Induction Of Experimental Autoimmune Thyroiditis (Eat) In Sprague-Dawley Rats And Measurements Of Severity Of Eat Using Scanning Electron Microscopy, Claudio Miguel Fernandez
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
As early as the 1950’s it was shown that animals as mice, rats, guinea pigs, and monkeys that received one injection of xenogeneic thyroglobulin emulsified in Complete Freund’s Adjuvant (CFA) developed Experimental Autoimmune Thyroiditis (EAT) (Voller et al., 1980). The damage reported was destruction of the thyroid follicles, and infiltration of the thyroid by macrophages, neutrophils, and lymphocytes. An injection of Bordetella pertussis proved to enhance the incidence and severity of EAT in animal models. Bordetella pertussis is no longer manufactured in large quantities, and it is extremely difficult to purchase. Therefore, a different procedure had to be developed that …

A Preliminary Benthic Invertebrate Study Of Jun Jaegyu Volcano : An Undersea Volcano In Antarctic Sound, Antarctica, Gina QuiñOnes
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Jun Jaegyu volcano, an Antarctic submarine volcano, was dredged in May 2004 for sediment and marine macroinvertebrates. The objectives of this study were to examine the benthic assemblages and biodiversity present on the newly discovered volcano. The volcano is located on the continental shelf of the northeastern Antarctic Peninsula, where recent changes in surface temperature and ice shelf stability have been observed. This volcano was swath-mapped during cruise 01 -07 of the Research Vessel-Ice Breaker Nathaniel B. Palmer. The volcano was studied using a SCUD video camera and a dredge along the flanks and crest. Results indicate a seafloor surface …

"MíO Cid" Revisited From Middle Ages To Postmodernity : Freedom And Transgression In Medieval Structures Of Servitude, Alina Bengochea
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
A Habitat Suitability Index Model For Black Bear Living Within The Kittatinny Mountain Range In New Jersey, Brett Callanan
A Habitat Suitability Index Model For Black Bear Living Within The Kittatinny Mountain Range In New Jersey, Brett Callanan
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Throughout the past decade, an increase in urbanization and the population of black bear (Ursus americanus) in New Jersey have caused an overlap of bear habitat and areas of residential and commercial development (Eriksen 1999). Consequently, the close proximity of humans to black bear has resulted in a variety of conflicts (Carr and Burguess 2003). Strategies traditionally used to regulate the numbers and interactions with bear, such as capture and relocation, euthanization, and the utilization of game hunts can be limited by their efficiency and predictability of results. New tools are needed to address the issues of habitat loss, bear …

Ionotropic Glutamate Receptors Show Unique Distribution And Localization In The Dorsal Cochlear Nucleus Of The Rhesus Monkey, Kristin A. Coppola
Ionotropic Glutamate Receptors Show Unique Distribution And Localization In The Dorsal Cochlear Nucleus Of The Rhesus Monkey, Kristin A. Coppola
Honors Scholar Theses
The dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN) receives auditory information via the auditory nerve coming from the cochlea. It is responsible for much of the integration of auditory information, and it projects this auditory information to higher auditory brain centers for further processing. This study focuses on the DCN of adult Rhesus monkeys to characterize two specific cell types, the fusiform and cartwheel cell, based on morphometric parameters and type of glutamate receptor they express. The fusiform cell is the main projection neuron, while the cartwheel cell is the main inhibitory interneuron. Expression of AMPA glutamate receptor subunits is localized to certain …

“From Margin To Center”: Processes And Relationships To Participation One Woman’S Ethnographic Journey Mirrored Through Community Research, Melise D. Huggins
Journal of International Women's Studies
In the closing two years of my doctoral degree that spanned ten years of my life, I was asked by a mentor to write a personal essay on my academic experiences at the university. That essay follows and is printed here not without the accompanying editing that marshaled its own questioning, self-reflection and analysis that comes with distance, wisdom, and the editor of a juried journal.
I was concerned to give a revisionist accounting now, another five or six years after the writing of the essay, to explain what my perspective was then as a disaffected African- American ABD (all …

Using Expressing Sequence Tags To Improve Gene Structure Annotation, Chaochun Wei, Michael R. Brent
All Computer Science and Engineering Research
Finding all gene structures is a crucial step in obtaining valuable information from genomic sequences. It is still a challenging problem, especially for vertebrate genomes, such as the human genome. Expressed Sequence Tags (ESTs) provide a tremendous resource for determining intron-exon structures. However, they are short and error prone, which prevents existing methods from exploiting EST information efficiently. This dissertation addresses three aspects of using ESTs for gene structure annotation. The first aspect is using ESTs to improve de novo gene prediction. Probability models are introduced for EST alignments to genomic sequence in exons, introns, interknit regions, splice sites and …

