Diapause Aggregations In Stenotarsus Sp. (Endomychidae), June 2006, Alison Bernhardt
Diapause Aggregations In Stenotarsus Sp. (Endomychidae), June 2006, Alison Bernhardt
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Stenotarsus sp. (Endomychidae, Coleoptera) are handsome fungus beetles, which feed on fungus and rotten wood. The genus Stenotarsus is well known for its formation of large aggregations often composed of several layers, during diapause. Stenotarsus sp. has been shown to form these aggregations for mating purposes, predator avoidance and water conservation. Therefore, given these reasons for aggregating this study predicts that larger individuals will have an advantage at acquiring positions low in the stacks and towards the center where they are less likely to be picked off by predators and will have an advantage in conserving water. This study also …
Narratives Of Developing Counsellors’ Preferred Theories Of Counselling Storied Through Text, Metaphor, And Photographic Images, Gina Wong-Wylie
Narratives Of Developing Counsellors’ Preferred Theories Of Counselling Storied Through Text, Metaphor, And Photographic Images, Gina Wong-Wylie
The Qualitative Report
Reflective practice is integral for developing counsellors to maintain self- awareness and to recognize influences upon one’s personal theory of counselling. In this exploratory narrative inquiry research, four doctoral level counselling psychologists participated to uncover “What are the personal stories of developing counsellors and in what ways are lived stories reflective of counsellors' personal theories of counselling?" The researcher employed a butterfly metaphor, and photographs to illustrate lived stories. Dawn, East, Crystal, Sean, and the researcher’s own lived stories elucidated personal counselling theories and approaches. The view that all theories are constructed portraits of theorists' lives is substantiated. A strong …
Explant Analysis Of Total Disc Replacement, Paul A. Anderson, Steven M. Kurtz, Jeffrey M. Toth
Explant Analysis Of Total Disc Replacement, Paul A. Anderson, Steven M. Kurtz, Jeffrey M. Toth
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Explant analysis of human disc prostheses allow early evaluation of the host response to the prosthesis and the response of the prosthesis from the host. Furthermore, early predictions of failure and wear can be obtained. Thus far, about 2-3% of disc prostheses have been removed. Observed wear patterns are similar to that of appendicular prostheses including abrasions/scratching, burnishing, surface deformation, fatigue, and embedded debris. Chemically the polymeric components have shown little degradation in short-term implantation. In metal on metal prostheses the histologic responses consist of large numbers of metallic particles with occasional macrophages and giant cells. Only rare cases of …

Effects Of Advancing Age On Er Calcium Regulation In Rat Superior Cervical Ganglia, Conwin Kodel Vanterpool
Effects Of Advancing Age On Er Calcium Regulation In Rat Superior Cervical Ganglia, Conwin Kodel Vanterpool
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Intracellular calcium ([Ca2+]i) release from endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stores plays an important role in cell signaling. These stores are rapidly refilled via voltage-gated calcium channels or spontaneously via store-operated calcium channels and subsequent pumping by ER Ca2+-ATPases. Calcium release is triggered by the activation of the ryanodine receptor (RyR) channels and their function is in part dependent on their expression. We analyzed the [Ca2+]i transients in fura 2-loaded superior cervical ganglion (SCG) cells from 6, 12, 20, and 24-month-old Fischer 344 rats for their ability to rapidly and spontaneously refill. For rapid refilling, the …

