry And Development Of A Potent Entry Inhibitor, Dong P. Han, Adam Penn-Nicholson, Michael W. Cho Feb 2006

Identification Of Critical Determinants On Ace2 For Sars-Cov Entry And Development Of A Potent Entry Inhibitor, Dong P. Han, Adam Penn-Nicholson, Michael W. Cho

Faculty Scholarship

Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is caused by a novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV. Virus entry into cells is mediated through interactions between spike (S) glycoprotein and angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2). Alanine scanning mutagenesis analysis was performed to identify determinants on ACE2 critical for SARS-CoV infection. Results indicated that charged amino acids between residues 22 and 57 were important, K26 and D30, in particular. Peptides representing various regions of ACE2 critical for virus infection were chemically synthesized and evaluated for antiviral activity. Two peptides (a.a. 22–44 and 22–57) exhibited a modest antiviral activity with IC(50) of about 50 μM and 6 μM, …

No Direction Home: Will The Law Keep Pace With Human Tracking Technology To Protect Individual Privacy And Stop Geoslavery? , William A. Herbert

ExpressO

The scope and nature of current legal principles regarding individual privacy are not sufficient to respond to the rapid development and use of human tracking technology. The academic use of the phrase “geoslavery” to describe the abusive use of such technology underscores the power of the new technology. This article examines the use of such technology under current federal and state law and suggests potential means for developing greater legal protections against the abusive use of the technology and the intrusion into personal privacy.

The primary legal source for protections against governmental intrusion into an individual’s privacy stem from various …

Sex Determination Of Red-Tailed Hawks (Buteo Jamaicensis Calurus) Using Dna Analysis And Morphometrics, Kara C. Donohue, Alfred M. Dufty Jr. Feb 2006

Sex Determination Of Red-Tailed Hawks (Buteo Jamaicensis Calurus) Using Dna Analysis And Morphometrics, Kara C. Donohue, Alfred M. Dufty Jr.

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Currently the sex of Red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis) cannot be determined by in-hand methods. Males and females do not differ in plumage and overlap in size. During migration, we collected feather samples and morphological measurements from birds at four sites in the Western United States. Sex was determined for individual birds using sex-specific DNA markers and Polymerase Chain Reaction was used to identify these DNA markers. Through Discriminant Function Analysis, we created equations for determining the sex of Red-tailed hawks using in-hand measurements based on the DNA-determined sexes. We formed two equations, one for adults, which was 98% …