Merck Kgaa V. Integra Lifesciences I, Ltd.: Does The Breadth Of Safe Harbor Protection Toll The Death Knell For Biotech Research Companies?, Tiffany L. Williams
Mercer Law Review
In Merck KGaA v. Integra Lifesciences I, Ltd., the United States Supreme Court held that use of patented inventions during research where there was a reasonable basis for believing that the experiments would produce information relevant to Food and Drug Administration ("FDA") approval was protected from patent infringement lawsuits under 35 U.S.C. § 271(e)(1), commonly referred to as the "safe harbor" provision. This decision affirmed almost two decades of judicial decisions affording broad interpretation to the safe harbor provision and reversed the Federal Circuit's creation of a bright-line test limiting the scope of section 271(e)(1).
Title Iii Of The Americans With Disabilities Act Applies To Foreign Cruise Ships; But What Exactly Is Required?, Samantha Allison Dipolito
Title Iii Of The Americans With Disabilities Act Applies To Foreign Cruise Ships; But What Exactly Is Required?, Samantha Allison Dipolito
Mercer Law Review
In Spector v. Norwegian Cruise Line, the United States Supreme Court held that Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (the "ADA") applies to foreign-flag cruise ships in American waters insofar as the requirements of Title III do not interfere with the internal order of the cruise ships. Additionally, the Court held that the provision of the ADA requiring barrier removal, which is "readily achievable" does not apply if the removal would bring a ship into noncompliance with international legal obligations. The dissenting opinion argues that Title III of the ADA does not apply to foreign cruise ships …

Directing Rhinoceros, Erin Schultz
Directing Rhinoceros, Erin Schultz
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
For my honors thesis, I am directing the play Rhinoceros by Eugene Ionesco. Ionesco wrote this play after World War II to artistically explore how something as terrible as the Holocaust, Fascism, and the Nazi party could be allowed control and power in society. How could people allow themselves and others to turn into wild beasts? Rhinoceros is an absurdist play, with characters literally turning into violent rhinos, symbolically allowing violence to overtake them.
The play explores the behavior of people facing and exploring groupthink, apathy, and standing up for one’s own beliefs in the face of opposition. I think …

My thesis project was the process of adapting the script and music, rehearsing, performing, and producing an original one-woman show. The production is called “La Petite Piaf” and is based on events in the life of Edith Piaf. I adapted, produced, starred in an original one-woman show. It ran seventy-five minutes without an intermission and consisted of dialogue in English and fifteen songs in French. I portrayed Edith Piaf. I oversaw every element of the production. I was in charge of my marketing, finding a performance space, securing dates, hiring a pianist, stage manager, and run crew, finding a lighting …

I Am What I Wear: The Use Of Dress In Constructing And Evaluating Sexual Identity, Jean Stevens
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
This thesis explores different disciplinary studies and discussions of dress, and more specifically, the use of dress in constructing a gendered identity and sexual identity. To conduct this research, I performed a literature review and referenced various social psychological, sociological, and/or feminist theoretical frameworks. I argue that dress cannot serve as any sort of innate or accurate indicator of sexual identity; rather, the meanings associated with dress are socially produced and vary across time and place. Evidence for this argument emerges only after a literature review, as one can recognize a common theme linking the literature, or perhaps a commonly …

