Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

The bathypelagic zone, Earth’s largest living space, is essentially boundless in three dimensions for most of its extent, structured only by fluid features (e.g., salinity, temperature) of the seawater itself. However, near certain topographic features this zone intersects the seafloor. The mid-ocean ridge system is by far the largest of these features. Unlike the ecosystems of the continental margins, the mid-ocean ridge systems do not receive terrigenous nutrient inputs. Thus, the deep-water fauna associated with mid-ocean ridges ultimately depend on the generally limited local surface production. Despite this limited surface production, there is evidence that near-ridge demersal fish biomass is …

Perception Precedes Computation: Can Familiarity Preferences Explain Apparent Calculation By Human Babies?, David S. Moore, Laura A. Cocas Jul 2006

Perception Precedes Computation: Can Familiarity Preferences Explain Apparent Calculation By Human Babies?, David S. Moore, Laura A. Cocas

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

Two studies of 5-month-old infants explored whether a phenomenon reported by K. Wynn (1992) reflects a familiarity preference instead of a mathematical competence. Experiment 1 was a conceptual replication of Wynn's study. When data were analyzed with the relatively liberal statistical approach used by Wynn, the original phenomenon was replicated. However, an analysis of variance revealed that girls and boys behaved in different ways, and that boys did not behave as Wynn would have predicted. Experiment 2 was identical to Experiment 1, with one exception that should not have influenced computation: Infants in this study were completely familiarized with the …

Optimization Of Grazing Management For Watershed Sediment Control, Y. Duan, P. Heilman, D. Phillip Guertin Jul 2006

Optimization Of Grazing Management For Watershed Sediment Control, Y. Duan, P. Heilman, D. Phillip Guertin

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Grazing on rangelands can increase erosion that is a major source of nonpoint source pollution. Grazing management is important in maintaining vegetation cover, which consequently impacts erosion and sediment yield. This paper uses a representative ranch model to define grazing management from an economic perspective. The model maximizes the profit of a representative ranch that can utilize all grazing lands in a watershed with constraints on forage resources, sustainable utilization, and production technology and sediment yield control objectives. A case study for the Walnut Gulch Watershed in Arizona showed a shift of the spatial distribution of optimal stocking rates with …

Τhe Integrated Model Network Ite2m: Model Set-Up And Assessment Of Agricultural Land Use And Management Options., Wolfgang Reiher, Lutz Breuer, Bernd Weinmann, Thorsten Pohlert, Martin Bach, Rolf A. Düring, Stefan Gäth, Hans Georg Frede

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The Integrated Tool for Economic and Ecological Modelling (ITE2M) is developed to assess landscape services of different land use options. ITE2M is a network of several models addressing agroeconomy, agricultural policy and environmental services with respect to soil, water as well as floral and faunal biodiversity. As a central part of ITE2M the agro-economic simulation model ProLand predicts land use distributions that are optimal from an economic point of view. ProLand calculates the spatially differentiated maximum land rent accounting for different natural, technical, economic and political boundary conditions. The site specific outputs of ProLand comprise land rent, land use and …

Free And Open Source Geospatial Tools For Environmental Modeling And Management, Ari Jolma, Daniel P. Ames, N. Horning, M. Neteler, Aaron Racicot, T. Sutton

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Geospatial software tools (GIS) are used for creating, viewing, managing, analyzing, and utilizing geospatial data. Geospatial data can include socio-economic, environmental, geophysical, and technical data about the Earth and societal infrastructure and it is pivotal in environmental modeling and management (EMM). Desktop, web-based, and embedded geospatial tools and systems have become an essential part of EMM. Environmental simulation models often require pre- or post-processing of geospatial data, or they can be tightly linked to a GIS, using it as a graphical user interface (GUI). Many local, regional, national, and international efforts are underway to create geospatial data infrastructures and tools …

Ten Steps Applied To Development And Evaluation Of Process-Based Biogeochemical Models Of Estuaries, Barbara J. Robson, Ian T. Webster, David P. Hamilton, Terence Chan, Teemu Kokkonen

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The procedures involved in model development may be set out ten-step process, beginning with defining the purpose of the model and ending with evaluation of the appropriateness and utility of the completed model. This process, recently outlined by Jakerman et al. [2006], is often iterative as model development is a continuous process that refines and improves the indented capacity of the model. Here, we show how the ten steps of model development are relevant to process-based biogeochemical modeling of aquatic systems, using examples from two case studies: a model of phytoplankton succession and nutrient concentrations in the Swan-Canning Estuary (Western …