Bone Morphogenic Protein Induced Repair Of The Premaxillary Cleft, Rick J. Rawson
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the bony augmentation of premaxillary clefts in humans using recombinant bone morphogenic protein (rhBMP-2) in a collagen sponge carrier. 12 patients with unilateral cleft alveolar ridges were evaluated pre- and 4 months postoperatively. 10 patients were repaired with rhBMP-2 while two others were grafted with anterior iliac crest particulate marrow cancellous bone (PMCB). Computed tomographic studies were used to evaluate preoperative alveolar cleft volumes, postoperative bone bridge volumes, and pre/post operative volume ratios.
A pre/post operative volume ratio for patients repaired with rhBMP-2 ranged from 24.1% to 90.6% with a mean of …
The Effect Of Calcium Hydroxide Pastes On Root Dentin Fracture Resistance, Kurt W. Sturz
The Effect Of Calcium Hydroxide Pastes On Root Dentin Fracture Resistance, Kurt W. Sturz
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Calcium hydroxide is a common intracanal medicament used in the treatment of immature teeth that have been subjected to trauma or decay prior to root canal therapy. The effect of calcium hydroxide on immature root dentin is important. One area of concern is the effect that calcium hydroxide has on the fracture resistance of an immature tooth. It is the aim of this study to compare the effect of four different commercially available calcium hydroxide pastes on the fracture resistance of bovine teeth. Seventy-five freshly extracted, intact bovine incisors were prepared according to a modified Haapasalo and Orstavik technique. Each …

Modeling And Optimization Of Biological Nutrients Removal In Wastewater Treatment Processes Considering Advanced Kinetic Modeling Techniques, Nawras Nabil Ai Ghazaly
Modeling And Optimization Of Biological Nutrients Removal In Wastewater Treatment Processes Considering Advanced Kinetic Modeling Techniques, Nawras Nabil Ai Ghazaly
Theses
In the field of wastewater treatment, there is an increasing demand to improve the effluent
quality especially if it is going to be discharged to surface water. Effluent discharged
to surface water should have minimum nutrients level (nitrogen and phosphorus) in order
to avoid eutrophication and the resulting algal blooms which deplete the water from the oxygen
needed by other plant and animal species. Moreover, there is a demand to reduce the chemical
consumption in the treatment processes and to depend as much as we can on the biological
Treatment methods in achieving the required effluent quality in terms of …

The Character Of God In The Speeches Of Yahweh In The Book Of Job, John David Telgren
The Character Of God In The Speeches Of Yahweh In The Book Of Job, John David Telgren
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Considering Job in its canonical form with special attention to the lawsuit and the mythopoeic features, this thesis investigates the portrayal of God in his speeches as a corrective to Job and his friends' erroneous view of God. Their erroneous view is based on the concept of violent and militant divine power that defeated a rival chaos deity before the foundation of the world and established order, justice, and community. Job and his friends believed that just rule, which is to preserve community order, is naturally based on the same violent power with which the world was created. Therefore, any …

Farm-Level Human Resource Management: An Opportunity For Extension, Kathryn Brasier, Jeffrey Hyde, Richard E. Stup, Lisa A. Holden
Journal of Extension
This article reports findings from research of dairy farm employment on large farms in Pennsylvania. Specifically, the article provides descriptions of duties and required and desired skills and training for nine distinct job titles. Based on these findings, training opportunities for managers and workers on dairy farms are suggested, focusing on communication, supervision and employee management, problem-solving, and computer skills. These are areas in which Extension educators have opportunities to improve the productivity of workers and to improve producers' human resource management skills, all of which may lead to increased farm productivity and sustainability.

Facilitating The Adoption Of An Online Conferencing System- A Recipe For Success, Theresa Pesl Murphrey, Susanna Coppernoll
Journal of Extension
The adoption of an Online Conferencing System by Texas Cooperative Extension has provided a way to meet challenges of geographic distance, time, and resource limitations in providing professional development. Implementation of specific steps throughout the diffusion of online conferencing has proved to greatly reduce the inherent technology intimidation that can exist with the adoption of new technologies. While the use of Online Conferencing Systems offer new and innovative ways to meet needs while reducing travel time and cost, implementing and gaining acceptance of this technology requires purposeful and planned efforts.

