Chaucer's Scatological Art In Three Fabliaux, William Brennan Rutledge May 2006

Chaucer's Scatological Art In Three Fabliaux, William Brennan Rutledge

Theses and Dissertations

Chaucer's fabliaux, particularly The Miller's Tale, The Merchant's Tale, and The Summoner's Tale, combine the crude humor associated with the genre with features of ?higher? genres, most notably the courtly romance tradition (for the first two tales), and the homiletic and scholarly debate traditions (for the last tale). The marriage of the scatology present in fabliaux with the characteristics of literary art is Chaucer's unique achievement and differentiates his tales from their analogues. This marriage occurs when characters of one class arrogate the types of discourse usually associated with another class. As a result of this discourse switching, the balancing …

Dissolution Caves Of Mississippi, Christopher Michael Moore May 2006

Dissolution Caves Of Mississippi, Christopher Michael Moore

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this project was to distinguish between the karst and pseudokarst caves throughout Mississippi, create an inventory and survey of representative caves and karst features, identify the geology of the rocks hosting the caves, and produce a GIS-based digital karst map. The State of Mississippi is not known for its karst features, yet there are three distinct limestone units that contain dissolution caves: 1) Paleozoic (Mississippian) Tuscumbia Formation limestone; 2) Mesozoic carbonate units; and 3) Cenozoic limestone, Marianna Formation. There are a total of 44 caves known within the state based on past documentation, however the caves listed …

Diversity In Action: Protesting Abortion In Mississippi, Jonelle Henry Husain May 2006

Diversity In Action: Protesting Abortion In Mississippi, Jonelle Henry Husain

Theses and Dissertations

Abortion remains a controversial contemporary social issue, spawning disparate and strongly held opinions among the American public. Pro-life activists play a central role in opposing abortion, mobilizing a disinterested public to public activism, and collectively working to restrict abortion access. This study focused on pro-life activism in Mississippi, the state with the most restrictive laws governing abortion, abortion clinics, and abortion doctors. Contrary to previous studies and media portrayals that homogenize pro-life activists and public pro-life activism, I find that diversity, rather than consensus, characterizes Mississippi pro-life activists who engage in public activism and direct action to stop abortion. Specifically, …

Performance Of The Flat Walking Tennessee Walking Horse Yearling Before And After A 60-Day Strength Training Regime, Kirsten Michelle Holt May 2006

Performance Of The Flat Walking Tennessee Walking Horse Yearling Before And After A 60-Day Strength Training Regime, Kirsten Michelle Holt

Theses and Dissertations

The influence of a 60-day strength training regime on the flat walking Tennessee Walking Horse (TWH) yearling performance was determined using behavioral, physiological, and biomechanical measurements. Four TWH yearlings participated in a 60-day strength training regime. Documentation was made on behavioral responses, and measurements were taken on respiratory rates and standing and flat walking kinematics. Means (SD) were determined for physiological and biomechanical variables, and paired t-tests (P=0.05) were performed. Morphometrics, kinematics, and temporal variables remained constant through training. The flat walk shared similar kinematics and temporal variables with the walk, except for the rhythm, bipedal support, head displacements, and …

Conservation Of Waste Rice And Estimates Of Moist-Soil Seed Abundance For Wintering Waterfowl In The Mississippi Alluvial Valley, Jennifer Kross May 2006

Conservation Of Waste Rice And Estimates Of Moist-Soil Seed Abundance For Wintering Waterfowl In The Mississippi Alluvial Valley, Jennifer Kross

Theses and Dissertations

Waste rice in harvested fields and natural seeds in moist-soil wetlands are important foods for waterfowl in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley (MAV). Waste rice declines significantly between harvest and late autumn. I conducted experiments in 19 rice fields in Arkansas and Mississippi during autumns 2003 and 2004 to evaluate the ability of common post-harvest practices to conserve waste rice between harvest and late autumn. Greatest mean abundance of waste rice in late autumn occurred in standing stubble (x&95 = 105 kg/ha; CL = 72.84, 150.16 kg/ha) followed by burned (x&95 = 72 kg/ha; 49.57, 105.81 kg/ha), mowed (x&95 = 67 …

On The Origin And Functions Of Rna-Mediated Silencing: From Protists To Man, Heriberto D. Cerutti, Juan Casas-Mollano May 2006