Integrated Modeling: Examining The Fate And Transport Of Contaminants In Canadian Lakes And Rivers., William Booty, David Lam, Craig Mccrimmon

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

With the ever increasing introduction of chemicals to the environment (approx. 4000 new chemicals are registered each day), scientists and program managers are faced with an apparently endless and overwhelming task of examining the possible ecological risks of these new chemicals as well as the existing chemicals in aquatic ecosystems. It is also well recognized that no single model will be capable of dealing with all of the different types of chemicals and the environments that these chemicals are released into. It is therefore necessary to be able to integrate a spectrum of best practice models into a system that …

Current Trends In Environmental Modelling With Uncertainty., Jiří Hřebíček, Jan Pesl Jul 2006

Current Trends In Environmental Modelling With Uncertainty., Jiří Hřebíček, Jan Pesl

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The important characteristic feature of environmental modelling is the complexity and uncertainty of its mathematical representation (uncertainty of formula). Imprecision of its input data is another characteristic feature, where it is not possible to omit influences of primary monitoring (e.g. gaps of data, errors of measuring facilities, human factor, etc). Many parameters in algorithms and their mathematical formulations are substituted by empirical constants in praxis, although it is well known that their values are very volatile and input data are not validated. Nowadays, information and communication technology (ICT) capabilities are growing rapidly and applied mathematical software (e.g. computer algebra systems, …

Survival Of White Marlin (Tetrapturus Albidus) Released From Commercial Pelagic Longline Gear In The Western North Atlantic, David W. Kerstetter, John E. Graves Jul 2006

Survival Of White Marlin (Tetrapturus Albidus) Released From Commercial Pelagic Longline Gear In The Western North Atlantic, David W. Kerstetter, John E. Graves

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

To estimate postrelease survival of white marlin (Tetrapturus albidus) caught incidentally in regular commercial pelagic longline fishing operations targeting swordfish and tunas, short-duration popup satellite archival tags (PSATs) were deployed on captured animals for periods of 5-43 days. Twenty (71.4%) of 28 tags transmitted data at the preprogrammed time, including one tag that separated from the fish shortly after release and was omitted from subsequent analyses. Transmitted data from 17 of 19 tags were consistent with survival of those animals for the duration of the tag deployment. Postrelease survival estimates ranged from 63.0% (assuming all nontransmitting tags were …

Evaluation Of Serum Immunoglobulins Among Individuals Living Near Six Superfund Sites, Dhelia M. Williamson, Mary C. White, Charles Poole, David Kleinbaum, Robert Vogt, Kari North Jul 2006

Evaluation Of Serum Immunoglobulins Among Individuals Living Near Six Superfund Sites, Dhelia M. Williamson, Mary C. White, Charles Poole, David Kleinbaum, Robert Vogt, Kari North

United States Public Health Resources

Residents living in communities near Superfund sites have expressed concern that releases from these facilities affect their health, including adverse effects on their immune systems. We used data from six cross-sectional studies to evaluate whether people who live near several Superfund sites are more likely to have individual immunoglobulin test results (IgA, IgG, and IgM) below or above the reference range than those who live in comparison areas with no Superfund site. Study participants consisted of target-area residents who lived close to a Superfund site and comparison area residents who were not located near any Superfund or hazardous waste sites. …

How To Better Prepare For Assessment And Create A More Technologically Advanced Classroom, Kyle Lannin Poore Jul 2006

How To Better Prepare For Assessment And Create A More Technologically Advanced Classroom, Kyle Lannin Poore

Action Research Projects

In this action research study of my classroom of 8th grade mathematics, I investigated how to better prepare these students for quizzes and how technology can be used in the classroom. I discovered that there are many different ways to challenge students and help them prepare for assessments. There are also many ways to use technology in the classroom if one has the opportunities to use some of the tools, such as Power Point and Algebra Tiles. As a result of this research, I plan to increase the scores on state standards while also allowing the students to enjoy technology …

Direction Of The Production Much Ado About Nothing, Julie A. Somers-Gulsvig Jul 2006

Direction Of The Production Much Ado About Nothing, Julie A. Somers-Gulsvig

Master of Theater Production Graduate Projects

The pre-production research included an investigation of the political milieu and social norms of Elizabethan England during Shakespeare's lifetime; Shakespeare's biography; and the historical and cultural context of southern Italy during the late Renaissance. The study also included an examination of Much Ado About Nothing in terms of its relationship to Shakespeare's canon, as well as an investigation of its origin. The task of understanding Shakespearean text, and cutting the script to a length that would be more favorable to the expectations of a modem audience was also undertaken. Finally, an analysis of the dramatic action was conducted. Using a …