Gold Rush: Exploring An Alternative 4-H Livestock Experience, Andrew M. Lazur, Deborah B. Pouder, Monica L. Brinkley, Elaine Shook
Journal of Extension
Gold Rush, a new 4-H program involving rearing and showing goldfish, was conducted as an alternative to traditional, large animal livestock programs. A field day at the beginning of the project provided learning stations on the care and maintenance of goldfish and aquariums. Children reared goldfish for 6 months prior to showing their favorite fish at the district 4-H event. Learned skills were judged by the condition of the fish, written test result, project record book, and interview with the participant. Seventy percent of participants who showed fish wanted to continue or advance in the program.

Mission Thanksabunch: Saying Thank You Makes A Difference, Donna R. Gillespie
Journal of Extension
Recognizing contributors is crucial to maintaining community support for 4-H programs. It is important to recognize all 4-H patrons regardless of what projects they support. Mission Thanksabunch began in 2000 to thank market animal sale buyers and has been a great opportunity for 4-H youth to personally show their appreciation. The number of livestock buyers at the Minidoka County Fair has increased 31%, and sale receipts have increased by 104% since the program's beginning. Data indicated that even in times of depressed economic situations, local businesses and individuals are willing to support a successful and grateful youth development program.
Tips For Communicating Agricultural Safety To Children, Charles V. Schwab, Laura L. Miller, Lynn M. Graham
Tips For Communicating Agricultural Safety To Children, Charles V. Schwab, Laura L. Miller, Lynn M. Graham
Journal of Extension
Effectively communicating agricultural safety messages to children requires an understanding of this audience's unique characteristics, which are dependent upon their developmental stages. This article identifies important characteristics for the 4-7 and 8-12 age groups that were used in developing educational resources for children who participate in farm safety day camps and in-school programs. Each age group has specific characteristics that can inhibit communication when they are not considered in designing content and approach of educational materials. In addition, there are three comprehensive communication issues that affect the effectiveness of transferring safety messages to children.
Non-Fundamental Expectations And Economic Fluctuations: Evidence From Professional Forecasts, Keen Meng Choy, Kenneth Leong, Anthony S. Tay
Non-Fundamental Expectations And Economic Fluctuations: Evidence From Professional Forecasts, Keen Meng Choy, Kenneth Leong, Anthony S. Tay
Research Collection School Of Economics
It is theoretically possible that non-fundamental idiosyncratic shocks to agents’ rational expectations are a source of economic fluctuations. Studies using data on consumer and investor sentiment suggest that this is indeed an important source of fluctuations. We present the results of a study that uses forecasts from professional forecasters to extract non-fundamental shocks to expectations. In contrast to previous studies, we show that non-fundamental expectations are not a significant source of output fluctuations, although such shocks contributed to inflation.

Modeling A Reparable Supply Chain And Applying Cpfr Concepts, Sandra A. Mayhall
Modeling A Reparable Supply Chain And Applying Cpfr Concepts, Sandra A. Mayhall
Theses and Dissertations
The Air Force supply chain includes parts required to build, fix, or maintain aircraft delivered to the warfighter to carry out missions. Industry has shown that following Collaborative Planning, Forecasting, and Replenishment (CPFR) concepts, particularly reducing inventory through accurate demand forecasts, has increased profits in part by lowering the holding costs of inventory and increasing sales. This is analogous to the Air Force increasing aircraft availability. There is scant evidence that demand forecasts generated at any level in the Air Force are shared with the intent of coordinating replenishment. This thesis uses a simple discrete-event stochastic simulation model to show …
Development Of A Malicious Insider Composite Vulnerability Assessment Methodology, William H. King
Development Of A Malicious Insider Composite Vulnerability Assessment Methodology, William H. King
Theses and Dissertations
Trusted employees pose a major threat to information systems. Despite advances in prevention, detection, and response techniques, the number of malicious insider incidents and their associated costs have yet to decline. There are very few vulnerability and impact models capable of providing information owners with the ability to comprehensively assess the effectiveness an organization's malicious insider mitigation strategies. This research uses a multi-dimensional approach: content analysis, attack tree framework, and an intent driven taxonomy model are used to develop a malicious insider Decision Support System (DSS) tool. The DSS tool's utility and applicability is demonstrated using a notional example. This …
Molecular Characterization Of Wetland Soil Bacterial Community In Constructed Mesocosms, Ethan C. Bishop
Molecular Characterization Of Wetland Soil Bacterial Community In Constructed Mesocosms, Ethan C. Bishop
Theses and Dissertations
The use of wetlands to effectively remediate aquifers contaminated with chlorinated solvents is an emerging technique, which shows high promise. In order to better understand this process and test its legitimacy, a treatment wetland was constructed at Wright-Patterson AFB, Dayton, Ohio and, in a joint effort with Wright State University (WSU), has previously shown the effective removal of PCE. The purpose of this research was to characterize the soil bacterial community, pre-PCE injection, among three wetland plant species from the sedge family (Cyperaceae) within constructed wetland mesocosms and to identify any bacterial dominance. Carex comosa, Scirpus atrovirens, and Eleocharis erythropoda …

