Fecundity And Almodóvar? Sexual Ethics And The Specter Of Catholicism, Christopher Mcmahon Oct 2006

Fecundity And Almodóvar? Sexual Ethics And The Specter Of Catholicism, Christopher Mcmahon

Journal of Religion & Film

The famed Spanish film maker Pedro Almodóvar has spent much of his film career narrating stories which subvert the Francoist-Catholic ideology of mid-twentieth century Spain, particularly its account of sex and family. But in several of his recent films prior to Bad Education both homosexual and heterosexual characters struggle with questions of sexuality and birth. As these themes are subtly and dramatically presented they exert what one may identify as the 'spectral force' of Catholicism. As such, this essay suggests that these films may offer resources for Catholics to engage the critical questions concerning homosexuality in the life of the …

From Superman To Brahman: The Religious Shift Of The Matrix Mythology, Jeffery Wittung, Daniel Bramer Oct 2006

From Superman To Brahman: The Religious Shift Of The Matrix Mythology, Jeffery Wittung, Daniel Bramer

Journal of Religion & Film

In this article, we argue two points: 1) that the religious images, symbols and allusions of The Matrix mythology shift decidedly from the West to the East; and 2) that the Western end of this shift is grounded not in the Christian religious tradition, but in Nietzschean humanism. This humanism explicit in the opening lines of the history of the Matrix myth, as found in The Animatrix, retains its dominance through The Matrix and into Reloaded, at which point the myth turns increasingly eastward and ends in the cyclical images of Vedic and Puranic creation and dissolution.

Fisheries Research Contract Report No. 15 - Aquatic Animal Health Subprogram: Pilchard Herpesvirus Infection In Wild Pilchards (Frdc Project No. 2002/044) Final Report, Brian Jones, Melanie Crockford, Richard Whittington, Mark Crane, Graham Wilcox Oct 2006

Fisheries Research Contract Report No. 15 - Aquatic Animal Health Subprogram: Pilchard Herpesvirus Infection In Wild Pilchards (Frdc Project No. 2002/044) Final Report, Brian Jones, Melanie Crockford, Richard Whittington, Mark Crane, Graham Wilcox

Fisheries Research Contract Reports

In 1995 and again in 1998/9, millions of pilchards (Sardinops sagax neopilchardus) were found dead or dying off the coast of Australia. Some pilchards in New Zealand were also affected during the 1995 epizootic. The epizootics moved progressively in a "bushfire-like" manner against the prevailing currents at a rapid speed. An uncharacterised herpesvirus, pilchard herpesvirus (PHV), was associated with both mortality events and, based on its occurrence in affected fish and the disease pathogenesis, generally accepted as the causative agent, although experimental evidence of its role was not established. Until recently, rapid and sensitive methods to detect PHV were not …

Alliances And American National Security, Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall Dr. Oct 2006

Alliances And American National Security, Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

One of the greatest challenges facing the United States today is the translation of its overwhelming might into effective influence. Traditionally, the United States has leveraged its power through bilateral and multilateral alliances. However, the end of the Cold War and the events of September 11, 2001, have led some policymakers and analysts to question the value of alliances in American foreign and defense policy. This monograph advocates that allies are more important than ever to the achievement of U.S. national security goals.

Investigating The Feasibility Of A Passive Tracking Index For Monitoring Wildlife In The Lower Omo Valley, Ethiopia, Richard M. Engeman, Paul Evangilista Oct 2006

Investigating The Feasibility Of A Passive Tracking Index For Monitoring Wildlife In The Lower Omo Valley, Ethiopia, Richard M. Engeman, Paul Evangilista

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

In many places in Africa, constraints in human, financial and physical resources are common problems that limit the effectiveness of wildlife researchers and managers. In an attempt to identify a useful tool for monitoring African wildlife populations, we tested a passive tracking index (PTI) methodology on a unique wildlife resource area in the Lower Omo Valley, Ethiopia. The methodology had previously proved valuable for monitoring a wide variety of wildlife species, including ungulates and carnivores in North America and Australia. Two ungulates (lesser kudu and dikdik), a carnivore (hyena), a primate (baboon), and a ground foraging bird (guineafowl) were simultaneously …

Awareness And Intended Compliance Of Beef Cattle Exhibitors In The National Animal Identification System, Keisha Patent, Brian Roe, Francis Fluharty Oct 2006

Awareness And Intended Compliance Of Beef Cattle Exhibitors In The National Animal Identification System, Keisha Patent, Brian Roe, Francis Fluharty

Journal of Extension

The National Animal Identification System (NAIS) will soon require compliance from all cattle producers. Using data gathered in Ohio and Kentucky, we analyzed awareness of and intended compliance with the NAIS by a producer segment posing significant disease risk--beef cattle exhibitors. Participants with larger show strings and extensive show-related travel are more aware of the NAIS. Heightened respondent awareness and use of computerized records are positively correlated with intended compliance. Respondents who attend multiple shows and expect additional record keeping under the NAIS report lower intended compliance. The potential role of youth organizations in promoting NAIS compliance is discussed.

Animal Feeding Operations And Water Quality--Resources And Livestock In Balance, Tipton D. Hudson, Joe H. Harrison

Journal of Extension

This article describes an education program that was developed to provide conservation district staff an understanding of state and federal water quality rules and guidance on when to recommend specific best management practices to livestock producers to protect water quality. Real farm case studies were used to teach site-specific conditions that would place a livestock owner at risk of having a significant negative impact on surface or ground water quality. Specific outcomes were case studies in PowerPoint presentations, best management fact sheets, and a livestock-influenced water quality risk assessment tool.

Livestock-Influenced Water Quality Risk Assessment Tool, Tipton D. Hudson, Joe H. Harrison, Rick Koelsch

Journal of Extension

This article describes a livestock-influenced water quality risk assessment tool that was developed to assist livestock producers with conducting a self-assessment of their operation and management relative to a facility's risk of negatively affecting water quality. The tool focuses on factors likely to influence designation of the operation as a Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation by a permitting authority and was also designed to be used in cooperation with a technical service provider to make a site-specific assessment. The tool is available in paper format and an interactive Microsoft ExcelTM spreadsheet version.
