My Best Canadian Place Name Transadditions, Darryl Francis

Word Ways

In "50 Best Canadian Place-Names" in the February 2004 Word Ways, we offered a list of Canadian place name transpositions. Here we present a list of 69 Canadian place names for which there are 200 transadditions. We chose to limit the list of 200 but we could have found further examples. We also could have increased the number of place names, but the lengths would have begun to fall below the nine-letter level.

Strategies For Reducing Mosquito-Borne Disease Vulnerability In Equine Populations: A Kentucky Case Study, Sara Dalton Aug 2006

Strategies For Reducing Mosquito-Borne Disease Vulnerability In Equine Populations: A Kentucky Case Study, Sara Dalton

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This research examined equine management practices that limit or contribute to the spread of West Nile virus and other mosquito-bome disease. I hypothesize that there is a relationship between equine management practices and outbreaks of mosquito-borne disease in horse populations. Improved and appropriate mosquito habitat management may limit the risk of mosquito-borne disease in humans and horses by helping to lower the mosquito populations. The study goals were to recognize equine management practices and mosquito prevention practices that foster outbreaks of mosquito-borne disease. This study used a questionnaire for county level analysis of equine management practices and the relationship to …

The Effects Of Item Grouping On Test Reliability, Holly Mackey Aug 2006

The Effects Of Item Grouping On Test Reliability, Holly Mackey

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Optimal ordering of items on a multidimensional test has been the focus of several studies. In all but one study, previous research centered on measures of personality or opinion. The current study examines item grouping effects for a cognitive ability test. Two forms of a cognitive ability test containing four constructs (verbal ability, basic computation, number series, and spatial visualization) were prepared. Form A consisted of items grouped by construct, and Form B had items dispersed randomly throughout the test. The order of items within a construct remained the same for both forms. Tests were administered to 186 undergraduate psychology …

The Green World Of Dystopian Fiction, Martin Hensley Aug 2006

The Green World Of Dystopian Fiction, Martin Hensley

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Northrop Frye was the first theorist to develop the green world archetype; Frye used the term to refer to a recurring motif in Shakespearean comedy. In several of Shakespeare's comedies, the protagonists leave the civilized world and venture into the green world, or nature, to escape from the irrational law of society, which is the case in such comedies as As You Like It and A Midsummer Night's Dream. Elements of the green world can also be found in Shakespearean tragedy, where the natural retreat serves as a temporary escape for the protagonists. Such a green world exists in three …

Human Aggression And Sports Media Violence, Justin Wright Aug 2006

Human Aggression And Sports Media Violence, Justin Wright

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The present study was designed to gain more perspective on human aggression and how sports media violence affects aggression levels. Anderson (1997) defined aggression as behavior that is intended to harm others or one's self. Anderson (2001) defined media violence as a portrayal of intentional harmful behavior directed at another person or the self. To define sports aggression, the definition of aggression must be manipulated slightly. The definition should be changed to a form of behavior intended to injure, whether or not an actual injury occurs, directed at an opposing team or opposing player to gain an advantage during the …

Strengthening Auditor Independence: Reestablishing Audits As Control And Premium Signaling Mechanisms, Sean M. O'Connor Aug 2006

Strengthening Auditor Independence: Reestablishing Audits As Control And Premium Signaling Mechanisms, Sean M. O'Connor

Washington Law Review

As recent scandals have demonstrated, ensuring the independence of auditors from the publicly traded clients whose books they inspect is one of the most vexing problems in the financial world today. Arguably, the imposition of a mandatory audit system through the 1930s federal securities laws created the modem problem of auditor independence. The core issue is that the statutory audit is simply a commodified cost of doing business for issuers that imposes an impossible obligation to serve an unspecified "investing public" on the auditors. Yet, this investing public neither hires, fires, nor controls the auditors. Instead, the audit relationship is …

Agricultural Pesticide Use And Risk Of T(14;18)-Defined Subtypes Of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, Brian C.-H. Chiu, Bhavana J. Dave, Aaron Blair, Susan M. Gapstur, Shelia Hoar Zahm, Dennis D. Weisenburger Aug 2006

Agricultural Pesticide Use And Risk Of T(14;18)-Defined Subtypes Of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, Brian C.-H. Chiu, Bhavana J. Dave, Aaron Blair, Susan M. Gapstur, Shelia Hoar Zahm, Dennis D. Weisenburger

United States Public Health Resources

Pesticides have been specifically associated with the t(14;18)(q32;q21) chromosomal translocation. To investigate whether the association between pesticides and risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) differs for molecular subtypes of NHL defined by t(14; 18) status, we obtained 175 tumor blocks from case subjects in a population-based case-control study conducted in Nebraska between 1983 and 1986. The t(14;18) was determined by interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization in 172 of 175 tumor blocks. We compared exposures to insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, and fumigants in 65 t(14;18)-positive and 107 t(14;18)-negative case subjects with those among 1432 control subjects. Multivariate polytomous logistic regression was used to …

Characterization And Feasibility Study Of A Near Infrared Ccd Imager For Monitoring Tumor Hemodynamics, Manan Goel Aug 2006

Characterization And Feasibility Study Of A Near Infrared Ccd Imager For Monitoring Tumor Hemodynamics, Manan Goel

Bioengineering Theses - Archive

Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancers diagnosed among North American men. Chemotherapy is generally used to target advanced metastatic prostate cancer. Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has been previously investigated to monitor the hemodynamic changes in rat prostate tumors; however, the previous study with NIRS is limited by its spatial resolution. The goal of this study is to characterize an NIR, CCD imager and to explore the feasibility of using the CCD imager to non-invasively monitor hemodynamic changes in rat prostate tumors during gas intervention. Firstly, studies were conducted to characterize the CCD imager and understand …

Impact Of A Pre-Combustion Retrofit Device On Vehicular Emissions: A Case Study, Sri Harsha Kanukolanu Aug 2006

Impact Of A Pre-Combustion Retrofit Device On Vehicular Emissions: A Case Study, Sri Harsha Kanukolanu

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

Vehicular emissions are a major cause of air pollution in the cities worldwide. Increased numbers of vehicles and the vehicle miles traveled by them every year means that the emissions are going to have a detrimental effect on the life and environment of this planet. Various control strategies are employed by the transportation and air quality managers at the state and regional levels to improve the ambient air quality. This research was conducted as part of the North Central Texas Council of Governments' Aftermarket Technology and Fuel Additive Research Program, its effort to make the DFW region's air cleaner. The …