My overall intention of this project was use the Honors Thesis Project to apply what I have learned while studying art video to create a collection of successful videos that allow me to work above and beyond the art video curriculum. I was eager to work independently on a long-term project, and the Honors Thesis Project provided me with both an exciting and challenging opportunity to display my academic initiative and creative drive.
Upon completion of the thesis project, I selected six video art pieces that I felt were most successful and relevant to the project theme. The theme of …
Possibilities Of Glutamate-Mediated Synaptic Like Activity In Somatosensory Mechanoreceptors Such As Pacinian Corpuscles?, Kevin Kopko
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Pacinian Corpuscles (PCs) are somatosensory mechanoreceptors, composed of a central neurite, surrounded by layers of lamellae that make up the inner core, which are specialized glial cells, and fibroblast derived outer-core lamellae of the surrounding capsule. Several components specific to a chemical synapse (Vglut1, Vamp1, SNAP-23) were localized to both the neurite and the inner-core cells in feline mesenteric PCs using immunocytochemistry. However, it has long been postulated that the first synapse of the PC occurs at the dorsal column nuclei, or spinal cord, and that no classical synapse is present in the distal ending of the capsulated receptor. While …
Intracellular Signaling: How Do Cells Respond To Single And Multiple Inputs, Latoya Crayton
Intracellular Signaling: How Do Cells Respond To Single And Multiple Inputs, Latoya Crayton
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
One important biological question is how the cell processes input information and decides what to respond. The cell can integrate the multiple inputs using linear and nonlinear dynamics to generate an appropriate output. This study focuses on the computerized recording of phototaxis (movement in relation to light direction) of Chlamydomonas cell populations response to green light, which activates the rhodopsin photoreceptor at their eyespots. The inputs are light stimulation of various wavelengths and intensities; and chemicals (IBMX, a PDE inhibitor; 2'5'-dideoxyadenosine, an adenylate cyclase inhibitor, 8-Br-cAMP-Na and Dibutyryl cAMP, cAMP analogs) affecting an important intracellular messenger, cAMP. The quantified output …
Tears Of A Clown, Adam Knobler
Tears Of A Clown, Adam Knobler
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
For my honors thesis project, I chose to write a screenplay entitled, “Tears of a Clown”. This story, which is roughly based on my life, is about two clowns who wind up falling in love and working together in the circus. This story loosely shadows my life in the sense that I myself wanted to pursue a career in standup comedy rather than clowning. The main difference between my life and the life of the main character was that despite the fact that I did not fail at being a standup comedian, I chose to pursue an alternative route of …
Gene Deletion In Yeast That Affects Mitochondrial Dna Stability, Function And Maintenance, Rachel Charron
Gene Deletion In Yeast That Affects Mitochondrial Dna Stability, Function And Maintenance, Rachel Charron
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
The study of genomic analysis of deletion mutants in Saccharomyces cerevisiae associated with mitochondrial genome stability has produced both genetic and biochemical findings to be applied to the study of many mitochondrial genetic disorders in humans. Saccharomyces cerevisiae has approximately 6,200 ORFs in its genome. Of the 6,200 ORFs, 4,878 are non-essential. The EuroScarf deletion project removed all the non-essential ORFs, of the 4,878 viable haploid strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and replaced them with the G418 resistance cassette. A subset of 700 deletion mutants that were previously identified as important for mitochondrial function and biogenesis was compiled from the …
Preparation And Purification Of Enlarged Multinucleated U937 Human Leukemia Cells And Their Susceptibility To Physical Damage By Ultrasound, Kathryn Gold
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Multinucleation occurs in neoplastic cells that have been treated with cytochalasin B, a fungal toxin that disrupts actin microfilament structures. When the actin cytoskeleton is disrupted, contractile ring formation and cytokinesis are inhibited. In normal cells cytochalasin B prevents the cells from entering the cell cycle. However in neoplastic cells, since cytokinesis no longer occurs, the dividing cell becomes enlarged and heavily multinucleated. We propose that enlarged leukemia cells may be more sensitive to ultrasound treatment because of their increased size and weakened cytoskeletal structure. To determine the differential chemical and physical response of enlarged, multinucleated cells in comparison with …

“Hippos” is the Greek word for horse. “Hippotherapy” literally means treatment with the help of the horse. In this field specially trained, licensed physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech language pathologists use the special nature of a horse to help clients meet their therapy needs. This project investigates the process of making therapeutic progress on horseback. It describes the field of hippotherapy and presents a new saddle design to make the process of therapy more effective. My design process started out with broad user research. Video camera in hand, I went to observe a form of hippotherapy called Adaptive Riding …

The Food Fight Between The United States And Europe: Why Gmos Divide The West, Sarah A. Delude
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) have quickly become an abundant source of food, especially in the United States. But as GMOs have grown, Europeans have raised major concerns over health and environment issues posed by GMOs. In 1998 the European Union imposed a moratorium restricting the approval of any new GMOs in Europe. But the United States saw this as a block to free and fair trade and has taken a case up with the World Trade Organization to resolve the matter. The final decision is past due, but the EU has already lifted the moratorium. Instead, it has imposed rules …

Catalase Activity Mediates The Inhibitory Actions Of 24,25 Dihydroxyvitamin D3, Sven L. Peery
Catalase Activity Mediates The Inhibitory Actions Of 24,25 Dihydroxyvitamin D3, Sven L. Peery
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The steroid hormone 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1,25(OH)2D3] rapidly stimulates the uptake of phosphate in isolated chick intestinal cells, while the steroid 24,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [24,25(OH)2D3] inhibits the rapid stimulation by 1,25(OH)2D3. Earlier work in this laboratory has indicated that a cellular binding protein for the 24,25(OH)2D3 is the enzyme catalase. Since binding resulted in decreased catalase activity and increased H2O2 production, studies were undertaken to determine if pro-oxidant conditions mimicked the inhibitory actions of 24,25(OH)2D3, and anti-oxidant conditions …
Portrayal Of Disabilities In Caldecott Books, Tina Taylor, Mary Anne Prater, Jennifer Jenson
Portrayal Of Disabilities In Caldecott Books, Tina Taylor, Mary Anne Prater, Jennifer Jenson
Faculty Publications
The authors read all of the books that received Caldecott Medal and Honor status awarded between 1938 and 2005 and found that 11 included a character with a disability. For each book, they analyzed characterizations of those with disabilities and generated tips for using the book to teach about disabilities. They argue that accurate portrayals of characters with disabilities, particularly the types of disabilities encountered most frequently by young children, are needed in award-winning picture books.
