Classroom Conversations About Race, Poverty And Social Status In The Aftermath Of Katrina, Homer C. La Rue, Lela P. Love
Classroom Conversations About Race, Poverty And Social Status In The Aftermath Of Katrina, Homer C. La Rue, Lela P. Love
Articles
This article addresses dialogue regarding issues of race, poverty and social inequalities in the wake of the New Orleans hurricane Katrina. Conversations were conducted in law school classrooms at Howard Law School and Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law regarding the intersection of law and race, class, and poverty. The objective was not to have an abstract dialogue, but to help students develop a personal understanding of each student’s connection or lack of connection to the issues of race, class and poverty and their own choices about becoming a lawyer as it might relate to those issues. The goal was …

Using Updates To Educate Policy Makers About Water Programs At Land-Grant Institutions, Robert L. Mahler, Robert Simmons, Fred Sorensen, Michael Cochrane
Journal of Extension
We developed a regional two-page color newsletter called PNWWATER UPDATE that focuses on specific water resource issues in the Pacific Northwest to meet the needs of our stakeholders. This newsletter is distributed to our congressional delegation and all state legislators serving on education, environment, or agriculture committees. Fifty-seven policy makers on our mailing list for the last 2 years evaluated the value of this newsletter. In general, policy makers found the newsletter to be of high quality, timely, and informative, and thought that it addressed the water quality priorities in the region.
Fault Modeling In Wireless Sensor Networks, Ahmed A. Elmiligui
Fault Modeling In Wireless Sensor Networks, Ahmed A. Elmiligui
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
A large amount of research has been done in the area of wireless sensor networks (WSN), but not much work has been done in modeling the fault tolerance and reliability of these networks. In this thesis, the fault tolerance of a WSN to node failures is studied and an analytical reliability model of the network is derived. A valid reliability model of a network could reveal an estimate of the network's performance before it is deployed.
A wireless sensor network was modeled as a k-out-of-n system and a generic fault tolerant framework for the network in terms of node losses …
The Effects Of Ultrashort Pulsed Electric Fields On The Fluorescent Molecule Bodipy Fl C5 Ceramide, Rachael Sara Shevin
The Effects Of Ultrashort Pulsed Electric Fields On The Fluorescent Molecule Bodipy Fl C5 Ceramide, Rachael Sara Shevin
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Nanosecond pulsed electric fields are able to manipulate internal cell organelles by taking advantage of the small but finite time required for charge to establish across a capacitive barrier. Pulsed electric fields also affect macromolecular structures such as enzymes and proteins. Application of a single nanosecond pulsed electric field decreases the fluorescence of a commercially available biological dye Bodipy FL C5 Ceramide, used to observe the Golgi apparatus of living cells. The effect is seen when the fluorophore is exposed to an electric field both in vitro and when incorporated into the Golgi of a living Jurkat cell. Observation …
The Effectiveness Of A Four-Hour Challenge Course On Leadership Efficacy And Work Efficacy, Theresa J. Odella
The Effectiveness Of A Four-Hour Challenge Course On Leadership Efficacy And Work Efficacy, Theresa J. Odella
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations
Challenge courses have become increasingly popular in recent years. Benefits examined and researched through the use of challenge courses include increased self-esteem, group cohesion, leadership skills, and general self-efficacy (Hart & Silka, 1994; Hatch & McCarthy, 2005; Moseley, Reinke, & Bookout, 2002; Paxton, 2000; Propst & Koesler, 1998). Many groups are turning to half-day challenge courses due to time and financial constraints. Few studies have quantified the benefits of a half-day course. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of participation in a four-hour challenge course on leadership efficacy and work efficacy of college students. A survey …

Pantry Pests, Erin W. Hodgson, Alan H. Roe
Pantry Pests, Erin W. Hodgson, Alan H. Roe
All Current Publications
Pantry pests are insects that infest whole or processed food in the home. Infestations can start out with just a few insects, but a population can quickly surge if given a proper food source and a place to reproduce. Immature and adult insects are typically brought into a home in grain-based products.

Bio-Inspired Algorithms For The Design Of Multiple Optimal Power System Stabilizers: Sppso And Bfa, Tridib Kumar Das, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy
Bio-Inspired Algorithms For The Design Of Multiple Optimal Power System Stabilizers: Sppso And Bfa, Tridib Kumar Das, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Power System Stabilizers (PSSs) provide stabilizing control signals to excitation systems to damp out inter-area and intra-area oscillations. The PSS must be optimally tuned to accommodate the variations in the system dynamics. Designing multiple optimal PSSs is a challenging task for researchers. This paper presents the comparison between two bio-inspired algorithms: a Small Population based Particle Swarm Optimization (SPPSO) and the Bacterial Foraging Algorithm (BFA) for the simultaneous tuning of a number of PSSs in a multi-machine power system. The cost function to be optimized by both algorithms takes into consideration the time domain transient responses. The effectiveness of the …

Viz: A Visual Analysis Suite For Explaining Local Search Behavior, Steven Halim, Roland H. C. Yap, Hoong Chuin Lau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems are common in real life. Due to their intractability, local search algorithms are often used to solve such problems. Since these algorithms are heuristic-based, it is hard to understand how to improve or tune them. We propose an interactive visualization tool, VIZ, meant for understanding the behavior of local search. VIZ uses animation of abstract search trajectories with other visualizations which are also animated in a VCR-like fashion to graphically playback the algorithm behavior. It combines generic visualizations applicable on arbitrary algorithms with algorithm and problem specific visualizations. We use a variety of techniques such as …