On The Origin And Functions Of Rna-Mediated Silencing: From Protists To Man, Heriberto D. Cerutti, Juan Casas-Mollano

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Double-stranded RNA has been shown to induce gene silencing in diverse eukaryotes and by a variety of pathways. We have examined the taxonomic distribution and the phylogenetic relationship of key components of the RNA interference (RNAi) machinery in members of five eukaryotic supergroups. On the basis of the parsimony principle, our analyses suggest that a relatively complex RNAi machinery was already present in the last common ancestor of eukaryotes and consisted, at a minimum, of one Argonaute-like polypeptide, one Piwi-like protein, one Dicer, and one RNA-dependent RNA polymerase. As proposed before, the ancestral (but non-essential) role of these components may …

Interview No. 1183, Irene Solis

Combined Interviews

Ms. Solis recalls that there was no rain during the 1957 sowing season, which left them with no food or money; her husband, Fernando Barrios Domínguez, and other men from town tried to enlist in the bracero program, but they did not make it; later that same year they were able to travel to Monterrey, Nuevo León, México, and obtain a contract; although he never spoke much about his experiences, Irene recalls hearing her father-in-law assert that the men only left home out of necessity; moreover, he repeated that they were treated worse than animals while having to endure being …

Thioredoxin Reductase 1 Deficiency Reverses Tumor Phenotype And Tumorigenicity Of Lung Carcinoma Cells, Min-Hyuk Yoo, Xue-Ming Xu, Bradley A. Carlson, Vadim N. Gladyshev, Dolph L. Hatfield May 2006

Thioredoxin Reductase 1 Deficiency Reverses Tumor Phenotype And Tumorigenicity Of Lung Carcinoma Cells, Min-Hyuk Yoo, Xue-Ming Xu, Bradley A. Carlson, Vadim N. Gladyshev, Dolph L. Hatfield

Vadim Gladyshev Publications

Dietary selenium has potent cancer prevention activity. Both low molecular weight selenocompounds and selenoproteins are implicated in this effect. Thioredoxin reductase 1 (TR1) is one of the major antioxidant and redox regulators in mammals that supports p53 function and other tumor suppressor activities. However, this selenium-containing oxidoreductase is also overexpressed in many malignant cells and has been proposed as a target for cancer therapy. To further assess the role of TR1 in the malignancy process, we used RNA interference technology to decrease its expression in mouse lung carcinoma (LLC1) cells. Stable transfection of LLC1 cells with a small interfering RNA …

Mutations Affecting Beta-Tubulin Folding And Degradation, Yaqing Wang, Guoling Tian, Nicholas J Cowan, Fernando Cabral May 2006

Mutations Affecting Beta-Tubulin Folding And Degradation, Yaqing Wang, Guoling Tian, Nicholas J Cowan, Fernando Cabral

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Revertants of a colcemid-resistant Chinese hamster ovary cell line with an altered (D45Y) beta-tubulin have allowed the identification of four cis-acting mutations (L187R, Y398C, a 12-amino acid in-frame deletion, and a C-terminal truncation) that act by destabilizing the mutant tubulin and preventing it from incorporating into microtubules. These unstable beta-tubulins fail to form heterodimers and are predominantly found in association with the chaperonin CCT, suggesting that they cannot undergo productive folding. In agreement with these in vivo observations, we show that the defective beta-tubulins do not stably interact with cofactors involved in the tubulin folding pathway and, hence, fail to …

Regulation Of E(Spl) Gene Expression During Development, Morgan L. Maeder May 2006

Regulation Of E(Spl) Gene Expression During Development, Morgan L. Maeder

Biology Honors Papers

The Notch pathway, a crucial developmental signaling system, acts to direct the fates of individual cells in many organisms and has also been implicated in a wide range of human diseases. Notch signaling plays a vital role in cell fate decisions in almost every tissue type ranging from the skin to the nervous and vascular systems. Aberrant Notch signaling has been implicated as a cause of many diseases, including a variety of cancers. Activation of the Notch receptor releases a Notch intracellular domain into the nucleus, where it binds with a transcription factor, Suppressor of Hairless (Su(H))to create an active …

Female Hormonal Influences On Stress- And Drug-Induced Reinstatement Of Extinguished Amphetamine-Induced Conditioned Place Preference, Melissa Elaine Bleile May 2006

Female Hormonal Influences On Stress- And Drug-Induced Reinstatement Of Extinguished Amphetamine-Induced Conditioned Place Preference, Melissa Elaine Bleile

