Traver Urban Design Plan, Fall 2006, Crp 341 Urban Design Studio

City and Regional Planning Studios and Projects

The following report presents the result of eleven weeks of a collaborative effort taken by a Cal Poly undergraduate planning class (CRP 341 – Community Design Studio; Fall 2006) to create a vision for future development in the community of Traver. This work continues a process started during the Summer of 2006, when a special group of our department’s faculty and students held a series of community workshops designed to develop a participatory concept plan for Traver.

A Good Lesson For Texas: Learning How To Adequately Assist Languageminorities Learn English, Sandra Cortes Oct 2006

A Good Lesson For Texas: Learning How To Adequately Assist Languageminorities Learn English, Sandra Cortes

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

This Comment argues that Texas should restructure current programs or adopt an entirely different linguistic program to better address the needs of limited English proficiency students. Bilingual education programs that have been proven to be ineffective in Texas and other states should not be allowed to continue to fail languageminority students. However, the best solution might not be to adopt an English-immersion program; rather, Texas should begin to structure a program that truly focuses, addresses, and remedies the needs of language-minority students.

Environmental Rearing Conditions Produce Forebrain Differences In Wild Chinook Salmon Oncorhynchus Tshawytscha, R. L. Kihslinger, Sean C. Lema, G. A. Nevitt Oct 2006

Environmental Rearing Conditions Produce Forebrain Differences In Wild Chinook Salmon Oncorhynchus Tshawytscha, R. L. Kihslinger, Sean C. Lema, G. A. Nevitt

Biological Sciences

Recent studies suggest that hatchery-reared fish can have smaller brain-to-body size ratios than wild fish. It is unclear, however, whether these differences are due to artificial selection or instead reflect differences in rearing environment during development. Here we explore how rearing conditions influence the development of two forebrain structures, the olfactory bulb and the telencephalon, in juvenile Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) spawned from wild-caught adults. First, we compared the sizes of the olfactory bulb and telencephalon between salmon reared in a wild stream vs. a conventional hatchery. We next compared the sizes of forebrain structures between fish reared …

A Navajo Legacy: The Life And Teachings Of John Holiday, H. Bert Jenson Oct 2006

A Navajo Legacy: The Life And Teachings Of John Holiday, H. Bert Jenson

English Faculty Publications

WITHOUT A DOUBT, Robert McPherson is one of the most prolific and conscientious writers on the Navajo people in this generation, and an advocate of their life ways, history, and place in American society. He is consummately careful not to breech the right of literary sovereignty native peoples everywhere are exerting over their own culture and heritage. In this latest work one perceives certain humility about his approach to such things, and one enters into the dialogue on that same premise. As co-author/editor, he is gracious in his acknowledgement of those who helped him bring the work to print: Baxter …

Cows And Colobus (Procolobus Kirkii): Resource-Sharing Habits At Jozani National Park, Emily Walz Oct 2006

Cows And Colobus (Procolobus Kirkii): Resource-Sharing Habits At Jozani National Park, Emily Walz

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Due to population compression, the Zanzibar red colobus monkeys of Jozani have been forced to explore new food options on the ground. I studied the food preferences of this endangered species in the agricultural land adjacent to Jozani National Park and compared it with the species consumed by local cattle that graze in the same space. This information, along with a preliminary behavioral assessment of the red colobus monkeys when near cattle, provides a first look at the food species eaten by both cows and colobus, in addition to documenting some of the direct and indirect interactions that occur between …

Something Fishy: Cultivating Children’S Sense Of Place Through Literature, Anne Rone Oct 2006

Something Fishy: Cultivating Children’S Sense Of Place Through Literature, Anne Rone

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Environmental Education (EE) has become increasingly important in Australian public and governmental discourse in the past decade. In its most recent national environmental education statement (2005: 7) the Department of Environment and Heritage lays out a new model of sustainability education that is “about,” “in,” and “for” the environment. This governmental framework includes variety of programs for school children in and out of the classroom. Within the realm of EE, sense of place has re-emerged as an important issue. The study of place fosters a sense of wonder and appreciation for the environment in children and leads to concrete, transformative …

Antipodean Inscapes: Reflection Of The Land As A Young Man, Michael Kantor Oct 2006

Antipodean Inscapes: Reflection Of The Land As A Young Man, Michael Kantor

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The following paper contains a stand-alone piece of creative travel writing. ‘Cloud Juice’ is based on my interpretation of the experiences of the Fall 2006 Australia: Sustainability and the Environment semester. As it is my own personal interpretation it should not be placed in the category of non-fiction. Instead I have tried to write a story that presents the tone of my experience as honestly as possible, rather than simply telling the unbiased facts of the semester. My reason for writing this is to experiment with alternative methods of communicating the growth of an ecological ethic. By focusing on the …

Splitting Concepts, Gualtiero Piccinini, Sam Scott Oct 2006

Splitting Concepts, Gualtiero Piccinini, Sam Scott

Philosophy Faculty Works

A common presupposition in the concepts literature is that concepts constitute a singular natural kind. If, on the contrary, concepts split into more than one kind, this literature needs to be recast in terms of other kinds of mental representation. We offer two new arguments that concepts, in fact, divide into different kinds: (a) concepts split because different kinds of mental representation, processed independently, must be posited to explain different sets of relevant phenomena; (b) concepts split because different kinds of mental representation, processed independently, must be posited to explain responses to different kinds of category. Whether these arguments are …