Grey Suit Or Brown Carhartt: Narrative Transition, Relocation, And Reorientation In The Lives Of Corporate Refugees, Brian Hoey
Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Research
This article examines relocation stories of people who leave behind corporate work culture, relocate from metropolitan areas to small towns and rural places, and attempt to reorient themselves to work and family obligations. Decisions to start over take place within the context of moral questions about what makes a life worth living and what does not through a process in which geography has a bearing. For these migrants, a choice about where to live is also one about how to live. Choices of how to live one's life are made of more than simple economics, they are also moral. The …
Lower Incisors Of Prairie Dogs (Cynomys) As Biorecorders Of Hibernation And Season Of Death, H. Thomas Goodwin, Eva M. Ryckman
Lower Incisors Of Prairie Dogs (Cynomys) As Biorecorders Of Hibernation And Season Of Death, H. Thomas Goodwin, Eva M. Ryckman
Faculty Publications
Incremental dentin and associated enamel, features visible at the surface of lower incisors of rodents, may chronicle important life-history information. This study investigated surface features of lower incisors representing 4 taxa of prairie dogs (Cynomys) in relation to hibernation and season of year. A set of abnormalities in dentin and enamel, observed on 20 of 138 incisors, always chronicled an event ending in late winter or early spring and was interpreted as a hibernation mark. Hibernation was recorded in the incisors of obligate hibernators, C. leucurus and C. gunnisoni, as well as in 20% of specimens of the facultative heterotherm, …

Endocarditis And Biofilm-Associated Pili Of Enterococcus Faecalis, Sreedhar R Nallapareddy, Kavindra V Singh, Jouko Sillanpää, Danielle A Garsin, Magnus Höök, Stanley L Erlandsen, Barbara E Murray
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Increasing multidrug resistance in Enterococcus faecalis, a nosocomial opportunist and common cause of bacterial endocarditis, emphasizes the need for alternative therapeutic approaches such as immunotherapy or immunoprophylaxis. In an earlier study, we demonstrated the presence of antibodies in E. faecalis endocarditis patient sera to recombinant forms of 9 E. faecalis cell wall-anchored proteins; of these, we have now characterized an in vivo-expressed locus of 3 genes and an associated sortase gene (encoding sortase C; SrtC). Here, using mutation analyses and complementation, we demonstrated that both the ebp (encoding endocarditis and biofilm-associated pili) operon and srtC are important for biofilm production …
Conflict As A Form Of Capital In Controversial Community Development Projects, Jeff Zacharakis
Conflict As A Form Of Capital In Controversial Community Development Projects, Jeff Zacharakis
Journal of Extension
Without conflict there would be little passion and interest in most community initiatives. Conflict within controversial community development projects is capital that can be reinvested and serve as a positive source of energy that benefits the project. To illustrate this point, this article looks at a composite of three actual sub-watershed projects in Iowa's Maquoketa River Basin and analyzes how the different levels of conflict affected these projects.

An Evaluation Of Retinal Imaging Technology For 4-H Beef And Sheep Identification, Clinton P. Rusk, Christine R. Blomeke, Mark A. Balschweid, Stephen J. Elliott
Journal of Extension
The study reported here evaluated retinal imaging technology as a means of permanent identification of 4-H beef and sheep. The OptiReader» Device was used to capture digital images of 491 beef and 220 sheep during 4-H enrollment. A total of 317 beef and 159 sheep were re-imaged. The on-site visual verification rate was 96.2% for beef and 100% for sheep. A visual verification exercise showed that individuals could identify a pair of retinal images as a match 98.6 % of the time for beef. Retinal imaging is a viable method for enrolling beef and sheep.
Effective Use Of Community Partnerships To Maximize Impact, Elizabeth A. Greene
Effective Use Of Community Partnerships To Maximize Impact, Elizabeth A. Greene
Journal of Extension
Through collaboration with community partners, UVM Extension has been able to reach and have an impact on a large audience at Everything Equine, a statewide educational equine event and consumer tradeshow. By partnering with Champlain Valley Exposition and others, UVM Extension is a major player in an event that would be time/cost prohibitive and virtually impossible to produce alone. All partners bring different strengths and resources to the event, resulting in a well-rounded 2-day educational and shopping experience for Vermont horse industry members. This event has also brought positive attention at the state level to this growing agricultural industry.

Enhancing Mosquito-Borne Disease Surveillance In Florida, C Roxanne Rutledge-Connelly, Jonathan F. Day, Gregory K. Ross
Journal of Extension
The University of Florida, IFAS, Florida Medical Entomology Laboratory developed online graphic visuals to assist Florida mosquito control districts and health departments in maximizing the potential of their individual surveillance programs for mosquito-borne diseases through a better understanding and interpretation of surveillance data. Using data generated by the Florida Department of Health, we developed Geographic Information System (GIS) based maps with animation (video) to bring surveillance results "to life." Our GIS video is the first of its kind in mosquito-borne disease surveillance and will aid in refining the science of preventing mosquito-borne diseases outbreaks.

Dying, Death, And Afterlife From A Buddhist Perspective, Karma Lekshe Tsomo Phd
Theology and Religious Studies: Faculty Scholarship
Since earliest times, death has fascinated, terrified, and confounded human beings. Virtually every religious tradition offers some explanation of three key concerns: the beginnings of the world, the meaning and purpose of human existence, and the end of life. The Buddhist traditions have given special attention to the meaning of life and the end of life as central topics for reflection.