An Experimental Study Of A Pulsed Dc Plasma Flow Control Actuator, Jennifer D. Wall
Theses and Dissertations
An experiment on the effects of a pulsed DC plasma actuator on a separated flow in a low speed wind tunnel was conducted. The actuator consisted of two asymmetric copper electrodes oriented normal to the flow separated by a dielectric barrier and mounted on a flat plate in the center of the tunnel. A contoured insert was constructed and used to create an adverse pressure gradient in the test section comparable to a Pak-B low pressure turbine blade distribution. Suction was applied from the upper wall to induce separation along the flat plate over the electrodes. The DC power supply …
Coexistence Of The Niche And Neutral Perspectives In Community Ecology, Mathew A. Leibold, Mark A. Mcpeek
Coexistence Of The Niche And Neutral Perspectives In Community Ecology, Mathew A. Leibold, Mark A. Mcpeek
Dartmouth Scholarship
The neutral theory for community structure and biodiversity is dependent on the assumption that species are equivalent to each other in all important ecological respects. We explore what this concept of equivalence means in ecological communities, how such species may arise evolutionarily, and how the possibility of ecological equivalents relates to previous ideas about niche differentiation. We also show that the co-occurrence of ecologically similar or equivalent species is not incompatible with niche theory as has been supposed, because niche relations can sometimes favor coexistence of similar species. We argue that both evolutionary and ecological processes operate to promote the …
The Role Of Cd4 T Cells In The Pathogenesis Of Murine Aids, Wen Li, William R. Green
The Role Of Cd4 T Cells In The Pathogenesis Of Murine Aids, Wen Li, William R. Green
Dartmouth Scholarship
LP-BM5, a retroviral isolate, induces a disease featuring retrovirus-induced immunodeficiency, designated murine AIDS (MAIDS). Many of the features of the LP-BM5-induced syndrome are shared with human immunodeficiency virus-induced disease. For example, CD4 T cells are critical to the development of MAIDS. In vivo depletion of CD4 T cells before LP-BM5 infection rendered genetically susceptible B6 mice MAIDS resistant. Similarly, MAIDS did not develop in B6.nude mice. However, if reconstituted with CD4 T cells, B6.nude mice develop full-blown MAIDS. Our laboratory has shown that the interaction of B and CD4 T cells that is central to MAIDS pathogenesis requires ligation of …

Multilearner Based Recursive Supervised Training, Kiruthika Ramanathan, Sheng Uei Guan, Laxmi R. Iyer
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In supervised learning, most single solution neural networks such as constructive backpropagation give good results when used with some datasets but not with others. Others such as probabilistic neural networks (PNN) fit a curve to perfection but need to be manually tuned in the case of noisy data. Recursive percentage based hybrid pattern training (RPHP) overcomes this problem by recursively training subsets of the data, thereby using several neural networks. MultiLearner based recursive training (MLRT) is an extension of this approach, where a combination of existing and new learners are used and subsets are trained using the weak learner which …
