A Spectroscopic Study On The Level Of Serum Selenium In Northern Baghdad Subject, Ahsan.K.Abbas

Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: This work is performed to measure the concentration of serum selenium in northern Baghdad subject. Selenium is one of the trace element that plays an important role in physiological functions of human body. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Selenium levels of blood serum were measured using furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometer. RESULTS : The results obtained in this work showed a decrease in selenium level and the reduction is proportional to the duration of age. This can be explained principally due to the type of diet and malabsorption young subject may differ in certain diet intake.

Immunological Study Of Febrile Fever: Serum Sialic Acid, Immunoglobulin Levels (Iga, Igg And Igm), Complement Factors (C3 And C4) In Patients With Typhoid Fever And Brucellosis, Ghassan Mohammad Sulaiman Sep 2006

Immunological Study Of Febrile Fever: Serum Sialic Acid, Immunoglobulin Levels (Iga, Igg And Igm), Complement Factors (C3 And C4) In Patients With Typhoid Fever And Brucellosis, Ghassan Mohammad Sulaiman

Iraqi Postgraduate Medical Journal

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Typhoid fever and brucellosis are frequent causes of bloodstream infections in many countries. The diagnosis of these infections is challenging because they can have diverse clinical manifestations with symptoms that overlap with a wide spectrum of other diseases. However, neither Widal nor Rose-Bengal agglutination assays are sufficiently sensitive, specific, or practical in areas of endemicity .In this study, it was undertaken to determine the sensitivity and specificity of clinical application of sialic acid in the evaluation of humoral immune response in patients with typhoid fever and brucellosis. Furthermore, the role of sialic acid (SA) was investigated as a …

Potential Field Based Approach For Multi-Threat Containment With Cooperative Robots, Bhushan Mehendale Sep 2006

Potential Field Based Approach For Multi-Threat Containment With Cooperative Robots, Bhushan Mehendale

Theses

Target or threat containment is a process where a team of robots forms a particular formation around a target so that it gets engulfed in it. The robots under consideration run decentralized Swarm-Algorithms that make them cooperate with each other using their local sensing capabilities. Previous work in this area has dealt with robot formations and single threat containment where the target is either fixed or dynamic. In either case the same targets exist throughout the containment process. The challenge is to use such collaborative robots to contain multiple targets that appear at random times, and expire after some time. …

Leveling The Playing Field: Is It Time For A Legal Assistance Center For Developing Nations In Investment Treaty Arbitration? , Eric J. Gottwald Sep 2006

Leveling The Playing Field: Is It Time For A Legal Assistance Center For Developing Nations In Investment Treaty Arbitration? , Eric J. Gottwald

ExpressO

As part of an effort to encourage foreign direct investment, developing nations have signed over 1500 bilateral investment treaties (BITs) in just the last fifteen years. BITs grant foreign investors substantive rights, such as freedom from expropriation and the right to sue governments directly for a breach of the treaty in a process known as investment treaty arbitration. Over the last five years, the number of investment treaty arbitration claims filed against developing nations has more than tripled. The stakes are high: investor claims routinely seek damages in excess of $100,000,000 and challenge host state regulation of basic public services …

The Wto Appellate Body Gambles On The Future Of The Gats: Analyzing The Internet Gambling Dispute Between Antigua And The United States Before The World Trade Organization, Kelly Ann M. Tran Sep 2006

The Wto Appellate Body Gambles On The Future Of The Gats: Analyzing The Internet Gambling Dispute Between Antigua And The United States Before The World Trade Organization, Kelly Ann M. Tran

ExpressO

The World Trade Organization’s recent Appellate Body decision in the Antigua – United States dispute found that U.S. restrictions on Internet gambling qualified for an exception under Article XIV of the GATS. This paper criticizes the Appellate Body’s decision to overturn the WTO Panel on two grounds. First, it argues that the Appellate Body erred when it concluded that U.S. gambling restrictions are necessary to protect public morals or maintain public order. Second, it argues that the Appellate Body failed to adhere to previous WTO measures dealing with similar jurisprudence and both panels did not adequately explain the significance of …

Whose Ownership? Which Society?, Robert C. Hockett Sep 2006

Whose Ownership? Which Society?, Robert C. Hockett

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

The idea of an "ownership society" (OS) is not new to American politics or law. It might be called the seventeen year cicada of American domestic policy - emerging once per generation onto the national agenda, generating just a bit of buzz, then receding once again to leave a mass of empty shells and buried eggs behind. Unlike the insects, however, OS proposals seldom have sounded the same notes to everyone's ears. They have been proffered to or on behalf of differing constituencies for differing reasons, and therefore have tended to mean different things to different people. It is tempting …

Funding For Performance And Equity: Student Success In English Further Education Colleges, Ozan Jaquette Sep 2006

Funding For Performance And Equity: Student Success In English Further Education Colleges, Ozan Jaquette

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

The impact of performance funding on community college student outcomes is a contested issue. Performance funding policies in most U.S. states involve too small a proportion of funding to change college behavior. English further education colleges are similar to U.S. community colleges. 1992 policy reforms in England centralized policy control, and implemented a per-pupil funding formula; 10% of all funding is based on student success but other components of the funding formula pay colleges more money for enrolling disadvantaged students. This research uses five years of student level data to test the impact of these policies. Overall student success rates …

Locus Ceruleus Regulates Sensory Encoding By Neurons And Networks In Waking Animals, David M. Devilbiss, Michelle E. Page, Barry D. Waterhouse Sep 2006

Locus Ceruleus Regulates Sensory Encoding By Neurons And Networks In Waking Animals, David M. Devilbiss, Michelle E. Page, Barry D. Waterhouse

Department of Neurosurgery Faculty Papers

Substantial evidence indicates that the locus ceruleus (LC)–norepinephrine (NE) projection system regulates behavioral state and state-dependent processing of sensory information. Tonic LC discharge (0.1–5.0 Hz) is correlated with levels of arousal and demonstrates an optimal firing rate during good performance in a sustained attention task. In addition, studies have shown that locally applied NE or LC stimulation can modulate the responsiveness of neurons, including those in the thalamus, to nonmonoaminergic synaptic inputs. Many recent investigations further indicate that within sensory relay circuits of the thalamus both general and specific features of sensory information are represented within the collective firing patterns …