Dissertations

One Animal paradigm used to study addiction is conditioned place preference. CPP is achieved when an animal develops a preference for environmental stimuli previously paired with subjective effects of a rewarding drug. Women may experience greater drug sensitivity than men, most likely due to estrogen levels. The purpose of this experiment was to assess the effects of female sex hormones on drug sensitivity and their interaction with the primary factors causing relapse, stress or drug re-exposure. Female rats were ovariectomized and received replacement hormones to control circulating hormone levels. These groups of animals were tested for amphetamine (AMPH)-induced CPP and …

Niche To Mainstream In Sustainable Urban Food Systems: The Case Of Food Distribution In Portland, Oregon, Bowen Close

Pomona Senior Theses

To address the negative environmental, political, and social consequences of the dominant, industrialized global food system, communities around the world have developed goals and values underlying a sustainable food system. Conceptualizing food production, distribution, and consumption as systems helps clarify the ways food affects social and natural environments, with the distribution element as the critical juncture where the product reaches the consumer. Urban food systems are a particularly important environment in which to study movements toward sustainability. This paper focuses on the movement for a sustainable food system in Portland, Oregon, with particular focus on the city’s markets for …

Distributed Computation In An Interactive Entertainment Environment, Robert Zinchak May 2006

Distributed Computation In An Interactive Entertainment Environment, Robert Zinchak

Computer Science Honors Theses

The proliferation of multiplayer games has led to an increase in the total network capacity for processing power in games; this capacity, however, is seldom fully utilized or balanced. One prominent problem of distributed processing in a gaming environment is increased latency time-- which causes player disinterest in the game, potentially causing poor sales as well as the termination of future commercial development of this technology. Existing distributed techniques such as OpenMP, MPI or VMPI are not well suited to gaming applications and may introduce additional overhead. This thesis describes a simple, yet effective technique (based on existing ideas in …

The Influence Of Habitat Features On Selection And Use Of A Winter Refuge By Manatees (Trichechus Manatus Latirostris) In Charlotte Harbor, Florida, Sheri L. Barton May 2006

The Influence Of Habitat Features On Selection And Use Of A Winter Refuge By Manatees (Trichechus Manatus Latirostris) In Charlotte Harbor, Florida, Sheri L. Barton

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Investigating alternate winter refuges for Florida manatees is increasingly important

as sustained warm-water discharges from industrial and some natural sites becomes more

uncertain. This study examined habitat features of possible importance to manatees by

comparing a winter refuge in Charlotte Harbor, FL (the Matlacha Isles canal system) to

two nearby, seemingly similar sites that are not frequented by manatees during winter.

Water temperature, salinity, boat traffic, canal depth, and tidal flushing were assessed at

these sites. Additionally, this study examined when and how manatees use the Matlacha

Isles refuge by documenting movements, habitat use, and behaviors of manatees during

the …

An Interim Report Of The Viking Age Archaeofauna From Hrísheimar, Mývatn District, N Iceland, Thomas H. Mcgovern, Sophia Perdikaris, Ramona Harrison, Konrad Smiarowski, Norie Manigault

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

The excavations at Hrísheimar in Mývatnssveit in N Iceland are producing a very large archaeofauna, which can now be dated through both radiocarbon and two major volcanic tephra layers (the Landnám tephra of ca AD 871 and the Veiðivötn 930 tephra). While much of the site has been destroyed by wind erosion, substantial midden deposits (which overly earlier structures in some cases) still remain along the NE edge of the site area. While excavation is ongoing and only a small portion of the very substantial archaeofauna has been analyzed so far, it may be useful to present an interim working …

Artificial Societies, Virtual Worlds, And Their Meaningful Integration, Andrew Krausnick May 2006

Artificial Societies, Virtual Worlds, And Their Meaningful Integration, Andrew Krausnick

Computer Science Honors Theses

Artificial societies and virtual worlds are two areas of interest to modern social scientists that are distinctly separate in modern academic study, and are yet undeniably related. Artificial societies are multi-agent systems comprised of autonomous social agents, programmed with their own set of rules and behavior. While virtual worlds are occupied in large part by human controlled agents participating in a collective virtual experience and space. Within both types of virtual environments there can be found a scarcity of resources and intricate cross-entity interaction. This often results in the development and evolution of complex economic and cultural structures. In addition, …
