Challenges And Opportunities In Finfish Nutrition, Jesse Trushenski, Craig Kasper, Christopher Kohler Apr 2006

Challenges And Opportunities In Finfish Nutrition, Jesse Trushenski, Craig Kasper, Christopher Kohler

Publications

Much of the criticism leveled at aquaculture (e.g., dependency on animal-derived feedstuffs, nutrient-laden effluent discharges, and increased organic contamination in edible products) can be traced to the feeds in use. Accordingly, finfish nutritionists are being challenged to formulate feeds that not only meet the nutritional requirements of livestock but also minimize production costs, limit environmental impacts, and enhance product quality. These challenges not only add considerable complexity to finfish nutrition but also afford opportunities to avoid some of the mistakes made by other industries in the past. From a review of the current status of finfish nutrition with respect to …

A Cheese By Any Other Name: A Palatable Compromise To The Conflict Over Geographical Indications, Ivy Doster Apr 2006

A Cheese By Any Other Name: A Palatable Compromise To The Conflict Over Geographical Indications, Ivy Doster

Vanderbilt Law Review

In many grocery stores, shoppers must look in two places to find cheese. The first cheese section is usually near the dairy case; the second is often a specialty cheese case located in the produce department. Why make harried supermarket shoppers rush back and forth between two locations to find what they need for a fondue? The most noticeable difference between the cheeses in the two cases is probably the price: cheeses in the specialty case are generally much more expensive. A second difference is the packaging: many cheeses in the dairy aisle are pre-grated, pre-shredded, or pre-sliced and individually …

Disillusioned Identity--Not So Funny: The Influence Of Other Selves In "Funnyhouse Of A Negro", Amanda Recupido '07

The Delta

Living in a country that prides itself on its citizens' rich blend of cultural backgrounds, one may underestimate the uneasiness some have fitting into the greater society-an idea that is explored in "Funnyhouse of a Negro." The play depicts a damaged relationship between Negro-Sarah and the broader society; she becomes isolated through her other selves and enters into an altered state of reality that is established by her self-hatred generated from denial of her heritage and an inability to reach her aspiration of whiteness. Her self-hatred accumulates in direct relation to the surmounting influence of her self-created identities, causing her …

Math In The George Middle School, Tiffany D. Lothrop

Action Research Projects

In this action research study of my classroom of 7th grade mathematics, I investigated uses of technology in my classroom essential in teaching and learning middle school mathematics. I explored how to enhance student involvement in learning and how to use problem-solving activities to build new mathematical knowledge, to applying knowledge and to adapt a variety of appropriate problem-solving strategies to daily life, AYP and STARS standards. I discovered that about 80% of the students reported that they liked having technology used in their math classroom, and that they feel more confident when problem solving in math with the use …

A Clearing In The Forest: Infusing The Labor Union Dues Dispute With First Amendment Values, Harry G. Hutchinson Apr 2006

A Clearing In The Forest: Infusing The Labor Union Dues Dispute With First Amendment Values, Harry G. Hutchinson

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

This article deploys public choice theory and postmodem identity claims to develop a far-reaching understanding of the union dues dispute, which suggests that the burden of proof on the existence of and/or the possibility of an enduring union community should be placed on proponents of this view. While the postmodern project can be seen as an unsettled approach that is riven by coherency issues, not the least, its insistence on offering the good without the true, it supplies modest benefits by revealing the conceivably infinite varieties of human preferences in contemporary America. The absence of preference convergence, understood from the …

Peptide Yy And Proglucagon Mrna Expression Patterns And Regulation In The Gut, Jun Zhou, Maren Hegsted, Kathleen L. Mccutcheon, Michael J. Keenan, Aochun Xi, Anne M. Raggio, Roy J. Martin

Faculty Publications

Objective: Peptide YY (PYY) and glucagon-like peptide-1 are important in the control of energy homeostasis and are both secreted from the gut in response to ingested nutrients. However, more studies are needed on nutrient regulation of their gene expression patterns in specific areas of the gut. This study detailed PYY and proglucagon (the gene that encodes glucagon-like peptide-1) gene expression patterns and regulation in the gut. We further examined the regulation of PYY and proglucagon mRNA by a diet containing fermentation- resistant starch (in vivo) and butyrate (in vitro). Research Methods and Procedures: Quantitative real time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction …

Lung Circulation Modeling: Status And Prospect, Anne V. Clough, Said H. Audi, Robert C. Molthen, Gary S. Krenz

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Mathematical modeling has been used to interpret anatomical and physiological data obtained from metabolic and hemodynamic studies aimed at investigating structure-function relationships in the vasculature of the lung, and how these relationships are affected by lung injury and disease. The indicator dilution method was used to study the activity of redox processes within the lung. A steady-state model of the data was constructed and used to show that pulmonary endothelial cells may play an important role in reducing redox active compounds and that those reduction rates can be altered with oxidative stress induced by exposure to high oxygen environments. In …

Behavioral Genetics And Crime, In Context, Owen D. Jones Apr 2006

Behavioral Genetics And Crime, In Context, Owen D. Jones

Law and Contemporary Problems

Jones explains the relationship between behavioral genetics and other disciplines in behavioral biology. He compares the potential contributions of behavioral genetics and behavioral ecology and suggests how the diverging efforts could be joined. He also notes that criminal law is but one of many fields of law potentially affected by behavioral genetics.

The Contradictory Definitions Of Heterochromatin: Transcription And Silencing, Kathryn Huisinga, Brent Brower-Toland, Sarah C.R. Elgin Apr 2006

The Contradictory Definitions Of Heterochromatin: Transcription And Silencing, Kathryn Huisinga, Brent Brower-Toland, Sarah C.R. Elgin

Biology Faculty Research

Eukaryotic genomes are packaged in two general varieties of chromatin: gene-rich euchromatin and gene-poor heterochromatin. Each type of chromatin has been defined by the presence of distinct chromosomal proteins and posttranslational histone modifications. This review addresses recent findings that appear to blur the definitions of euchromatin and heterochromatin by pointing to the presence of typically heterochromatic modifications (including H3K9me) in euchromatin and typically euchromatic enzymes (including RNA polymerases) in heterochromatin. We discuss the implications of these new findings for the current definition of heterochromatin.
