Diapause In Aquatic Invertebrates:What's Known And What's Next In Research And Medical Application?, Victor R. Alekseev, Jiang-Shiou Hwang, Mei-Hui Tseng

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Dormancy is a profound and ancient adaptation found in a wide spectrum of plants and animals of all habitats. In diapause the switch between active and dormant states is driven by hormonal mechanism that usually includes a photoperiodic pace-maker. Temperature, food limitation and some other stress factors as well are shown as driven by diapause induction in aquatic invertebrates. In the last decade, diapause studies from a wide variety of topics have demonstrated that diapause switch mechanisms may be developed to create novel applications in biotechnology. Resting eggs accumulated in the surface lake sediments represent a “bank” of zooplankton species …

The African Bushmeat Crisis: A Case For Global Partnership, Andrew Elliott Kohn, Heather E. Eves Sep 2006

The African Bushmeat Crisis: A Case For Global Partnership, Andrew Elliott Kohn, Heather E. Eves

ExpressO

Across Central Africa a commercial, unsustainable, and largely illegal hunting and trade in wildlife for meat has expanded in recent years causing immediate threat to countless wildlife populations and species. Currently, multi-national agreements and government initiatives created to address the bushmeat crisis in the region are unable to halt the extensive destruction to the area’s unique biodiversity . Although many of these agreements strongly support addressing the bushmeat crisis, they lack the resources and capacity to be fully implemented. Strong U.S. engagement in a global partnership, arising from intensive, complete, and wide-ranging bipartisan commitment would greatly enhance existing international biodiversity …

Understanding Long-Term Energy Use And Carbon Dioxide Emissions In The Usa, Richard S.J. Tol, Stephen W. Pacala , Robert Socolow Sep 2006

Understanding Long-Term Energy Use And Carbon Dioxide Emissions In The Usa, Richard S.J. Tol, Stephen W. Pacala , Robert Socolow

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We compile a database of energy uses, energy sources, and carbon dioxide emissions for the USA for the period 1850-2002. We use a model to extrapolate the missing observations on energy use by sector. Overall emission intensity rose between 1850 and 1917, and fell between 1917 and 2002. The leading cause for the rise in emission intensity was the switch from wood to coal, but population growth, economic growth, and electrification contributed as well. After 1917, population growth, economic growth and electrification pushed emissions up further, and there was no net shift from fossil to non-fossil energy sources. From 1850 …

Foreigners And The City: An Historiographical Exploration For The Early Modern Period, Donatella Calabi Sep 2006

Foreigners And The City: An Historiographical Exploration For The Early Modern Period, Donatella Calabi

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper will focus on the physical traces left by different minorities in the European city of the early modern age. Looking to the urban context in the main important ports and commercial centers we can find violent conflicts, traditional uses, as well as new urban strategies by the governors to keep together (for economic and social purposes) city-dwellers and foreigners. The invention of specific buildings and the effect on the architectural language is often quite visible and a mean of cultural exchanges.

This report is one of many attempts to quantify and track Cal Poly’s movement toward a “greener” campus. Efforts are underway to reduce reliance on automobile commuting to campus, to promote energy and water conservation, to recycle solid waste, and to incorporate “green” products and practices in new buildings and in campus operations. This report looks at measures of sustainability along several parameters. The results not only highlight various successes, but also suggest areas in which additional efforts are needed. We intend to update this report biennially.

Identity And Self-Other Differentiation In Work And Giving Behaviors: Experimental Evidence, Avner Ben-Ner, Brian P. Mccall, Massoud Stephane, Hua Wang Sep 2006

Identity And Self-Other Differentiation In Work And Giving Behaviors: Experimental Evidence, Avner Ben-Ner, Brian P. Mccall, Massoud Stephane, Hua Wang

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We show that the distinction between Self and Other, ‘us’ and ‘them,’ or in-group and out-group, affects significantly economic and social behavior. In a series of experiments with approximately 200 Midwestern students as our subjects, we found that they favor those who are similar to them on any of a wide range of categories of identity over those who are not like them. Whereas family and kinship are the most powerful source of identity in our sample, all 13 potential sources of identity in our experiments affect behavior. We explored individuals’ willingness to give money to imaginary people, using a …

Paradoxical Facilitation Of Object Recognition Memory After Infusion Of Scopolamine Into Perirhinal Cortex: Implications For Cholinergic System Function., Boyer D Winters, Lisa M Saksida, Timothy J Bussey

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

The cholinergic system has long been implicated in learning and memory, yet its specific function remains unclear. In the present study, we investigated the role of cortical acetylcholine in a rodent model of declarative memory by infusing the cholinergic muscarinic receptor antagonist scopolamine into the rat perirhinal cortex during different stages (encoding, storage/consolidation, and retrieval) of the spontaneous object recognition task. Presample infusions of scopolamine significantly impaired object recognition compared with performance of the same group of rats on saline trials; this result is consistent with previous reports supporting a role for perirhinal acetylcholine in object information acquisition. Scopolamine infusions …

Microarray Profiling Of Skeletal Muscle Sarcoplasmic Reticulum Proteins, Jospeh S. Schulz, Nathan Palmer, Jon Steckelberg, Steven J. Jones, Michael G. Zeece

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Microarrays were developed to profile the level of proteins associated with calcium regulation in sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) isolated from porcine Longissimus muscle. The microarrays consisted of SR preparations printed onto to glass slides and probed with monoclonal antibodies to 7 target proteins. Proteins investigated included: ryanodine receptor, (RyR), dihydropyridine receptor, (DHPR), triadin (TRI), calsequestrin (CSQ), 90 kDa junctional protein (JSR90), and fast-twitch and slow-twitch SR calcium ATPases (SERCA1 and SERCA2). Signal from a fluorescentlylabeled detection antibody was measured and quantitated using a slide reader. The microarray developed was also employed to profile Longissimus muscle SR proteins from halothane genotyped animals. …

Bioenergy, Safety Net Tools Are Producers’ Top Priorities For Next Farm Bill, Bradley Lubben, Mary Thompson Sep 2006

Bioenergy, Safety Net Tools Are Producers’ Top Priorities For Next Farm Bill, Bradley Lubben, Mary Thompson

Department of Agricultural Economics: Presentations, Working Papers, and Gray Literature

Bioenergy and the structure of safety net programs are of high interest to farmers and ranchers as the next farm bill is debated, according to more than 15,000 farmers and ranchers in 27 states surveyed by Farm Foundation’s National Public Policy Education Committee (NPPEC). The survey was released today as part of Farm Foundation's 2007 Farm Bill Forum.

Producers ranked renewable energy, enhancing opportunities for small and beginning farmers, and assuring a safe and affordable food supply as their top three goals for the next farm bill. “All the goals presented to producers to rank were decades-old rationales for farm …
